state that you signed that sets six weeks >> as the threshold might be one, that could create unforeseen problems like potentially what we've seen in alabama with ivf i don't think it's going to cause any problems. i support ivf, but in our state, i mean, again, the thing that was passed by our legislature that i signed last year replaced a much more regressive 2007 trigger bill. so even north dakota, which is very conservative on this, was moving towards a position more towards the middle well, with legislation >> all right. governor doug burgum of north dakota, governor, i'm very grateful to have you on the show. i do hope you'll return. we can talk some more about what might washington what your future might look like here in this town of washington. thank you very much. >> thank you. thank you. kasie. >> all right. >> thanks to all of you for joining us. i i'm kasie hunt. don't go anywhere. we are still monitoring live events in

moscow as alexey navalny is set to be buried, cnn news central starts right now >> the breaking news mourners, as far as the eye you can see police lined the streets with snipers on the roofs at the funeral of russian opposition leader alexey navalny. now cnn's live signal, which was jammed or blocked for a time, is now back up. >> locking in a trial date in florida, a critical hearing is happening this morning in the classified documents case against donald trump. trump is expected to be there. we are there too. >> so never in the history of recording us whether has 12 feet of snow ever fallen in just one to two days? that could happen this the weekend. sara is out. i'm john berman with kate baldwin. this is cnn

news central >> cnn breaking news and the breaking news this morning, he was a true hero. i want to say to him, farewell. you're looking at live pictures from outside the funeral of russian opposition leader alexey navalny, thousands of mourners are risking their lives and their freedom to be present or even just near. this event. >> crowds, as far as the eye can see, in some cases, the funeral we're told just wrapped up, his body has been carried out of the moscow church. i believe we have pictures, a still photo of alexey navalny's body in died that church while a funeral will still happening, we'll show you that picture as soon as we can in this video, you can hear supporters chanting
4:03 am
you heard them chanting. navalny. now there isn't extremely heavy in an, and an extremely noticeable police presence on the scene. of course, navalny died in a russian prison camp two weeks ago. his widow, yulia, says she is concerned that police are going to arrest people who have come to pay hey, their respects our matthew chance has been reporting from outside the church the signal was down now it's back up again, matthew, i'm just going to turn it over to you. tell us everything going on yeah. >> i mean, the signal has been very dodgy here. they put an umbrella blanket. it seems over the whole area and we couldn't get a signal out, but we're here now and you can see the line of people stretches into the desk distance thousands of russians have come out to pay their last respects to alexey navalny, even though you've just said that the funeral in the church, which is a short distance from here it is now over. you can see people are
4:04 am
still coming along carrying flowers and messages to lay at the cascade are inside the church where alexey navalny has just been taken away from any of you guys speak english. you speak english you speak english. >> hello. >> hi. hi. hi. thank you, sir. thank you. why have you come here today with so many other russians to pay or i guess it's symbolic value for people who don't agree with everything that's happening in russia, right? i can be specific because we can say like a bird words, you know, it's risky for you to be here. yeah, it's certainly a risk to why take because if that's my stance on fragrances, and i believe that's to show solidarity that you are not the one who is has to deal with this. >> all right. so thank you very much. i've got i've got polina over here as well the fact that alexey navalny is dead. >> what >> does that united people here? what does it say about the state of the united? some
4:05 am
people >> but it's the same time. it's quite, it's obviously horrible says upsetting that's me. obviously and other people here in this group, what i think it's kind of uniting thing since a lot of people come, we came here to pay their last goodbyes. she was one. what does it say about your country, about russia? >> there obviously some people who are, i guess so against the whole thing. that's happening right now, i can say the visit, but there are some people who have good hearts. basically it thank you very much. >> really appreciate it. thank you. >> john. they have a lot of people here coming out they're very careful about what they say because obviously it can be risky speaking your mind out publicly in this way. remember, hundreds of russians who were simply putting flowers at makeshift memorials across the country over the past couple of weeks have been detained by the authorities. and so people know that they're taking a risk here. but look, so many
4:06 am
thousands of people have come out despite the very intense security operation that's been underway here, riot police have been put in place all along the route to cold people back. but at the moment, we haven't seen any crack down yet by the authorities. the authorities are still allowing these thousands of people to file past, to go to this church, which is right right behind us. there and to pay their respects to russia's most prominent opposition figure from here in the next few hours, the funeral will take place at a cemetery which is not not far from here. and so this parade, this procession will continue throughout the course of the day. we expect john matthew, we are lucky to have your signal up here, as we said, it was down for a period of time. so i want to take advantage of this moment because we just don't know how long it's going to last there. these people were seeing streaming behind you, some of whom were
4:07 am
extraordinarily willing to talk to you. how do they even know about this funeral? how is the information been getting out to the people around the country >> well, i despite the efforts of the authorities, the state media, not really talking much about what's being planned. i mean, people have the internet, people have vpns, they have the ability to sort of like access news in this information age that we live in, just, just like we do. and of course, the navalny team, that navalny campaign of very proficient at getting their message across to the millions of russians that click on their investigations and that listened intently, at least in private, to what they have to say. now, there's obviously, all this kind of word that the alexey navalny wasn't that popular in russia. that's the allegation that often comes from people who ruled the country. but look, you can see that's not necessarily the case. there are, again, let me spin around here just to get get get you a sense of how many people the
4:08 am
line of people that are queuing up now, lining up to pay their last respects. >> it's never-ending. i mean, it was hundreds this morning. it's turned into thousands, but it's very difficult to judge because it's just that the line of people is just not stopping at this time in russia as people come to lay flowers and messages at the casket inside the church where alexey navalny's funeral has been taking place. >> matthew chance, it is great to have you there. thank you so much for the work that you and your team are doing, please stay safe. this stream of people has just been passing behind you this entire time. you're talking that in of itself tells a story. hopefully we'll get you back again soon. kate, remarkable to see that we see it. i mean, look >> remarkable things >> happen on live tv all the time. this is extraordinary given the bravery that people would need to have not only to be in that procession but to stop and speak with matthew chance courage. >> they show to talk to him is extraordinary. >> it is. all right. let's talk much more about this right now. cnn's chief international

