you've got a couple of other options. one option is to go in your kitchen and take out a colander are great and project dozens of tiny crescent shapes of the eclipse onto a light surface that's a great way to view the eclipse another great way is to stand under a tree. and if there's a general wind blowing on the leaves of a tree and that's assuming you're in a part of the country with a leafed out trees, then you'll see an amazing array of shimmering crescent shapes on the ground that's amazing i will say i did the pinpoint camera not as cool as the glasses, i suspect, but i do want to ask you just finally before i let you go >> does it get cooler during the total eclipse? is that real? >> that's a very good point. and if the day starts out sunny and warm don't forget your jacket because you'll be surprised how cool it gets

>> all right, good to know michael zoeller really appreciate it. thank you so much. >> thank you >> and thank you for joining us, king charles starts now >> thank you. okay. mr. barbie i say no lock-in >> see him in studio in new york city we're not. >> going to waste >> your time with gayle king on eons, but you can call me gail and charles barkley >> i probably should not denied basketball oh god. candace parker, pulitzer prize winner mega haberman sports media store. stephen smith the atlantic thompson and academy award winning producer. then lake charles starts now welcome
7:02 pm
welcome >> on this wednesday, it is cold and rainy new york city, but it doesn't matter because all hard to warm idea hard so warm. we are very excited to be here tonight. we've got lots to talk to, including maggie haberman. you just saw that from the new york times, she's going to join us in just a few minutes to give us a window into what's happening right now. and former president donald trump's camp, there's always something so we hope you'll stick around for that. espn stephen a. smith, i just saw him in the hallway looking very lovely and a shade of salmon like that jacket. >> i thought it was pink >> it's really salman. >> there'll be >> here in just a few minutes do because it feels like we were talking about this all day today. we have to talk about the biggest story in the country right now, which is what charles barkley march. march madness. march madness. he has but the number ones for staying gone today is march madness. women? yes. yes, we are having a ball, but we're
7:03 pm
having a moment and you know that beyond say song, who run them? well girls, it's a shining moment for women's basketball. i know, you know all about it. let's hear it for the ladies. caitlin clark, we're talking about you, angel reese. love you, talking about you. page becker's talking about you and juju watkins, who is just a freshman. this woman is amazing. women's college basketball stars are lighting it up in the world. i have to say, take a notice or than 12, just think about this number, charles, 12 million people turned in monday night's game i will lsu was actually 12.3 wherever you had account point throughout account on my tv, it was even more have a nielsen box >> that's more than any college basketball game and espn's history more viewers think about this for out of five games from last year's nba finals. more viewers then what do you think about that >> double one, i'm proud of the ladies disappointed in the nba,
7:04 pm
but proud of these ladies. yes. >> more than nba >> so our next guest is somebody who was held the title of most famous women's basketball player on the planet. let's welcome college basketball player of the year three time listen her stats three-time wnba champion and basketball icon, candace parker. hey, candace parker. >> hello, how hi you all. thanks for having me. >> i know. what do you make it this candice's moment, everybody keeps saying the women are having a moment, but 12.3 million viewers just took my breath away and then, watching the game the other night really, i was in awe of what i saw on the court what was really cool was i was actually in florida visiting my family and i was walking past, you know, the >> bars and the restaurants and every game on was the iowa lsu game. and so i think it is more than a moment. i think it is momentum it's a bird's-eye view into what we've realized
7:05 pm
for a long time that women's basketball is exciting. and i think it's ironic that now we're talking about star power in women college basketball when first so long it was described as a team sport where everybody has to touch so ball. now we're seeing these stars that are just so talented and so skilled and able to scoring so many different ways >> as one of the best to ever do it how, how exciting is it for you? the cds women around the world right now, because we mentioned all the ladies is not just caitlin yeah, it's not just angel is not just pages, not just juju this is a great time for college. and now these ladies are going to be joining you next year. >> well, listen. chuck, i think it's it's huge for women's basketball in general. and i just want to say like even those that came before me, you think about the cheryl miller's. think about the cheryl swoops. do you think about cynthia cooper's and the
7:06 pm
