of the year five times and want inducted into the nation's memorial basketball hall of fame. after this win, she remained characteristically humble about what it all means. >> this game of basketball was invented as, always has been and always will be a team sport. it is never about one person. it is not about me. i would not be up here without the great players i have coached, without working at the great universities i have worked, having a great staff. >> best known for her time as ohio state's women's coach, beat the record set by coach k. he shared a message saying, tara is a true guardian of our sport. the jacket she was wearing, it was great. >> she had to delay a bridge game with her mother to finish the celebration. very cute. >> that's nice.

legend. thanks for joining us. "cnn news central" starts now. nikki haley moving on to south carolina with donald trump reportedly fuelling she vowed to keep fighting on. >> we just got word that the haley campaign released two new ads in south carolina this morning. a $4 million ad buy that doesn't seem like quitting, even as senior party officials, including state parties now, are pushing haley to get out. we have brand-new reporting just in. i'm john berman with kate bolduan. "cnn news central" starts now. ♪ right now, nikki haley says, onward to south carolina.
6:02 am
is putting money where her mouth is with that ad buy that john mentioned. donald trump though says, look at the scoreboard. the republican national committee seems to be suggesting the same. mcdaniel is saying she doesn't see a panth for nikki haley. nikki haley released her first two ads in south carolina. here is her message. >> new hampshire is first in the nation. it is not the last in the nation. this race is far from over. now we're the last one standing next to donald trump. >> what is going to happen in the next weeks, one month before that primary is very unclear. one thing that's clear, haley has gotten under donald trump's skin. >> who the hell was the importer that went up on the stage before and, like, claimed a victory?
6:03 am
she did very poorly. i don't get angry. i get even. >> jeff zeleny joins us from amhurst, new hampshire. wild night. what's next? >> reporter: good morning. perhaps a wilder month to come should nikki haley decide to stay in this race. as she's pledging to do. new hampshire is the beginning of the process. the question today is, is it the end of the republican primary campaign? that's a decision that nikki haley will have to make. she is holding a campaign rally tonight in north charleston. she's vowing to fight on. if she decides to do that, this will be an epic battle. donald trump was teasing last night saying he is going to do nothing to stop her. we have seen an aggressive campaign. this is nothing what south carolina would be that has a history of bitter feuds in primary campaigns. the haley campaign is on the air
6:04 am
this morning in south carolina with television advertisements. this is a sampling of what she's selling to voters. >> biden, too old. trump, too much chaos. a rematch no one wants. there's a better choice for a better america. her story started right here. america's youngest governor, a conservative republican, and boy, did she deliver. >> reporter: voters in south carolina are familiar with her story. the electorate has changed. a significant population shift. it has become much more trumpy, if you will, during his era. many republican office holders in south carolina have lined up to support him. in fact, many of them were here in new hampshire campaigning on his behalf. senator tim scott. there's no doubt she has a tough road ahead if she goes forward, because the electorate there is different than new hampshire. she struggled here.
6:05 am
as of now, she's in the race. donald trump still has a primary on his hand, even as he looks forward to a general election matchup with president joe biden. >> tim scott positioned over donald trump's right shoulder throughout that speech last night, could not miss it. especially when he came up to the podium and talked about how much he loved donald trump. before south carolina, there's nevada. donald trump wanted to talk about that last night. let's play this for everybody. >> i did hear nikki say, it's off to south carolina. i love south carolina. i love it. you know, she forgot one thing. she forgot next week it's nevada. next week, it's nevada. it's not south carolina. we love south carolina. but next week, it's nevada. i'm pleased to announce, we just won nevada. we just won. 100%. because all of them, they looked at it and they took polls. i was polling at 95%.
