the brand new video calm along there you're together. >> it's good to hear you i can't have this phone call without saying to my girl, camila, i am proud of you this is going to be historic. >> we call to say michelle and i couldn't be prouder to endorse your to do everything we can to get you through this election and into the oval office. >> oh, my goodness michelle brock, this means so much to me. >> i am looking forward to doing this with the two of you, doug and i both and getting out there, being on the road. but most of all, i just want to tell you the words you have spoken and the friendship that you have given over all these years me more than i can express. so thank you. both so much. and we're gonna have some fun with this two-arm so this is not unexpected, but could be
4:03 am
a bit awkward for donald trump this morning overnight, his campaign said it would not commit to debating harris in part because she had not been endorsed by obama. >> well, now she has with us now cnn senior white house correspondent kayla tausche gala, again, not unexpected, but kind of shows this tight rollout that harris has had over the last now, this is what the sixth day yes. >> john highly choreographed, even though all of this came together in the 11th hour over just the last week, this was a critical piece for vice president harris to get the endorsement from a party leader who still has influential sway across the entirety of the democratic party it was, it's not, it's shouldn't be understated. the fact that this came on several days after her candidacy became official, but also after the official process to clinch those delegates came through as sources have said
4:04 am
that the obamas didn't want to be seen as annoying teeing vice president harris, or as seen as part of a coronation in the words of one at choosing instead to wait until after some of those processes has, have played out. but certainly it is going to provide quite a bit more momentum for a campaign that has already seen quite a bit of that $126 million raised as tuesday, the campaign has not provided an updated number, even though several days that followed that. and even though several major organizing calls have taken place, including one last night with white women, where 100 and 164,000 women participated in that harris is going to be trying to use that momentum across the battlegrounds in the coming days they campaign saying that just today it will be holding events in michigan north carolina, georgia, wisconsin, and pennsylvania following on dozens of events taking place across other battleground states leading up to this
4:05 am
point. of course, the calendar is very crunched at this zero point there are a lot of deadlines coming up in august alone. we've learned from sources that vice president harris and her team are expected to lock in a running mate by august 7, that would be a process that would be just about two weeks from start to finish. august 1 is the earliest date that the rules committee has decided that early voting could begin. and then of course, there is the convention that 19th through the 22nd, less than a month away at this point. so certainly there's a lot to do in just the next few weeks, guys. >> yeah, not a lot of real estate left on that calendar. kayla tausche. great to have you on all the morning's. thanks so much for being with us. appreciate it. >> the presidential campaign getting curiouser and curiouser, donald trump hitting the pause button on a debate with kamala harris after originally agreeing to one with president biden that was supposed to be on september 10. harris wasted no time accusing trump of backpedaling posting
4:06 am
on x quote, what happened to anytime any place? cnn's alayna treene is with me now she's certainly troll donald trump there with that tweet. why is trump failing to commit to this debate with kamala harris? >> look, i mean, there's a number of things happening behind the scenes, but their official statement is that there's still so much chaos happening within the democratic party. but look as you said, sara, they are refusing donald trump and his team refusing to commit to another debate with kamala harris of course, as you mentioned, they had agreed months ago to two debates. the first of which of course was on june 27 with cnn and set off that distinct chain of events that led to biden ending his campaign. and harris now becoming the likely democratic nominee. but they also agreed two months ago, this september 10 debate eight, with abc news. now, i think we all know we've watched this over the last several days that within 48
4:07 am
hours of biting ending his campaign, kamala harris has seen a surge of support from democratic fundraising, enthusiasm on the ground. and of course, with high level endorsements from essentially every democratic leader, the last holdout was really the obamas and we saw that as kayla just laid out, i want to read for you some of what steven chung, one of donald trump's top advisers said in this statement, he said, quote given the political, given the continued political chaos surrounding crooked joe biden and the democrat party general election debate details cannot be finalized until democrats formally decide i'd on their nominee, it went on to say it would be inappropriate to schedule things with harris because democrats very well could still change their minds. now, again, there are saying this, despite it being very clear that harris does seem like likely person he is going to face off in the fall. now, trump himself actually address this with reporters earlier this week, he said that he agreed to a debate with joe biden, not with harris, but
