and kills a hundreds of thousands, tens of thousands of your citizens the fact of the matter is down. trump wants the southern border to remain chaotic. we had a chance to pass that bipartisan tough border security bill that would have allowed the president to close sections of the border when crossings get too high. you know who stopped that bill from becoming law? donald trump, because he does not want the border under control he wants a chaotic because he thinks that helps him politically. and so it was a real contrast yesterday, joe biden at the border asking for congress to give him exceptional new powers and resources to control the border. and donald trump, seeing the border not as a problem that needs to be fixed, but as a problem that he can exploit. and i think the american public are onto this. republicans say they care about the border but actually are never willing to do anything about it. >> so i know you've pointed in new york three were tom suozzi won that open seat in a special congressional election race as how democrats can not run away from the issue of immigration.
5:01 am
>> but do you really think that >> democrats are how do you think that democrats should talk about immigration? an election year >> so there's additional polling out yesterday that shows when democrats just simply point out what happened on the bipartisan border bill that it was the toughest bill if enacted in decades. and it was killed by donald trump >> that >> republicans political advantage on the issue of immigration disappears it literally disappears because people, you know, kind of have come to that conclusion that yeah, republicans talk a big game on immigration, but have they ever done anything? no, they haven't. i think democrats should lead with a simple message. we believe in border security. we want to protect the border and we have a plan to get that done republicans have no plan to get that done. now, i also think that we should talk about the importance of providing a pathway to citizenship for people that are here, we should maintain robust legal immigration, but we should not be afraid by talking about the fact that we are now the party
5:02 am
that has the plan to control and protect the border. and it is republicans who are standing in the way of controlling the border because they want the border to remain out of control because they think it helps them politically. i think we should lead with that message. democrats historically have been a little reticent to be out front on our front foot talking about border security. it's not a republican issue. it's an american issue. everybody in this country cares about the border. everybody wants legal immigration and democrats should be out there on the offensive telling the story of what happened in congress over the past few months and telling people how donald trump really is trying to keep the border a mess. >> senator chris murphy from connecticut, we appreciate your time this morning. thank you. >> extraordinary very images of defiance and courage. thousands of people crowding the streets in moscow to pay their respects to the late russian opposition leader alexei navalny. >> donald trump expected the

5:04 am
now, despite the danger that, that put them in our matthew chance has been reporting all morning long. he is outside the cemetery right now. matthew, if you can hear us, what do you see? >> yeah, well, you're right. i'm right outside the boris berezovsky cemetery in one of the suburbs of moscow where as you've just been saying, the casket of alexey navalny is already inside with what we think our friends and family attending the actual burial. but you can see how many thousands of people there are outside the cemetery gates carrying flowers, carrying messages mourners that are have been queuing up here, lining up here all day to pay their last respects to russia's most prominent opposition figure. but it is also a very tight security operation. can see there were a riot police like this one here who are lining the entire route that the funeral procession has taken.
5:05 am
and they're not letting these thousands of people who have come to pay their respects to alexey navalny at the cemetary. actually, inside the grounds of that facility, there's a metal will detect has been set up, their patch will be allowed in later, but at the moment they have not been and they're just standing out here waiting for the opportunity to go inside all day. john, we've been seeing people with messages of support chanting those slogans, chanting alexey navalny's name, chanting opposition slogans anti-kremlin slogans anti-war slogans as well. these are exactly the kind of scenes that the kremlin did not want to see, particularly in the weeks running up to a presidential election in this country in which vladimir putin is expected to be reconfirmed for a fifth term as the leader. but nevertheless dissent in russia is barry barely tolerated over
5:06 am