6:06 am
they decided not to play in nevada. >> nevada is different this year. i have a hard time summing it up, jeff, what's going to be happening there. talk to us about this. >> reporter: he is not wrong in the sense that he is likely going to win nevada. he is the only one participating in the caucuses. what comes before the caucuses is the primary. you may ask, why are there two contests? after the 2020 election when there were problems with the caucuses, the state legislator changed the law to have a primary. the nevada republican party didn't like that. they said, we want our party-run caucuses. there's a primary on the 6th, caucuses on the 8th. sounds very confusing. the point is, you win delegates through the caucuses that trump is participating in. that's one of the reasons haley is not going to nevada. other candidates weren't as
6:07 am
well. the next real contest is south carolina with a quick stop in las vegas. perhaps we will see you there. >> i hope so. moral vehiclictories do not mat when it's all delegates that get you over the finish line. great to see you, jeff. onward. >> you will see kate at the craps table. >> thanks for doing my internal monologue for me. the percent donald trump got was the highest in history. is that the right way to judge donald trump? he was president of the united states. some people look at him and say, he is a quasi incumbent. look at what happened in 1992 when george h.w. bush ran for
6:08 am
re-election. pat buchanan got 38%. everyone thought this was a disaster for bush. it wounded him throughout the entire campaign and into the general election. this looks like this. there's other numbers underneath this which are of concern to some republicans. look at moderates. trump won the election. he got crushed by nikki haley among moderates, 50% moderates vote in a general election. we were talking about new hampshire had undeclared voters. you could vote if you were registered undeclare order repu -- undeclared. take a look at this. he beat nikki haley by 50 points. that's a reminder, it's hard to win a republican nominating contest if you are losing republicans by 50 points. as we look ahead -- jeff and
6:09 am
kate alluded to this -- the calendar. the calendar here is something. we are done now with new hampshire. that was right here. you have all these days left in january. you have all this time before south carolina. nevada notwithstanding and the virgin islands, a favorite of kate bolduan's and mine. this is a ton of real estate. this is a ton of time to weather attacks if you are nikki haley. a lot of things can happen during that time. a lot of them, they're not great. one other thing i want to point out that's of concern to some trump supporters is this number right here. i put it side by side with this. yes, he won. but in our exit poll, we asked, if trump is the nominee, would you be dissatisfied but not support? would you not support him if he was the nominee? look at this. republicans, 19% of republican voters said they would not
6:10 am
support donald trump if he were the nominee. among independents, it's a giant 66%. look, if you are the trump campaign, this is glass half full. if you are maybe the democrats or nikki haley, it's glass half empty. the reality might be it's just glass half trump. >> it's glasses. that calendar -- can you pull that up? >> there's a lot i can do over here. >> you are a talented man. those green circles that you -- that you made are the most ominous green circles i have seen. that's a lot of time for a lot of things to happen. good, bad, and ugly. joining us now is washington bureau chief for "the boston globe" jackie kusinich. let's talk about this. let's start with the ad buy. $4 million ad buy in south carolina. the first for nikki haley. that does not suggest that we're about to bow out.
6:11 am
what do you see in this? >> first off, no one ever bows out or announces they're going to bow out until they do. it's substantial, certainly in her home state, which is a true open primary. looking at the road ahead, it's very difficult for nikki, not just in south carolina but moving forward. the donors, the dollars, the voters might say differently. coming out of a presidential like this, where you are one on one, it's a psychological choice to really sit down with your per donald trump going forward as nikki haley stays in for a while? >> i mean, his focus is split.
6:12 am
he said basically as much last night. his victory speech was mostly about nikki haley. it hardly was about biden. in contrast to the mspeech in iowa where he thanked desantis and talked about himself, that was not the case last night. we all know that when trump is angry, you do -- who he is angry at, you hear it a lot. you saw it with ron desantis, how he tore him down throughout the summer and dismantled his campaign. they will try to do the same thing to nikki haley. she's not behaving like someone who is not going to leave it all on the field, unlike desantis, who you saw him pulling back ads, making his campaign smaller. she's not doing that yet. i think this point that if the money is still flowing, she's probably going to keep going on. perhaps until super tuesday. we will have to see. >> matthew, exit polls -- john
6:13 am
went through some great exit polls. >> thank you. >> you are welcome. i think our fatigue is making us nice to each other, which is very strange. exit polls say roughly four in ten haley voters attributed their support for her because of their distaste of her owe poe n -- opponents. a vote for nikki haley was a vote against trump. listen to this. >> what do you like about nikki haley? >> several things. one thing, she's not donald trump. >> was that most important to you? >> yes. the guy has no conscience. >> is there something that nikki haley said along the way that you realized, this was the one? >> she really wasn't the one. >> who was the one? >> i liked chris christie.
