a warm welcome to our viewers joining us in the united states and around the world. >> i'm meloni jock has it is friday, june 21, 12 noon yet in dubai, foie him in atlanta, where in less than a week right here on cnn, us president joe biden will square off with former president donald trump and they first debate of the 2024 election cycle. but while the face is maybe the same, many of the issues are not details now, from cnn's jeff zeleny historic rematch between joe biden and donald trump. is anything but a rerun a vastly different set of issues are driving this race. as the president and former president come face-to-face for the first debate of the 2024 campaign for years since they shared a stage, the worst, whereas america has ever had in 47 months. i've done more than you've done in 47 years. joe feels like an upside down lifetime ago you back when the

coronavirus pandemic was raging thank you. >> okay. >> to understand if you look, i mean, i have a mask right here. >> i put a mask on when i think i needed this is his economy as being he shut down in the biden trump's sequel, an entirely new fight has been brewing on the campaign trail. >> you could end up in world war three with this person is the worst president ever hand in tv ads, this election is between a convicted criminal who's only out for himself and i president, who's fighting for your family, that offers a window into the new issues and fresh lines of attack. >> a reminder of just how much the country, the world and yes, they have changed from an insurrection and all its fallout to a new fight on abortion rights in the wake of the us supreme court overturning roe versus wade to russia's invasion of ukraine and a war in the middle east to the very stark question of america's role in the world. yet the economy inflation, and

