things. listen wherever you get your podcasts hello again and welcome. >> it's time to break down the big stories with some smart people. today, we're asking what hunter biden on trial just days after donald trump's conviction are there really two tiers of justice and some republicans, client? then order at the border. we'll dive into president biden's executive action and whether it's enough to stem the flow of migrants coming into the the us illegally. and attention all shopper is your friendly retail employee may be recording. you will discuss why the panel is here and ready to go. so sit back, relax, and let's talk
7:02 am
about up first, new week new trial. this one centered on president biden's son, hunter, who faces federal charges of illegally purchasing now gun while using drugs. the trial has pitting biden's against biden's, turning a personal family drama into a legal case with political ramifications hunter biden in federal court this week forced to listen to testimony about his drug addiction from three of his romantic like partners, his former wife, an ex-girlfriend, and his brother, beau's widow, whom he dated after bo died. >> the ex-girlfriend testified that she saw much or biden smoking crack every 20 minutes. hunter faces charges. he lied about his drug use while buying a gun despite the tough optics in this election year that's it. i'm biden issued a statement of support while the first lady has regularly
7:03 am
attended the trial, having the first lady united states, in the courtroom, the jury is going to notice that the trial comes among ongoing fallout from donald trump's conviction in his hush money trial. >> it's a vitamin which weaponization, but democrats say i'm joe biden san is also on trial proves no one is above the law democrats are not out there saying that hunter biden's trial is a farce. >> the response from republicans, if not for them, this trial would have never happened. >> the only reason why the department of justice is prosecuting hunter biden is because house report publications actually investigated here with me today, podcaster and author kara swisher, right-hand salam, president of the manhattan institute and national review, contributing editor, new york times journalist and podcast host lulu garcia-navarro. >> and editor in chief of the dispatch and columnist at the la times, jonah goldberg, welcome back, everyone.
7:04 am
>> qarrah. yeah. so are there to tiers of justice as republicans, client? >> no, not at all. >> i think this is a sad case. i find this whole thing just reading about it, especially with the women testifying about him. this guy is a drug fact. he's a drug addict and he's he's troubled and he's probably going to lose here. and i find it more just a sad case of families in this country the polarization is seems odd because it's just sad to me right what about the argument that the fact that hunter biden is on trial shows that the justice system despite what republicans say, is in fact, even handan. well, i think that if it were really even handed, you might have seen prosecutors address the foreign agent registration act. think back to paul manafort who has stressed campaign manager the first time around before robert mueller came around and prosecuted manafort for a fair a violation. it was actually quite rare to see them happen. and in this case, hunter biden
7:05 am
may well have violated the foreign agent registration act. that's the kind of thing that would presumably come up if you saw the same level of scrutiny, but you didn't so i think that there's reason for a lot of folks on the political right to think, well, wait a second. are people really being treated in an even handed way? lulu is under are somehow getting a sweetheart deal here. >> meticulous the fact of the matter is this is clearly a very tragic, sad case. if you have had an addict and your family the stories that have come out about his drug abuse, how it has affected the people around him. and frankly, what people have said about this, what he's actually being charged for in this case, not the other ones. the tax evasion, et cetera but this case, he had that gun for 11 days. most he is a first-time offender. the gun was not used in any criminal capacity. and in fact, many republicans are saying that this case is actually not really legitimate. so on the face of it, i do not
7:06 am
i don't think you can equate what happened to donald trump, who is a former president with what is happening to hunter biden, the son of those sitting president joanna? yeah. so look like i agree. >> he's an addict and add ics, do terrible things the law which joe biden as a senator actually made more severe forbids attics from buying guns. >> yeah. >> and maybe that shouldn't be the law their arguments about that but if you're going to turn republicans, yeah. >> i mean, that's fine. >> but my point is is like it's what the law is and frankly, i think you could actually make the argument the other way and say that if hunter biden warned hunter biden this case never would've been brought because they never bring in these cases a standalone thing. it is one of these weird things that if you are a celebrity for one of a better word, you get treated by the justice system differently and sometimes more harshly to send a message i don't think the trump trial should trump case should have been brought i think you can make an argument that this case shouldn't been
7:07 am
brought but at the same time, the two tiers thing actually works the other way. donald trump had a better time as a defendant than a normal person would. and so as hunter biden i can't imagine a more divisive experience for the biden family as you've all alluded to, hunter's ex-wife and beau's widow called to testify for the prosecution while hunter, his daughter testified for the defense, still no word whether hunter will take the stand. >> qarrah should hunter have spared his family? they all of this taken a plea deal according to legal experts, he most likely would have gotten probation the worst he would have gotten is a few months in jail and he would have spared his family all of this? yes, he should have done a lot of things differently every step of the story is for the people that people have suffered are all these specialty women including joe biden i think the idea is that you shouldn't be there. >> she raised him like this is a family tragedy is what it is, and a hunter biden is made bad decisions the entire way and you can't just write it off
7:08 am
only to drug addiction, but it's clearly was fueling this whole thing. he's a junkie and he is taking it out on his family. and that's what's happened. he just taking it out. >> she is taking out. i don't want to pick up tap on that with your right hand because it seems to me that the arguments against taking us to trial, given who he knew was going to be called, are so strong do you think that hunter is counting on a delaware jury to bail out a biden. >> i think that is not an unreasonable supposition. i think that could be the gamble that he's taking. this is clearly someone with a very high appetite for risk. but i've also got to say, i really think that if he were tried for far for violations, he would be at way more risks. this guy could have gone to jail for that now, but i think he locked out so that he could still be the whole reason that we're getting those trial is because the prosecutor said you're not getting a get out of jail free card. >> that's when i'll say one tier of justice. absolutely.
