2:01 am
this morning with kasie hunt next it's wednesday, june id. >> right now on cnn this morning the he didn't primary in virginia's house strip district five i've too early to call this morning, but that did not stop one candidate from declaring victory. >> plus more evacuations this morning in new mexico is a wildfire burns out control. and this may not my baby, erin, doesn't even move it's going the. legendary willie mays passing away at the age of 93, how baseball is remembering this, say, hey kid 5:00 a.m. here and washington and here there's a live look at capitol
2:02 am
hill. good morning, everyone. >> i'm on a rod you in for kasie hunt. it is so great to be with you this morning. and the fierce republican primary battle in virginia's fifth congressional district is spilling into another day, polls closed last night in the race between congressman bob good and trump-endorsed challenger john maguire with credibly tight margin and votes still being counted. the race is too early to call but that did not stop one candidate from declaring victory ladies and gentlemen and the people have spoken it is an honor to be your republican nominee for the congressional i would the margin of less than 400 votes. >> good. isn't giving up hope posting this to social media, quote, the entire dc swamp was aligned against us with over 10 million dollars in attack gas. but with your help, we were able to make this race too close to call. so if the margin
2:03 am
is stays this narrow, a second place finisher could call for a recount, joining me now is julia manchester, who is the national political reporter for the hill newspaper. so nice for you to be here that early this morning. welcome so this is a house race, so people may say, okay, this is relegated to one district in rural virginia. why, what is the significance here? >> it's really but it's a bigger, larger battle. >> within the gop about tactics and about ideology and revenge politics two, for the former president, absolutely prevent politics for the former president and former speaker kevin mccarthy, the knives are certainly out for bob good in this district amino going into this election night, i think a lot of us were predicting a blow out for john maguire. a lot of the internal polling showed maguire up ten points or so over bob. good, but it's in fact too close to call. so i think regardless of who wins because it's so close, bob
2:04 am
good in a way it outperform expectations. and if you're donald trump or kevin mccarthy, maybe you're not feeling as good pun intended think about those early morning, but just to remind viewers about what bob good has, why he's generated so much anger and criticism within his own party. he's leader of the house freedom caucus, which is one of the hard groups in the house gop. they have gone after their leadership. in fact, good was one of eight republicans to vote to oust kevin mccarthy and lead to this unprecedented situation that we saw last fall. that was one area which has gender and genital lot of criticism from his own conference and his own party. but he also endorsed ron desantis in the republican primary presidential primary. and then something donald trump has not forgotten either. they've, the fact that he endorsed ron desantis, but you make a good point because there was this is the most it's expensive house primary in the
2:05 am
country right now in good. despite down from saying he stabbed me in the bag, is stemming back repeatedly, going after him good. is very close. we'll see if there's a recount will see if something changes, maybe it won't but it shows you the power of incumbency at the end of the day as well? >> we know that bob good was continuing to tie himself to trump despite very much getting pushback from trump. he was with the exam. endorsing exactly trump, even setting his campaign a cease and desist letter. and we saw that the good campaign continued to tie him self to trump. but look, i mean, this entire district, it's fascinating because this was the first time bob good technically had an official primary. he had one and conventions and virginia before this and the district had been slightly redrawn. redrawn in a way that may be including more of the richmond suburbs, maybe that could have benefited john maguire, but it turns out, i mean, i'm thinking looking at
2:06 am
turnout, maybe the republicans bob good's certainly drew up the margins in rural parts of the district, which certainly helped him. >> i want to turn to talking about immigration because obviously yesterday, the president taking a big move is dominating the headlines today, even here, the lead story in the new york times this morning biden him initiative of immigration seals 500,000. so that's us people who are married, spouses undocumented. it is could legalize people in this situation. we'll see mega challenged in court, but is an interesting decision. just some reaction from some members of congress in the aftermath of this move i think this action balances that out. >> it says that border protection is important, but that the spouses of us citizens and their children that have been here for over ten years also deserve to work so i think all these are both him trying
2:07 am
to have his cake and eat it too. >> and the one sense saying he's going to shut the border down number another, since reassurance progressive that he's still going to be sensitive to letting people in so did two things here, because one, he put out that executive order from earlier in the month to turn away migrants at the border here though, doing selling that the p is folks on the left, right, this is exactly an example of what biden has been dealing with when it comes to progressives. >> i mean, we've seen him polling not so well on the border and including in many very critical swing states on this issue. so we saw last week he come out with that executive action a lot of republicans sort of just brush it aside, calling it political rhetoric, et cetera. however, it is a way for biden to say, look, this is what i did on the border, but at the same time, you had progressives on capitol hill pushing back against this and we know that biden's already in hot water with progressive it's particularly on the israel-gaza war and some other issues. so he had to find this
2:08 am
balancing act. and right now i think it's just impossible for him on this issue are quite frankly many others. please everyone. >> speaking of balancing i was talking to some of them vulnerable democratic senators yesterday. i asked them, bob casey and sherrod brown whether they support this, presidents action yesterday what would have been better if we got republicans to support the bipartisan deal with the dealt with both asylum but also give us new resources to stop fentanyl at the border with new technology. the good ideas that congress finally passed the bipartisan border bill to secure the border and to pass an immigration bill and presence of both parties have failed, and i'm hopeful that we do that and make a real difference. >> but you desire to be moving in an executive action enough about this, yeah since i didn't know enough about this, yeah, they didn't say they're not necessarily coming out in a bracing this. >> they're leaning on the bipartisan border deal that donald trump and republicans killed and was much more conservative, not necessarily
