they say is baldwins negligence while overseeing a set allegedly plagued by dangerous conduct, he didn't do any of the things that he was supposed to do to make sure that he was saying if or that anyone around him was safe, and then he pointed the gun at halyna hutchins and he pulled the trigger beyond baldwins approaching legal fate, the future of russ is in limbo. there is no distribution partner, there was no release date beyond this one movie, a larger question remains, will the deadly accident on the set of rust lead to new laws regulating safety? practices across the film industry. there's a ton of production and other states like georgia with atlanta also new mexico. >> and of course new york. so it remains to be seen, just the reach of this terrible tragedy. and if these laws will go into effect nationwide and here in court yesterday as significant win for alec baldwin, what prosecutors originally wanted to do was charged them not for his role as just the person holding the gun when it went off, but also for his role as a
5:01 am
producer on this movie set, saying he was responsible for a culture of unsafe practices on the set. >> the judge ruling that he will not be focused on as a douceur. now, what the jurors will have to grapple with here, kate is on one hand, it can still be criminal for someone to be engaged in an accident. but on the other hand, is an actor response so if someone hands them a gun on a movie set and tells them that it's empty. is there criminal liability a jury will decide jury selection starts here just a short time from now, kate josh, thank you so much. we'll be following it very closely for us. appreciate it and new hour of cnn new central starts now resident, biden facing one of the biggest tests of his presidency today, and he won't be in the room. >> house democrats meeting next hour on biden's political well future as some of them call for him to withdraw from the race and breaking overnight at least eight people have been killed since hurricane beryl slammed into the u.s. in texas,
5:02 am
millions are still without power as temperatures are set to store today, creating dangerously hot conditions. there and brazen russian strikes across ukraine, including on kyiv's largest children's hospital. there is at least 39 people that have been killed or injured. hundreds more we are live in kyiv in the aftermath of the brutal assault. i'm sara sider with kate bolduan and john berman. this is cnn new central the question is democratic law makers have been asking and have been asked for days include, should president biden stay in the 2024 race? >> can he carry the message against donald trump effectively? and is there really a viable alternative? very soon, maybe some answers. the first of two critical meetings happening today will begin shortly as biden looks to
5:03 am
once and for all, put to bed those democratic doubts all house democrats gathering for the first time since biden's debate performance, this meeting will put those who have publicly come out to call for biden to drop out in the same room with the group calling for him to stay in and forge ahead. no cell phones allowed, which means things could get quite real shortly after that, senate democrats will be meeting for a similar conversation when their weekly lunch cnn's arlette saens leads us off from the white house this hour and arlette, what is the view from the white house of these congressional meetings today? okay. president biden has certainly facing several key test today, not just up on capitol hill, but also with allies as the nato summit is set to kick off. now president biden has been adamant he is remaining in this race, really engaging in this assurance campaign, even as there have been some serious doubts expressed from some democrats up on capitol hill. now, the white house is well aware that a lawmakers will be able to
5:04 am
voice their opinions relating to president biden's future of his candidacy. but they've also pointed to some rallying of support for president among some democrats on capitol hill. now there will be two key meetings playing out for democrats today. first, this morning, there will be a meeting of the house democratic caucus, and then later today in the afternoon, there will be the weekly senate democratic luncheon. this will give lawmakers an opportunity to discuss a host of topics, but it's expected that the president's a candidacy will be a key feature now so far publicly in the house six, house democratic lawmakers have called for the president to step aside in this race. we have yet to see anyone publicly say so on the democratic side in the senate. but there are several who are voicing their concerns and saying that the president must show voters that he is up for the job. now i want to read you one of those statements from senator patty murray who said, quote, we need to see a much more forceful and energetic candidate on the
5:05 am
campaign trail in the very near future. in order for him to convince voters, he is up to the job. that is something that democrats in the senate and house have both been expressing in recent days with them, there are these pockets it's of support that had been quite vocal in favor of biden staying in the race last night, the president called into a virtual meeting of the congressional black caucus at to make his case we're told that during that meeting there was really no pushback against the president remaining in this race the democrat black lawmakers have been among some of the people coming out in the strongest support for president biden. in recent days. now, so we'll see how all these meetings play out up on capitol hill. but then the president is also facing a key test on the world stage today, he will address the nato summit at a time when there's a lot of concern about the future sure of ukraine and also the potential prospect of a second trump presidency. so the president's, every move at this summit will be analyzed, not just people by people here at home, but also those leaders on the world stage at a time