4:08 am
also argued he still wants to debate. take a listen to what he said i haven't agreed to anything. i agreed to a debate with joe biden but i want to debate her and she'll be no different because they have the same policies. i think debating's important for a presidential race. i really do. i think that you have to give, you sort of have an obligation to debate now, just to give you some sense of what i'm hearing from trump's advisers. they do tell me that they believe there will be another debate that they do want donald trump to debate. of course, they are far less eager now than they were with joe biden and having donald trump face off an entirely new opponent. but right now when i talk to them, there really in a weight and see moment. and of course this is a departure from what they had committed to in the past and i should be clear that donald trump was not the official nominee when he debated joe biden. >> so it's an interesting and interesting reason given for not wanting to make kamala harris. all right, we will see what happens. debate will
4:09 am
probably happen. we hope. all right. >> alayna treene. thank you so much. i'm going to toss it over myself. breaking overnight, criminal sabotage, widespread coordinated attacks on francis train system you know that opening statements for the olympics is supposed to happen today. it is causing chaos. also, police in california have arrested a man they say started this raging wild the fire that you're seeing there behind me by pushing a burning car into a canyon so far 160,000 acres have burned and an eight-day mission has turned into a 50 days staycation for two astronauts stuck in space and there is still no date set for them too. turn we'll talk about all that and more coming up tomorrow on the whole story, political violence has always threatened our democracy the attempt on trump's life, where does america go from here? the whole story with anderson cooper, political violence. america bloody history tomorrow

4:15 am
across the country. they cut cables they use arson to take out installations that would essentially cripple france's rail network pretty effectively. >> it turns out this is a gamble paleness, one of paris's main train stations are born just closing it down right now and warning people that they're probably not gonna be able to travel until monday now, it isn't just the many, tens of thousands of people who are coping to get into paris for the opening ceremony and to be here to sort of soak up the vibe of the city. it is also the many, hundreds of thousands of french people and their families who were hoping to get out of the country around the country for their star, their summer holidays so a great deal of disruption. again, paris 2024, had thought they'd planned for everything. but this level of chaos, of course, very difficult to prevent. we don't know who's behind it. we have heard from an intelligence source here, john in france. he says that it is the tactics that have reduced by the far left before, although there is nothing to link them to this particular series of sabotage acts. again, across the country
4:16 am
that have achieved their aim of crippling france's renton rail networks just hours ahead of the opening ceremony, what the rand authorities are warning now, it is it is is that 800,000 travelers are likely to be impacted? acted over the course of the weekend. so whilst paris 2024, organizers felt they'd prepared for everything, they're really facing a great deal of chaos even as they attempt to keep paris safe for the ceremony and the events beyond john no one hurt at this point in any of these for the time being. we don't believe anybody has been hurt. these are attacks that happened at 4:00 a.m. again, arson, cable theft at targeted at installations, signal boxes to cripple the network, no one appears to have been hurt, but of course, what's happening across france now is workers are desperately trying to fix those train lines in order to get the country going again, this will impact of course the summer games that begin here in paris tonight. but of course, they traveled plans have hundreds of thousands in an outside i'd france people

4:21 am
really happened. the atlanta olympic bombing premieres tomorrow at nine on cnn breaking overnight, they got him, us authorities say they have captured two mexican drug kingpins, including former cartel boss el chapo's son. >> the two were arrested. the u.s. after evading law enforcement for decades officials say, it's mile zambada known as el mayo, a mile. and joaquin guzman lopez, the son of el chapo, were taken into custody after boarding a plane under the pretense of inspecting a property in mexico when they got surprise of their lives. let's get straight to cnn's polo sandoval with the details so what happened? they got them on this plane and then so we can't overstate this enough. this is a massive victory for the u.s. government. sara, you have one of the most wanted cartel bosses, at least wanted by the federal government a multimillion dollar price on his head who together with joaquin guzman, we all know him as el chapo he found actually established the sinaloa cartel