the past couple of weeks since the death of navalny, we've seen hundreds of people across the country be detained just for laying flowers at makeshift memorials in town in some cities across russia. at the moment. as i say, the thousands of people that have turned out an alexey navalny's funeral. they're not being detained. we're not seeing any police action as far as i'm aware. so far to clear up these crowds that might change in the future obviously, we're going to keep close eye on it. but as i say, the riot police are making absolutely sure that nobody steps out of the bounds of the designated root of this funeral, while so many people, so many russians here are gathering, as i say, to pay their respects matthew chance outside the cemetery, matthew was so great having you there so that we can see these crowds, these thousands of people who have >> arrived to pay their respects to alexey navalny, but to also see that security, those, those troops that are standing by there on watch
5:07 am
guarding matthew, stay safe. we'll come back to you as soon as we can literally right over his shoulder. you can see there john. let's talk more about this joining us right now is nina khrushcheva. she's a russian historian and author, also the great granddaughter of 20th century soviet leader nikita khrushchev. it's really good to see you, nina, thank you so much for coming in. i mean, what do you think of the sea of people that we are seeing? matthew chance's seeing on the ground from the va more of the funeral service through now, the burial that we just continue you to get more images out. what do you think of this >> thank you. wael, it is heartbreaking and heartwarming both at the same time. i'm not surprised. i actually expected this amount of thousands of people because we see that we saw it when the presidential candidate, who was not registered by this nadezhdin
5:08 am
was running with an anti-putin slogans and collected many, many signatures around russia and people were queuing to sign up for him. >> so we the protests to somewhere brewing and then it can jump out at any moment. but what i'm also interested in is how despite all the police and you wouldn't expect that any less, it is allowed to take place. it is allowed to take place the way it has taken place. and of course the slogans originally was just the memory of alexey navalny. that's what they were chanting. and then it started to be no war putin is a murderer and so on. but the state allowed it to continue to go through with two kind of follow some christian norms that yulia navalnaya, the white widow. now, widow alexey navalny spoke about the putin has no, he's a false christian because he doesn't allow an
5:09 am
exchange to be buried properly. so they allowing it to happen. and so even despite the fact that in what, two weeks russia would go through, we confirming reconfirming putin. they still allowed it to happen. so for them it's important to show the nord as godless and they're not as barbarian as they are being presented. and so i think it's good for alexey navalny and i'm thinking about either in previous years the funeral of andrey soccer of in 1989 when when there was actually a little police, but a lot of many more, even winning more people than now. so state kind of stayed away from the funeral, but allowed it to happen just an update from our teams that were saying the latest update in is that alexei navalny's coffin has now been lowered into the ground to the sound of frank sinatra song. my way. >> his team >> reported this during a live transmission of the burial ceremony. that's seems
5:10 am
something that alexei navalny would do, right? but it seems that that's the way that alexey navalny in the way he kind showed his defiance, often was with humor and doing it his way. >> i want to play for you what we heard from two people who were within the procession that matt, our correspondent, matthew chance, spoke with because it is i find it so remarkable that people brave that people would stop and speak is in a limited way about why they were there this morning. let me play this for you >> why if you come here today with so many other russians to payers bag yes, it's symbolic value for people who don't agree with everything that's happened in russia, right? i can be specific because we can say like but the words, you know, it's risky for you to be here. yeah, it's certainly risky. why take them
5:11 am
>> because that's my stance on vegas. and i believe that's to show oh solidarity that you are not the one who is has to deal with this >> all right. so thank you very much. i've got i've got polina. i mean, here as well >> the fact that navalny is dead, what is that united people here. what does it, what does it say about the state of the colors united? some people about is the same time. it's quite obviously horrible, says it upsets me. obviously. other i have people here in this group, but i think it's kind of a uniting thing. since a lot of people come, we came here to pay their last goodbyes. she >> was one. >> what does it say about your country, about russia? >> they're obviously some people who are i guess against the whole thing. that's happening right now. i can say the visily but there are some people who have good the cards basically it
5:12 am
