the number. one most loved, thanking cnn this morning with kasie hunt next it's tuesday, june 18, right now on cnn this morning, a sweeping new immigration policy from president biden that will protect hundreds of thousands of undocumented immigrants from deportation plus gop infighting in virginia today as house freedom caucus chairman bob good tries to prevail over his trump bad honig and vladimir putin visiting north korea for the first time in over two decades, raising concerns about their deepening ties i've. >> 5:00 a.m. here washington, but here's a live look at the statue of liberty. >> good morning, everyone. >> manu raju in for kasie hunt. today, president biden is expected to use his executive power to reshape us immigration
2:02 am
policy. cnn has learned biden will announce a sweeping executive action that would shield some undocumented spouses of us but citizens from deportation, allowing them to work legally in the country as they seek citizenship. now the policy would apply to people who have been living in the united states for ten years and would utilize an existing legal authority known as quote parole in place. altogether, the moves could affect hundreds of thousands of people. and this would be the federal government's biggest relief program for immigration since the obama era deferred action for childhood arrivals program, or known as daca. but perhaps not so coincidentally, obama announced darker in mid june of 2012, less than five months before his reelection as president and this is the second executive action biden will make on immigration just in the last couple of weeks. earlier this month, he made the decision to deny a silent and most of migrants entering the us illegally and offered a preview of what we're likely
2:03 am
to see today. >> i believe the immigration has always been on lifeboat of america. we're constantly renewed by an infusion of people. and new talent statue of liberty is not some relic of american history stands for who we are as united states. the weeks ahead. and i mean, the weekend, i'll speak to how we can make our immigration system more fair and more just all right. >> i'm joined by is seen as great political analysts jackie gooseneck on this tuesday morning. good morning very early in morning. hi, early she'll just just to spell out exactly. well, it's in this executive orders, so this would shield spouses of citizen us. this is from deportation, allow them to work legally in the as days it would apply to people living in the united states for ten plus years. and this is an existing legal authority known as proline place. a good effect in their sum estimates and several hundred thousand, maybe 409,000 people. the politics though. yeah so interesting, how do you see he's really
2:04 am
trying the president here is really trying to strike a balance. >> there were a lot of folks on the left two were very upset about the changes to the asylum process that he made just a few weeks ago. and this sort of kicks it back in the other direction by, by creating a program that would allow sort of like daqqa, which had been a young people who had been brought into the country without through any fault of their own, who were allowed to stay in the country under the obama administration. so this kind of creates that pathway for legal residencies for those who meet those very specific criteria. now, it's already being attacked on the right as an amnesty, as all sorts of things hello. heard always be a type for amnesty, right? so that's probably why he's saying, let's just do this because i want to be attacked right? anyway exactly. and this is an issue that we're seeing people in swing states really weigh in on on both sides of the coin. but particularly you would imagine this would appeal to voters in places like arizona, places like nevada, places like georgia. so we'll have to see how this ends up shaking out in terms of the finer details. but certainly a
2:05 am
move by biden to really put things on the other side of the ledger after all of the criticism he received from the asylum? yeah. it's interesting. you just basically make no one happy oh, no. >> it's not an immigration is such a complicated issue. >> ones white collar what's has not been able to deal with this? well, exactly. and this is biden has been criticizing congress for not being able to pass anything, particularly that immigration bill that you covered that that really went further than a lot of democratic presidents would have. absolutely. it's interesting you look at just the numbers. this is break down a little bit about first. is how do biden support? what does trump supporters look at the idea of whether undocumented people who are undocumented be allowed to stay in the country if certain circumstances are met. biden supporters versus trump's supporters, 85% of biden supporters compared to 32% of trump supporters. that isn't calling to pew survey that was from april, but it did come out recently the way that is such a significant difference. and then you look at the about deporting all
2:06 am