4:22 am
was essentially tricked to fly into the waiting arms of us law enforcement. it really reads out of a narcos episode, but it's reality here. a little bit about his mile somebody who's known by authorities as myo, he oversaw according to federal prosecutors the manufacturing and the distribution of narcotics going all the way back to 1989 and up until this year, according to federal prosecutors of mio, in his mid 70s, this is an old school kind of cartel boss, right? he keeps, he kept a low profile, unlike his partner, probably one of the reasons why up until now, he hadn't actually that foot in a cell. in fact, it's very difficult even finding recent photographs of this individual. but some of those pictures that you just saw, a short while ago, those were actually taken not far from el paso, about 20 miles away from el paso, according to what i've heard as well as some of my other colleagues heard from some of those investigators. still sources close to the investigation. he stepped the board this airplane yesterday under false pretenses that it would be flying to see a property potentially to buy
4:23 am
it and he had no idea that this plane would eventually land near el paso, where us authorities were waiting. as you can see in that footage, you see some of those federal investigators on the ground, even actually attach a chain propeller of the plane that is believed to have been the one that actually flew el mayo, as well as booking guzman lopez, one of chapo's son, who is accused of also running the sinaloa crime syndicate. while his whereabouts of miles whereabouts are still unclear. i can tell you, sara, that a us doj aircraft that's frequently used for extraditions as of fugitives and suspects traveled from el paso to the chicago area this morning. and that is important because the myo actually has an outstanding indictment, one of several there in that district. you one of the big questions. well, this actually reshaped the cartel landscape is the lowell cartel know more, you can tell you absolutely not if anything, i've seen in the past, this one leads to in fighting friction and a power struggle to fill a void. and what avoid this is especially for this
4:24 am
elder cartel boss that is now in us custody. and then the final and perhaps the most key question here, who actually betrayed him there is some reporting out there and several leads that we're following that suggested possibly was from within the sinaloa cartel syndicate but not yet ready to actually go there. finally, i do want you to hear directly from the u.s. attorney general that was ultimately the one who finally confirm this hours after we started hearing about this yesterday afternoon, about the significance of this arrest fentanyl is the deadliest drug threat. our country has ever faced. the justice department will not rest until every single cartel leader member and associate responsible for poisoning our communities is held accountable did you garland really sort of punctuating the significance of this because the sinaloa cartel, according to the da, is believed to provide it, or at least manufacturing distributed a majority of the fentanyl that
4:25 am
has ended up here in the united states killing many, many americans, thousands and thousands of americans. >> it is an incredible gas and it will be interesting to see what happens with the cartel. like you said, the infighting sometimes helps bring more people to justice as well. so we will say polo sandoval. thank you for your reporting. appreciate it all right. >> coming up next exclusive vice president harris should face no legal obstacles in getting on the ballot despite what you have been hearing from some republicans and a devastating wildfire in california exploding for night scorching an area larger than the city of chicago now police have a suspect in custody who they believe set that fire tomorrow on the whole story political violence has always threatened our democracy after the attempt on trump's life there does america go from here? >> the whole story with anderson cooper political violence america's bloody history tomorrow at 8:00 on cnn, a jane oh, wow, i getting,

4:30 am
edge, moments that shaped our culture coming this fall on cnn this morning is cnn exclusive, we've reached out to all 50 states and found that vice president kamala harris should have no problem getting on the ballots for november. >> now this kind of contradicts claims from house speaker mike johnson, who said there will be legal impediment that's some of the states there are impediments to just switching someone out like that. 14 million people went through the process and shows this nominee, joe biden, now a handful of people they've gotten together and decided he's no longer suitable. that's not how this system works. they are violating democratic principles and i think that's a real problem and i think there'll be a lot said about that in the days ahead. >> so cnn's chief legal affairs correspondent, paula reid, is with us. what is house speaker mike johnson need to know this morning. paula well, his office did not respond to
4:31 am