7:09 am
you can market it down. >> okay. we will mark back down but i want to get back to this question of whether or not he is counting on hometown verdict because it raises the question about the bidens embrace of hotter. the president was out in public with his son just before the trial started, the first lady has been in the courtroom almost every day. and biden issued this statement. i am the president, but i am also a dad joel and i love our son and we are so proud of the man he is today. >> qarrah. >> i understand this is a family affair, but are the bidens trying to tip the scale? or families do this in these trials are trying to present this person that way he is the president. i think he's appropriately saying he's on trial. he saying i support if he didn't say it, they would attack them for being a terrible thought. and also, by the way, he has said he was asked directly and he has said he wouldn't pardon his son if he gets convicted. let's see what happens if he loses. yeah. but i mean, but he said it he said he would have bought what
7:10 am
was he going to say? he has to say, well, i don't know take your life to paris now president biden and french president emmanuel macron are speaking. >> let's listen she had to mediums dea joe ladies and gentlemen ambassadors ladies and gentlemen miss a president you are honoring us with a state visit to france after your presence and that of dr. jill biden after the 80th anniversary of d-day in normandy know and i believe if false is your veterans are veterans and those able the allies were honored by your presence, decision and that of other leaders on 6 june i'm bad the warm welcome was everyone
7:11 am
enjoyed by they were there. >> but this says a lot about the strength than of our alliance and what binds france and the united states he didn't have america. >> this is a unity of blood to address the great challenges of the day, but it is this doneness blue line anymore that is the connection between our two flags are two nations. so once again, thank you for your presence together with president we discuss the great issues that we're facing the first of which being ukraine today in ukraine, goblin, men and women fighting with remarkable courage determined, not to give in the face as you put the russian aggression, the injustice and justifiable aggression. jointly, you responded to in your own lives extended support to this
7:12 am
european nations, just fighting for survival in its three of them and will continue to this as intensity in as long this is necessary, and i would like to thank you. it's for the commitment of the united states of america and the recent decisions you recently confirmed whereby you came to our sides and played a critical role in this conflict. this conflict is all about security and stability so now i've old europe problems. >> that means many thanks again, i think we see eye to eye on this war raging in ukraine. >> and we took a joint decisions on different authorizing ukraine to via back strike eight aggressor when defending its territory. >> of course, taking great efforts to train equip that ukraine, an army and we made remarkable decisions. >> i mentioned the above. but the details of the war, as i said raging out there, doing
7:13 am
the g7 we hope both of hope that all members of the g7 again, will agree, 250 billion solidarity fund a ukrainian and the peace conference in switzerland. you will be represented there. this will be critical stages well, and of course, the native summit in washington, dc as regards the ukrainian issue. and as i said, we do see eye eye-to-eye respect for international law. >> the purpose is supposed amendment the freedom of people's two determine their own future, to self-determinati on and thank you for being at your upside. this close cooperation between france and the united states. >> well yet consents, other crises as well. >> there should be no jewel standards and although there are many crises around the world, we're still applying the sale the same principles with a self-same determination in gaza
7:14 am
we want to obtain the immediate yes liberation of hostages and we can only welcome foreign armies deliberation of 400 by the israeli army. we want to achieve an immediate ceasefire and open up the prospect of a political solution, which is the only one that can bring it back about lasting peace and meet the security concerns that both people and that is why we are supporting de comprehensive proposal with the united states of america just after nine months have conflict the situation rafah human consequences are unacceptable. it is not acceptable that israel should not open all checkpoint when someone to human humanitarian aid as requested by the international community for months operations, israeli operations should stop there in the united, the united nations security council has a role to