correspondent, clarissa ward, is joining me. clarissa, i want to just so everyone can just talk about the image that is next to you right now on the wall. this is the image that has come mao to release from navalny's team of alexei navalny's open casket during the funeral today this morning. i mean, this is an image that the world should see. it needs to see. >> but just what you >> think of one these images coming out and to what we just saw all with matthew chance, the people who are willing to stop and talk >> i think it's pretty incredible k that the kremlin has done absolutely everything in their power to try to play this down, to try to minimize it, to try to prevent it from escalating into some kind of demonstration. of sorts. and that included, by the way, jamming signals. people were not able to well, our own
4:10 am
matthew chance was not able to get his live shot up, but also the navalny team who had been live streaming from the church were not able to do that signals. stop jamming when the church service was over and when alexei navalny's body was moved on to the cemetary. but you can see that extraordinary haunting image, frankly of his coffin covered in flowers and the mourners, his mother, you can see by the coffin on her knee he's people holding those candles. and just that extraordinary stream of people that you just saw, matthew standing within pouring in hour upon hour, regardless of the risk, regardless of the riot police flanking all around the church. we also saw dignitaries attending the funeral, the us ambassador to russia, the uk ambassador to russia, one extraordinary image showed those two ambassadors standing before this wall of so-called
4:11 am
oman are riot police. and you heard the chants of the crowds. navalny. navalny well, they were also chanting. we aren't afraid because you were not afraid. that's a sort of a play on his logan that alexey navalny himself used to say all the time yeah, you buy uci vga pages. i'm not afraid and you should not be afraid. and i think today you're seeing some of that extraordinary courage of alexey navalny let me being carried on by the many supporters that he has, particularly in moscow, but in other urban areas and across the country. even though the risk is so high now, even though dmitry peskov, who was president putin spokesperson, has said and warned against the dangers of quote, unauthorized memorials and yet still you see this stream of humanity coming out to pay homage and pay respect to an extraordinary man
4:12 am
>> yeah, i mean, just received word also from navalny's team that his body has now arrived at the cemetary. this is, we're going to be following this as this continues and continuing to bring to everyone these extraordinary images as you're talking about that are coming out as people default bryant in bravely and courageously coming out to pay their respects. and speaking up. and there's some button as much in the only way that they can right now in moscow to pay their respects to alexey navalny and what he means to them clarissa, thanks so much. she's gonna be with us. we're going to continue to follow this for everyone. john. >> and as we watched that very shortly, we do expect to see donald trump, but a florida courthouse hearings today that could see him scheduled for trial in the mar-a-lago documents case well before the election we just got our first look at the transcript of hunter biden's closed-door testimony, what the drama and defiance tells us about where that case is going. next, up to 12 feet of snow. officials

