and can regain his lunch break. >> try now for free. visit otter.ai. >> ai or download the app, the nba playoffs, i always get emotional, be more concerned about what's going on inside the nba, then what what's going on inside? uh, you, you know, doc, you're right? >> and that's all the time we have. thanks for watching. are you cutting to a commercial western conference finals presented by at&t, continue on to good morning. >> you were alive in a cnn newsroom. i'm jim acosta and washington, we begin with big talk in the bag apple, it was a night of falsehoods and fearmongering former president donald trump's rally in the bronx. the former president spent a large portion of his rally what he called a love fest, talking about his many grievances i'm od don't
7:02 am
trump. i turn on the television. trump trump. trump. trump. how do you do it i said do what? how do you get up in the morning and put get paid. so on bloody have put the pencil and i'll explain it you someday. i was sort of like a hot guy i always had his epistle. >> i said this somebody was i hotter before are hotter now, i had a house so horrible thing, but many of those hostages are dead, it would've never happened if the election weren't rig that was just one of the many lies trump's feud about the 2020 election. trump said that he wouldn't even be running today. how do you actually lost a joe biden? of course, that's not true either. >> you know if i didn't think we won easily one, i would never do this. actually, i won twice. you know, we did much better the second time we got millions more votes, the second time trump did receive a lot of votes last time around the problem is that trump received fewer votes than biden. trump also falsely claimed he oversaw the best job market in history
7:03 am
for black americans. that's not true. the black unemployment and poverty rates have hit historic lows under president biden and his appeal to black and latino voters. he once again in turn to disturbing rhetoric stoking fears about immigrants african americans are getting slaughtered hispanic americans are getting slaughtered. >> and these millions and millions of people that are coming into our country, the biggest impact and the biggest negative back is against our black population and are hispanic population let's discuss more now with democratic congressman ritchie torres of new york. >> he represents the bronx congressman. thank you for joining us. we appreciate it. trump seems to think he could win new york. we just heard him. i tried to cast himself as a better president four black and latino voters and president biden. what do you make of trump trying to woo voters in a deep-blue district like yours
7:04 am
look donald trump is a malignant narcissist with delusions of grandeur he's delusional enough to think that he's the only republican in the world, was remotely competitive in the bronx and as you know, donald trump won said that he's the best president for black americans, including better the abraham lincoln. >> so anyone who ranks himself above abraham lincoln is to dangerously delusional to be in the white house. and the people of the bronx are going to give donald trump a rude awakening come november. you're fired yeah i wonder. if trump was really using the bronx as a backdrop. you probably knows he's not going to win. new york in november, but as a backdrop to continue to appeal to black and latino voters in the poll show that the president is hemorrhaging, support in those categories he's not doing as well as he did back in 2020. what should the biden campaign due to turn that around, de issue there for the president that he needs to
7:05 am
work on. >> okay. there is fair criticism. there should be a laser sharp focus on the bread and butter issues that weigh heavily on communities of color. the biden presidency has been a successful six success story and we need president biden to come to places like the bronx and tell his success story the president kept the price of insulin at $35 a month for senior citizens on medicare, which is a lifesaver in a game changer for the people in the bronx, which has among the highest rates of diabetes in the country there are billions of dollars in infrastructure funding, clean energy funding blowing into disadvantaged communities like those in the bronx and so the president has to tell that story because he has a successful record on which to run yeah. >> congressman, i also wanted to ask you about this. trump was also sharing the stage where the whole cast of characters, including rubin diaz who sat on the new york city council until 2021. diaz has a history of making anti lgbtq comments, as you know, you ran against him. and at one