migrants, which is pretty much undocumented immigrants, which is pretty much trump's policies. they're going to have a roundup. there's deportation system favor 62% 38% oppose this idea. generally deporting all undocument immigrants going to cbs news poll. the politics are just so divided, particularly on the left on the right, the question of course, is how to independent voters do and that is the question what biden needs? >> is this a very similar coalition to get them across the finish line because we know this, this is gonna be an election and said this over and over again. it's going to be decided on the merchant in the hispanic voters would be a key are key part of the coalition as well. you look at how biden has been did and with hispanic voters in 2020 vs now, there is some slippage. if you believe the public polling here is 65% supported biden back in 2020 compared to 32 for trump, that his dropped in that is not
2:07 am
consistent. but what we are seeing in other public polling, 52, 47, according to a recent quinnipiac pole, is this the type of action though that obviously you can't, it's hard. you can't campaign. hispanic voters are a problem. well, definitely vote on a lot of different issues. but how do you think this works and is placed like nevada and arizona where there are significant number of hispanic voters who will be critical for biden here. >> i think we'll have to wait and see honestly on which is the absolute worst answer. but it, but it's true because you're absolutely right as manic voters are like a lot of others, they vote on a lot of different things that things like the economy, if things like replace that as economy's not doing so well, exactly. and so we're going to have to wait and see, but certainly something like this when it comes to rhetoric tends to appeal more than maybe some of the things you hear coming from the trump campaign, both previously and now. yeah. >> and speaking of trump, i we will see he'll be speaking in racine, wisconsin. yes, i have today just outside of
2:08 am
milwaukee, of course, the most horrible city well, yeah, it depends. >> hands on who you listen about last week, as you may remember, trump was on capitol hill. >> he was talking to house republicans. he used the word horribles city. >> and when referring to milwaukee, of course, the state city where they're having the republican convention i also a pivotal swing state that could determine the next president. now since then, there's been once a word linked data use those words republicans have been trying to make clear, oh, he was not referring to the city. he was referring to the crime rates and there's trump himself put it when he was asked about him we're making these remarks i think it was very clear what i meant. >> i said we're very concerned with crime. i love milwaukee. i have great friends and will lucky. i was referring to also the election so does that how does that obviously the biden team is jumping all over those. >> i'm glad we settled on what
2:09 am
he was talking about because immediately after that, there are lots of different explanations he was talking about the back-and-forth with the city. it was talking about the crime which is actually down. and he was talking about a whole realm of things. anyway, i don't know that this is good. the biden campaign is definitely taking advantage of this. there's merch, there's all sorts of things will this impact the margins? wisconsin? i don't think so, but it's certainly this is the purple list. of purple states. it's right down the middle. >> i don't have to tell you that. yeah maybe everything does matter. erasing is outside of the city is not in milwaukee, then trump has to win. the suburbs. and mena docker do as well the walkie and some people in the suburbs may not view milwaukee all their favorite point that's true. >> i do think though. i mean, who knows, maybe there's someone like a paul ryan who recently came out and said he's not voting for trump, son of james ville so if you have a way yeah, but if you have voters, like someone who was
2:10 am
born and raised in wisconsin, like a paul ryan who is looking at what trump's doing. it doesn't like what see you know, perhaps saying that the city next door isn't great. >> who does? yes. all right. we'll see how long that story line last or if trump addresses it later today. jack, do you sentence thanks for that up next in anti west alignment deepens random a potent makes a rare visit to north korea plus senator chuck schumer trying to revive eight trump era ban. it fast-moving wildfires, scorching the west the most anticipated moment of this election, and the stakes couldn't be higher. >> the president and the former president on 1-stage moderated by jake tapper and dana bash, the cnn presidential debate thursday, june 27, nine live on cnn and streaming unmatched. >> every night at the same pain after dinner, you start soaking grabbing framing is stove top. night. >> well, now you can wake up to a clean dream kitchen every day was stole guard the slide on

2:36 am
to try to show republicans blocking this effort. >> yeah, it's what we've seen for the past few weeks. chuck schumer has sort of taken a ton of floor time and reproductive rights on the border and put all these packages in front of republicans making them vote against it. and the reality is that chuck schumer has a lot of vulnerable incumbents. he's got john and tester. he's got shared brown, jacky rosen and nevada, that he needs to protect and the cards are stacked against them in terms of sort of protecting the senate and taking back the majority. but including this bump-stock vote that we'll see today, that will be blocked the last few weeks have been filled with chuck schumer sort of putting political votes in front of republicans and then making them vote against them and allowing his many incumbent democrats are in tough races they use that to point against. >> we've got running a campaign, run their campaign ads, and i'm sure we'll see more of that messaging in the zedek that's what happens in an election years. >> steven newcomb, thanks for coming in and sharing your expertise yeah. >> all right. russian president vladimir putin on his way to