4:19 am
carlos de oliveira, they want a date in august. walt nauta, his political aide, the third co-defendant. he wants a date to start in september. we will see where the judge comes down on this, but john, there is a real question here. if the judge schedules this federal criminal case against donald trump for the mishandling of classified documents. here in florida in july or august or september, does that mean? that there is almost no possibility for a january 6 federal criminal child to be held before the election. that is going to be a very big question for the other judge on your chutkan in washington dc, and we'll have to see how that plays out closer to the date, but it's really going to be a popcorn situation this summer with trial dates. and when things will happen, how long they will take an even if there will be a trial in this case, trump has also pointed out in his filings that it's a busy campaign season. there's a lot of primaries and he would

4:21 am
of contentious testimony, hunter biden remained adamant of one thing for sure that his father never financially benefited or helped in any of hunter biden's business deals. cnn's marshall cohen has more on this. i mean, what is this the transcript of there's back-and-forth was what, nearly 230 pages. marshall. tell me more about what we heard from hunter biden >> well, there was a lot in there, k1, as you mentioned, this whole impeachment inquiry revolves around the republicans allegation their theory that hunter biden was in business with his father, that they work together hand in hand and to basically abuse his positions in government to get rich from overseas business dealings. and what we saw in this transcript over and over, we're unequivocal denials from hunter biden. let me read one of those for you and he basically said that he knew better than to do that and that he didn't do it. he said, quote, that there was one thing that i was fully aware of my entire life is that
4:22 am
my dad was an official of the united states government and there were very bright lines that i abided to and that i was very, very cognizant of and i made certain that i never engaged with my father and asking him to do anything on my behalf or on behalf of any client. it doesn't get more black and white than that. an unequivocal denial. but kate, look, in the last year-and-a-half, republicans have unearthed some examples of the blurring of those lines. there were instances where hunter biden put his father on speakerphone when he was in a business meeting or when he introduced his dad to business partners, there was that whatsapp message that you mentioned in the beginning there where he was texting the chinese business partner and saying, i'm here with my father and my father know why he wants to know why we haven't gotten paid yet, clearly invoking his dad to close a deal. he had explanations for pretty much everything in this interview and let me read for you what he

death, quote, will become the starting point for the collapse of the putin regime. joining us now is cnn national security analyst, former cia chief of russia operations, steve hall. i mean, steve just speak to the images that we've seen come out the crowds that are showing up, the chance that we're hearing from the crowds what do you think of these scenes >> you know, can i think what we're seeing is really two very important things from the russian government. the first is their incredible fear and concern that they have that navalny's death and the symbolism that goes with that the burial, the served all of the church services and that sort of thing will be a rallying in cry in a point where opposition forces that exist inside of russia will use an opportunity to try to put pressure on the putin regime. the other thing that we're seeing though, sort of on a human level, is the, is just the lack of humanity, just the approach to the russian government has taken. we've
4:38 am
seen reporting recently how difficult the whole thing was for the family to even get a hearse to carry on navalnaya's remains because of course, if you're in that business and you involve yourself even in a normal just business fashion inside of russia, you can face retribution from the russian security services. so it's a very nervous time for the putin regime and it'll be very interesting to see what the next couple of days bring we were able to hear from matthew chance reporter on the ground briefly a short time ago, but for a long stretch d his signal was blocked or jammed. what does that tell you? >> well i mean the russians a long history of controlling the media and being very uncomfortable with foreign journalists inside of russia because journalists are not russians, haven't tennessee to tell the truth. and that's extremely difficult for the kremlin to manage. they don't want the truth about navalny and other things going on inside of the russian and government right now to reach russian citizens. so, yeah, it's a very difficult, very dangerous time, not just for foreign journalists though, for russian journalists, russian opposition is really anybody
4:39 am
who dares to stick their head up a little bit inside of the russian regime to say, hey, this is an important event. this was an important person. we need to look at our government very, very, very dangerous times right? to do that right now and russia you mentioned that with the next couple of days are going, what's going to happen in the next couple days? what it's going to look like will be interesting and important. there are a lot of questions today of what now what, where, where can and does this movement go? what does your experience tell you about what? what will happen, what needs to happen, what role, if any, of the united states should play in that >> yeah, i liked the way you put that. what needs to happen, what will happen unfortunately inside of russia are usually two different things. what needs to happen, obviously for anybody who cares about democracy, who anybody who cares about you know, russia, or you're living in russia and you want to have and you semblance of a normal life where you can participate in society in the way that you want to that's, you know, that this doesn't happen in russia now it's a closed society and i think a lot of people in the west don't realize that because it looks like a normal
4:40 am
place and look at the streets, you look at supermarkets, you look at things like that. and it's not at all like that. what needs to happen is opposition to putin. the problem is, is that so many of putin and the kremlin's resources from their security and police services are dedicated to identifying and penetrating those opposition organizations to try to nullify them, to try to make them in, to try and make it impossible for them to operate. i don't hold out a lot of hello that a strong opposition force in russia will come up in the wake of navalny could happen, can't rule everything out. it's just extremely dangerous given the amount of resources that the kremlin puts into this, it is even with that reality in mind, it does feel extraordinary. the two people who stopped to speak to matthew chance giving, saying whether turning out and also being very clear that they what they can't say saying i can't i can't say beyond that. just kind of the stark reality of what everyone is up against though they are showing up to walk in that procession. it's good to see you, steve. thank you. john.