tina thompson's and elisa leslie's. and it goes on and on and on that have laid the foundation for this. and this is kinda one of those things where i think the door just keeps getting wider and wider and more and more open and so i think now accompanies and tv and viewership is up because it was given a chance to succeed and the numbers don't lie. that's what we'd like to say. >> yeah. no kansas. do you think that the talent has been there all along? it's just that it's taken the country, the world to really focus on what is, what is possible in women's sports in the wnba >> i think i think the talent has been there. but like anything, it takes time to grow and it takes time for people to want to be a part of it and to see it i think it does take star power and we're seeing how the value of that in the caitlin clark's and the angel reese is we're also seeing the value of it being more than just sports like this started off as a rivalry. if you think
7:07 pm
about it, and the national championship game last year with angel reese and caitlin clark and that's what sports is. and i love the fact that now we're embracing that in women's sports because so, for so long in sports, i'm supposed to not like chuck because he played for the sixers and i was a bulls fan. i was supposed to not like the lakers because i grew up in chicago and so with that being said, it's okay in women's sports that have a team that you root four and have somebody that you boo. and we're seeing the benefit of that now. >> but there's always comes a negative candace, you know, this neck inside of this moment for women's college basketball, we're talking about lsu star player that would be angel reese, who announced today. this is good news. she's entering the wnba draft. she had this tier field response to the harsh scrutiny that she's been dealing with lately >> i've been through so much. i've seen so much. i've been attacked so many times death threats. i've been sexualized. i've been threatened. all this
7:08 pm
has happened since i won the national championship and i said that the day since then i'd like to know from you can is what you made of her comments because it's been troubling to me that she'd got some grief because people say, look, she did >> all this trash talking and now because she's lost, she's she's now trying to elicit sympathy that is not what i saw when i heard her words today. or yesterday. what did you think >> you know, i think it's there's a price with fein and unfortunately now with the landscape, the way that college basketball is, and we talk about this time and time again with young tv stars and tennis and mlb and all that stuff. is these things are coming to them when they're still 17, 18 years old. and you know, we always talk about in the nba how fans, fan is short for fanatic they're going to come and yell at you if you don't meet their parlay they're going to scrutinize you when you lose and they're going to celebrate you when you, when and
7:09 pm
unfortunately, i think the stars now are having to learn these lessons at a younger age. and i just hope that's the ncw that universities that people are able to step in and help you stars navigate not just the burden of fame and dealing with all that comes with it, but also financially, like you're upfront given so much money that is so well-deserved. how are you then planning for your future as well? so i think that this is the job of an nc doublet of a university to make sure that they surround the student athlete with the support that they need >> last question obviously, you pot on my broadcast and family is to o'neal are bigger on tuesday night, as he is on thursday night? >> stack is shack 24/7. so you probably no more or no less, but i got to say it is a treat to be able to work with you. all i in all seriousness, grew
7:10 pm
up idolizing you and sometimes i have to pinch myself and i'm sitting at a desk with you i'm i'm going to. give you this moment for a second because i joke a lot. but working with you all is unbelievable. and the kid in me cannot believe that i'm broadcasting with the round mound of rebound big superman. so i have a great time with you all >> you know. obviously you coming off a championship with the aces yeah, there's going to be obviously, you guys, y'all are terrific and it's an honor. but can you talk about the juce that kaitlyn has gone to bring to indiana next year because man, all eyes go beyond the fever you guys all lot of defendant champs. but it's got to be some like, man, it's going to be so exciting now a new is she's going to be bringing to the wnba 100%. i think anytime you are able to have new eyeballs and a new fan, fan base and you know, i
7:11 pm
think it's going to be beneficial to not only just the fever, but, you know, to the entire wnba and my challenge to the wnba is to continue to raise the bar and know that you know, with more stars comes more expectations and so i hope that we're ready to continue to grow and blend continue to build. because a lot, a lot has been said that when you leave college and you go to the wnba, i remember diana taurasi told me this when i was coming out of tennessee and i was the first draft pick and rookie of the year and mvp and she's like, yeah, this is the heyday. she's like and then as time goes on, people forget and i hope that we take that as a challenge. and we say that no, we're going to continue to raise the bar and make her more of a star well candace i'm really excited about the game and i know you've heard this, that the women's tickets for the final four are higher than the men's. i like that. i like that. i think that's says a lot. i'll be there. i'm excited yeah.