6:14 am
i liked chris christie because of the way he told it. when he backed out, she was the lesser of the two evils. >> the conversations with voters were so fascinating throughout. is that any way to win a primary, matthew? or said another way, is this equally a problem for donald trump in a general? >> listen, you spent a long day here in nashua. welcome to the political hangover. we know the results, what happened last night. we are trying to figure out what happened. yes, this is not a way to win a primary, to try to be either a moderate darling or independent candidate. you need base voters. donald trump has them, has them locked up. a great night for him. moving forward, there's much worry that independents, people that voted for nikki haley last night, will not be voting for donald trump in a general
6:15 am
election. that's dangerous. beyond that, if you look at what his speech was, no one will remember the margin of victory after tonight. people will remember that speech, which was vicious, even vile at nikki haley, saying that democrats don't love our country, they are evil. that's not a welcoming message for the voters he would need. >> let me pick up on this. this is to you, jackie. there's reporting that that's what haley wanted. haley was poking the bear. his aggressive concession speech was to bait trump. i guess it worked. why? what does nikki haley get out of that? what does it mean for voters out there? >> in her last pitch as she was going toward election day, she was talking about his
6:16 am
temperament, how he conducts humh himself. chaos follows him. she was talking about whether he was too old to do the job. what she did last night by baiting him, you saw the mask slip. the perp son in iowa that thank the two of them wasn't there last night. i will tell you who else liked the fact that he went off the rails last night to say the least is the biden campaign. they were looking at that and saying, that's the guy we want to run against. >> great to see both of you. thank you. great to see you here in person. how was the drive? >> it was eventful. >> harrowing? >> yes. we are here. you can't get rid of us. new video this morning. we will go overseas. a plane crash in russia and conflicting reports about whether ukrainian soldiers or russian missiles were on board. boeing's ceo is on capitol
6:17 am
6:21 am
6:22 am
live in eastern ukraine. also here, matthew chance. fred, so people know, this is the type of plane we are talking about here. what happened? who is saying what? >> reporter: hi there. you are right, there are conflicting claims as to what happened there. we know this plane crashed into a fireball on impact. this is a transport aircraft from the russian military. it's a medium-size transport plane. the russians are saying it was shot down by ukrainian surface to air missiles. you correctly noted that this is in the border area between russia and ukraine. the russians are saying a surface to air missile was fired from ukrainian territory. the ukrainians haven't commented yet. depending on who was on board, that's the big question right now. that's where the russians are making the accusation that 65
6:23 am
ukrainian prisoners of war were on the plane meant for an exchange with the ukrainian military to bring them back to ukraine. the ooh ukraine ians are not commenting. they are saying there was a prisoner of war exchange that was supposed to take place today. it is now called off. the ukrainians are urging to be careful about any information put out there. before that, there was claims on ukrainian state media saying there were surface to air missile on the plane. all of that unclear as well. what we know, however, from the local government there in the region is that this crash happened outside of the city of belgarod. no one survived the crash. >> fred, stand by. matthew, people see the region we are talking about. not far from kharkiv on the
6:24 am
ukrainian side of the border. talk to us about this region in particular and what has been happening there now for almost two years. >> reporter: yeah. it's been one of the areas close to the russian border with ukraine that has been very active, particularly over the past couple of months as ukrainian forces have carried out cross-border strikes. within the past few weeks, as a matter of fact, you have seen a more aggressive stance from the ukrainian air defenses. they have been targeting and hitting key russian aircraft inside russian airspace, denying the russian air force the kind of freedom of movement that they would otherwise enjoy. earlier this month, an aircraft, one of the big radar battlefield control aircraft -- a handful in russia -- one of those was knocked out of the sky by a missile attack. it's possible that this aircraft