>> i'd, say president biden expected to sign a stopgap spending bill that will fend off a partial government shutdown, at least for one more week. congress will have to do this all over again ahead of another shutdown deadline next friday. house speaker mike johnson's decision to cut a deal on this short-term version may put him in some kind of a danger from within his own party is not where we need to be to actually fundamental at jamestown rhode $1,000,000,000,000 interests in 2026. guys mean i don't know what to tell you that something's got to stop someone's got to change, right? >> cnn's lauren fox is in washington with the nose shut down friday, but maybe shutdown next week >> yeah. crisis averted for one single week, about seven days that lawmakers now have to finish up this next tranche of bills and it is something that speaker johnson has been confident that they are going to be able to pull off. but i think what you are hearing from conservatives is two things.
4:42 am
one, they're very frustrated too. they also realize that this trajectory was one that was set back in june when the debt ceiling bill passed their war budget numbers put in place that really set this this course. and so many conservatives, while they are saying that johnson bear some responsibility, they are also arguing this was a path that kevin mccarthy started them on. and once they were on it, it was extremely difficult to get off of it. we should also note that some of the frustration coming from conservatives that they are not passing individual bills that this will likely end up in a situation where they have what are known as minibuses on capitol hill, just larger traunches of spending packages that that is in part because conservatives blocked a series of individual spending bills on the floor last summer into the fall that made it extremely difficult well, for leadership to move anything with just republican votes in a narrow majority. so while you're hearing, conservatives

can they are to some extent to blame for the fact that those individual bills couldn't pass. john, if there's one thing that bothers people while they're eating breakfast is talk of a minibus bill right there. man, did people get riled up about that? lauren fox explaining why things are so convoluted on capitol hill. thank you very much. donie, start talking minibuses. i don't you dare you can't have any of us are omnibus martha, they're doing the minibus again wait a minute and omni. omni is everything. many as just some of some of the bills more than one in what's in-between it mac maxey, ms no it says that for good reason? yeah. exactly. okay. we'll get we'll get back up. >> forecasters warning of potentially feet of >> snow in parts of the western united states is a huge storm, is heading in, settling in right now, the national weather service even warning people in this here is that at this point, it's too late to evacuate. cnn's meteorologist derek van dam, he's tracking this for us we knew you were warning that it was calming and it's now setting in. what what are you looking at, derek

>> this is about as extreme of a winter storm that we could possibly get here within the united states, disorienting whiteout conditions impossible travel conditions anticipated not only is it heavy snow, blinding, blizzard type weather conditions, and also damaging winds that have already gusted over 100 miles per hour. so the big question on everyone's mind, how much snow is realistically possible? and we were debating whether or not we showed this graphic with these numbers, but it is important to note it is not out of the realm of possibilities that the highest peaks in the sierra nevada mountain rage in california could receive up to 12 feet. now let's bring it back down to lake tahoe level where people actually live and reside. the potential for a crippling, punishing blizzard is still in the cards four to six feet near the lake tahoe level. that's 5,000 to 6,000 feet. you go down to 3,000 feet. we're talking one to three feet of snow and this is not just a sierra nevada