5:06 am
when the white house insist that the president's remaining in this race and the heat he is up for the job arlette, thank you so much from the white house for us. >> john, with us now is democratic congressman emanuel cleaver of missouri, a member of the congressional black caucus, who will be part of this. all democratic caucus meeting in an hour or so. thank you so much for being with us congressman. you did an interview with kansas city's kasie eur just a few two days ago, about five days ago, i want to read something you said during this interview, you said, quote, we'll put up on the screen here so people can see it i am worried about the president's ability to continue the campaign. however, i'm looking to be reassured this coming week that this performance is a one-off. he had a bad night, but can honestly take a polygraph test and say, i have not come to a final conclusion. now, we don't have a polygraph machine here, but have you come to a final conclusion? >> well, i've come to the final conclusion that president
5:07 am
biden is not ready to be rolled into an old folks home. if that's not an insult but i do think that the president based on everything i have seen and heard is the same joe biden that i started campaigning for nio, iowa with john kerry three-and-a-half years ago we went we went from one end devour to the other and across we never drew a crowd more than 22 people and ames, iowa and this is before people came on board. and we were able to pull it out but here's the thing that i think is important. democrats will not be able to attract others to the light. if we keep hanging out in the dark partners of this content and doubt i think the present is trying to do everything he can to give us some confidence that
5:08 am
he is in charge of himself. and so i'm not willing to jump to conclusions that are not there so five days ago with casey you are you still were not sure whether you wanted him to stay in the race, but today you are what changed well i've had the opportunity to be around the president since then and to be in conversation with the president i didn't raise any i didn't speak last evening at all. >> but i saw the president just sit there for an hour and he talked about the issues that he's concerned about. affordable housing which is one of the biggest needs, if not the greatest domestic need we have in the country right now. and i just i sat there thinking, this man is, it has been the leader making so many things happen that have never happened in my lifetime, may
5:09 am
reducing child poverty in half is not something that we just toss out of the window and say good job, bye, by. i mean this man has made really big changes, maybe more changes than anybody since maybe roosevelt and, lyndon johnson so i am not against him and i think it's important for me to say this as well. president biden has already won the nomination, and i've told people at home does that the only way joe biden comes out of this race. if joe biden takes joe biden out of the race, he is in charge of the money that has gone into the biden campaign and so i think we are jumping a little bit ahead of a horses and talking about whether or not we can cause him to step back. that was nothing he said last evening, not one sentence. that made me think that he was either going to back down or that he had lost
5:10 am
something. he has not how short as the leash do you think if he does continue in this race? >> what could change your mind? what would you need to see that would have you reconsider your support for him well, you know the way he's out now is clearly a display of public display of the fact that he is in charge and that he just simply had a bad night you know, it is it is too late for us to win the presidential debate of week-and-a-half ago but that's okay because the next three months biden should come to the conclusion that it's his to win or lose, and if he continues on the way campaigning in the way he is presently. >> i think they're going to be people coming back a board who might have fled after the
5:11 am
disastrous debate. >> what you see are about to go into this democratic caucus meeting what do you say to the handful of your colleagues who have said they think that the president should step aside in this race well i think it's going to be democrats want to be that's very candid. >> it's going to be direct and in some cases, it may even become a contentious but i think there's not one single member in there who would walk to a microphone and say that the president has lost it because he hasn't i'm hoping that this is a good meeting i think that we know a couple of things. one is that biden has character of the other guy is one and we've got to make sure people continue to realize that there is a person that we do
5:12 am
need to get out of washington and who is 1,000 times more dangerous than joe biden. so i think the people in the democratic caucus all going to be candid. i've done around here almost 20 years and i've been in meetings where we've been very candid with various people, including the president, united states, including present barak obama and so i don't expect people to back a ton today that they're not gotten about going back back back away. and that'll be less vocal. it's going to be a good meeting. i don't you know, there's not going to fisticuffs. >> well, let you get there congressman emanuel cleaver. we appreciate your taking the time to speak to us this morning. we'll talk to you again soon. thank you. sara. right now, the discussion on president biden, but the focus might shift next week if donald trump it gets ready to announce his vice president pick plus a massive heatwave is blanketing the western us shattering records and creating dangerous, sweltering conditions. since also a brazen russian assault