2:09 am
embracing something that the left is very happy, right, right. >> and i think you're your late you're going to continue to hear these democrats, vulnerable democrats sort of use that line and you've seen the white house say, look, this is ultimately on congress. congress needs to come up with the legislation solution, legislative solution for the issue on the southern border. so i think you're going to continue to hear these vulnerable democrats push that talking point when it comes to these actions. it's from biden though, walking a very fine line, not wanting to push away some of those swing voters in their states all right, we'll see how this all plays out. >> julia manchester. thank you for that. and up next thousands of acres burned homes and businesses destroyed it's like wildfire in new mexico spreads plus from the mickey mouse club to a jail cell, latest on justin timberlake arrested and charged with dwi i morning, a legend. a look at the legacy left behind that the great

2:32 am
deserves absolute immunity. yeah. i mean, even holly saying it depends on what you're considering an official official part of his job and he's talking about overturning the election in an official part of your job? >> yeah. and he's also talking about apps solute immunity versus immunity that presidents are given. and i think you're right. i mean, you were speaking to a few members who are are very strong supporters of the president. there are other people who do not want to be asked about his supreme court cases or his legal cases every day. but that is the reality that we're going to let's see on capitol hill, you know, you covered it for so many days, but it seems like they're going to have to deal with this is gonna be the biggest case against him, right? in the supreme court. and whatever implications of that, i mean, it's going to impact if he becomes president again, their everyday lives. yeah, it really will of course impact them to immediately criminal federal criminal cases. but classified documents case in the election subversion case on the federal level, we'll see what happens as me so closely watch, we're all waiting for that day. now. meantime, we saw jump come to
2:33 am
capitol hill last week, we saw republican members fall in line and clean the senate republican leader what was interesting is that there were some trump critics who are in that room were chopping could look senator mitt romney, who we have not heard from about this meeting and about why he attended and what he said, if anything, to donald trump. so it caught up with him yesterday and i asked some about that it didn't go there to support former president trump. >> i went there to listen to what he was planning on doing if he became president with president trump, it's a matter of personal character i draw a. line and say, when someone has been actually found to have been sexually assaulting that's so that's something i just won't crossover in the person i would want to have as president of the united states i mean, that's interesting comment. >> i mean, obviously he is the minority republicans on this, but he says, i draw a line and say, when someone has been
2:34 am
found to have been sexually assaulting, that's when i just won't crossover the support that person for present, referring to the e. jean carroll coates went down, trump was found sexually from liable for sexual assault. >> yeah. i mean, he's looking beyond all of the other legal challenges that donald trump is facing. and this is for him saying it crosses a line. obviously we know mitt romney is extremely religious, man you know, these, these he's always talked about trump's morals as one of his biggest downfalls and one of the hardest things about having to support him up until the impeachment but yeah, i mean, it goes back to show me and he's the minority not only in republicans, but in that room. i mean, the only other person that, you know, voted to impeach him or or to convict him was dan newhouse and the house republican session. so these are minority voices, but even the attendance is showing that he's still the republican presumptive nominee. he still the leader of their party and they will show up regardless of how they feel about him personally, i just wanted change says in 20121, right, mit romney wasn't republican
2:35 am
presidential nominee. now you've been covering a lot about about this upcoming address to congress from benjamin netanyahu, the israeli prime minister, in how progressives are dealing with this whole little elizabeth warren dealt with, uh, yesterday when i asked her about whether or not she would attend that address to congress do you plan to attend prime minister netanyahu's address to congress? >> no. >> look we need a ceasefire we need to get those hostages back. we need humanitarian relief and we need to be giving both parties a big shove toward getting to the negotiating table. able and working out a peaceful solution to the president made clear that he should not address congress. and then you look, that's up to the president, but i'm not going i mean, how do you think progressive? i mean, it's interesting. she's not going to go a number of progress is not going to go honey the audience will receive? and because of the progressives aren't there and maybe the people who are going to protest him won't be there. >> yeah. i mean, i think we can go back to 2015, you know, is
2:36 am
stunning numbers nearly 60 democrats from both the house and senate side decided to boycott this. obviously, he was not a wartime president at the time. there weren't more than 35,000 palestinians in deaths. on the idf's. in response to what hamas did but i think we're going to see numbers beyond what we saw in 2015. i mean, netanyahu was once again coming not by the wishes of the democratic american president, not by the wishes of the minority leader or the majority leader, despite having, you know, he signed on after weeks of backdoor consternation about this. but i think we're going to see not just progressives as people i've been talking to centrists, obviously, nancy pelosi has been very vocal about how she feels about it. as she is no way of progressive. but we're going to see an interesting number of people choose not to come not only because they don't agree with what he has done, but the way that he is coming to congress and that will be something to watch in just a matter of weeks for an age hi, mary. thank you for coming in here. >> all right. this morning, russia's vladimir putin sitting down for talks with

2:38 am