7:12 pm
>> yes. well, good luck to tell. good good luck to tennessee at the file a four oh, sorry. bad example a shot i know the thing. if you're not first, you're last, but if you losing your first round and you can't make comments like that. so oh, wow >> there are drop the mic. is dropped we're going to continue that conversation then who like her, who's also thank you. >> awesome with a capital a, we're going to continue this conversation with we've invited a friend espn stephen smith. do you think you'll have something to say? he's going to join his right after the break seven astronauts >> shutting off on a scientific mission, columbia, houston? object. >> i didn't know anything concerning it. there were people that did though >> the space shuttle accident,

7:18 pm
>> what's your reaction to that? what's your take on that? well, first of >> all, understand she's been through a lot since you want to championship last year. she pointed out that her life has been miserable unfortunately, we live in a society where there's some no good racist out there that you'll certainly know that some of them got into e are some of the criticism was aimed in her direction from those be about strictly certainly not. i'm just talking about that's one element. then there's the other element of further and carved. you just, just a real hyperactive competition. she was somebody that was very bragged doses to some degree, she taunted caitlin clark. people forget that caitlin clark had spent the entire season last year taunting all of her opponents while she was busy, embarrassing one of them after another because she it's that phenomenal and she's that great. and then angel reese got the best of her and made sure that she rubbed in in a bit excessively. people didn't forget about that. just so you have that element and people looking at hur's classless of stuff like that >> why some people say she brought the backlash on herself? yes. to some degree, but not to the degree that she received it. people can cross
7:19 pm
the lines. certainly you can be you don't mind being the bad guy. he would know a thing or two about that. you don't mind it at all, right. but it can get out of line. it can get out of hand and certainly in this country as an. american, you see it happening all the time. so i really felt bad for her and i love the fact that a teammates came up and spoke on her behalf again, she invited some of the scrutiny, no doubt, but she didn't invite it to the degree that she received it. and remember, this is a young lady here. she's not a seat he's a veteran experiences in college. you went to national championship. you're not anticipating that this level of vitriol is going to come and get direction. nevertheless, it did. and it's a lesson about the game. i don't think what bothers me is it became so personal against remember that's what bothered or remember, it gets personal because people are hoping that it will have a personal effect on you. so it will derail you for what you're focused on and what you're trying to do to achieve. she is great. lsu was great. and as a result, there's a whole bunch of
7:20 pm
people in this world who ain't great but wish they were and as a result of that dead definition of success is bringing you down to their level because they can't possibly elevate themselves to your level. >> she's young, she's she's young. and so she's had to learn that the hard way. but i think she'll be tougher. she'll be stronger and she'll be an even greater lady and a woman down the line because of it. >> you know, are really thought this through this whole thing of last year because after the games, they were talking more about the animosity and the finger-pointing. and it was a great thing for lsu and what caitlin did for the game last year. i thought right after the game, people spent more time talking about what was going on between them tooth and the greatest of lsu and then i feel bad now because instead of talking about the greatness of caitlin clark were talking about this bs and i feel bad for the young lady. well we'll say this, even though they're talking about it to some degree, were talking about it right now. a vast majority of the conversation has been about the grade is the case in class.