play, but of course jointly who will double down too? avoid a regional escalation, on it for the in particular, in lebanon, where we are working on de-escalation on the blue line and on the institutional aspect in both countries are working with those end indeed, old stakeholders, it's under your hall to make sure that all parties come back to their census regarding around we know the same thing. there's all out escalation unprecedented attacks against israel. >> this deputies operations of regional destabilization. >> and of course, the rainy nuclear program, both are contraints are determined to bring pressure to bear to counter this trend. and this was demonstrated recently enough a few days ago, another thought, something you want to try drawing k adopting a resolution at the international atomic energy agency myself, same detriment determination is there. we do not wish to apply
7:16 am
double standards and that is why we coordinate our efforts in africa, crisis in the sudan, in the east of the donald somnolent, the original democratic republic of congo and you live by the men throughout the region and over and beyond this two countries with a mean sense of leadership will address the challenges of our time, especially those that when you pick a new hunan the more touching the most vulnerable countries. so we do wish to achieve a farah international order. that is the meaning of the paris backed for the people independent, but also initiatives for a more efficient, tax system. >> we are stepping off the exit from the coal from coal energy. >> they will be the conference on the ocean and indeed, we are mobilizing efforts on global health. and indeed, we will both involved in organizing the
7:17 am
gavi conference here in paris that is also what lies behind this proposition of the new olympic, olympic truce, which was proposed by the un just a few days ago, that he got on the economic front we are both concerned about china's unfair trade practices which bring about overcapacity. this is of such importance for the globally economy that we have to act in the ordinate it fashion my visit in december 20 to explain the consequences of the inflation reduction act on the european economy, we discussed this, again, that piece of legislation is useful because it makes it possible. indeed, it steps up the decarbonization of the american economy. and therefore, the implementation of the paris agreement. but of course, we want to reset as it were. both our economies that is the european economy and the debt of the united states of america in terms of regulation
7:18 am
investment and on such issues as clean tech, artificial intelligence is an indeed agrifood issues. but of course we want to work on a bilateral level for the better cooperation is not american students, american scientists, make american entrepreneurs are more than welcome in this country. we wish that would be more of a then we also have cooperation based since the state visit of december 2022 around the civilian nuclear industry in the space industry, we want to go further. indeed, a number of agreements were signed between cnes announcer on earth observation or indeed the the artemis program. and we'll also proud to announce that the first high-speed american high-speed train built by as tom will be commissioned in the united states, but by year's end and that is also a sign of increased cooperation between our railroad

industries. and this is assigned for economic cooperation, but also a step towards the energy transition resorting to france's technological excellence. i would also like to signal the importance of the neck and investors in france, there was the choose france summit in france france will start a new foundation in worth 100 million euros to promote university exchanges and exchange programs of research between two countries. i would like to thank companies that joint this. in particular, cma cgm was very much involved this new initiative comes after the success of the villa albertine projects where several cities in your country received as many as 180 creators and intellectuals in a matter of two years in about 50 set is out can speak longer, but i would like to say that's regarding the wars around the world also inflicting pain around the world on big
7:20 am
international issues and now the bilateral front, together with president biden, we want to have a joint roadmap we need to trust in the future, trust in progress, trust in innovation the head is on the determination to create jobs, not just in the us, but in europe as well let the capital we won't be there when the economy is properly decarbonized, but we want to build these. we mustn't be naive. we've must be other side of those who resist if you must not be naive. in other words, we need to find the mounting solutions but i would like to thank you, mr. president, to be the present, not just of the first of the greatest world power, but you being clear and loyal a partner who respects europeans who wants to build on these agreements from the ukraine to the middle east through wet with picking up today on the economic front.