us when we reached out and asked exactly what he was referring to when he was speaking about these possible impediments so cnn, my colleagues, daniel dale case again and i, we reached out to all 50 states and ask election officials in those states if there is any potential problem with harris appearing on the ballot. >> now, 48 other 50 states did respond to us and said, no, there is no issue. let's take a listen to what some of these states said to us and how they playing, why there isn't really a quote impediment here. for example, in georgia, they said biden dropping out will not impact georgia's ballots as the democrats haven't had a convention, there is no nominee to replace. then for example, in west virginia the candidate that will appear on west virginia's ballot in november will be the candidate that is nominated by the dnc, presumably presuming that is kamala harris. then there will be no issues. now, two states did not respond. florida and montana, but experts say there's no indication there would be an issue there a reading of their rules it's
4:32 am
also gives no indication that there would be any litigation and i want to emphasize that this includes states that are considered swing states that had the closest margins in the last election, like georgia, arizona, wisconsin, pennsylvania, north carolina, michigan, and nevada, all indicating that there is no issue with harris appearing on the ballot as long as she's the one who is nominated at the convention but of course this doesn't mean that they won't file lawsuits because there is a potential political advantage to be gained by merely filing a lawsuit that helps to sow chaos and confusion. you can even fund raise off of a lawsuit even if you're not going to ultimately, when this point we know that trump ballot i certainly have discussed the potential legal implications of switching to harris. did this point it's unclear if there'll be challenges, but it appears for pretty clear john, from our reporting that on this issue, they would not be successful all right. >> great to see you this morning. thank you very much. also breaking this morning, the official endorsement from former president barak obama and michelle obama for vice
4:33 am
president kamala harris. they say, quote, she has the vision that character, and the strength that this critical moment demands with us. now cnn political commentator kristen soltis anderson, and democratic strategist, matt bennett and matt the facts of this endorsement aside, this sort of caps this week, this remarkable now, six days of a pretty tight rollout how do you see it having played out i mean, there's no way it could have gone better. >> it was very clear that the vice president's team was ready. they didn't know if the president would step aside. they had no idea and they didn't know when it would come. but the moment that it came, they just sprang into action and they roll hold it out in unbelievably perfect way. they made all the calls he need to make, they rounded up the endorsements they needed kind of closed off the field to others and then they put her out on the road and captured this incredible wave of momentum that followed this
4:34 am
sigh of relief that the party was giving that we now have a nominee that seems really capable of prosecuting the case against trump and i think what you're finding is that the trump team is definitely not ready. i mean, they have these ridiculous lawsuits. they're now saying they're not going to debate her. they're on their heels and defensive by j.d. vance project 2025. so things have gone really well so far. >> when it gets to the debate thing and just a moment of a kristen. first to you with the obamas, is there anything unique politically about their endorsement? i don't think this was unexpected, but does this endorsement carries something special? others have not well, i think one it was smart to actually delay it a few days. >> there's a little bit of online chatter. why hasn't obama endorsed, why hasn't obama endorsed? it's smart because it takes the story and it makes yet another day it gets to stand on its own as a story however, i do think that if democrats think that they are going to recreate the obama coalition this year, that is a bit of a big dream. but seems
4:35 am
unlikely to me remember barak obama won in part by being able to pull together this incredible coalition that included states like iowa. iowa voted for barak obama twice and i don't, i'm not encouraging anyone to go bet a bunch of money, but i wouldn't go to vegas right now and put a bunch of money on kamala harris winning iowa in 2024. so for some of these politicians like barak obama, who is very talented, the question is, how much does his coalition can it be rebuilt? in new, much more polarized times? and count me a little bit skeptical of that. >> matt brought up the debates in kristen, i want to give this question to you because this has been such an unprecedented week. i've been surprised by a lot of things big and small. what a small things i've been surprised by how much republicans have focused on the process in the democratic party, in the debates, just one aspect of it. we have this release from the trump campaign overnight backing off the debates, at least for now, that says given the continued political chaos surrounding crooked joe biden, the democratic party, that debates cannot be finalized until democrats formally decide on their nominee. they go on to
4:36 am