4:53 am
pick up, we have very dry conditions here and the combination of those two elements essentially act as a fuel to that fire, which as you said, hasn't been fully contained. i just want to show you behind me here. you could see some of the devastation that this area has seen. you can see this is what used to be a small business, roses trailer sales and that car there is completely burnt-out. the entire building, the inside of it is a burned this roof has collapsed and there are a lot of structures here in the area that look exactly like this. one thing that's sort of interesting in both bizarre to look at is that as you drive along, you see some properties that have big completely destroyed. and then you see some others that are still standing. and that's just how this fire has moved. it has moved at inquiry credible speed. and that's what the concern is here going into the weekend that the fire risk is
4:54 am
going to increase. the winds are picking up and since. it's not fully contained yet, people here are watching to see if they have to take precautions. those firefighters still battling the flames, drawn gloria pazmino in amarillo, some difficult days ahead. thank you for being there. kate. >> so the united states says that it conducted two self-defense strikes against anti-ship cruise missiles in the red sea. they also shot down. they say an unmanned aerial vehicle over the region on thursday let's bring in cnn's natasha bertrand. she is much more, she's always gathering these details for us from the pentagon. natasha, what more are you learning about these strikes >> yeah. so these strikes took place yesterday between the hours of around 11:00 a.m. and 12, p.m. eastern time and us central command forces, they did target about six anti-ship cruise missiles that were preparing to launch day safe from yemen, from those houthi-controlled areas of yemen. and they also took down a drone that was flying over the area. now, it is important
4:55 am
to note here that this is not coming in a vacuum. these strikes are really happening on a daily basis because according to central command and these ballistic missiles at the houthis are preparing to launch against commercial ships in the red sea are not only targeting those commercial vessels, but they're also putting us naval ships and us forces in jeopardy. part of the problem here, of course, is that the us does not have a great idea of just how much equipment and weaponry the houthis still have. and so the question becomes how much longer is the us going to have to carry out these kind of whack-a-mole strikes against these houthi weapons, these missiles and drones that they continue to fire into the red sea. another part of the problem, of course, is that a ron, is continuing to supply the houthis with this kind of equipment. so while we have seen iran-backed groups in iraq and syria stop their attacks largely on us forces. the houthis still a wild-card and they're continuing to launch these attacks into the red sea on a daily basis, kate? >> yeah, the question remains, how much more did the houthis have? exactly, which means how much longer was the united

squash information, getting out about the number of people who are on the streets today. and frankly, all of those individuals are now putting their lives at risk. fisk because of the way that vladimir putin crushes dissent inside of russia listen to the students of history, know that russian regimes tend to fall during periods of time where russia over extends its military abroad. because ultimately, the people get fed up that instead but of money going to help them to feed them to support their kids. it's being used for military adventurism with no real point other than conquest overseas or outside of russia's territory. so putin is worried that as conditions inside russia worsen, as he spends more money in ukraine, that the people are going to turn turned on him. and i think that the scenes today show you that putin's hold on power is not complete and it's something that we should all continue to watch. >> we just saw pictures, live pictures being fed back in of

the coffin carrying alexey navalny, the lid being put on its arrival at the cemetary. what does it say to you that there are russians brave enough to to speak to our reporter or for that matter, ukrainians still brave enough to fight when the united states has not moved to send new and yet so putin thought that he was going to march into ukraine and be able to finish the job in a matter of weeks. he never thought that ukraine was going to stand up to him regain half of the territory that he took in the initial days and be able to resist for over two years every single day say that ukraine continues to hold out, continues to hold that line is another day. let vladimir putin in his hold on, power starts to weaken because he is spending extraordinary amounts of money fighting this war, money that the russian people know is not going to them into their neighborhoods and so every day that we are continuing to help

ukraine fight first and foremost, that's in service of protecting ukraine. but there's no doubt it is also weakening vladimir putin's hold on power and there's no doubt that ultimately it makes it less likely that he's going to be able to try to cause unrest and other parts of the region, in particular, nato countries where the united states might ultimately have to fight putin and russia directly >> center. you led the bipartisan negotiations to reach some kind of a deal on enhancing border security and addressing some of the issues surrounding illegal immigration, particularly over the southern border yesterday, both president biden and donald trump went to the border on the same day donald trump when he was speaking, use the language of invasion, talked about the united states being invaded. what do you think of that language? >> i just think it's disgusting i think is racist and xenophobic donald trump doesn't know what an invasion looks like. go to ukraine, see what happens when a neighboring country actually invades you

and kills a hundreds of thousands, tens of thousands of your citizens the fact of the matter is down. trump wants the southern border to remain chaotic. we had a chance to pass that bipartisan tough border security bill that would have allowed the president to close sections of the border when crossings get too high. you know who stopped that bill from becoming law? donald trump, because he does not want the border under control he wants a chaotic because he thinks that helps him politically. and so it was a real contrast yesterday, joe biden at the border asking for congress to give him exceptional new powers and resources to control the border. and donald trump, seeing the border not as a problem that needs to be fixed, but as a problem that he can exploit. and i think the american public are onto this. republicans say they care about the border but actually are never willing to do anything about it. >> so i know you've pointed in new york three were tom suozzi won that open seat in a special congressional election race as how democrats can not run away from the issue of immigration. >> but do you really think that