sketches, and just help us bring our dreams to life a huge shock we continue most debt study of shark bites these shots, or so bold continues tonight at 8:00 on discovery. >> this morning, house democrats are having a family meeting of sorts. what comes out of that closed door family meeting could decide the immediate fate of the presumptive democratic presidential nominee, president biden house minority leader hakeem jeffries. he's leading
5:18 am
this gathering and he sure has not said much in the days since the debate. what he but he did say this yesterday yes, i made clear the day after debate publicly that i support president joe biden and the democratic ticket my position has not changed president biden for his part says he is not going anywhere despite a growing number of democrats coming forward publicly to say he should step aside. and he also says that not going anywhere and staying in the race is exactly the message that he is hearing from voters. >> all the data, all the data shows that the average democrat out there who voted comes 14 million of them, had voted for me. still want me to be the nominee? >> cnn's john king joins me now from washington. so john, let's start inside this meeting and then let's talk about what biden was saying
5:19 am
right there. what happens inside the meeting. i think we can a little bit guess knowing how caucus meetings can go, right? members are going to go in, they're going to make their case there will be some applauding and there will be some not applauding. but what comes out of that meeting is where it feels like anyone's guess, how does he keep jeffries manage this? >> it's a fascinating challenge for a man who is relatively new in this job is democratic leader, right? he took over for nancy pelosi when she stepped aside. he's going into his first election cycle. you just heard representative cleaver and the interview with john berman. there's a great sense of loyalty, a great sense of affinity, a great sense of love and respect for joe biden among house, most house democrats. hakeem jeffries has to play to that the loyalty in his caucus, especially among the black caucus and hispanic caucus, they say, let's stick with joe biden. however, does he want to be speaker a keen jeffries, then he has to listen to the ten or 20 members who say, when i go home, i live in a really tough district since the debate, if the climate is getting even tougher think. i'm going to get blown out.
5:20 am
that's the fear among democrats that president biden's standing has slipped to the point that he's not only going to lose the election that's what they think, but he's going to cost them the house. any chance to win back the house in any chance to keep the senate. that's what they're worried about. some of that's personal survival, some of that's political, some of it is mr. president, listen to us. do you want your legacy to be? donald trump winning the white house, getting a republican house, getting a republican senate. and having it all trump washington. >> no i mean, biden saying that average voters are still with him. i mean, he says that's what he is hearing from them on all the data suggests you've spent months and months meeting with voters, including since an after the cnn debate is that what you're, is that what you're hearing from voters yes and no? >> yes. in the sense that you don't have any people who vote or plan to vote for biden who are saying now i'm going to vote for donald trump. i watched the debate and i'm going to vote for donald trump, democrats aren't saying that, but a lot of democrats are nervous especially one of the things that's interesting in my travels is my parents died very young. i'm saying something personally, but i
5:21 am
don't have this experience when you talk to people who have aging parents, they see things in the president now, they're saying, whoa, wait, wait, wait a minute about what they're seeing. they're concerned about this. they want to see him more. they want to see him prove that it was a bad night, but a lot was a lot of voters say, is there conversations with their friends and their colleagues? the independence of the soft republicans, maybe the nikki haley voters that since the debate, those people are saying, i can't vote for that guy. so if you're in a battleground state of michigan or wisconsin, or pennsylvania democrats including rank and file average, americans are nervous in general. are you noticing a shift in the conversation in the, in the real-world since the debate well, in washington, you could argue that biden is winning the weak in the sense that those who want him to step aside were hoping he would do so by the middle of the end of the week, and the president has made crystal clear he is not going to do that and you can't the democratic. >> vote his right democratic voters have made him the presumptive nominee. you can't take it away from him. he would have to step aside here so he's kind of winning the week,
5:22 am
but it's kinda ugly. he's winning ugly if you will. we're going to see more data in the days ahead, there are a lot of democrats who are worried kate, that the longer this goes on the messier it will be if the president stepped aside, for example what kind of process do you have? how quickly do you do it? the delegates would have to pick a new nominee. how messy would that be? so the longer this goes on, the later it goes on the calendar, the election is 17 weeks from today, 17 weeks from today. we pick a new president. and the longer it goes on, even democrats who think maybe it would be best for the president to step aside, start to think, oh boy so this will get messy. this will get ugly. can we handle it appropriately? so the clock in some ways is the president's friend, but i would also just be careful privately, there are deep concerns among democrats whether their campaign strategists, whether the candidates themselves, i was just in wisconsin, senator tammy baldwin has a very strong brand, you know, or from your days covering the hill she also has a very tough race this time. she's one of the candidates who a week ago, ten days ago thought, i'm going to win my race has got to be really close. are now thinking, oh, interesting. i don't know