7:06 am
point, de said he apologizes for judge juan merchan, who is the judge, of course, and the trump hush money case, because bichon, he says is hispanic. let's listen to that what i want to tell you first the asset puerto rican hispanic or want to apologize to you? for the conduct or jones or george juan merchan after hispanic, i want to apologize he's being used he has been used to destroy you but we know better than that. >> yeah, a congress went what did you make of that in the reference comments for disgraceful attack on the independence of the judiciary you know, keep in mind that
7:07 am
reverend will be diaz senior does not speak for the bronx. >> he does not speak for the latino community he speaks for no one but himself when i ran against him back in the 2020 election cycle, i said that he was a trump republican masquerading as a democrat. and yesterday he finally came out of the closet as a trump republican, but he's fundamentally under unrepresentative of where most of the bronk stance and i did want to ask you about israel very quickly. congressman, the united nations top court as ordering israel to immediately halt its military offensive in rafah. your response to that, does prime minister netanyahu need to bring this war to an end sooner rather than later. >> look for me, there should be i think there is a need to remove hamas from power because of hamas remains in power never will never be security for israel and they will never be peace between israelis and palestinians. hamas has said that it is intent on repeating
7:08 am
october 7, the deadliest day produced in solid cause. but it must be done in a manner that minimizes casualties, that minimizes the loss of civilian life i do feel we can strike a thoughtful balance between the military necessity of moving hamas from power and the need for humanitarianism all right. >> congressman ritchie torres of new york of the bronx, we should note congressman. thanks very much for your time. we appreciate it. >> hunter biden's infamous laptop is expected to be used as evidence against him as his upcoming trial on felony gun charges. special counsel, david weiss, plans to use the laptop to backup his narrow claim that hunter biden was addicted to illegal drugs when he bought a gun back in 2018, violating federal law president's son has pleaded not guilty and cnn reporter marshall cohen joins me now, from outside the courthouse in wilmington, delaware. marshall what indications are we getting about what other evidence will be used at the trial? >> hey, jim, while hunter biden was at the state dinner last
7:09 am
night at the white house. but today he'll be at the federal courthouse right behind me in wilmington, delaware. and that's because we're just ten days away from the start of his trial. as you mentioned, he is facing three felony he charges brought by special counsel, david weiss in connection with his purchase and possession of a gun in 2018, the allegations here are that he was addicted to illegal drugs when he bought that gun which is a violation of federal law. we're here to hash out some of the final remaining issues. before this trial begins on june 3 what evidence is going to be allowed in which arguments are going to be kept out as you mentioned, the prosecutors want to bring up the infamous laptop hunter biden laptop, because there are texts on there that show him coordinating with drug dealers to buy crack cocaine again, here in wilmington and other things that they think could help them prove that he was an addict when he bought that gun. meanwhile, hunter biden's attorneys have argued that this whole thing is a political
7:10 am
charade that the prosecutors caved to pressure from republicans. and they're also claiming that there's a lot of stuff that they should stay out of this trial. they don't want to have the jurors be told about the fact that a hunter biden is facing a another separate prosecution in california for his tax problems. so all the parties will be in the court courthouse today. hundred biden is expected to be here and jim, of course, as you know, this is history because we're just ten days away from the first ever criminal trial of the son of the sitting president, jim. >> alright. marshall cohen. thank you very much still to come this morning, a major settlement could soon have colleges paying student athletes directly more on the wide ranging implications. next plus walmart and target slashing prices on everyday essentials and the ongoing fight against inflation will make a difference in your wallet check we hear nothing but space shuttle accidents, usually not one thing.