say there's a strong sense by many in the party name barack hussein obama. and then it goes on dot, dot, dot, dot, dot. they're not going to commit to debates. just yet. of course, obama then this morning goes out and endorses, but kristen, explain what does trump get out of this? what do they do? they get something out of this process argument well, it is not wrong to underscore how extremely unprecedented this is. >> i mean, democratic voters did not get the opportunity to really have a meaningful primary at the same time though the politics of this i assume it what they're trying to do is divide a democratic coalition that right now does not seem interested in being divided. democrats are pretty united around harris this week has been, again very unprecedented in the extent to which they've closed ranks i do think that republicans would be wise to have a message that's not about process, but is more about policy to focus their message more on voters discontentment with the economy, with immigration, with crime, with these issues where voters in polls that i see day in and day out tend to trust
4:37 am
republicans much more than democrats. the trump campaign will be much smarter to keep the focus on that versus trying to fight these process force. >> so matt on that front, one of the things that we have begun to hear are these attacks on vice president harris as a liberal tom cotton started here calling her san francisco liberal like five times and seven minutes this morning, we are seeing for the first time this super pac, which is now supporting harris, saying they're coming out with an ad, buy some $50 million. they're putting into this out. i want to play a little bit bit of it she's the district attorney who protected children from sexual predators she's the attorney general who stood up to the big banks to protect homeowner yes. so those two things i wanted to highlight that map because again, you got you start your career trying to kind of nudge the democrats or keep them in the center here, how much does harris have to worry about that in does this add get to it? >> well, look, the entire ball
4:38 am
game here is winning the center and the harris team absolutely knows that this is going to be a sprint to the general election where most voters have made up their minds already. the undecided voters tend to be centrists and moderates and independents. those are the people that are up for grabs and those that people she's got to get. so this is a really good add to focus on her tough as nails history as a prosecutor. and she's got to make clear to people that that's who she is. it's a very different game that she was in in 2020 and a field of 20 other or 19 other candidates running for democratic nomination. this is completely different and she's got three-and-a-half years in the white house. lots of experience to talk about what they have done together and what she wants to do going forward, making this about the future. and i think she has a real opportunity to do that matt bennett, kristen soltis anderson. >> great to see you both this morning. thanks so much. >> sara. >> this morning, california's park fire exploding in size. it has now burned more than
4:39 am
160,000 acres, an area bigger than all of chicago. it is still growing and it's just 3% contained. you can see in this time-lapse just how quickly the flames bread when the fire erupted wednesday, the flames torching the equivalent of 50 football fields a minute this morning, a suspect is under arrest for allegedly starting that fire. cnn's camila bernal is joining us from chico, california. i am looking behind you. goodness, you're close tell me what you're seeing yes. >> there we're seeing firsthand just how quickly these flames are spreading. if you take a look here, just a short time ago, these flames were not here, they were further down in the mountain. and so what you're seeing is the speed you're seeing, the smoke you're seeing the embers. again just minutes ago, we weren't seeing these thick smoke that we're seeing now. i want you to look at the embers actually over here and how quickly they can spread. and unfortunately, as you

mentioned, a 42-year-old man has been arrested for starting this fire or authorities saying that they have witnesses who saw him pushing a burning car about 60 feet. of course, that's what causes, according to authorities and they also say that there's people who saw this and they believe that this is what is causing now, this biggest fire in california, burning at the moment, it's 160,000 acres, more or less only 3% containment. and authorities also say there are structures that have been damaged. they do not have an official number yet, and they also are saying that at least three firefighters had to be treated for heat related injuries. excuse me? >> as you see, this smoke just moving in really, really fast and making it just so hard to breathe here. >> and that's probably some of what's happening to these firefighters as well who are working around the clock. we're talking about 1,000 firefighters who are here right