7:21 am
>> thank you. >> that's thank you for being with us today and thank you for honoring paris normally. >> and france during this celebrations with your state visit. thank you mr. president. >> thank you. it's spent a great honor to be here normandy, france, but it was a moving experience for student a french history to the shell soilless at today, i was a movie the experience for us the whole delegation france was our first friend remains are one of our best friends this week we're affirm that friendship in a deeply meaningful way. but before i begin my remarks, i want to echo president macron comments, welcoming and safe rescue of four hostages that
7:22 am
were returned to their families. it is he won't stop working until all the hostages come home and a ceasefire is reached. that is essential to happen you know, together remarked at a's and anniversary of the allied operation that saved you european incredible heroes who carried it out. i found it 180 brave man happened to be more men at the time, i came back to normandy this week with such pride and sense of devotion i don't think anyone who got to meet them shake their hands or hear their stories will ever forget their stories where the look in their eyes and the pride they took with what they did but you could also see the remembering the loss comrades at the same time you know, the fact is that i know i won't forget it i want to thank president macron. ms macron, for the people of france for making our heroes feels so welcome. because they did feel welcome. you could feel it, you
7:23 am
could see and we'll never forget. >> will never forget what they did. and this week we have showed the world once again the power of allies what we can achieve when we stand together that's what this relationship between france, the united states exemplifies you know, we see the crane for our two countries are standing with ukrainian people as they fight off. putin was brutal aggression yesterday announced $225 million in new security assistance to ukraine. and it's the six packets provided since we signed the national security legislation earlier this year i wish we could have done it when we wanted to six months earlier, but we got it done with 61 billion in additional aid to ukraine. and i command france and our european allies for their leadership as well. eu is proved that provided over 107 billion, $107 billion in assistance ukraine since the war began because we know what
7:24 am
happens if putin succeeds in subjugating ukraine. and it won't. we won't start you know, put my stop at ukraine it's not just ukraine's about much more than ukraine all of europe will be threatened we're not going to let that happen. the united states is standing strong with ukraine were standing with our allies, and we're standing with france. we will not, we will not say it again, walk away around the world. france, the united states are working together strands, tickets, transit, security, and shared prosperity in indo-pacific, we stand together for freedom of navigation transparent governments as well as faire economic practices. in the middle east. north africa, we work together and issues critical the peace and stability like food security and counterterrorism the next natural threat of climate change, which is just growing greater, were working together to accelerate the global transition to net zero it is
7:25 am
the existential threat to humanity among the only existential threat to humanity, including nuclear weapons, is if we do nothing, i, climate change, i could go on every de, the french people in the america, people are connected in countless ways or economic ties collaboration and science and technology educational exchanges. >> reason we don't have more americans coming. were afraid they won't come home. such a beautiful high mated this as credible country. it's a beautiful country and, you know the fact is that these cherished ties between our families and friends continues to grow the bonds between our nation are strong vast, and rooted most important element, shared value that's true today as it banned from the very start in a few weeks, united states will celebrate 4 july. our de have independence that would not have been possible. it's not hyperbole would not
7:26 am
have been possible were not for france coming to our aid, where we're a nation because of france in large part, who stepped up when we needed help. and you did it. that's fourth of july is about that feet would not have been possible again, without your support without french support today i proudly stand with france and support freedom and democracy around the world. that's what this spectacular week is all about mr. president. there's much more we had to chance to talk about. we're going to continue to talk you become a good friend and i really appreciate your you're cooperation and your insights. thank you. thank you. thank you yes, he will. >> cool. thank you. prisons all right. we just heard statements. they are from the president's of the us and france offering both mutually warm statements to each other, especially regarding their bond between the two countries. that's begun. cnn's nic robertson and cnn's kayla
7:27 am
tausche. kayla, let's begin with you. obviously they touched on ukraine but they. mention the four. israeli hostages who were rescued today. what stood out to you in these comments well, it was certainly notable that these statements were relatively brief. >> they were not extremely lengthy, they were not 20 minutes a piece going into great detail about the deliverables and the cooperation between the countries they kept it at a very high level and they largely laid out policy positions that we knew that both countries and both leaders already had president macron saying that while they are very grateful to hear of the release or the rescue of the four hostages that happened in the last few hours that they want all of the hostages to come home and that they will stop at nothing. macron also suggested support for a political solution, for a permit for permanent peace, lasting peace in his words in the middle
7:28 am