7:16 am
athletes. sources say it includes the payments of $2.7 billion damages to past and current student-athletes schools will now have up to 20 million a year to share with their athletes and polo sandoval joins us dow polar. this is a huge massive shakeup in college athletics. i mean, it's really going to change everything when it comes to sports at the college level how soon could we see these payments go into student athletes? >> so jim, at its core, this settlement meets potential revenue sharing with very young student athletes. and we could see that tensor your questions starting by fall of 2026, the nc doublet, which is the governing body of college sports making that announcement last night calling the deal a roadmap for college sports. now it stands to financially benefit not just current and future feature athletes, but also those who played division one athletics going back to 2016, the sport's outlet, espn announcing here that at least reporting that that the nc
7:17 am
doublet along with those five power conferences that we should mentioned is now for agreeing to that $2.7 million settlement in part of that, as you saw in the numbers a short while ago, each school would be allowed to share up to 20 million with its athletes per year. now still a lot of questions about how this would be divided. obviously institutions of higher learning would have to adhere to title nine laws, et cetera. but exchange athletes would give up any antitrust litigation against the nc doublet we should mention that a judge still needs to approve this, which could take months. also, espn speaking to several antitrust attorneys saying that this could deal could potentially unravel if any athletes choose to join any other antitrust lawsuits. so yes, it is certainly seismic, but there's also a hold your applause element to this right now, jim yeah. >> and polak in the schools afford this, how would they react? yeah. >> yeah, exactly. how are they going to divide this with? they're pretty big rosters now in terms of the response we have heard from notre dame, the
7:18 am
president's of that university, writing in a statement, i read you a portion of a gym. >> the settlement, though undesirable in many aspects and promising only temporary hurry, only temporarily rather, i should let me start from beginning here, jim, the settlement though undesirable in many aspects, respects and promising only temporary stability is necessary to avoid would, would be the bankruptcy of college athletics to save the great american institution of college sports hungary's must pass legislation that will preempt the current patchwork of state laws to prevent john jenkins, who's on his way out after leaving the university for nearly two decades, we should mention gem that jenkins has previously expressed concern about the future of college athletics so that's certainly something that he's still continuing just to have the sour all right. polo sandoval, big shakeup in college sports. thank you. right now, markets are up slightly rebounding from yesterday when the dow dropped more than 600 points because of worries about inflation. thursday was the worst day for
7:19 am
trading so far this year. but to address day-to-day budget concerns, major retailers like target and walmart are now choosing the cut prices for everyday shoppers in as nathaniel myerson joins me now to discuss this a bit more on nathanial, our folks start noticing this on the shelves. this weekend. what's getting cheaper? >> they are jim, so retailers, they're trying to lower back shopper. so target for example, they're cutting prices on clorox wipes from five, 5709 down to 4909 goldfish prices coming down from 2909 to 79 and then huggies, baby wipes. this is helpful for parents since down to $0.99 from $1.19. so modest price decreases, but certainly welcome news for shoppers who've been strained by inflation yeah parents with babies are going to appreciate the baby wipe prices going down for sure there's no question about that. you could go through those in a heartbeat. and what are the retailers
7:20 am
doing about this? why are they doing this? >> so it's really not revolutionary what the retailers are doing. demand right now from consumers is lower and consumers are really frustrated. so retailers are trying to learn them back there saying, hey, we have, we have lower prices. it's really, i think as much of a marketing strategy as it is kind of a significant price they strop, but certainly customers are very frustrated and they want to see these lower prices. so retailers are trying to answer that. >> i have to think places like walmart and target, they're seeing something and the flow of shoppers coming into stores, they wouldn't be doing this otherwise. so are they going to benefit who is going to benefit here? >> that's exactly right. jim target and walmart, they're really the barometers here and they have so much size and scale with their suppliers that they're able to use that advantage to drive down prices. so the big retailers are really going to benefit the mom and pops and the smaller stores.
7:21 am
they don't have that as much review, as much leverage as these big guys. so you're going to see it more at the big chains. >> all right, some welcome relief for a lot of shoppers out there and the thinner myosin. thank you very much. in the meantime, coming up another woman coming forward accusing uh, sean diddy combs of sexual assault. what we're learning from this new lawsuit coming up next, a dangerous precedent, abortion, drugs, consumed be classified as danger jurists controlled substances in louisiana, we'll talk about that as well violin earth with liev schreiber, premieres june 2 at nine on cnn this, is the