6:25 am
was taken out in the same way as part of that newly aggressive stance by the ukrainians. the big question as fred was referring to, what was the cargo on board? was it human, 65 ukrainian prisoners of war that were on their way home, that were going to be swapped later in a prisoner exchange? that's what the russians say. the ukrainians have basically cast some doubt on that. they have not denied it, but they poured doubt on the idea that was the case. what they say is that their intelligence suggests that this was a military aircraft carrying rockets, missiles, in which case it would have been a high priority target. >> matthew chance, thanks. frederick pleitgen, stay safe. nikki haley is heading home to south carolina, getting ready for her first post-new hampshire rally there. what her plan is now to get an actual win on the primary
6:26 am
6:30 am
6:31 am
night in new hampshire clearly seems to have gotten under donald trump's skin. >> i said, wow, she's doing like a speech like she won. she didn't win. she lost. let's not have somebody take a victory when she had a very bad night. she had a very bad night. i find in life you can't let people get away with bullshit. you can't. you just can't do that. when i watched her, the fancy dress -- that probably wasn't so fancy -- come up. what's she doing? we won. >> with me now is melinda terango, life long republican in new hampshire, who became a volunteer for women for nikki. how are you feeling about last night? >> i'm feeling very good about it, kate. >> why? >> it's been an extraordinary 48 hours. nikki defines what winning means. i'm happy with that.
6:32 am
that's the sign of a strong and transformational leader. she feels like she has closed the gap and she has the momentum to continue to do that. there are 48 states left. this is going to be very interesting. >> why do you think she fell short in new hampshire? >> well, fell short. she did close the gap. perhaps -- i happen to know yesterday at the polls a woman came up to me and admitted she had forgot ten to change her party ticket so she could vote for nikki. we did have an excellent turnout. i do believe the independents helped her quite a bit. there does appear to be a strong support for trump that i just don't understand. the man did a great job for us 2016 to 2020, although he did rack up a big bill, $8 trillion. this support for him is almost
6:33 am
cult-like. the people who i greeted yesterday, the nikki fans were two thumbs up. trump fans got quite vulgar sometimes. i don't understand what all this malice is for. we just don't need more of this chaos. his support while strong is not the attitude we need for this country right now or anymore. >> nikki haley is moving on to south carolina. she says she's committing. she said multiple times, this is a marathon, not a sprint, in terms of the primary calendar. i spoke to a lot of voters in new hampshire yesterday about if it is a struggle or they are thinking if it does end up coming down to being a general election of donald trump versus joe biden, what you will do. have you decided that?
6:34 am
>> me personally, what i would do, kate, i will hang my head low, i will leave my morals and my ethics at the door and with a sick feeling in my stomach, i will go to the polls and vote once again for former president trump. but i will do it with reluctance. >> i heard that from many people who said they were supporting nikki haley. does that add to a sense of inevitability around donald trump do you think, that choice? >> no, i don't think so. no. there's an energy here, kate. you said you were here. i hope you felt it. it's extraordinary. i have never felt anything like it for any presidential candidate in the 30 1/2 years that i have lived in this state. nikki engenders respect and trust and a sense of comradery.
6:35 am
she's a transformational leader. she makes people feel good about themselves. that galvanizes everyone. then the whole becomes greater than the sum of the parts. that's what i'm seeing from nikki, which is why she's not thwarted by yesterday's result, why she keeps looking forward, why she keeps painting her vision of the future in many different ways for different aud er audiences to buy it. that's the sign of a transformational leader. they cannot be defended against. that's what i see happening going forward. >> the chairwoman of the republican national committee spoke last night. she clearly seemed to suggest she does not think nikki haley has a path. she said that very clearly. suggesting it might be time for haley to bow out. let me play this for you.