immigration are still at the center of it all trump's record was at the heart of their last debates, even as he sought to deflect if he gets in, you will have a depression the likes of which you've never seen your foro. one case will go to hell and it'll be a very, very sad day for this country while those warnings didn't come to pass, biden's record is now under the microscope, complicating his effort to make it a referendum on trump. >> the fact is that everything he's saying so far it's simply a lie. i'm not here to call out his lies. everybody knows he's a liar, and america's oldest presidential candidates, or even older, trump's 78 and biden at one with age and fitness for office. now a central issue in the race public opinion for president's can be punishing biden's favorability has fallen 11 point since 2020, with nearly six in ten americans holding an unfavorable view, perceptions of trump have changed less with more than half still seeing him in an unfavorable light. televise debates have long been
1:05 am
a storied part of his presidential campaigns in history remaking moments for candidates. >> here you go again, get this showdown is without parallel, the nation's 45th and 46 president's still seeking to define one another in the earliest general election debate in memory. >> and all dual being fought on new ground and it will be an extraordinary sight, a sitting president facing a former president. it simply has never happened in a televised debate in american history. of course, the last event was all about trump's record. now, this one is likely to be about biden's record. of course both candidates are still trying to draw that contrast with one another. one thing that's clear, this is the earliest debate in presidential campaign history. the question is, will this define the race for the months to come jeff zeleny, cnn washington well, you can cheat in to see the cnn presidential debate, right here on cnn coming up on thursday, june 27, at 9:00 p.m. eastern.
1:06 am
>> add will be replay the debates in its entirety. a few different times on june 28, and you can watch us at 7:00 a.m. in london. and that is two in the afternoon in hong kong, or 12 hours later at seven in the evening in london, or 10:00 p.m. in abu dhabi well, a us federal appeals courts has rejected a bird by steve bannon to delay the start of his prison sentence. that from a trump adviser is scheduled to report to a low security prison camp in connecticut on july 1st, a jury convicted bannon for contempt of congress nearly two years ago after you've failed to comply with a subpoena for testimony, is attorneys are expected to ask the supreme court to intervene. bannon is also facing criminal charges in new york for a fraud scheme to raise money for a us us-mexico border wall in the middle east, each passing day brings new fears that the war in gaza may not be israel's only major concern. us officials tell cnn, they are
1:07 am
worried that israel's iron dome air defense system could be overwhelmed in a full scale war with hezbollah attacks from the lebanese militant group backed by iran, had been on the rise over the past few months, and israel has responded with air strikes, us officials say israel plans to shift resource from gaza to the north and land and air incursion into lebanon is increasingly likely. israel has evacuated about about 60,000 people who live along its northern border. >> and more than 90,000 people have fled their homes in southern lebanon. >> more now from cnn's natasha bertrand cnn is learning that us officials have serious concerns that in the event of a full-blown war between israel and hezbollah, the lebanese militant group could overwhelm israel's air defenses in the north including israel's much vaunted iron dome air defense system those spheres have only intensified as israel has increasingly indicated to us officials that it is preparing for land and air incursion into
1:08 am
lebanon to try to push has beloved back from the israel-lebanon border israeli officials have actually told the us us that they're planning to shift resources from southern gaza to northern israel in preparation for a possible offensive against hezbollah and one us official said the us is preparing for the worst, telling cnn, quote, the fact that we have managed to even hold the front for this long has been a miracle despite the israeli signaling that they're preparing for a possible effect sensitive though they have been surprised by the sophistication of some of hezbollah's recent strikes. >> and they continue to worry about the fact that hezbollah has been stockpiling precision guided munitions and missiles from iran for years, as many as 150,000 of them, according to idf estimates. now, the us is scrambling at this point to try to de-escalate the tensions at the border, but israeli officials have signaled that they are determined to create this buffer zone and push hezbollah back. so that israelis can return to their homes in the north the us is trying to do that
1:09 am
diplomatically. but as one senior administration official said, quote, we're entering a very dangerous period. something had start with little warning natasha bertrand, cnn in washington well, the top us diplomat is making it clear the biden administration, once a diplomatic solution between israel and hezbollah, secretary of state antony blinken met with two top israeli envoys in washington on thursday, us officials have not let's said whether they would support and israeli incursion into lebanon, but they continue to stress the need for a ceasefire in gaza the best way to unlock the possibility of a resolution along the israel lebanese border would be achieving a ceasefire in gaza and we continue to actively pursue a ceasefire in gaza primarily four, to alleviate the suffering of the palestinian people in gaza and security the return of hostages. but a very important side effect we assess
1:10 am
would be making it much easier to achieve a ceasefire and diplomatic resolution along the israel-lebanon board want to bring in cnn's not a big share following developments from london for us, not a great to see you, israel has approved operation plans for a potential offensive in lebanon. >> we know tensions are rising. we've just heard that in some way, getting a ceasefire in gaza is going to help deescalate anything we see between israel and hezbollah. but what is happening on the diplomatic front that will help reduce hostilities? >> well, we know that the us has been engaging in talks on both sides calling for an end hostilities between the iran-backed hezbollah militants in southern lebanon and israel. these talks have been ongoing for some time. as you mentioned, secretary blinken met with israeli officials on thursday so again, calling for a de-escalation, they're unclear whether the us has committed any sort of support at this stage of for any kind
1:11 am
of israeli offensive lebanese territory. but there are certainly mounting concerns over the potential for this to escalate and for this to drag across the region, not just in lebanon, as you mentioned, this is tied very very closely to the situation in gaza. the message that we have been hearing from hezbollah officials for months now is that there actions, they're targeting of israeli territory becomes in direct response to what is happening in gaza, that there cannot be an end to violence on the lebanese israel a border until there's a ceasefire in gaza. so they are very directly linked in the eyes of hezbollah in lebanon. but of course, at the potential for an air and land incursion in a deeper airline incursion by the israeli military in lebanon has stoke concerns amongst members of the international community. this is a very different situation to gaza. and what we've heard from the past from israeli military official said that they could, in their words, a copy and paste what we're seeing in gaza in lebanon. this
1:12 am
would have a significant regional implications. and as you mentioned, lending, we've heard from us official said they all concern that hezbollah could overwhelm israel's air defense systems. hezbollah is a very different organization to hamas. this is not the same situation we should politically and militarily farms sophisticated with a much stronger military arsenal. so certainly concerns there around the potential for this to escalate. and we've heard from the lebanese government as well. well, these confrontations all directly between hezbollah in the south and the israeli ministry, the lebanese government has said that it would not stand idly by if israel threatened let's to push lebanon into an all-out war. so certainly concerns on all fronts that absolutely. >> of course this escalating to a wider war it really comes to what the end goal in gaza are going to be. and that has been very debated. is there alignments on what the potential outcomes should end? could be well, look, we
1:13 am
continue to him mixed messages from israeli officials. of course, within prime minister netanyahu's own cabinet, there are various views on what that end goal should look like. >> we know that netanyahu is facing mounting pressure for more right-wing elements of his cabinet who are calling for hamas to be completely eradicated. did for this war to continue until that goal is met. we know of course the netanyahu met with the family members of some hostages held captive in gaza, including the founding members of hostages who have been killed while in captivity in gaza. he said that there can be no end to the war in gaza until all hostages are returned. of course, that is one of the key elements since of ongoing ceasefire negotiations and peace proposals currently on the table we have heard other messages, though from israeli officials, including israeli government spokesperson he has said that the pre-work that for the end of the war being defeating hamas militarily and also their governing capabilities. but that this does not necessarily mean that all hamas militants killed. we've also heard from the chief military spokesperson,
1:14 am
daniel hagari for the israeli military is saying that hamas is not just a matter of militants on the ground, but it is an. ideology as well that that cannot be entirely defeated. and of course, on the international front, we've heard from the biden administration saying that the current us assessment is that hamas has as an organization been downgraded to a point where they cannot carry out an attack, such as the attack that we saw in october 7 again, that is a key message from the white house pushing israel to come to some sort of peace agreement sooner rather than later all right. >> nada bashir. thank you so much for that analysis greatest. see you what israel's military says. >> it has eliminated two people described as terrorists who posed a threat to its forces in central and northern gaza to the south. video shows severe damage caused weeks ago at the rough er crossing passenger terminal on the gaza side of the border with egypt. no aid has passed through the crossing since early may. meanwhile, the