pee on young ahead of a meeting with north korean leader kim jong, own, it's the latest sign of deepening ties between the two dictators. dictators, and raising widespread but international concern. the closely watched visit is expected to further cement a burgeoning partnership founded on their shared animosity toward the west in driven by putin's need for support in his war with ukraine. now white house national security adviser, john kirby, expressing his concerns yesterday what we are concerned about trevor is the deepening relationship between these two countries not just because of the impacts is going to have on the ukrainian people, because we know north korean ballistic missiles are still being used to hit ukrainian targets. but because there could be some reciprocity here that could affect security on the korean peninsula hi joining me to discuss cnn contributor and former moscow bureau chief jill doherty. >> joe, thanks for being with me this morning. so just how big of a deal is this meeting
2:38 am
between putin and kim i, think it's really big. i mean, vladimir putin right now is involved in this war against ukraine. and one of the main sources for ballistic missiles. and also for ammunition is north korea and there are a lot of payoffs we can talk about that, but, but that's one. and then almost the bigger concern is what does north korea get out of this? and that could be really high-tech from russia, that could be used in a variety of ways. military pores for north korea. so it's a very big deal and what implications do you think there are for the war in ukraine and whether kim and north korea will what did support. >> but as military support behind what pudding is trying to do and ukraine well, i mean, if you look at the military situation immediately north korea has been producing these.
2:39 am
>> let's call it first ammunition. and they've supplied according to the south korean 5 million rounds of ammunition in addition to ballistic missiles. so north korea is happy to continue to provide that forever. and so russia obviously needs it and that is the match. that we have. but also, i think if you look at ukraine, because ukraine is not just ukraine, the war is much bigger and the implications are much bigger. so this allows russia to create problems for the united states because again, north korea already is trying to launch missiles. it has a nuclear program probably 50 warheads, 500 at this point. so it creates another big distraction for the united states. and that's exactly what vladimir putin wants to do. >> i do want you to weigh in about, obviously we're in the middle of a campaign season and
2:40 am
how these two candidates talk about these leaders. listen to joe biden i've known for over 40 years. he's concerned me for 40 years. he's not a decent man. dictator and he's struggling to make sure he holds his country together while still keeping this assault going and now, donald trump what's your relationship like with vladimir putin seems to think very good, but i was tough with them, but i had a very good relationship that's a good thing, not a bad thing. >> and i'm trying to tell people would know it's a good thing. i tell the press all the time. no, the fact that i get along with kim jong-un, north korea, that's crazy president. she's crazy. it's all good stuff getting along. i got along with the tough ones, much better than i get along with the week one. >> what is your takeaway from the way these two candidates to talk about these laters well, i mean, trump is easy to talk
2:41 am
about. >> obviously, trump thinks in terms of personal relationships, if he has a good relationship with kim jong on, then things can happen. of course, that didn't work under the trump admin it's variation because that overture kind of fell apart and kim went back and was very angry at the united states and especially it's at the trump administration. but i think that's the problem because these leaders china, north korea, russia, are not basing their foreign policy on how nice a us president is, or how they get along. they are in really transactional terms, even the relationship between north korea and russia is transactional. they both need each other so i think the main, the you have to look at what concretely is happening and right now, the thing that should worry and does worry the united states is looking at those satellite pictures of
2:42 am
ballistic missiles and ammunition being shipped from north korea excuse me, to russia for the war against ukraine and those are the facts. it's not just some fancy full relationship yeah. >> and we'll be watching this today, meaning very, very closely as you well as well. joe doherty. thank you for your expertise as always, really appreciate it and up next, biden or trump, who do you think will be better do a better job with the economy? plus they're all there. the garden 18 the celtics finishing off the mask for the record 18th nba championship or breach report is next celebrate juneteenth with special performances by john legend, eddie lewbel, smokey robinson. >> we still have a lot of work