6:36 am
>> i'm looking at the math and path going forward. i don't see it for nikki haley. i think she's run a great campaign. but i do think there's a message that's coming out from the voters which is very clear. we need to ounite around our eventual nominee, which is going to be donald trump. >> what's your message as a republican voter to the republican national committee after that? >> please reconsider your options. i have to repeat what nikki has been saying because i feel so strongly about it. we do not need the divisiveness and chaos. my first priority in this country is reunification. this has just been decimating to the morale and the respect for our country. please, if you are convinced that president trump is the right answer, i'm asking you to reconsider. go meet nikki. when you meet her, i think you
6:37 am
would be inclined to change your mind. don't believe the lies. there's so much here to be gained by having an accountant in the white house who has foreign experience. we would be the 60th nation to have a female leader. it's time. >> you are looking for reunification. the republican national committee seems to have a different idea in this primary of what unifying means going forward for the party. thank you for coming in. it was not just one plane with loose bolts. just how big this issue seems to be with a certain line of aircraft. gas prices have fallen, 401(k)s are climbing, mortgage rates are dipping. is the u.s. economy at a turning point?
6:42 am
this morning, boeing's ceo is doing damage control, meeting with lawmakers on capitol hill about that terrifying incident midair when a door plug panel blew off an alaska flight leaving a gaping hole and forcing an emergency landing. the faa wants to know what boeing is doing to ensure its planes are safe. here is the ceo of alaska airlines yesterday. >> we found some loose bolts on many of our max 9s. >> many? >> yeah. those are things that are going to be rectified through the inspection process. >> boeing is better than this. flight 1282 should never have
6:43 am
happened. >> we have more on this. what is the faa saying? >> the plot thickening all the time. the comments from alaska's ceo are further confirmation of possible quality control issues at boeing when building the 737 max 9. the head of the faa told me in the first one on one interview since the incident that quality control is where his investigation is now focused. remember, the faa has grounded the max 9 in the u.s. as it figures out how airlines should inspect their planes for problems. the faa administrator told me that the door plug is a good design but only when it's properly executed. a big caveat there. the bolts that hold the door plug in place on the plane, they are key. there are four of them. if they're not installed, the door can shimmy out of its retaining grooves and shoot off with explosive force like we saw
6:44 am
on january 5th. here is the sound bite from the faa administrator saying quality control is now the focus of its investigation. >> we know this particular design has been in other aircraft that are not the max, that have millions of hours of operation. there's a fair amount of comfort around the design and everything that we are seeing is confirming that. it takes us to production, manufacturing, maintenance, those issues and ensuring pieces are where they need to be and all the bolts are if place. >> the faa has inspectors on the ground at boeing's plant in washington. the goal, to increase the scrutiny on where the production problems might be occurring. the faa also now has a sampling of data from a quarter of the max 9s in the u.s. looking at measurements from the data before it issues any order to unground the planes. by the way, i asked the faa
6:45 am
chief if the flying public should be afraid of the max 9. he told me the faa will not let the plane in the air until they are convinced this issue is taken care of. on the boeing side of things, boeing made an announcement last night it will do a one-day pause for quality control tomorrow. that will mean workers breaking into groups, work sessions on quality, and the boeing ceo is meeting with top lawmakers on capitol hill today. those are closed-door meetings. >> the plot thickening is right. quality control has never meant so much, i don't think. thank you. with us now, former faa safety inspector david suisi. a paraphrase, nothing wrong with door plugs, per se, but you have to install them right. that sort of sounds like how i put together my lawnmower. how concerned should i be?
6:46 am
>> it's concerning it's down to that granular of a level. the faa needs to step up the process to see the processes within boeing are satisfactory, which it sounds like they are not. how do they get into that safety and risk assessment and mitigation? >> how would you assess how boeing is doing in what they were doing? i was interested to hear, they are taking a day office retreat to talk about safety. >> that's a good point, john. what that is part of is the safety management system. what the safety management system does it assure boeing continuously improves their safety programs. that's what they are doing. this is routine. they do that every time there's a shift change, they do a review to see if there's anything that should be improved. that's part of the overall safety management system. why that failed when it went outside of their local
6:47 am
inspection process, that's what's in question now. they need to look beyond just the internal, which obviously there was issues there, but also the incoming. did they inspect the parts properly had they came in? are they inspecting parts propeproper properly when they go out? >> great to see you. thank you so much. coming up, we are following breaking news. the u.n. is reporting one of its buildings in gaza housing thousands of people was just hit. we will have new details coming in. we will bring those to you. want to show you a live look at the marks right now. you can see they are up as your 401(k) is having a banner year. we will break down the positive side for the economy next.