7:21 pm
and should be this this i had the pleasure of doing an event listener in iowa where she and i did an event together, 11,000 some people packed outside to watch her. they certainly weren't there for me. they were there for her they have to. but in the >> point n assist and >> let me tell you something right now, spending time with her, spending time with the parents or whatever, she's an incredible role auto very poised, very season. and it's going to be incredibly marketable. and one of the reasons why i like your tweets tonight of the game started out saying, wait a second, let's see what happens. let's see what happens then further on,
7:22 pm
you said never mind, have a mind. you have >> nobody can stop it out. >> like to say this >> age or race along with caitlin clark does nothing wrong would be in the villain at times, as long as it doesn't cross lines, the audience it's nothing wrong with it because it helps and kansas, i was listening to canada's two wonderful candace maga talking about this as well that when you have a villain and you have a hero in some people's eyes everyone's been marketed. >> you're not going to forget about age reese, you're going to remember the sheet lost monday night, but it mattered because she won the national championship against that same caitlin clark a year earlier. it was the first time and five and six matches a caitlin clark, ever beat angel reese. so we've got to take that into consideration as well. they're both going to the wnba. they're both household names. they're both going to be successful. and she just got the bit of you in the last round before you both went to the pro level, it's okay. >> yeah. i charles said he was a villain when we he said that he was a villain and was like

age that we're living in back in the day, you didn't have social media. so back in the de you at the mercy of the fourth estate, the media this day and age that's not necessarily the case. and far more often than not, the athletes are the ones getting themselves in trouble because in an effort to really express themselves and the show their independence in the show that they have a voice and then not dependent on the media, you go out there, you say some things and, you know, when you'd look in the media for large, you understand this bag >> some things to stephen. do you ever think that sometimes you create some of the controversy about what i >> mean, just >> just your delivery sometimes when i first met you, i thought do you always holler like that? right? >> the answer is yes and it has say that's you always that and answers yes. yes. >> but sometimes it seems to me that you'd like to stir things up. well, you >> could say that and i'm not going to deny that that what the result is, but that's not my intent. i say what i mean and i mean what i say. i'm not

right there. he's going to release called calls people, hostages, pardon them. yeah. so i think that what is happening is a couple of things. i think that is he is running and he is facing the threat of losing his freedom. he is facing four indictments. there's only one trial scheduled. it starts in a few weeks, but he is essentially running in part for his freedom at minimum. some people think it gets more than that. >> number one, number two, this >> is a rematch between two people who ran against each other for years ago. and now both of them have a record. and so that does actually make it different because with neither one of them is anything just a hypothetical we really haven't seen that in decades in this country very, very long time >> but the way that the former >> president is characterizing this race and characterizing the country is really, really dark and it isn't going to dangerous and well, and it's striking a note for a lot of his supporters. now what we have seen nevertheless, couple of years and we've talked about this a lot, is an increase in the threats of political
7:38 pm
violence. and i think that is a big open question about what we see in the next seven months or beyond between all these cases. how's he going to navigate running for president because even if you're not on trial, you say you got one trial, but you still have all these motions where you're supposed to be the house he go navigate all this. >> it's a great question. and right now there's again still this one trial starts on april 15. that's expected it to last probably about eight weeks. give or take a little bit of time. >> then it rolls >> right into the convention than it rolls into the democratic convention. and then the fall election. and so the big open question is will there be a federal trial related his efforts to subvert the transfer of power in 2020. will that happen in the fall? it seems less and less likely. he seems seems to be very successful in delay, delay, delay. that's is really working for him i miss it now, absolutely. that has been their strategy the whole time. that's decision. i've ever made. >> our lowest prices on the

7:55 pm
that are more stoic, but i absolutely agree that for men, overall, they're probably a little more guarded about their emotions. they're probably a little bit less likely to give up the weakness that they feel about themselves and that i think also makes it harder to develop the kind of deep, intimate friendships later into adulthood that you don't come into adulthood already having made in high-school, the surgeon general says that there is a loneliness epidemic in this country, but vec murthy, he says that there's a loneliness epidemic that we as a country americans or lonelier and feeling more alone than we ever have before. >> it's i understand that it's very important to be serious about that. but the only elixir to it is to go seek the company of other people and put yourself out there. i know that we are wrapped up in technology and it's harder to do, but i promise you, doom is not outside it the door, life and friends and laughter and parties and all of that stuff strippers, all of that stuff. is outside your door. you gotta go to them >> journalist refers hi drink