>> what, what does what are these people up against that or that are showing up today in speaking out and what does it mean for the resistance and opposition movement today? in russia? nina >> well, that doesn't surprise me. i was just there until last month for six month and there is a lot of apposition. i mean, that of course the kremlin is very eager to make sure that nothing comes out. know steam would come out, but you talk to people in there they're against it. i mean, they are afraid because the state has very long hands and we see that. but at the same time it's not as monolithic, it is often presented here in the west, so it's another thing. the reason they come out, and it's dangerous, but it's not as dangerous. once again as we think it is. from far away, because this is an officially sanctioned thing, they may be studied. i don't know whether they're going to be named collected or somehow because we have thousands, maybe tens of
5:13 am
thousands of people would be difficult to arrest everybody. but it is officially sanctioned and there's an officially sanctioned thing. it's reasonably safe to go out precisely because it's allowed to do that. it's a christian thing to do. so people may be in danger, but they don't think there is as much danger when they do an individual projects because they are masses of people. i was a bit surprised, but not really when they were shan snow to war, but that will later in the process. and i don't think the state decided it's it seems to be the state decided it's not worth really shutting it down because it would create more problems that it actually, that it actually solve. so in this way, russia's still protests when the state alone how's it to speak out? and i think that more and more putin will stay in his power for another six years. the lessons going to happen the last the state will take chances of this kind. because once again, i think
5:14 am
after 25 years in power, who didn't gets more and more paranoid. so people will be less inclined even in there officials but possibility protests to go up >> nina khrushcheva. thank you so much for coming on this morning. jump. >> so a classified documents trial during the republican national convention, it is possible and we could learn if it will happen not long after donald trump arrives in a florida court's shortly brand new video from the scene were more than 100 people were killed in gaza in a major winter storm, could dump a record setting amount of snow. now, i'm 6-4. >> it could be two of me do you know why i selected you to crush what makes you weak >> anyone who dares in? okay >> me or my country shall feel my gut

but at the same time, it does have a lot to do with it. i mean, what does the culmination of what the judge is going to decide here? what do you think it really does mean for donald trump's case in georgia? >> you know, i think really the defense has won some points just in bringing the motion and that is they've they've drawn some of the aspects of the investigation and the prosecution and the case into question. it doesn't have any bearing on whether or not the indictment is solid at this point, whether or not there will be motions, the judge will denial later on about dismissing or at least the judge will consider on later on certain parts of the indictment. he's ruled on certain things like that. but this is cast the investigation and the prosecution itself into a little bit of a negative light. and so the question will be, was that financial benefit obtained and some may argue that if the judge believes that the relationship between mr. wade and ms willis began before his appointment? that the
5:37 am
appointment and the subsequent length of the prosecution and the monies that were significant amount of money, i must $1 million between him and his law firm that was paid for his work on the investigation was actually a benefit by allowing the de a to pay at the time for her social acquaintance to send money to him and his law firm. >> that may be an argument we hear today. i just don't i don't know how far they will go, but the crux of it will be. >> was there an >> actual conflict or has there been the appearance of a conflict or impropriety? that's my call into question. both the investigation and if there is a conviction at some point down the road, i don't think it ever happens now before the election. but if there is a conviction, at some point down the road, does the integrity of that conviction. now be called into question? >> one thing that this is already definitely accomplishes a delay of some sort part in terms of where this thing moves and how quickly it moves. it's great to see you. michael has always thank you so much. >> all right. super tuesday is just days away. so what are the

lessons that the campaign should be taking as they head into that event from everything that's happened so far with us, as you can see, cnn senior data reporter harry enten harrak coming out of michigan. there was a lot of talk for 24 hours about the size of the uncommitted vote that people voted against president biden and the democratic primary. do you see this as the giant deal at some do i do not, mr. berman? i do not. all right. this is the uncommitted vote in michigan primaries with an incumbent democratic president on the ballot. look on committed got 13%. that's not nothing. but in 2012 where there was no big uncommitted campaign against that incumbent president barack obama. uncommitted got 11%. now, i'm not a big mathematician, but 11% and 13% are pretty close together. yes, there was high turnout for uncommitted this time around, but there was also high turnout for the incumbent president joe biden. what was really a primary in which we all knew he was going to win. so the fact is, i don't see this as a very big deal.

