monday, august 5, right now on cnn this morning, vice president harris set to wrap up her whirlwind search for a running mate in just a matter of hours, plus crazy kamala ultra-left, you know, that donald trump still hashing out how his campaign will attack kamala harris. >> and it's very bad for the republican party. he wouldn't do anything the former president rekindles his feud with a gop governor in a critical battle. >> hello, ground states all right. 5:00 a.m. here in washington, dc. this is a live look at tallahassee, florida rain pouring down as hurricane debby approaches the coast of
2:02 am
florida. this category one storm expected to make landfall any moment. now there we are going to continue to follow this throughout the morning. will have your forecasts for you coming up later on this hour. good morning, everyone. i'm kasie hunt. >> it's wonderful to have you with us. vice president kamala harris is search for her own running mate. now, in its final hours over the weekend, she interviewed three contenders at the naval observatory serve a tory in washington dc. they included minnesota governor tim walz, the pennsylvania governor, josh shapiro, and the arizona senator mark kelly. the process play out under strict secrecy with plans to officially announce the choice ahead of a tuesday night rally in philadelphia one of the options already facing scrutiny from the right and left, governor josh shapiro pennsylvania senator john fetterman, has been warning harris's team not to pick shapiro according to a politico report, fetterman reportedly told harris that shapiro is
2:03 am
more focused on personal ambition harris is republican rivals also attacking a potential shapiro pick i think if she picked shapiro, who happens to be jewish, she loses her little palestinian base because she has, because they like me because they think i'm going to bring peace to the middle east there's a lot of talk is going to be this guy, josh shapiro from pennsylvania, who you know, i've seen this a couple of clips of him talking. >> he talks like barack obama talks like barak obama joining me now to discuss all this, nic johnson, he's the publisher of axios and kadia goba. she political reporter at semafor. nick. i got to start with you on the undertake tokens there that we just heard. >> a company brock obama. >> yeah. i mean, i had i had read that the internet calls him veruca obama era reference to his jewish faith, but also he seems to be modeling himself on brock obama. but look big picture. >> this is a big decision. it's going to be the biggest decision harris has made so far for her presidential campaign.
2:04 am
shapiro had been seen as likely the front runner, but has really come under scrutiny here as we come into these final yeah, i think this is the moment where we see if all this good feeling begins to wear off. we talked a couple of weeks, so about the big momentum, the big mole, democrats were so happy with this or with not a lot of infighting. there was a lot of them do who's yaso? now this choice i think for vice president is that where the cracks start to show the fetterman comments about politico as far as some dissension there in the ranks, a unions are a little unhappy, which appear look at the whole race, come down to pennsylvania, right? it was florida in 2020, 2020, 24, it's pennsylvania. pennsylvania. pennsylvania shapiro could maybe move them needle on that. so i think he's the clear front runner now, but like when a choice is about to be made, folks who are unhappy with that will start to come out and would work. and that's i think the noise we're hearing here. i think the question is, how much does that really built that change this sense of enthusiasm? excitement about the democrats have with this ticket right now, or is that where the cracks, right? >> well, i mean, that might be the risk that she runs the nerves about shapiro might be in okay. we risking this excitement that we're feeling from democrats going that way. kadia goba, one of the other
2:05 am
things of course that harris is facing have been repeated criticism you're seeing from the right on immigration in particular, this is a place where there republicans feel they have an advantage over at where democrats stand generally. and then harris specifically has made some comments in the past that are coming under scrutiny. mark kelly, from a border state, from arizona, someone who has learned how to talk about this issue from frankly more conservative perspective than some of his other democratic colleagues in the senate or here in washington. i know you've been doing some reporting on harris is a positions here are some of the pressure she's facing from the left on this issue as well. how does this all play into the vp, sir? search you know in terms of the whole shapiro thing, knives are out, right? >> this is a very competitive position, so i'm not surprised to see a lot of attacks at the last hour. but you're right. all three of these candidates, the top three, which i keep hearing crop up. mark kelly,
2:06 am
senator cetera, market kelly josh shapiro and tim walz all have really good qualities. but at the same time, they all have disadvantages. and i think at this point i do have reporting to say that the campaign is really considering very seriously some of the criticisms around josh shapiro. it's not clear whether that's going to be a determining factor. it's really, really up an aide, but i do know that these the last the latest reporting is that shapiro and walls are the top runners yeah. >> well, nikki johnson, were reported here at cnn actually, my colleagues here that tim walz is kind of getting another look here. this is coming as mean. again, you mentioned there was this high right? now. we're kind of getting a chance to see it as thinking right? right. you've got this new doug emhoff, the second gentleman i acknowledge that had an affair during his first marriage. the dirt is flying