now. and another thing that's really important about this area yeah, this is butte county. this is also where california's sides deadliest fire in california history. so it is traumatic for a lot of the people that live here in chico, california. some of them who moved from paradise, california where that fire took place to chico and are now experiencing this all over again. there are mandatory evacuations it's in place. we saw officials yesterday helping people leave this area with their animals. so again, it's just extremely difficult for the people that live in this area and for all of california as we see these temperatures climbing and we expect three digit temperatures later on this today as well. sara, row, basically the whole town of paradise was destroyed and now people that have moved there now dealing with this again, but i do want you and your crew to be really careful, you know, how quickly these things spark up and there's flames just about all around you, please be safe out there with your crew wow, great pictures from you this morning. >> and just to let us know

becoming a homeowner is increasingly out of reach for many americans and 237 cities. a so-called starter home well now set you back at least $1 with us now cnn's mean a doors and making her cnn news central debut of the flagship morning show here at cnn. it's great to have you here 1 million bucks is kind of a lot. >> yeah. >> yeah, it's pretty bad and i think, you know, people can feel that around the country that this number has surged in the last five years. thank back in 2019, there were 84 cities where $1 million was the average starter home, which is bad, but now it's up to 237. so feeling more and more out of reach for people who are looking to get their first home. and this is a problem nationally, but it's really concentrated in these states. i mean, the usual suspects of california and new york, florida, and new jersey. these are the postal markets where there's less inventory, there's higher building regulations. those things drive up costs, but you can see that in these top five cities, the numbers have just nearly tripled in the last five years
4:51 am
of the homes that are starter homes, which is, you know, the lower third of the market things people could get into for their first purchase. really it's skyrocket getting since 2019. >> if you want to feel really bad, ask your parents at your grandparents what they paid know the first home, right? there's a big difference with 1 million bucks. the besides just availability. are there any reasons why the cost is so high? yeah. >> i mean, you know, in the last few years we've seen a number of factors drive up the real estate market. there's just the basic supply and demand. there's just limited numbers some homes on the market and a lot of people because the costs are higher, are looking for cheaper housing. so people who might've been buying something bigger or more expensive are now, they're all competing in the same pool for these starter homes. pandemic you know, people were working from home. they were looking for more space. so that drove up the market. a lot of people were buying homes because in the last four years and then the cost of getting into a home in general is more expensive you know, the feds been trying to fight inflation with hiking interest rates. so mortgages are a lot more costly for people these days this has all contributed to 76% of
4:52 am
people do not think it's a good time to buy a home. very low enthusiasm out there for homeownership these days. but i think there are some signs of positivity out there. the market itself is becoming a little bit looser. there's more listings on the market this summer than there were last summer. there's, you know, that's a that's a big jump almost 24% more listings this summer. so it should soften up a little bit, but i think for the average person who is out there trying to buy something, it's not, not feeling great, little bit of good news needed good news, right need to understand great to have you here. >> we have you and me emmy-nominated music take here on cnn news central. what he did, sarah. >> thank you, john, vice president kamala harris has run for the presidency as sparking a boost in the number of people registering to vote. news of president biden stepping aside and endorsing harris earlier this week immediately drove thousands of people bull to register to vote in the 48 hours after the announcement,
4:53 am
nearly 40,000 new voters flocked to non-partisan voter registration site vote.org flash forward to today. that number has now surpassed 100,000. since biden's announcement on sunday under a haley joins me now, she is the ceo of vote.org. thank you so much for coming on this morning in your experience, what will this sort of surge in the people coming to register to vote actually translates? into votes this november yes, at vote.org, we are the largest nonpartisan registration organization in the country, and we see usually an 81% conversion rate from registration to the ballot box. >> we're continuously communicating with voters to make sure that after they registered, they show up to vote so i really do believe that these registrations will convert in the voters i want to talk about something that you pointed out that 83% of new registrations since biden's
4:54 am
announcement, that he was dropping out of the race were there's a number there were younger voters how critical do you think engaging this demographic is? >> this particular time around knowing that in the past it is older voters that tend to go to the polls more than younger voters. >> i think when young voters show up, it can be outcome determinative. so i think this is really important sign. and even more important than just one election on ramping the next next-generation into our democracy is important. for the united states of america overall, it's really exciting to see this high of engagement, this early in the election cycle and to see that all of a sudden people are really clicking in. and i think this younger generation ration is showing up to vote you wrote an opinion piece about anti democratic forces getting more creative with their attempts to try and suppress the vote. >> what did you mean by that i think that we have a wave of