lower costs for food and rent now my next guest has some suggestions for the biden kanban joining me now, former georgia lieutenant governor and cnn political commentator geoff duncan, jeff, thank you for joining me this morning. hi, you write in a new are bad for the atlantic journal constitution quote, with the first debate looming next week and the election only four months away the hours getting late for both candidates. >> this election will be won or lost by the voters in the middle, even into physical saturday, will go a long way with the high concentration of conservative because who know they don't like trump, but they need something to get onboard with biden. so tell us a little bit more about the concerns that you have regarding how the biden campaign is dealing with the academy? >> well the economy is a tale of two stories right now. some millions of americans are going to wake up here shortly in their house is going to be worth more than it's ever been there for one k is gonna be higher than it's ever ban their jobs and never be more secure than it is today. others are
2:49 am
walking into an economy trying to just afford their first house or rent payment, or groceries and so it really is a tale of two stories and i think this group of people with a high concentration of conservatives that can't stand trump, find themselves in the middle, but need a reason to vote for joe biden. i think this should be a layup for the biden campaign. and just saying, look, we need to splash some fiscal sanity. end of this, we have a spending problem in this country. and the last two presidents are guilty as charged. they both have spent nearly $8 trillion a piece on money that we don't have growing the debt. and a lot of that, a lot of that money came on the backs are under the guise of helping us through covid, which i think looking back now, we didn't need a lot of those programs in place. it just put synthetic cash into the markets that have created this inflationary issue so you of course are a republican who is voting for joe biden. >> you've announced that i'm wondering, do you think though that the biden campaign and the president himself and they've done enough to reach out and target republicans like yourself well, certainly never
2:50 am
enough work done in a close race like this. >> this is going to come down to the wire and for me, i'm so committed to creating a gop to 0.0 of a republican party that does not include donald trump. and so myself and others are willing to step up and kinda play this bank shot of supporting a democrat, joe biden, who i disagree with on a tremendous amount of policies, but i view him as a decent person and looking at somebody i can probably try to work with over the next four years while we rebuild this party and so watching the biden campaign tried to figure out ways to attract folks that are in the middle that will ultimately decide this race i don't know there's some confusion of terms here to right? like nobody in the world up until the fact that i told donald trump that he was lying about the election, would anybody has ever said i was in the middle? i was a strong conservative with a strong voting record in the state legislature. and as republican lieutenant but this whole litmus test of what you're only a conservative if you fall hook line and sink are
2:51 am
for donald trump's rhetoric and lies and to me, that's the chaos and confusion that he spread inside the republican party. and we will never heal until we get rid of them. and that's why i've decided to support joe biden because i want to purge donald trump as fast as i possibly can from our veins inside the republican party. >> and you mentioned that you disagree with biden at some policy today. biden is actually expected to announce a new immigration policy that would protect some undocumented spouses from being deported could affect hundreds of thousands of people. do think this is a good idea and would that when over some of those middle of the road republican leaning voters? >> i think the border is a complete disaster, right? we've seen that from a campaign perspective, it's, it's, it's hard for joe biden to get any wins on the border donald trump's rhetoric was much stronger than joe biden rhetoric on the border. and it scared off the entire southern border. everybody to our south from even thinking about coming north. and now the rhetoric has gotten lot lighter. so yes
2:52 am
incremental chess moves certainly will help to attract certain small pockets of voters. but i do think joe biden has got to give republicans like myself some small victories, be able to let us see the fact that there is some multiple policies around the border, around inflation, around spending. these are issues that we wake up every day and we care about. and so i think the more that they can do to reach out through policy, i do think it will help mend those fences, but at the end of the day, i think adam kinzinger said this the other de in ten years, i don't know if there's going to be the republican that we'll want to publicly admit. they voted for donald trump. >> he's just the only thing worse than him being are nominee as him being our president. >> because i can only imagine the train wreck and policies and the and the vendetta toward that. it'll take both domestically and internationally that's really what's put us in this difficult spot as republicans all right? >> geoff duncan, thank you for sharing your point of view. appreciate your time. >> thanks fine. >> now for that at time in franchise history, the boston celtics are nba champions