2:07 am
and then there's this question for harris about okay. who might, who might looking at vp wise, my colleagues reporting tim walz is getting another look. he's sort of got this midwestern dad like super clear cut five everybody likes wray was tim walz story when i was a hill reporter and he had just come to congress from the iraq war. i did a story about him joining been one of the freshman class. he hadn't the word it was office for pizza thank you. can't beat that. and i think there's a lot of worries about that. i think he's like really bubbling up a lot. look, everyone has a little bit of controversy in that. and i think that's where the real question is. if tim walz is certainly the front runner, we're gonna start digging through a bunch of his records, some of the stuff he's done as governor, some of the one bill he vetoed regarding uber in the state of minnesota, there will only be complaints about that, and i think how we navigate this, the first big test of the harris campaign yeah. >> it could kadia, the other of course, thing that we're following this morning is this new ap poll from cbs news. that really does show a reset of the race. there now, within one
2:08 am
point of each other according to this poll compared to biden, was five points behind trump. he at no point, biden at no point lead in these national polls. now, again, this is a national poll is not a swing state poll. there, of course, applying likely voter screen, we're at that phase in the race at the trump campaign is kinda complaining about. but this really does underscore the different environment that we're in now compared to where we were two weeks ago yeah. >> it's an incredible reset, but you're right. it's a national poll. but i would say when i talk to lawmakers, they say that all of those swing districts throughout the country that will determine whether or not republicans keep the house or flip the senate are all, they're also having a reset this is at a, is a really interesting time and republicans who felt really bullish about three weeks ago
2:09 am
on taking the senate and keeping the house, don't feel that way at all. when i spoke to them as early as last night yes. >> sure. >> nick, this was the big mole we talked about three weeks ago. like does this translate into numbered now we're seeing it translate in number is the lead story axios me hitting inbox probably in the next 35 minutes will be ending map democrats being much more excited about george, about north carolina, which has voted twice, i think for democrats. and so i think those we numbers that reset has happened. this is a different race now and i think the beck's nick and the next big inflection point in the next 24 hours is who that vp pick yeah. >> i mean, look, this conversation is totally different than the one we were having when biden after that debate, republicans suddenly wanted to talk about minnesota, new mexico, and all these places on the map for trump now, we've got the reverse going on, nick. thank you very much. kadia goba. thank you to you as well. >> all right. coming up next here on cnn this morning. debbie strengthens into a hurricane set make landfall looming off the coast of florida. we're going to bring you the forecast in the latest
2:10 am
this hour, plus is it disloyal guy? and he's a very average governor donald trump on the campaign stage repeatedly attacks i republicans, swing-state governor, and asia markets crashed japan saw its worst day since 1987, black monday it's escalating fears of a recession here in the u.s. >> we'll bring you the latest the sirens are going and bang. the tornado here. >> i'm thinking i'm going to die. >> and i thought that was it. >> violent earth wouldn't leon schreiber back-to-back? >> so it's saturday at nine on cnn. >> take a pea sized amount, apply it like a lotion pits under boob, thoughtful about cracks, feet. this water-based cream. i'm telling you it's invisible on the skin. it works like a dream. i didn't someone think of this sooner do not buy generic viagra until you check

2:15 am
asylum seekers now up in flames after rioters targeted the shelters. and what they say is a response to last week's southport stabbing were three children killed rioters falsely claimed the 17-year-old suspect is a migrant in a rally in an effort to rally anti-immigrant protests, officials say, the suspect was born in britain british prime minister keir starmer saying rioters will be met with the full force of the law people in this country have, a right to be safe and yet we've seen muslim communities targeted attacks on mosques. >> other minority communities singled out nazi salutes in the street. attacks on the police, wanton violence alongside racist rhetoric so no i won't
2:16 am
shy away from calling it what it is. far-right, thuggery are joining me now from london is cnn international anchor max foster. max, good morning to you. this is the worst unrest the country has seen in years at how are you looking at this as we're seeing law enforcement response? on while it just looks really out of control, i mean, we have to say these are very isolated incidents. >> they don't they're not representative of the wider community. is keir starmer was saying they're far right thugs, as he calls them really exploiting a situation to try to spread fear about asylum seekers, about muslims, about diversity effectively for the scenes are very dramatic and police in south yorkshire, where one of these hotels is that they've never seen violence like it. and in terms of numbers, they were really shocked about the amount of activists they were out and we
