events planned with surrogates in critical battlegrounds like pennsylvania, north with carolina and georgia. >> and certainly all eyes are going to be on the next few weeks as the campaign expects to select the running mate for vice president harris by august 7 there's the convention and then of course, there's the home stretch of the race we are also hearing from harris on twitter or she's sort of troll donald trump's saying, hey, what about whenever however to the debate it sounds like he is backpedaling. >> what do you know there? >> well, certainly i know that the former president likes to do things on his own terms, and he's thrives on an audience which there had not planned to be at this, at this particular debate. and he also had been seeking to have some of the mics opened or longer answers. so certainly there could be an opportunity for him to use this to reopen the conversation about the terms and then if the terms do not change, then try to reopen the conversation on

the timing the trump campaign has it's been non committal at best to most of these events. and harris was trying to seize that moment and sees that spotlight yesterday, she walked up to a group of reporters while she he was doing some travel of her own and walked up to them and said that donald trump was back pedaling, that she was ready to go. of course, we'll see if after that critical endorsement from former president obama changes things because on social media, trump had said that that was one of the reasons that's why he wasn't planning to participate or hadn't at least committed sara. >> a curious reason that it's now gone away because he, obama is clearly backing kamala harris kayla tausche. thank you so much for your reporting. john, let's get more on the off again debate season with us now, alayna treene, alayna, what are you hearing from the trump side of things on the debates? well, look, i it's very clear that they're being non-committal and this is a departure for the trump campaign and donald trump himself, because of course months ago, they had committed to two debates. the first of which of course, was on june 27, with cnn and set off a

chain of events that ultimately ended with biden ending his campaign over the weekend now harris, seeming like the most likely person to become the democratic presidential nominee, but they also had agreed to a september 10 debate hosted by abc. but yesterday we heard from donald trump's senior advisers and now they're saying actually, wait a minute, we agreed to debate joe biden. we want to hit pause and see how this plays out. i'm going to read for you some of what steven chung, one of donald trump's top advisers said in a statement, he said, quote, given the continued political chaos surrounding crooked joe biden and the democrat party general election debate details cannot be finalized until democrats formally decide on their nominee. it would be inappropriate to schedule well things with harris because democrats very well could still change their minds. now i want to point out a couple of things here. john. one is that i think it's very clear within the first 48 hours of biden ending his campaign, we saw a massive surge of democratic enthusiasm

for harris. you've seen several of the top democratic leaders endorser, including as kayla just laid out, the obamas endorsement, a very crucial endorsement now, so that's part of, i think it's and she's already received enough of the votes to make it clear that she could have the delegates and everything lined up to receive what she needs to become the democratic nominee. the other part of this though, is that in that first june 27 debate between trump and joe biden, neither of them at that point had become the actual nominee. of course, they were the presumptive republican and democratic nominees, but they had not been through the conventions or anything like that. so there's a little bit of irony here, and i also just want to point your attention what we've heard from trump himself say he spoke with reporters on tuesday and essentially said he does want to debate, but pointed out that he never agreed to do any debate with anyone other than joe biden. take a listen. >> i haven't agreed to anything. i agree to a debate

with joe biden, but i want to debate her and she'll be no different because they have the same policies. i think debating's important for a presidential race. i really do. i think that you have to give you sort of have an obligation to debate now, when i talked donald trump's advisors about this, they do say that they anticipate that there will be a debate. but of course, this posturing is very different from what we had heard before. and as harris's team themselves have pointed out, which is that he had been very eagerly seeking a debate anytime anyplace with joe biden that tonight it's changed a bit now that it might be harris, he faces off with john when a treene. >> thank you very much, sara. >> all right. joining us now, former strategic communications director for the trump 2020 campaign. marc lotter, and also with us cnn political comedy taylor paul begala, paul, i'm going to start with you there is a surge. we're learning in voter registration since harris began running for president, but it has only been a few days. what? is the key for her

in the campaign to keep her momentum going well, it's just that, her. i mean, she's got to build on that. she's gone to democrats back in the game you know, joe biden was hemorrhaging young people, black voters, hispanic voters, the heart, the base of the democratic party kamala harris is getting them all back in hours in hours, not not weeks or months. that's terrific. that is necessary, but not sufficient she's going to have to reach out to those suburban swing voters who biden was pretty strong with two older white voters who biden was very strong with. >> and she's not. so, she's got to end by the way, she's going to sustain the most vicious attacks there already like attacking her for being a step mom, which i think is really vicious and sick, but they're going to go after her in every way that they can say she's going to she's better be ready for it. i think she's going to be i think so far she has shown amazing strength poise and real political genius in moving to take this nomination so quickly.