6:51 am
6:52 am
that building, john, where they were taking shelter, we know that in that area of khan yunis there's been an uptick in idf military activity, going after terror cells and ramping up weapons caches, we know that around that building there are a couple of principal hospitals, they fall in an area that the idf, this morning, told residents that they needed to evacuate because military activities were picking up in that area. this strike that the u.n. official is speaking about, we don't know how many casualties, but they are describing it as a mass casualty event. there have been a number of times before where u.n. safe shelters have been struck, and because there are a lot of displaced people crowded and crammed into these often ramshackle buildings, way more than would normally be present in these types of buildings the casualty tolls have been very high in the past, and it appears
6:53 am
potentially that's what we are dealing with right now. according to one person in that u.n. camp he says that they can see tanks, israeli tanks right outside of this building -- this shelter area, and that there are people around him to have shrapnel injuries, those nearby hospitals as well have been describing a situation where they have been under instructions to evacuate, but have not been able to evacuate because it's too dangerous, that there are hundreds of people in these hospitals who have infectious diseases, there are pregnant women, people there who just can't get to the hospital for the dialysis they need to get. this is an area that is right, if you will, at the focus of idf activity at the moment, the idf today saying they had encircled khan yunis. the situation in this building, again, we don't have precise details of the number of casualties. we expect to get that.
6:54 am
but it is relatively unusual for the u.n. to release a tweet like this, and draw attention to a situation like this. it is indicative of the concerns that they have at that location for a high number of casualties. >> nic robertson, we'll let you work your sources to find out what you can about the details, let us know when you hear more. kate? >> much more on that, more details. take a look at this, a look at the markets right now, opening higher this morning, so far, on their way to maybe what could be another record day on wall street. we shall watch, track and see. the dow hit a new record monday, s&p hit a fresh record yesterday and it's not just stocks, a number of factors are pointing to a strong economy right now. we have more on this, not just wall street, it's also main street. what are you seeing? >> we're watching wall street right now because the dow, the s&p opening higher, potentially on their way to another record led by what's called the mag any
6:55 am
of tent seven. these are seven stocks that really rise and fall on the market follows in sync. but for the average american if they're watching the stock market they may be really excited about their 401(k), but if you don't have a 401(k), there are other ways that you can kind of tell the economy is roaring, and moving in a really good direction, gas prices are a big way that everyday americans feel every single day, just how much they're spending, gas prices today, $3.09. from a year ago, $3.45. that's significant savings at the pump. and mortgage rates, many people have been out of the home buying markets, can't afford a mortgage. mortgage rates coming in at 6.6%, that's the lowest since may of 2023. and also, consumer sentiment. that is how people are feeling about the economy. >> we were hearing a lot about that in new hampshire. >> in new hampshire. >> yes. >> so i don't know if people were saying they feel a little bit better but that's what we're
6:56 am
seeing at least. >> there's a range for sure. what are you hearing now? >> we're seeing in the numbers that the university of michigan takes every single month that people are feeling better about the economy, up 13% in the beginning of january, up 29% over two months. that is significant, it is not where we were, though, pre-pandemic and that is why you still have many americans, many families still feeling the pinch of higher prices. we know inflation is certainly cooling, however weir not going back to 2019 prices. we're never going to get there again. so, people may be still struggling where we are, we still need to cool a little bit in order for people to be at a more comfortable level but wall street and main street certainly moving in the right direction. >> yeah, cooling, but how fast and how fast do people feel it, a huge question we're hearing, that's going to have its ripple effects in this political season for sure, good to see you, thank you. >> thank you. >> john? >> a flurry of new developments in the republican presidential campaign in the last hour, nikki