pentagon says more than 600 metric tons of aid has been transferred into gaza through that temporary pier which was re-anchored off the coast on wednesday to reiterate that while it's always been our intention for the pier to be a temporary solution as part of the broader international effort to surge humanitarian assistance into gaza. >> to meet the urgent needs of the palestinian people. we have not established an end date for this mission as of now meanwhile, extreme heat is making its mark across much of the united states, more than 100 million americans in the northeast and southwest will be under heat advisories, watches and warnings through the weekend. >> the national weather service says, many across the midwest have already gotten a taste of the unseasonably hot temperatures maggie and crazy,

overwhelming, but it is what it is staying cool is process this week, i think eating a lot of ice cream, taking lots of showers and being grateful for air conditioning. >> we are so blessed to have it so stay hydrated and be well out there good advice there. >> and in new england, several daily high temperature records were set again on thursday with cities in new hampshire connecticut, and may mirroring the triple digits, well above the typical monthly average of around 80 degrees threes. temperatures are expected to call off a bit in northern new england today. but the race of the northeast is in for a doozy as the dangerous heatwave shifts to new york down to the mid atlantic states on top of the sweltering temperatures, large portions of the midwest and northeast are also forecast to have a quality deemed unhealthy for sensitive groups according to data from air.

donald trump these are people who are obsessed with personal grievance and settling scores their entire way of thing thinking about leading and administering this country is in the context of having been wronged and trying to engender support among their supporters by throwing this kind of red meat out to people who are who respond to the language. >> so we shouldn't be surprised by at all. they're both paranoid, old men, one of whom is on his way to jail and the other one, we'll see that might happen for him as well so that part doesn't surprise me. what's really to me shocking and disgusting about the rhetoric is what it says about who we are becoming as a nation and the fact that a person who is quite possibly the next president of the united states is engaging in this level of
1:34 am
absolutely fundamentally anti-democratic rhetoric and behavior and ideation. everything he says is stands in direct contrast to the nation that we think we are, the nation that we have always been. but i think people have got to start asking themselves, is this the direction? that we want to go? is this the country that we're becoming a place where an incoming president takes the levers of power and uses them for his own gratification to pursue enemies the new york times reports two federal judges in south florida urged the judge in donald trump's classified documents case to hand it off to another judge, aileen cannon refused and she's faced repeated scrutiny, ever since cnn's jessica snyder has the details my sincere thanks to the president's for honor of his nomination. judge aileen cannon, owes her nomination to
1:35 am
the federal bench to donald trump. and in the two years, she's overseeing the classified documents case against trump and florida, her handling of the criminal case has raised eyebrows especially her slow walking crucial decisions that make a trial before the november election, extremely unlikely. >> it's taking forever because judge cannon continues to indulge the defendant in just about every request granting hearings were other judges would have either rejected them or ruled based on the paperwork and now the new york times reporting two senior federal judges and florida privately urged judge cannon to pass off the case to another judge when it was randomly assigned to her in june 2023, she had been on the bench just three years at that point after being confirmed by the senate in 2020, when she was asked if she had any loyalty the president trump, she unequivocally responded. no then one of the first decisions related to the classified docs case favorite