cnn former president donald trump, once again using incendiary rhetoric to demonize immigrants during his appeal to black and hispanic voters, he leaned back on rhetoric historically used to justify genocide, including the immigrants are bringing quote, highly contagious diseases into the country people that have highly contagious diseases are coming into our country. will i get dumping ground? we don't even know what that language you have languages that people don't even know about. we have languages where there's nobody in our country that speaks these languages. they want to get us from within. >> i think that building an army he come up in what's called caravans, the women are treated horribly they're being raped at levels that nobody's ever seen before. >> remember the snake because you're going to get bitten like you never got bitten before. >> now that's a, that's a reference to a bizarre poem called the snake. that's become a staple at his rallies in which he compares them or rents
7:27 am
to snakes. and here's how the maga crowd reacted to that rhetoric yesterday. there were chance of send them back or less discussed. now a cnn political commentators and navarro and k benningfield, and let me start with you. i mean you and i've talked about this many times about his rhetoric, the rhetoric uses to talk about migrants and so on and i just have to ask you in when you look at the poll numbers and you see if you break out the demographics trump is doing better among latinos. he is doing better among african american voters. and it's certainly is a threat to the president's reelection campaign. is there a disk? what do you make it this disconnect well, a few things. >> one is i think america has a little bit of amnesia when it comes to donald trump and frankly being in a courtroom for the last 20 days, i think
7:28 am
has helped him because he's not been out and rally saying the stupid stuff. he says. and the incendiary or wages things he says on a daily basis, we've been focusing on michael cohen would be focusing on stormy daniels. we haven't been focusing on the things that donald trump says another thing is, i think at this 0.20, 24, this is kinda baked in people already know the guys i'm isogenous either already know he's a racist, they already know. he says the basic things and they seem not to take him literally or seriously. they think is part of a cloud act entertainment. >> and then the third thing, jim, and this is the new and i know this as latinos there are some latino immigrants who forget they came here as immigrants and who want to shut the door behind them. >> and who think being anti-immigrant somehow is going to make them pass as more american, pass as whatever. and
7:29 am
that's a very stupid attitude to have because we're false are realize is that when the guide drives thousands of miles to go hunt down latinos in a walmart, is in texas. he doesn't care when you came here he doesn't care what your accent is, what he's looking for. it doesn't look like me. does it sound like me? that's what he's looking for. so, you know, when people are high, something, they're not asking for your papers, they're just anti that yeah. >> i been kate, are you worried am i worried that there's some movement from biden's base to trump. >> i am i think we've seen look, i think you have to if you're smart about the way you consume polling, you're not living and dying by every single poll, but you're looking at the aggregate and you're looking at trend lines. and i think we have seen troubling trends that show that there is a destabilization in biden's base and the coalition that got him elected in 2020. so i would say as a baseline,
7:30 am
yes. i think there is reason to be concerned. i would also say i think the biden campaign is very focused on doing a lot of work to shore that vote back up i think i certainly agree with anna that the more people here from donald trump, the more they hear him on display saying the kinds of things he was saying last night, the more they remember what it was like in 2020 when you had a president who was talking about how immigrants poison the blood of our country. and most people actually reject that kind of rhetoric. most people don't believe that that rhetoric is fundamentally american. and so the task of the biden campaign is to remind people that that's who donald trump is. and i think they're very focused on doing that. >> yeah. and the biden campaign just came out with an ad today and trying to remind folks of what trump has done in the past, going after that amnesia issue that you were talking about. i also wanted to ask you about trump complementing nikki haley last night. let's listen to that well, i think she's gonna be on our team because we have a lot of the same ideas, the same thoughts i appreciated
7:31 am
what she said. >> you know, we had a nasty campaign. it was pretty nasty but she's a very capable person and i'm sure she's gonna be on our team in some form. absolutely i mean, that is quite the reversal i mean, for nikki haley, do you think he could pick her as running mate? yeah. >> no, i don't look. >> i think that there is nothing more important for donald trump than loyalty. >> and nikki haley has shown great disloyalty. >> you could argue that donald trump made nikki haley in some aspects, right? she had no foreign policy experience until he appointed her un ambassador. and i think that both nikki haley and donald trump have something in common. they are transactional. >> they are not people principle of or conviction. >> they are all about what is best for their interests, their personal interests right now, saying those things is best for donald trump's personal interests. but as donald trump
7:32 am
going to forget that his appointee to the un hit the hand that fed his hand neck that's not what donald trump does. and frankly if i was him, i wouldn't trust nikki haley that she doesn't have much of a record of loyalty or conviction or principled positions. she's been on both sides of practically every issue. i like to call her the human wind sock. she's like one of those wind sock they put in front of the he was car dealerships that will then two which by the wind is blowing. >> kate, i did want to ask you because one of the things that'd be one of the things we've been talking about during this campaign is whether or not the president would have some kind of outreach to nikki haley, so-called nikki haley supporters. but you could say, well, maybe they're nikki haley's borders. maybe they're just never trump republicans. yeah, i don't mean to go back to you and say it should the president do this, should present do that, but should he have made a more forceful outreach to those nikki haley supporters? well, up until this point. so i think two things. i think his campaign has. i think
7:33 am
you've seen continually, they've put out statements in the president's voice saying, you are welcome in my campaign, there's a place for you if you're nikki haley voters, i think they have been i also think it's important to recognize there's a difference between nikki haley saying she will vote for donald trump and the people who were supporting nikki haley voting for donald trump. i think a lot of those people were never-trumper who can't stomach the idea of donald trump back in the white house. and i think they, i think the biden campaign will continue to make to try to make inroads with some of those people who so i think are good able for them and i don't think that nikki haley, herself making a calculation that is quite clearly about her own personal future. i don't think that necessarily translates. i think a lot of her voters are looking for a non donald trump option, and that option will be joe biden. >> yeah, that's certainly one of the it's factors out there in this race. all right, kate, dana thank you so much, ladies really appreciate it. good to see both you. >> thank you. very weekend. are just in to cnn, the accuser in the latest diddy lawsuit is speaking out what she just told