5:23 am
political landscape, how quickly it can change it's great to see you, john. thank you thank you. john. >> all right. millions of americans are waking up without power this morning from hurricane beryl. now, they are up against the clock to reach sure. power. as extreme heat threatens the recovery effort. and an actor who played a street fighting newsman in anchorman has now pled guilty to street fighting police officers at the capitol on january 6 i love no cnn is live from milwaukee as republicans unite behind their nominee, his vp, and their plans to take back the white house, follow cnn for complete coverage. the republican national convention starts monday on cnn. >> let's get started though where's your mask i really tried sleeping with it everybody, but i'm done struggling now i sleep with inspire. >> inspire, inspires of sleep apnea treatment that works inside my body with just a click of this button, a breton

5:28 am
the dark. no possibility of prolonged power outages lasting days or even weeks in some areas situation particularly dangerous given that some cities in southeast texas are still under a heat advisory, and they may experience temperatures in the 90s with heat indices potentially storm soaring up to 105 degrees meteorologist derek van dam is in rosenberg, texas experiencing some of this heat. it looks like it's not raining or wendy at that time, but there is plenty of clips in up that needs to happen let me know what you've been saying yes. >> there are really the combination of a hurricane, a power outage, and a heat wave is a nightmare scenario for so many. and this is only going to become more common as humans continue to warm the planet fueling these extreme weather events like hurricane beryl will income the troops. mcalary hear they are behind us. we're
5:29 am
on one of the dozen or so utility staging, rescue, utility restoration staging areas in the greater houston area and this is a multistate effort. and of course, the top priority restore power to the people before the heat sets in but that's a big task. look at the numbers. harris county 70% over 70% of harris county how do you alone without power? i drove through it this morning. it was treacherous down power lines down trees in complete and utter darkness in neighborhoods in houston, over on the state of texas just 2.3 million customers without power. they're going to attempt to restore power to around roughly 1 million customers by the end of the day tomorrow but the heat wave that is setting in as the big concern because now people won't have the opportunity to cool themselves, seek relief from the heat heat indices today and tomorrow. 105 degrees, that's why the national weather service has issued this heat advisory that's in place for houston and the greater surrounding areas. so this is going to be a
5:30 am
concern going forward as the cleanup efforts are widely underway, as people tried to clean up their front yards for instance, they can't come home and seek any kind of relief with air conditioning because they have simply no power. so the race is on. sir. we're looking at this patient was sergeant texas and he houston where the flooding is just terrible. >> thank you so much. derek van dam there live for us in rosenberg, texas. appreciate it. john so all that heat more than 50 million people across the united states are under heat alerts this morning several people have died and the temperature is not expected to drop in the week ahead cnn's stephanie elam is in the very hot woodland hills, california. >> good morning, stephanie good morning. >> john. okay. maybe we're not really hot yet, but i can promise you it will get hot and it's going to stay hot for several days out here. i'm going to look at the temperature gauge out here in beautiful woodland hills. and right now, it says it's 68. it was 692 seconds ago, but i promise you we're going to get up into some very high temperatures and this is not
5:31 am
just happening here. we're looking from seattle all the way down through sacramento coming down here into southern california at los vegas, death valley, we are seeing record temperatures that are falling day after day. this is all as we are seeing climate change, because how humans are warming up the earth, it is affecting many of these big cities these are making it very dangerous last week, the national weather service calling it a lethal heat wave that continues here, vegas yesterday hitting 115 degrees of just to put that in person, that's a third day in a row of it breaking its daily record high, it's going to perhaps continue to do that. going into monday and they have been above 100 degrees, 110 degrees since july 3. just to put that in perspective, death valley also showing very high temperatures, 125 degrees or higher. we did hear of that one motorcyclist who died because of heat and then they couldn't even get the helicopter in to help out because the temperatures were too high for the helicopter to fly. this is
5:32 am
what we are seeing around this region and it's going due process. what people really have to stay vigilant, all of this, jon, while we are still dealing with some very massive wildfires that continue to pop up across the state right? >> stephanie elam, let us know what a break 70. there. thanks so much for being with us. stephanie elam in woodland hills california house democrats are gathering this morning. >> the topic what to do about president biden? will they stand with him? will they look for a new candidate? lots of glass questions and maybe finally, some answers to come out. plus, it is the 20th anniversary of the most iconic movie of all times and that is maybe only slightly how much time do we're on what air right now? i'm ready good evening. >> i'm ron burgundy. here's what's going on in your world tonight et me.