trump, by granting his request to have a special master oversee the review of classified documents first seized by the fbi at mar-a-lago. it was a decision that halted the ability of doj's prosecutors to review the documents and a conservative appeals court, including two trump appointees rebuked her by reversing her ruling that they described as untenable and allowing the doj to resume its investigation that led to trump's indictment. attorneys who have practiced before, judge cannon tell cnn for drawn-out decision-making process, isn't unique to trump's case. attorney saying she is not efficient, calling her indecisive and noting she just seems overwhelmed by the process some of the defense attorneys who asked cnn not to use their names also say she is typically tough on criminal defendants and she is a very harsh sentencer. but they questioned her decisions on trump. one of them saying she's certainly playing a different game with the current defendant before her trump's

former attorney though, argues her decisions so far are about what he would expect in a criminal case at the beginning stages, there's a lot of people that are already kinda preemptively throwing stones at her saying she's overmatched he doesn't know what she's doing. the reality is, she's doing stuff that's actually pretty typical to federal practice for a non incarcerated defendant. >> judge cannon also has been tough on the special counsel's team. she is reprimanded them for failing to follow local court rules. another attorney describing cannon style this way she doesn't like the government to come in and play bully steamroller some don't see judge cannon is playing favorites though, and content. it just comes down to a lack of time on the federal bench. >> i think it's a matter of experience. she is sitting in a satellite courthouse by herself in fort pierce. there is no senior judge to help her along that's because schneider, cnn, washington well over the past 80 years, only codon gotta africa's richest man, has been building one of the world's

largest oil refineries in nigeria. >> it spans nearly 4,000 football fields and can produce some 650,000 barrels per day. recently returned to the refinery. and asked ali codeine gatera, it feels to be helping in nigeria's dependence on foreign petroleum. >> take a listen it is being one of. the largest infrastructure projects ever undertaken on the african continent. >> the aim to build one of the world's biggest oil refineries capable of processing 650,000 barrels of oil a day it all began back in 2016 with dredging, pumping vast amounts of sand in to marsh land we decided to do a survey and said that in the next 50 years, how much was normal wallen washing levels can rise and we needed
1:39 am
this side to be higher than that so we had to elevate the side between one-and-a-half to 1.75 meters and that is 33 square kilometers of land. so you can imagine the amount of time we spent on dredging. that's when you came in and solve the sad coming in nigeria exports more oil than any other african country. it's also in the middle of a fuel prices. nigeria had a problem on its hands. it lacked refining resources. the process of turning oil into petrol, diesel but and jet fuel it was forced to export its oil to europe, get a refined and reimported back to the african continents at is later. and today, a vast network of tiring structures and mine miles and miles of steel pipes transports oil through various stages of production this is a world's largest single grain petroleum refinery. >> along with them, integrated petrochemical complex.
1:40 am

counted thus far. remember that in past years you have had tragedies due to overcrowding in 2015, there was a stampede incident more than 2000 people were killed and to try to get a hold of the numbers saudi officials have put caps annual caps on the number of pilgrims who can eat come from each country. but you don't need a special hajj visa to get to saudi arabia and take part. you can get there with a tourist visa or work visa, or some other way. and so it seems that many of the people who died were in this category. and so it means that some of these people may have been in substandard accommodation, whereas official hajj pilgrims are staying an air condition tents in the desert means that they may have run into trouble or gotten lost walking between sites in the stifling heat, whereas official pilgrims have better access to transportation options. some country trees are opening investigations like egypt and jordan into some of these unofficial companies to help facilitate these trips and while most countries are not

the opening night of the copper america here in atlanta, the rbc less they beat in canada by two goals to nil. >> it was tied in the first half. canada can be pretty proud of the way they played against the world's top team. but it was a different story in the second half as the albiceleste they scored early and then late in that second half and in-between, they had an absolute handful of chances 19 shots, 64% of the possession, it could have been a much bigger scoreline. canada need to figure out where they will go from here. but argentina, who are the reigning world and defending copper america champions have made a good start and there is much to build on the subplot to all of this. is that this is the final tournament for an argentine legend, angel de maria and it might prove to be the, final tournament for the captain arguably the greatest of all time, lionel messi, he has already indicated he's given clues that the last world cup that he played in, which ended with him hoisting the trophy and qatar would be his last,