>> there have been marked some really vicious attacks that are massage anniston calling her a cat. let's are a childless cat lady? and questioning whether women who do not have children have should have a limited or more limited ability to take part and making pelosi. and then there was a really disturbing attack on her which was extremely sexist. and then you have all the dea idea, dei comments coming from even some members of congress. what do you do with this is this is going to hurt republicans and hurt donald trump's chances. do you think i think you just have to keep pointing out that kamala harris is the most far left senator of the senate before she became vice president, she was even more to the left than self-proclaimed socialist bernie sanders when you highlight her policies on the issues, whether it's a ban against fracking, whether it is allowing medicare to to illegal

immigrants, whether it's a 70% tax rate or suspending the filibuster to pass the green new deal. >> those are out of step with, with most of the american people. then add on top of the fact that she owns joe biden's failed border policies, his failed economy. people can't afford gas and groceries and it all adds up so the fact that a kamala harris lead ticket is bad for american families and bad for american pocketbooks. >> he had the speaker of the house, mike johnson had said, look, do what you have just done, which is keep to the policy that she's been talking about, are involved with and not going after the person, but that isn't exactly what has been happening here. paula, i do want to ask you about some of these conference calls that have happened. there have been some huge conference call well, it's 44,000 black women, 53,000 black men getting on calls as soon as they heard that kamala harris was going to be at the top of the ticket and the presumptive nominee he and then you had this huge call of more than 100,000 white women. i want to listen to just a

little bit of what was said on that call when it comes to kamala harris, listen white women. >> this is our opportunity to show up not only for ourselves, but for black women. they've given us the whole playbook on how to show up and energize and beat organized. >> i'm just really grateful that us women are going to have a voice and we've always made our voices heard and now it's time to just get extra loud interesting white women. >> i mean, here we are. i have to admit when i was writing stuff down, i was like karen's for common-law. i don't know that was that was kind of funny. anyway, sorry paul, what do you make of these conference calls and what it says about her again, her momentum and the interest in having calmly at the top of the ticket you know, i've been in a lot of campaigns, but i've only been in one or two that became movement and that was bill

clinton, barak obama, and they won. this is looking like a movement is a movement. >> it's organic. of course some of it is top-down and orchestrated as thrilled to see the obamas and the clintons endorse the vice president. >> but so much of this is just organic i talked to my kids about tiktok and there are young people, but they're not being coordinated by central command of producing hilarious, biting effective commentary. >> i think this is what has trump so scared you know voters are like that. i kids are horses. they could just smell fear in this guy stinks, he reeks a fear. his panic stricken. he's, that's why he's crawfish and out of the debate. >> i mean, when you're 78 matters shape the moonwalk is really not a good look for you and so i think that he just doesn't know what to do it's a movement like this. >> and that kamala harris has got to keep building on it. she got to keep reaching out, keep going. she got to go to rural and urban areas where democrats didn't use to go. and i think

that's her next step and i think it's probably what she'll do. >> paul, you always have a zinger that i have to like really hold my time there. mark, i do want to ask you what did you buy i know you're always trying to get garrett trying to get us to break mark i do. want. to, ask you what advice would you give to donald trump there is a question about whether he is going to debate kamala harris. what advice would you give to him? to try and slow her momentum well, i don't think there's any question whether donald trump is going to debate kamala harris. >> i mean, a week ago, he was the kamala harris was demanding a debate with j.d. vance and the campaign said, what? well, wait a minute, you're not even the vp nominee yet. and here we are a week later, she's not the vp nominee, so look, we know the democrat party if her polls don't continue to hold up or get better, they'll cast her aside just like they did joe biden. so let's wait till she's actually the nominee and then actually go out and debate. but i think going back to that earlier point, you

first summer olympics where the opening ceremony is not in a stadium, it's going to be on the son river all focus was here a tens of thousands of military and police officers says, the streets are completely closed. now, there's about 100 cops for every pedestrian they were fortifying that area. and then of course, in the middle of the night, the day before a sabotage, your we don't know who did it. ministers from france are suggesting domestic in the sense of maybe politically motivated. but it was done for pure disruption because it wasn't know. no one it wasn't done at a time when anyone could get hurt. it it's meant to make a point and to keep people from coming together for what are supposed to be a great event. and that includes is you reported, the athletes. >> so julia, you said expected, i guess my question is, why is anything unexpected before an event this big with this much security preparation so it wasn't that it was not look,

up, i may not even look, i'm sorry, soon as i was like finagle back to sleep, i've got a call oh, it was like a random number. i didn't know who it was, but i answered it. and that's when they said your mother has been shot and he came our nic i mean, it went to her. i came on her neck and they were saying somebody that's all i don't know why they kept it was somebody cider and i said who they just made one tell me who i'm like who, and they just say as somebody, then next thing you know, i get up i wasn't even thinking. i just i was like i got to get some my grandma house and then i told my grandma what happened and she was in disbelief. just like me, i didn't want to believe it and then we didn't find out that it was a police officer until a day after two. that's the theme. >> so we just left clueless,