are comfortable with his chances to both win the election for himself and help them win back the house i think one of the key questions going into this meeting today is, what is the message? it's from hakeem jeffries, the democratic leader. he has been really careful to listen to members to understand their concerns while also saying that he is backing biden. so i think that he's view and what he says in this meeting is going to be critical. i will note, kate, that we expect members are not going to be allowed to have their cell phones inside this meeting. this is supposed to be a private family discussion. this is really sensitive. this is an opportunity for members to voice their concerns to openly in a safe settings. so typically sometimes we get live readouts of these meetings that may or may not happen given the fact that so many of these members are not going to have access as to their phones during this ongoing conversation, i will note that yesterday, president biden called into a meeting with the congressional black caucus. this has been a cornerstone don't have support that the
5:40 am
president has had over the last several years on capitol hill. and a lot of members said that he asked for their support and no one really pushed back in that meeting. that is a good sign for biden. i will note, however in the united states senate, where you have a number of democrats running for reelection in red states like montana, ohio jon tester shared brown bowls voice. the fact that they believe voters have a right to be concerned will their concerns be assuaged? that's what we're going to be looking for in the next several hours. kate, it's a good point. it's good to see you, lauren. thank you so much. busy busy couple of hours ahead. sara. all right. this morning, voters in key battleground states are keeping a close eye on the political storm caused by the last presidential debate in this week's all over the map cnn's john king spoke to democratic voters in the wisconsin area about how they feel after president biden's performance and whether or not they think he should stay in the race. john is back with us

this hour. you know, if they want to know what voters are thinking at these politicians want to hear you've been talking to them, what have they been telling you? >> you know, sara, when you listen to the president yesterday said elites are trying to drive him from the race. will the people have cedarburg, wisconsin, where i was last week? they're not elites. their middle american middle american people in this town they call a norman rockwell painting. some democrats do think it's time for the president to step aside. others though, think it's really complicated and messy, but here's one one thing that's clear. they say before the debate, they thought he could win wisconsin again after the debate, they're not so sure cedarburg, wisconsin, fourth of july, the city's legendary parade runs two hours this is middle america as it gets any locals call cedarburg a living hallmark movie picture as polite. gina cilento was parade grand marshal this year. in carries to keep it civil theme over to her growing pickleball studio it just really is a place for people to

forget what's going on in the real-world. and they can focus on just having fun and getting along you think they need a place to forget what's going on. >> they do because it's extremely people have these anger issues it's so polarizing what's going on. >> yes. signs of polarization, even here my anxiety among democrats is why what jumps out now, i think last week hurt so much that he's really got to think of the party and the country before he thinks of themselves lisa and troy reissmann on a moonshine business are biden voters and are still stunned by his debate disaster. >> quite frankly, i didn't even finish watching. i was really having a hard time watching it yeah it was definitely scary. the first people that i called were my parents are really old and i said, what did you guys think about that? because obviously, i still know where i'm going to vote my vote is going to live, but they don't. and they were equally as scared, tiny cedarburg population 12,000 is
5:43 am
a new battleground community but then one of america's most competitive battleground states not long ago, it voted lopsided republican, but donald trump's struggles in america is changing suburbs. he won cedarburg in 2016, but with just 55%. joe biden won in 2020, just barely by 19 votes biden's voters say a repeat win here, suddenly feels less likely. >> we just need fresh leadership, new leadership, and somebody who's a little bit more, i like joe biden as as a person, you know, i think he stands for good things, but i'm just not sure he's there anymore to lead the country richard. >> think of our kids and grandkids, and maybe you should step aside only because there's it's. future doesn't look too bright with the other side taking over allen that barella is a fiscal conservative and socially liberal like many here,
5:44 am