correspondent, shimon prokupecz has been following the story diligently since it happened. but he joins us now from uvalde shimon, what can you tell us about these new efforts by the families they're still there, still even two years later trying to get justice they are still trying to get justice. and most importantly, accountability for the failures that happen here behind me, we're out to school gym. two years later. >> you can see the memorial here, set up its bint, the same for almost two years now, these crosses have been out here. people today are coming to lay flowers to pay their respects to these children and two teachers who were killed here outside here at this hour, two years ago, many of the parents were dropping their kids off. it was the last day of school it was optional for many of them to even come to school. there was awards day. many of the kids just wanted to come for the last day to be with their friends and it would be the last time for many of these family members that they would

see their children alive. and as this scene unfolded that de there were parents all around here trying desperately to get inside to save their kids. as many of the officers, some almost three, close to 400 officers stood outside as the gunman was inside that classroom. and as you said, that lawsuit, they settled the one lawsuit they are now suing each of the officers individually from the state who responded that day. really just seeking accountability that has been lacking here for nearly now, two years, jim it's just incredible and shamil and you spoke with survivors of the shooting. how are they coping now? two years later yeah yeah. >> i spoke with our new full ray as he's was one of the teachers that day who somehow through a miracle survived. he was inside the classroom with the gunman. he'd been shot in his back and his arm and he was laying there in his blood as

the gunman was taunting him and two years later he talked about how different t is the difficulty. he's facing, but also interestingly enough, the gif that he has been able to give two really the world by his survival. take a listen it's always been about accountability transparency. just let us know what's going on. they've they've hit everything from us and so one of the gifts that you bring is telling us what happened that day. and if it wasn't for people like you, i don't know that we would ever get some part of the story that was it that happened inside. yeah. they probably would have told or not told anybody anything. but we survived in and i think that's the reason that i keep going. i keep going and keep on

talking because it's for them. it's for the kids and for all 21 these are the 21 that he's talking about. these are the kids. the children, and two teachers who died inside the school today. there will be a candlelight vigil. many of the family members will be gathering at the cemetery to celebrate their kids, to think that they would have to celebrate their kids in such a way. but this is what they hold onto. what they have in the cemetery. there will be other gathering thanks here, but it's going to definitely be a very tough day here in uvalde because so much of the paint not just because they're kids have died and there's been these victims. but just because of the way this community has treated them, the way state has treated them, the way law enforcement has treated them. so much healing still to do here in this community, jim? >> yeah, they they deserve much, much better other than

everything that they've gone through. what do you make of the fact that the families there are still trying to get accountability as a shimon described it, it just seems so unfair yeah. >> what happened to these families is outrageous. the president shares their outrage while they fight for accountability through the legal system. president biden and vice president harris are doing everything they can to make sure that this doesn't happen to other families we take this day not only to honor the 21 lives loss, but also to make sure that this doesn't happen to other people and to use the inspiration of those families writing for change to give us additional drive to call for additional action by congress. >> and the uvalde families are filing new lawsuits, including a federal lawsuit against the officers over that botched response to the shooting. the white house have a response to that. i mean, it just seems unbelievable that the families still don't have full accountability. they don't
7:52 am
have all the information as to what happened, why why did this botched response unfold the way it did? >> yes. so we shared the frustration of those families and want them to have accountability i'd refer any specific questions for the justice department and which i know is engaged in some of this litigation by here at the white house. >> will we are focused on is making sure that we help those families and uvalde by helping them. accomplish another thing that they're trying to accomplish, which is make sure that this doesn't happen to other families. the justice department reasonably put out a report on what happened in uvalde, which really laid out out the facts of what went wrong in that community. and we are we're now working at the white house per the direction of president biden and vice president harris to implement that report to make sure we you have a better law enforcement response to make sure that our schools are structured in a safer way and also make sure that we are better supporting communities in both the hours and months after for a mass shooting like this happen and what your office doing to try to prevent these tragedies from

continuing to happen in this country. >> now you can't stop every one of them because the nature of the nation's gun laws. but what more can you do for the families out there are wondering what's the white house do and what what can you do so one of the biggest differences between a year ago or two years ago and today is that we now have in the law the bipartisan safer communities act, which president biden signed just a month and a day after the shooting in uvalde, in part, he was able to do that because those families turned to their pain into purpose and pushed congress to act this law gives the justice department new tools to prosecute traffickers or firearms, and allows enhanced background checks for individuals under age 21 and it includes the most significant mental health investment in youth in history. >> but it doesn't do enough. that's why president biden, just seven i've been months ago, establish to the white house office of gun violence prevention. he asked us to squeeze every benefit out of that new law and also find additional action. we are working with states dr.

legislation over the finish line. we are working to implement laws on the books were being creative and finding new actions, including actions to encourage safe storage of firearms. but president biden i didn't. that's going to continue to call on congress to do what ultimately needs to be done, which is ban assault weapons all right. >> 70 feldman. thank you very much. thank you for fighting over that lawnmower noise there at the white house. i remember that quite well myself, but stephanie, thanks for your time. we appreciate it. and as we had to break, we want to remember the 19 students and two teachers killed at robb elementary school. as that community comes together today. but also the lasting morels in there. honore, just take a look at some of these beautiful murals of the children who were lost in uvalde. >> we won't forget them. say what?
