does. he is not out there doing jumping jacks every day to try to show how fit he might be, right? to be the quarterback. and the question of course, i think is how he can manage all of that cognitively to speaking. but senator, you are a very strong advocate for president biden. thank you very much for being i'm sorry that our panel didn't get the last word, but we are after 7:00 a.m. so i want to say thanks to them. thanks to you for joining us. don't go anywhere. cnn news central starts right now new warning signs in the democratic party party, a democratic senate are now saying publicly that he does not think joe biden can win reelection after that debate, performance. and that biden could take down their chances it says in the house and senate with him, millions in texas once again, waking up without power after hurricane beryl rolls through the state, dangerous heat only making matters worse as cleanup efforts continue, there and

on to my day job. now the question seems to be, are democrats on capitol hill ready to get on with their day jobs, get along and get in line, or something else. and what about voters, especially now that biden's rival is back on the campaign trail with commentary like this. >> the radical left democrat party is divided and chaos and having a full scale breakdown some context here this morning, the dam of support for biden has not broken yet, and there are definitely new warning lights flashing dot a source telling cnn that senators michael bennet, sherrod brown, john tester, behind closed doors. >> they all said that they do not think biden can win. and then senator bennet decided to say that at very publicly on cnn the white house in the time since that disastrous debate, i think has done nothing to really demonstrate that they

4:05 am
in this race. perhaps the most public push and campaign to assure lawmakers of that was in that letter that president biden wrote on monday where he said the question of how to move forward has been well-aired. it's time for it to end. now the president has been working both publicly and behind the scenes to try to rally and shore up support for his reelection bid. that includes holding those calls with the congressional black caucus meeting last night, virtually with democratic mayor is even placing one-on-one phone calls to key lawmakers including a key progressive voice, congresswoman alexandria ocasio-cortez. the president is hope is to further stop the bleeding of support that he saw from over the past week. but so far, only seven house democratic lawmakers have gone public with their calls for president biden to step aside in this race. but as you noted, there are many more who still harbor deep reservations about president biden's ability to

win in november. that is something that's senator michael bennet said last night on our air. now, the biden campaign pain in the white house say that the president will be pushing forward with his schedule today. this morning. he will be meeting with union chiefs at a afl-cio meeting later in the day, he will be attending various events for the nato summit, as well as hosting the new british prime minister here at the white house. this is all part of his efforts to show that he is out there doing the job of president. and of course, a lot of eyes will be on that solo news conference playing out tomorrow at a time when many of president biden's allies, and also those with concern say that he needs to do more in this campaign to show he's up for the job arlette. >> thank you so much more reporting coming from. where our white house team all throughout the morning. sarah kate, if there was a sign that president trump is loving all this, this is former president trump danced off the stage last night in miami. after launching several new attacks against biden and the chaos he says is dividing democrats that's right now. cnn's alayna treene has more on this. alayna, this was,

i think trump's first post-debate rally. and while biden's name was really not brought up a lot, you note this morning that for the first time this election cycle, he really dug into vice president kamala harris tell us what you heard that's right, sara and i found that to be one of the most interesting parts of his rally last night. >> and you're exactly right, this was his first rally, but also public event since the debate and what's notable about his attacks on harris is both donald trump and his team have really avoided did going after the vice president throughout their campaign. but last night that was not the case. and i think it just very clearly shows how closely donald trump and his campaign are monitoring, monitoring the situation around joe biden and questions over whether he will step aside and if kamala harris could potentially be his successor, take a listen to exactly what donald trump said

oh, whatever else you can be said about joe biden you have to give him credit for decision. >> probably just want decisions he's ever he picked kamala harris as his vice president know it was brilliant because it was an insurance policy may be the best insurance policy i've ever seen marco if joe had picked someone even halfway competent, they would have bounced him from office years ago, but no, sir. i do want to just share some insight reporting on how donald trump and his campaign are thinking about this. one is that despite what he is saying about kamala harris not being as strong of an opponent, donald trump and his team are very concerned about what it would look like if, if joe biden is not the person at the top of the democratic ticket, part of that is because they have done spent millions of dollars on modeling
4:09 am
and gathering data focused solely on going after joe biden. so they really don't know what having someone like kamala harris at the top of the democratic ticket would look like. and so his team is very much delighting in donald or in joe biden saying repeatedly that he is staying in the race and digging in on remaining as president and certainly when you look at the polling in americans saying they don't like either choice would be interesting to see what a new choice would mean. >> i do want to ask you about he he mentioned marco rubio, right there in his soundbite marker. was there speaking? did he give any any sort of idea as to who he's going to pick for vice president know that was the one thing we didn't hear. >> sara and he kind of dangled it in front of rubio and you're right, marco rubio was there. he spoke prior before donald trump took the stage. he had his entire family there that one moment. he actually joked that he that there were so much press at the rally because they
4:10 am
thought he was going to announce his pick. take a listen to what trump said. >> i think they probably think i'm going to be announcing that marco's gonna be vice president because that's a lot of press that's a lot of press. we had a vicious campaign for a while and he was tough and he was smart and i got to really know him well over the years and he's a fantastic guy. senator marco rubio now sara, he briefly mentioned marco rubio as you heard there, but then he quickly moved on and i can tell you it's still unclear what donald trump's timeline for announcing his vice presidential pick is i'm told by trump's team that it could come as late as monday, which is the start of the republican national convention in milwaukee. >> and so he has another rally upcoming this weekend and we're gonna be watching whether or not that announcement could come then sara. >> my my mind, his rhetoric has changed from little marco certainly we're seeing that now thank you so much, alayna,