disgusted with the choices there's something wrong. we're going to keep going for the better of two evils. >> i mean, it's something's got to change. we need a logical party, we need an independent party that makes sense that barella leans biden because he can't vote for trump. it's embarrassing how he speaks two people, how he treats people, how he responds to other countries. >> what was going through your mind watching the debate, watching biden tried to get through his words was just bad. >> just bad. now, everybody has a bad day. i get it. i get it. but the thing is, is this was a time that was your time to shine. >> did he look to you like someone who could serve for president for 4.5 more years? >> i don't think that what's let me put it this way. i'm voting for the party right now. >> do you think vice president harris is qualified to be president no. >> i don't think so but to my vote for joe biden, anyway, for the debate that barella thought
5:45 am
biden could eat, got another wisconsin win. >> now big doubts. yet he worries switching candidates might backfire. >> who's going to do it? and it's so late in the election process. that trump will be a shoo in anyway, that barella moved here to care for his aging mother. his winds were made in california and sold in small town cedarburg with a flash she slogan that draws fewer complaints. now than when he first opened shop five years ago. >> i have seen the demographic change a little bit. so now you're kind of getting on you know an even keel between conservative and liberal. >> gina cilento calls herself an independent libertarian, a good teacher very competitive, right? pass trump voter, very unhappy with the presence. >> this is the best our country can do. theirs certain things i feel just overall sadness for and to me the biggest issue is that a house divided cannot stand that's just, there's truth to that. and i'm seeing our country erode instead of
5:46 am
thrive. >> so lando can't see herself voting biden, but won't commit to voting. trump. proof. their biden's setbacks aren't automatically points for trump. but in politics like pickleball it helps to set the pace nothing interrupts treasured tradition here. but as the election year calendar turns, another page, the mood change in this battleground is stunning it was striking sara just how much democrats thought before the debate, biden would win wisconsin and when they're small community, now, they have serious doubts about that. one thing that came up repeatedly in cedarburg that's coming up in washington to a lot of democratic voters asking me, how did they hide this for so long, anger at the president and his staff for maybe masking some of the issues she's we saw in the debate. what happens from here. we'll see, we'll go back to cedarburg again, one of america's great battleground communities where democrats right now are nervous well, one thing i know that you can tell us who won is who won the pickleball game. >> that's what i want to know.
5:47 am
>> it was my first time it was a lot of fun. i'm going to learn. i'm going to learn. i wasn't sure it will be fine we didn't keep score, sara, we didn't keep score okay. >> i will check back in with your opponent jill, i'm getting thank you. that was wonderful. presume it, john it was a moral victory this morning, rescue operations underway after multiple russian strikes across ukraine, several children confirmed dead as ukraine's largest choice. goldman's hospital was hit in the strikes a new study just out on popular weight-loss drugs shows that not all are created equal new results show which drug will help you reach your goal weight perhaps the quickest i love milwaukee then is live from milwaukee as republicans unite behind their nominee, his vp, and they're plans to take back the white house, follow cnn for complete coverage. the republican national convention

5:52 am
is a holiday i'm rafael romo in kingston, jamaica. >> this is cnn or i new images this morning from the brutal russian aerial assault on ukraine that killed at least 39 people. >> one missile hit ukraine's largest children's hospital spittle in kyiv, wiping out two floors there. a baby was covered in the blood. you can see right there in that rubble were doctors and nurses have been caring for some of the sickest children ukraine throughout this war, every day, young patients were lined up on the street, cnn's fred pleitgen is in kyiv this morning outside hi, the hospital fred, we could see the rubble behind you tell us the latest hi there, john. >> i'm actually standing right at the impact site of where that missile still ahead, certainly looks as though it was a lot more than two floors that seemed had gotten blown up, you can see behind me that is where that part of that building used to stand. and you can see that and it was just
5:53 am
absolutely annihilated by that missile, i think on some of the rooms, you can still see the tiles obviously demonstrating that this is indeed the children's hospital, one of the biggest children it's hospitals in europe, not just the biggest in ukraine, but one of the biggest in europe. as we stand here right now, john, that death toll here, he's too, but also dozens injured one of the lines he thinks folks here say, is that they heard a rocket alarm and they managed to get at least the children and the sap evacuated out of the building as fast as possible. but i want to show you something else. i'll keep us is just absolutely remarkable and shows just how big the impact was. you can see that's what's left of some of the floors that are here. you can see some of those supporting beams. but if we actually pan over there, you can see that there's a car underneath that that's been absolutely flattened by when all of that came crushing down after the explosion place that you can see a massive explosion that took place right in the heart of key of the russians, of course, for their part have been saying that they believe this could have been a straight ukrainian and surface to air