east, that certainly is firmer language than he had said before, where he appeared to be departing from the us's pursuit of that negotiated process. but certainly i think it's safe to say that there would have been a little bit more that resulted from this if the press were allowed to ask questions, but the biden administration said that that was negotiated between the two governments, the two countries reasons. so that's what we have today. >> yeah, nika statements of agreement and appreciation and affection that likely is the intended take away from these two liters. what was your tap takeaway? >> oh, absolutely. both leaders justifying the relationships with each other for obvious reason because there's a possibility that if donald trump comes into the united states relations with europe comes into presidency than a disease. then relations with europe, relations with france could be diminished. and that's a concern of them both. so that you have on the one hand your hand the president of france macron thanking president biden for his support
7:29 am
for his support of europe, for working together. he kept talking about how how decisions were made in commonality, whether it was in ukraine in an other areas. and you have president biden pointing out that europe the european union, has contributed $107 billion towards a supportive ukraine de, are paying their way. that was donald trump's message. europe is not paying its way. this was really, i think it was trying to make president biden's solubility of the importance of ties with europe, easier and better back home. >> nic robertson, kayla tausche. thank you. we'll send you back now to the chris wallace show. >> lead being targeted or is she being cobbled? >> well, that neither that's life in the big city if you're in the bigs, this is the way it goes. i think this chiefs should expect it and she herself handle it. well, she's like it's a physical game that's correct. and actually, i hate to say that probably the ratings dropped because it's more interesting, it's
7:30 am
something that things are going on. there's real play there. so i'm i'm fine with it. she's fine with it. i think right-hand. >> the wnba is physical and celebrated rookies almost always have a hard time when i came in, there's a kind of welcome to the league hazing, but all those foss that we've seen over the last week, is she being targeted by other players or is she being coddled by the media? >> look, this is a huge, huge deal for the wnba. it's a huge triumph. it makes perfect sense for the league. two want to protect this incredible asset that they have right now so i wouldn't say that she's being coddled. i'd say that folks understand the stakes that are involved right now with having a star of this magnitude. and i think that it would be wise to let folks know, look, you might be upset, you might be disappointed not to be hitting the same kind of attention, but we've got to think about what this means longer-term for the sport and for women in the sport which brings us to the
7:31 am
reason that a lot of people think that this incident has struck such a chord, which is the issue of race here is legendary sportscaster bob costas talking about another dirty play recently involving two different players there was an incident recently, alyssa thomas, who happens to be african-american, grabbed the angel reese by the throat and through her to the floor flagrant to ejected from the game. >> the reason why that doesn't spark as much conversation isn't just that caitlin clark is a bigger star than alyssa thomas it's because it's a black on black incident jonah, honestly, how big an issue is race in this whole controversy that this was a black player who knocked down a white star. yeah, i think it's unavoidable, but in part because race is figures into so much of our motivation but it reasoning when it comes to their, like the rorschach text of society,
7:32 am
people bring race to conversations in this lends itself to it. michael will ban on, on on espn was making the case that part of the issue is there are no superstar white players in the nba. and this is very much, and this is the first one in the wnba, and this is sort of like larry bird and magic johnson. it, it brings people to the game and it brings these arguments to the game too. and basketball has in sports is always attracted these arguments about race and it's sort of unavoidable i don't know how to adjudicate it. i don't know what's in the people in the fowler's heart or any of that kind of know white american superstars and that is something that has got a liability for the nba. >> lulu, why do you think that this is struck such a nerve? and how much of it is do you think because of rice, if this had been as, as costa said, black on black okay. would it have been the same deal? >> i think caitlin clark is such a superstar. she has brought so much visibility to the game that i think that this discussion is just, you know, it's a new league. i mean,
7:33 am
it's not a new league. it's the visibility is new for the league. and i think all these debates are happening because all of a sudden you're seeing the game elevated star. and that's, and that's what i think it's about. i didn't know that i buy the cheese. wine makes she's okay messes. >> i think she's famous and i think and also by the way, in any sport, the most famous person gets all the attention. they get, all the people trying to hurt them. it is this isn't i think any different than then there is the role that sports media has played in stoke it as fire. here is the always controversial pat mcafee on espn i would like the media people that continue to say this rookie class, this rookie class, this rookie class, not just call it for what it is. >> there's one white for the indiana team. who is a superstar? >> yeah, kara is the media, the swartz media losing its mind.
7:34 am
>> i a fat macrophage for sure that's his brand. i think he likes to say controversial things, so, you i she also was incredibly cordial here. she she said he's he apologize. she said it's okay. she's famous. and if you watch replay on, i did recently she's electric to watch. are those and i'm not as big any gun. i'm sport's ball fan. >> but did she changes the tenor of the game when qizan the court so she's going to attract all the attention. >> you didn't invite beta. again, i'm going would you like to come i'm going absolutely. >> seriously yeah. okay. all right. great. mid july, you and i are going well, i hope it's not during the republican convention what about the media just doing what they do? >> well, it sort of gets my point about race. it's like people are looking stars attract the desire to talk about them, right? and then people who are obsessed about race look for reasons to talk about race and you put these things together with the superstar it doesn't shock me that the media is kinda losing
7:35 am