>> it's good that our senior data reporter is admitting that he's not a very good mathematician, but be that as it may, a lot of people saw this result as president biden having problems with the left in his party. is that whereas problem lines no, i do not believe it's where it lies. all right. so look, biden versus trump among democrats, look among very liberal, look at this margin that joe biden has 97 point. you can't get very much higher than 97 points, i guess 100 points be higher, but he's right up near the edge. where is joe biden's problem among democrats? well, it's a little bit among those somewhat liberals at 87 points, but really where it is, it's, it's among moderate democrats look at this, this margin right here, 73 points. i look back in the polls back in 2020, those exit polls, a pew research validated survey, and that margin was it's closer to 85, so we've seen a double-digit decline among moderate democrats binds actually holding pretty gosh darn strong among very liberal democrat. >> what do you see an enthusiasm? yes. so the other thing is, all right, maybe they liked joe biden, but they're not necessarily going to turn
5:40 am
out and maybe they're not going to turn out because of how they view his handling of the gaza war extremely motivated to vote in 2024. look at this. this is before and after the israel-hamas war began among very liberal democrats 73% said they were extremely motivated to vote versus all other democrats. it was 58%. now after the gaza war began, look at this 73%. so this number has stayed fairly steady. all other democrats, again, fairly steady, but fewer of those other democrats are extremely motivated to vote. the other little nugget we'll put in there, whereas joe biden's problem again, in the middle independence biden versus trump margin in 2020, biden won by 11. look at where we are in an average of polls now, trump plus three points. the fact of the matter is john biden's problem is in the middle with independents and moderate democrats. it's not on the left part of his party harry and bring in the math. thank you very much. >> thank you. joining us now is cnn >> senior political commentator, former special assistant to president george w
5:41 am
bush, scott jennings and cnn political commentator, the former south carolina democratic state representative, bakari sellers. i tried to say that as fast as possible so we can actually get to it bakari does joe biden have a problem with the left or the middle >> i don't think he has a problem with the either. i think one of the things we're going to see is that he has to listen to those hundred thousand voters who came out and cast a ballot of uncommitted. and he has to make sure that over the next few months he does what he can particularly in the war in gaza to mitigate the deaths that have been caused over the last few months. and that's a very difficult challenge. the ceasefire or cessation of fires, something he and his administration have been working on for months, but that's a very real issue. i think one of the things that we're focused on this morning is joe biden and i met you weaknesses in the democratic party, but primary after primary, donald trump has gotten a third to 40% of
5:42 am
individuals who come out and vote against him. i think that there is a blinking red lights or they would donald trump not as much with joe biden? >> so scott, let's ask that a different way, because historically it's been the democratic party that is seen as having the bigger and more unwieldy coalition is that still the case or do the republicans now with the maga movement and clearly some more quote, unquote establishment republicans still backing the legs and nikki haley, did they have a more complicated coalition? >> i'm having trouble telling the >> democrats and republicans apart when it comes to looking at these electoral coalitions, i think the people going in and out of each party it's changing a lot. you've got a lot of working class voters, multi-racial working class coalition flowing into the republican party. you've got college educated suburban white-collar voters that have been flowing out of the republican party and sometimes voting democrat, you've got tons of hispanics coming towards donald trump even have african americans coming in towards donald trump. so i
5:43 am
think both parties actually, john are dealing with i don't know if unwieldy is the right word, but certainly shifting and drifting coalitions, that's different than what we have been sort of analyzing for the last 20 or 30 years as it relates to presidential campaign campaigns. if i may respond to bakari, joe biden has some problems. i don't know if he has problems on the left. that's bakari's department, but in the middle, he has problems. immigration is a problem. inflation as a problem, just general economic anxiety is a problem. and bakari knows it and that's why joe biden's job approval numbers are so low because the middle of the country country thinks he's failing and there's some nostalgia for the trump economy that people think was good pre-pandemic >> bakari, i feel like by the rules of this your name was invoked, so you got you got a rebuttal here >> but i reserve my time. i reserve my time. no. i think that there are this this is a different type of election and i'd like to talk about, does the science of the politics for a moment. and i think scott
5:44 am
would agree with this. this is not a persuasion election these two candidates are so entrenched people had their opinions about joe biden and donald trump. not much is going to move. and so when you ask a question like does he have problems with the left of the center? i don't really think that matters because this is not a persuasion election. this is purely a gotv race it's whether or not individuals will be motivated to come out and vote for their respective candidates, or they'll vote for the couch. so whether or not he has a problem in the middle of the left, maybe squishy. i think it's decently mood. the question is whether or not he'll have the energy with those people in those base voters who are going to come out and vote for him because this is purely a gop tv or get out the vote election is not a persuasion election. >> let the record show sadly, that chad jennings made front of requests word you use unwieldy is not a good word, and bakari just made for my entire question yeah. right off the top, we're bringing people together where the problem

5:46 am
people have called her a rising star. she is a star. i mean, katie britt was one of the greatest senate recruits we had in the last cycle. the contrast she offers to joe biden is obvious youngest member of the senate, sort of rebutting this enfeebled old president. i mean, i love i love the visual contrast, but the american people are getting ready to meet katie britt and they're going to love katie britt. republicans already know who she is the senator's lover. she's doing a great job for alabama, so katie britt one to watch for a long time to come bakari ten seconds or less >> yeah. first of all, i had to google and wikipedia who katie britt was. i'm sorry. and i talk about this for living as far as ten second. she's going to have to talk about ivf and what they've done in alabama and she's going to twist herself in a pretzel. they're trotting her out there because she's a young woman who i soon they believe can talk about this issue. but republicans can not get themselves out this pretzel that they've created, this slippery slope that they created themselves >> scott jennings, bakari sellers. it must be friday.