mispronouncing her name well, i think he should take a cognitive test and her name is kamila, and it's been that her entire life and perhaps we should be talking about his mental acuity. but aside from that fact, kamala harris, much like many of us black women, has been underestimated and continues to deliver in overperformed. she's been elected twice statewide, a history maker in her own right. and to me, it demonstrates that mr. trump is probably scared of vice president harris. so that is what i take away from that the enemy does not attack those that they are not threatened by. so that is what i take take away from mr. trump trying to discount dismiss, and really disrespect the vice president who has done a yeoman's job when it comes to being a vice president. she has had probably one of the most difficult

some disadvantages. >> yes, it does only pay for what you need i'm rafael romo in kingston, jamaica. this is cnn us intelligence officials have new warning for people protesting the israel-hamas war. the director of national intelligence says, iran is trying to take advantage of the demonstrations by posing as activists online to stoke protests. and has even providing funds to protesters. cnn's katie bo lillis, joining me now. what are you learning about all of this? this is very interesting to see sort of the movement of iran into the u.s. sphere. >> yes. sara, look, this was really an extraordinary warning, real time warning of a foreign influence campaign by the nation's top intelligence official as it's happening, director of national intelligence, avril haines, warning that iran, just in recent weeks has moved to really ramp up its efforts to try to stoke these protests that we have seen college
4:51 am
campuses and elsewhere related to the conflict in gaza around according to haines, has been not only posing as protestors online, it is also, in some cases been providing funding to protesters. now, look for analysts who track this kind of foreign influence campaign. this isn't necessarily surprising that iran would try to do this. haynes and others have warned that in recent years, iran has really ramped up its efforts to try to meddle in foreign governments and try to try to meddle in, in foreign politics, including the united states. they tried to interfere in the 2022 us midterm elections, as well as the 2020 presidential election. and of course, we know that iran broadly opposes israel's military actions inside of gaza. and supports hamas. also important, i think here is that iran is going to be looking for any opportunity that they have to try to exploit existing divisions within the body politic inside the united states. and of course we know sara that these protests have been hugely divisive domestically, making them a ripe target not only for iran,
4:52 am
but other foreign adversaries who are, who are interested in seeing americans fight with each other rather than stand unified. now, really important to note here that haynes also says that americans who may have been interacting with this campaign likely did so unknowingly and she really emphasized the importance it's the kind of foundational nature of peaceful protest to american democracy, as you say here, saying that i want to be clear that i know americans who participate in protests are in good faith, expressing their views on the conflict in gaza. this intelligence does not indicate otherwise, but sara, that's where the warning comes in here. haynes really saying to american qin's, look, be careful who you are interacting with online. they may not be who they say they are, not creating the division, but stoking it in any way they can. thank you so much. katie bo lillis for your reporting. there. kate. >> we're standing by right now to hear from the secretary of state, tony blinken he said to speak as day two of the nato summit in washington is kicking off a big focus of the summit