honest what do you, what do you think should happen to the officer? >> i know that you have told me that you have not watched the video which is so would be so traumatic for you. so that's a good thing. but what do you think should happen to the officer who took your mother's life he should he should mean honestly he need like like some because there's no way is no way in world that's what happened to my mother. he should have anything like that that doesn't wind down its no way. >> no. how he doesn't he doesn't even he doesn't he didn't care from the beginning didn't hear from the beginning because i watched one clip, but like the first part of and he just had an overdose from my mother, so we need to have no regard you have lockdown longest possible you even know

citizens of color who said that this officer engaged in excessive force against them so it begs the question what malachy is grandfather said? why was he even on the sheriff's department in the first place? why was he hired will fall in the red flags? that he should not have been a person who could interact with the public with this gut and badge malachy, can i ask you what you thought of the fact on the video? it shows that he didn't render aid either and discouraged his fellow officer from rendering aid to your mom as well. >> what do you make of that when i heard that that was i didn't crazy to me how are you

posed to be a police officer and you shoot someone? >> i've seen videos before of like this happening and they give them first aid right after it happens. why i don't understand why he would do it that i can't believe like why why that's the question sara it's so inhumane without remorse this video reminds people about the video four years ago with george florida lack of fuel manatee, and how that gavin as people to take action and go vote. >> and we think that sonya massey's tragic video on gavin ask people in our community to act she needed a helping hand, not a bullet to her face and malachy his sister summit. we have the eu who's solid mace's words are rebuke you in the name of jesus until we get

groups. and now this capstone with a president and michelle obama, it is just been an incredible week and i think the strength of her campaign, the strength of her vision is going to grow in the next hundred days till we get to the election. >> not everyone is on the honeymoon that you think might never end. congressman jared golden, a democrat from maine, just up the coast from you, said overnight that he has absolutely not committing to voting for harris. this according to axios, this morning and its going to wait and see but she puts forward and what her vision for the future of the country is now, now golden is from one of the toughest swing districts in the country his concerns may be what people are doing with harris now trying to label her as a san francisco liberal look, you're from massachusetts, massachusetts politicians always get labeled as massachusetts this is liberals. so how does harris fight back on that you know,

she's going to have to continue to do what she's been doing. >> kamala harris is a champion for people and, you know, we see ourselves in her but what's more important is she sees us and she has the solutions that people are looking for. she knows that people are struggling to pay for groceries. she understands the high cost of housing she sees the impacts of climate change with the wildfires and correspondingly, how difficult it is for people to afford an even get insurance for their home. these are issues with real impacts that are exactly the issues that she has been championing and when we look across at what donald trump is offering, the contrast is stark donald trump wants to make the winner's circle so small in

this country and it only as rome for his billionaire friends. he wants to dismantle reproductive freedom and continue this march to a national abortion band and that issue has won every single time it has been on the ballot because american families understand that these types of issues about if and when and how to have children should be up to them in consultation with their doctors that is why kamala harris's, you know bursting into the political scene has resonated across this country she has work to do. we know that. but she is going to be able to speak to the union worker to students, to communities of color in a profound way. she sees them and you been working her entire

even bigger. >> the park fire is now bigger than the city of chicago, more than 160,000 acres girls burned. cnn's camila bernal joins us now from chico in northern california, we can see the flames right behind you, camila yeah john, we're seeing just how quickly they're spreading because we've had to move multiple times to follow along with these flames, you obviously see that thick smoke here, the embers are flying and you also get to see the vegetation. >> it is extremely dry in this area and that of course, causes those flames brian. even faster. now, unfortunately, authorities are saying that a 42-year-old man was arrested for starting this fire. they say he pushed the burning car about 60 feet and authorities saying that people saw him push this burning car and then just leave. so again, just very it concerning in that sense, you

mentioned 100 160,000 acres, only 3% containment. so a lot of work to be done here we're seeing firefighters who are trying to clear some of the brush in this area, some of the grasses. and what we have been told is that about 1,000 firefighters are working gang around the clock here you see some of the fire coming up. this hill yesterday. we were able to see how quickly this same fire just crossed the canyon and got over to this side. and so again, that's prompting evacuation orders. we saw how local officials were helping people get out of this area and get their pets and your families out safe. we know of at least three firefighters that had to be treated for heat related injuries. they were released. but again just a lot of work to be done here. and unfortunately, we are in butte county, which is the area where a paradise essentially went up in flames and destroyed thousands of homes, killed at he five people that was the deadliest wildfire in california's history. and a