5:53 am
we're going back and forth on whether they're not, we actually showed this graphic on tv, but some of the computer model show up to 12 feet of snow in the highest of elevations across the sierra nevada mountain rage. let's bring it down to where humans actually operate. let's say lake tahoe level, roughly 6,000 feet still possible, four to six feet of snowfall. that is crippling and that will bring traffic to any well, any kind of transportation to a virtual standstill. and below 3,000 feet still, one to four feet of snow possible. remember, this is not just a mountain top snowstorm were talking on the leeward side of the sierra nevada mountain range i'm looking at you, reno. you will feel major impacts from this latest information from the national weather service has hoisted a blizzard warning for eastern nevada. be busy satellite and radar at the moment, lighting up across the iat corridor through the donner pass, it will be impossible to travel across this area disorienting, at least we could see snowdrifts as high as one

we are going to do everything that we can as a team. i worked with a wonderful group of administrators and our goal is to present a beautiful plan to put the community back together through the kids or the border crisis is taking center stage in the 2024 presidential campaign. >> during dueling >> visits to texas, both president biden and donald trump tried to put the blame for the ongoing issue on each other. with me now, is senator roland gutierrez a state senator from texas center. thank you so much for being with us what do you hear from your constituents? obviously, illegal immigration is a big issue around the country. it's a particularly large issue in texas what do they tell you when they come to you >> oh, thank you, john. well, i mean, first off, the people in eagle pass specifically want the abbott's theater or stop. he's taken over the city park. the park where they have
5:56 am
concert venues, the park where they gather, and they've, the government has taken over for the last two years. it really is at the aggregate performance when in fact only a few hundred people crossed in eagle pass for the last several weeks. we surely have an immigration problem on our southern border, but congress needs to fix it. and the only way to fix it is through comprehensive immigration reform. i think that people know that they know that republicans have punted on this issue two weeks ago. so we do-nothing republicans absolutely need to get to work. they need to stop listening to donald trump and stop politicizing this issue. people are very frustrated about that now it's an oversimplification. but what do you say to republicans because we get notes from them all the time who say, well, what about the fact that border crossings dropped under donald trump and rows under president biden well i'd say that's a lie. >> number one, chido 42, which was to stay in mexico policy actually put us in more danger
5:57 am
and had more back-and-forth crossing. because under title 42, a migrant who crossed through the river in would be sent back, was never registered, and they're second entry is never an illegal re-entry under title eight, which we re-impose last summer. my crossings slowed and then there was an an ab an increase. and the reason for that increases because we've been seeing migrant patterns for the last 50 years this is nothing new. but while we're talking about this so-called crisis we're not talking about everything else that's happened in texas. the loose republican gun laws that killed those 19 kids in uvalde, texas the reproductive freedoms that have been taken from women. >> the >> high health care that we have in texas, some of the highest in the united states. i mean, we are broken on so many issues, and republicans are simply trying to change the narrative for sure, but we can fix immigration if they only come to the table and do it this week in the senate you
5:58 am
brought up reproductive freedom. there was an effort by democrat tammy duckworth from illinois to pass a bill that would guarantee the rights of parents to seek ivf in vitro fertilization treatment. it was blocked by a republican senator, if elected, what would you do? >> we've got to give reproductive freedom to women. we have to have them government should have no part in the health care decisions and the reproductive decisions between a woman and her doctors. simple as that, we need to codify roe and beyond. >> we >> need to eliminate the filibuster on this issue. and we also have to talk about expanding the supreme court. there's no real magic here. we've got to nine in 18, 69 because there was nine circuits, there's 13 circuits now. so we need to have a discussion about a court that's not bought and paid for about a court that has transparency and ethics i'd doubt that this court has anything to do. we want our