4:55 am
anti-democratic forces in the country. >> we have two types of people now, those who believe in free and fair elections, and those who want some other style of government and i believe that we are seeing increases in misinformation, disinformation suppressing the vote before people even go to the polls. so now people are getting messages of why does my vote matter? why should i care? and people instead of messages of, let's celebrate our democracy. let's make sure that we all turn out to vote and staying civic and stay civically engaged. so i think that people are getting more creative and trying to kind of say that people it doesn't matter when they know that the vote absolutely matters at the end of the day for what happens in your local community and your state and at the federal level. >> how can voters protect himself from what should they do to ensure that their vote is actually counted? >> i think what voters can do is make sure that you make a plan to vote it's just like anything else you need to plan it out so you can go to vote.org. we have information on all 50 states and what you need to participate and when
4:56 am
you make your plan early, that way that if something happens, you don't get washed out of the process make sure that once you have your plan to vote, you go out and you get your friends to register to vote be the vote captain of your own life, and get everyone to know that you know, friends, family involved, and make sure you go to the polls altogether. and i think that's what you can do at the end of the day. none of us can show up to safeguard our democracy alone. we need to really create community around it and to do that, we need to register to vote, make sure you get your own house in order, and then go out and help everybody else to also make it to the polls, right? >> andrea haley, the ceo of vote.org. thank you so much for coming on and talking through that with us thank you. all right. this just in that is brand new video of snoop dogg noted endurance athlete carrying the olympic torch in paris right there. oh, that is a jog he is in full jog mode

4:58 am
boeing starliner spacecraft during this first crewed test flight, you'll remember john on the issues were with two things, helium leaks and then problems with thrusters failing. nasa and boeing now say that while these astronauts have been up at the international space station, they've been conducting tests here on earth and they've been able to recreate the problems with the thrusters here on earth and that is what led them to believe kyiv that they have indeed found the root cause of what caused those thruster failures and what it is is they believe that too much heat built up inside those thrusters causing the seals. a seal that propellant in to bolt and so that seems to be the root cause. they're getting closer to getting to a point where they feel comfortable to allow those astronauts to come home on that spacecraft. but yesterday, a top nasa manager, steve stich was asked point blank. can you say definitively that this starliner spacecraft is the one that is going to take nasa astronauts butch
4:59 am
wilmore and sunny williams home. here's what he said focus today, as mark said, is mark and i have been working for the last number of weeks. >> it is to return butch and sunny on starliner i think we're starting to close in on those final pieces. the flight rationale to make sure that we can come home safely and that's our primary focus right now. we have contingency options. we put those in play. nasa always has contingency options we know a little bit of what those are and we haven't worked on a whole bunch, but we kind of know what those are and so you hear steve, they're talking about the contingency plans, right there are backup plans to get these astronauts back to earth if they can't go on the starliner spacecraft and those tangency plans would be something like the russian soyuz spacecraft or more likely spacex's dragon capsule, which is also docked up at the iss. >> so those are the contingency
5:00 am
plans, but nasa right now, staying very focused on trying to get those astronauts back on starliner. and then just kind of reading between the tea leaves, john, while they did not give an exact date what happens next is they're going to have to do a few more tests, few more tests about the iss, and then they're going to have to do a full nasa agency review to determine if this spacecraft is safe. to bring these astronauts back. if that goes well, that means we're looking at early to mid august at the earliest, john, i guess it's not exactly lost in space, but maybe stuck in space. kristin fisher. thank you so much. new hour of cnn, new central with emmy award winning music starts right now big news this morning, the obama that's are backing kamala harris. >> what this critical endorsement means for the vice president as her campaign just keeps gaining momentum. and