is ukraine, president biden pledged yesterday to supply new air defenses to ukraine and ukrainian president zelenskyy spoke off from washington as well, making his case once again ukraine should join be allowed into nato asap he also made clear that the world is watching closely what is happening in the united states. and with the election watch everyone is waiting for november americans are waiting for november and europe, middle east in the pacific. >> the whole world is looking to go on into november truly speaking pushing wade's november to joining us right now, cnn global affairs analyst kim dozier, and cnn political and national security analyst david sanger. he's also the author of the book new cold wars. china's rise, russia's invasion, and america's struggle to defend the west
4:54 am
quite appropriate for what we're talking about today all over the place. david kim, let me start with you. you described this summit and it really caught my attention is the parade of wishful thinkers wearing rose-colored glasses. tell us what you mean and what are you hearing from sources about the view from nato allies on the crisis surrounding biden's presidential campaign right now publicly, well, they were always trying to hold on, david. go ahead, kim sorry. >> publicly, everyone is trying to say we are united. we are going to rush aid to ukraine, but privately, they use words like gloomy in terms of the outlook for this summit. yes, they're trying to front load as much aid to ukraine as possible. but the long-term trends look bad from russia getting itself on a wartime economy footings so that it could sustain this effort for several years to come. well, ukrainian military officials say their situation is fragile and everyone's looking ahead to the u.s. elections in the
4:55 am
fall because if donald trump is elected, multiple european officials tell me they cannot sustain the effort to ukraine without us help. and they're worried that trump might strong arm ukraine into negotiations with moscow and when we've heard that we've heard the whispers of what donald trump thinks about getting a negotiated end to this war for a long time. >> now, david about donald trump, he's campaigning once again, and he's campaigning in part on his hard line stance against for nato alliance misrepresenting nato allies and how they contribute to the alliance. but it continues to be his common refrain. let me play for everyone what he said just last night at a campaign event you know, i saved down up the first thing i figured out was they weren't paying. i said you have to pay your bills. they said sir, to ask you a question if we don't pay our bills, will you protect us from russia? i said you mean you're delinquent. he said,
4:56 am
yes, we're delinquent. let's say we're delinquent. will you protect us? i said no, i will not protect you from russia delinquent or not moving forward because more and more countries are spending at least that 2% of their gross domestic, gross national product on defense more so than they have in the past. >> but what are you hearing from sources, david, on the conversation among allies and how they are looking at the election, how they are preparing or not for biden to win or trump to win? are they scared or the looking forward to it? what is the sense you're getting? >> okay. that was fascinating to be in the room yesterday at the mellon auditorium, which is within nato treaty was signed in 1949. and it's where the president gave his speech and all of the allies were, were there. the leaders of the 32 nato countries, some other invited leaders, president zelenskyy so they were looking at the president for basically
4:57 am
three things first, what kind of shape was he in? and he gave a pretty rousing speech in a strong voice. he was, of course, on a teleprompter. so there was no trans who is going to go wander off as we saw during the, the debate. but he gave one of his stronger speeches for whatever that reassurance gave them the second thing they were looking for was what kind of commitment was he making to nato and there we heard sort of the greatest hits from his speeches in poland, elsewhere in europe, right after the war broke out. and a year later, he is obviously been one of the biggest champion nato. the third concern you're hearing now is of course, about the possible return of donald trump. but also a growing recognition that the 2%, which 23 of the 32 nations are ready
4:58 am
matt, matt is going to be nowhere near enough. kate for the kind of challenge that is clearly going to face them for the next 102030 years. this is a generational problem and the united states is not going to be able to spend enough arm enough to bring europe to that level. and that's what i think they have not yet sort of absorbed politically. >> that is really interesting, really interesting, david, about where things are headed. kim, i had john kirby on. i want to ask you about ukraine specifically. i john kirby on i asked her about the possibility of the u.s. lifting the current restrictions on how they're putting on ukraine in terms of using us weapons. and john kirby basically said the policy that they have in place and kind of using it just over the border. policies are not changing right now but do you think it's likely to change? do you think ukraine needs it to change ukraine does have the
4:59 am
permission from countries like britain to fire their munitions anywhere. >> the threat is france has put certain limitations that ukraine can fire, where russians have fired at them. that's essentially what we've got from biden, but just in a certain location. so perhaps that will ramp up to the next geographic area the major problem that the biden ministration seas and nato allies see happening is the air defense isn't good enough to stop, not just the attacks on civilian targets, but especially on infrastructure. and ukraine's energy network is soviet era. so nato allies can't rush in the technology they need to fix it. and already this summer you've got kyiv, the capital with while bowers and less electricity per day. that's going to be worse than the winter so the nato allies are looking at how do we get enough air defense in fast
5:00 am
enough to save enough of this infrastructure? >> kim, david, great to see you guys. thank you so much. john all right. >> this morning some economists are sounding the alarm about a new possible threat to the u.s. economy unemployment. cnn's matt egan is with us now. so what has economists concern here? matt well, john, for the past two plus years, it's been all about inflation. >> that's been the clear and present danger to the economy. prices were skyrocketing and the fed pumped all of this inflation fighting medicine antony economy designed to get prices under control and the good news is that the rate of inflation has cooled substantially. prices are no longer skyrocketing, but there is growing concern from economists about how the jobs market is holding up after all that tough medicine from the fed, there are yellow lights flashing, the unemployment rate is still low, historically low at 4.1%, but it has moved