5:54 am
missile that, that might have hit this building. the ukrainians having absolutely not saying it was a russian rocket and also saying that this was a deliberate attack on the health care service here in ukraine, but also on the children of ukraine well then of course, john, one of the things that we've been seeing so much of as the war here has been unfolding. you can see the ukrainians very quick to come in and try and clean all this up. these are volunteers that we've been seeing working here. they obviously have their work cut out for them. one of the things that the ukrainians have said that they want to do after an attack like this, as horrible as it is, as big as there's the carnage is. 29 people killed in all of key, there's other impacts sites as well they say they want to clean as much of this up as fast as possible to try to get back to a fairly normal life. all that, of course, also in defiance of what they say is the russian onslaught that has been happening. the ukrainians have said this is the president volodymyr zelenskyy that they will respond to this and they also say they need more surface to air missile systems. john,

video. here come sanjay, he's like, i don't want on any party suggest let's move on, guys let's move on to other news. a new study finds that not all weight-loss drugs are created equal apparently the study put popular weight-loss medications to the test and found that some are more effective than others. cnn's dr. sanjay gupta here to break down the latest science. and will also be answering our questions you can weigh in on ron burgundy later sunday you can do in later. talk to me about what these studies are finding you know, it's really interesting these drugs, so many people are hearing about these medications now. >> first the pronounces terzepotide and semaglutide a lot of people know these terms now, but terzepotide, these are the drugs that are made by eli lilly. there are zepbound and there is mounjaro. these are all fda approved drugs. semaglutide are the ones that are made by novo nordisk, wegovy, and ozempic. and they are for diabetes and they are also for weight loss now what's interesting is first of
5:58 am
all, the semaglutide the way that these medications work as they're all what are called post nutrient hormones. you eat in your body releases hormones to make insulin to tell your brain that you are full and to allow your food actually be digested with the terzepotide. you have two hormones with the semaglutide. you have one hormone known as glp so this study, now, after all, this study was basically trying to figure out which of these drugs work better specifically for weight loss so the study was of some 18,000 people, they went back and looked at medical records between may of 2022 and september of 2023, over a year. and they said which of these work better? and here's the findings. first of all, everybody lost at least 5% away, almost everybody on any drug. but what the terzepotide, again, the manjaro on average, people lost about 15% of their body weight at one year compared to the semaglutide such as ozempic, 8% at one
5:59 am
year. so that was, that was the big headline we didn't really know. but this was sort of the best i will say head-to-head comparison of these medications so does that in the 15% versus for me, does that just conclusively say that people should be using terzepotide versus the other i don't think so and here's why first of all there's medications again for diabetes, there's medications for weight loss. >> people sort of confuse these things a little bit. there's different dosing. if you're taking it for obesity versus weight loss. so in some ways, even though i said, you're comparing terzepotide and semaglutide. you weren't really comparing the appropriate dose of each medication if weight loss itself was sort of the end point that you were looking at. so i think we have to wait a little bit longer to see on the weight-loss specifically but also, you know, there are side effects to these medications and some people are going to have more side effects with one class of drugs versus the other. so that's a big part of
6:00 am
this, you know, in these trials, about half the people actually stopped taking the drug within that first year. for all sorts of different reasons. but i think a big part of that aside effects how severe are the side effects now that there's been some time and some more study. and when moore just real life examples of people taking these drugs in most people, they are going to be mild side effects, but i'll put a list of the side effects up and i'll tell you as you think about these side effects, remember, this is working on the brain to say that your full, it's working on the gut to slow down your digestion so that you can actually digest your food better. >> well, that can lead to nausea, that can lead to vomiting, even bowel obstruction in some cases, it stimulating your pancreas to make more insulin that could lead to pancreatitis so these are potential side effects. i think for the vast majority of people now that we have a lot more data, it does appear to be pretty safe, although a lot of people do get mild side effects, especially when they first her start taking the medications, which is why the dosing has sort of increased over time sort of accelerated over time. but that is sort of