2:17 am
see a fire outside the hotel. i mean, they're literally trying to set fire to a hotel where asylum seekers, our house, and they have nowhere to go. and the one in war, rather room. there were 240 asylum-seekers inside. they had to be sneaked out of the back evacuated, from the hotel. and these are obviously some of the most vulnerable people in society that's how the class that's how they get asylum but it's getting out of control because it's spreading to more and more cities every day. and they've tapped into something here in terms of this one element, who have a very big voice max, what's the role that disinformation is playing here in terms of questions around this suspect and what people think is going on versus what's actually happening well, the misinformation you should was who he was and where he came from. >> and the reaction has been against muslims and asylum seekers. he wasn't an immigrant. the suspect in this case involving young girls who were stabbed. he was born in cardiff in wales and as far as
2:18 am
we know, we don't has been confirm that he was a muslim either because his parents are from miranda, which mainly christian country. so the misinformation was effectively that he was a muslim asylum seeker and therefore, people should go out and attack muslim asylum seekers it just, it's just got a voice of its own and the two other elements of this is that the rioters were attacking police he were who were seen as heroes on the day of that stabbing attack but also the mainstream media, which is this upside down world that we live in, where the mainstream media, calling out the misinformation and then the writers are attacking the mainstream media to try to get back to the full slides have been spreading on social all right. >> max foster for us this morning, max, very grateful to have you as always. thank you so much all right coming up next here, north korea, moving hundreds of nuclear capable missile launchers to the border

2:25 am
video coming out of fort myers beach, their case, he considering what they contended with back in september of 2022 with hurricane ian. ian still cleaning up after that now, getting submerged by more storm surge from a storm system that's well to its north and west. this is hurricane debby, latest 5:00 a.m. update state from the national hurricane center is in not quite making landfall just yet wins, holding steady, but the storm has definitely consolidated overnight. there's the eyewall. remember, it needs to be halfway over land for landfall to be called. so keaton beach, the steinhatchee region, the big bend. we call that basically the catcher's mitt of florida that is where that eyewall will make landfall here within the upcoming hours, there's a tornado threat on that right quadrant. you can see some of those bands moving through the central portions of the florida peninsula about the big story as the history books are written here with this particular storm will certainly be the potential of flash flooding from the storm. there's a lot but of moisture associated with debby. and you
2:26 am
can already see that in this radar accumulation, some areas approaching a foot of rain over the west coast of the florida peninsula. that's why those flash flood warnings in effect for that area. and then flash flood watches that's inclusive of southeastern georgia and portions of south carolina. they know what's coming. and this forecasts trend shows at all and why. let's take you through it. you can see the forecast track from the national hurricane center monday afternoon into south georgia. but then it re-emerges into the atlantic ocean, potentially re-intensify so fine, but not enough to become a significant windmaker. again, the rain is going to be the big threat here. notice the difference we've got a 48 hour time span between these two forecast points. and that storm system is still located over south carolina. that's why the flood threat will be so large because this is a slow mover i mean storm, the steering winds meant to push the storm away, just will not be there. we call that a collapsing steering
2:27 am
currents. and so some of our computer models pulling up words of 20 inches of rain between savannah and charleston, where that exactly plays out that's going to be determined, but that low coastal plain here, that's where we're concerned about the potential of historic flash flooding. and this could rival some of the largest rainfall totals from a tropical system for these states kasie. >> all right, our meteorologist, derek van dam for us this morning, derek, i'm sure you've got some busy days ahead. thank you very much. >> we do. >> all right. still ahead here on cnn this morning, even members of donald trump's party not safe from his wrath plus the latest polling showing this race common down to the wire much closer than it was when joe biden was atop the ticket this election season, stay with cnn, with more reporters on the ground. and the best political team in the business follow the voters, follow the results, follow the facts, follow. cnn ever worry

lobster is going away, your boy flavor flav said, not today. grab a boy and they got two flavors, roasted garlic and new cage and butter. when you got to have food good to have red lobster, i'm dr. sanjay gupta in atlanta. >> and this is cnn alright, just after five-thirty am here on the east coast, this is a look at the radar for hurricane debby currently sitting just off the coast of florida, the category one set to make landfall any moment now we're getting these images coming in from fanning springs, florida shows the intense rain, strong waves as many across the southeast he's bracing for possibly historic flooding. >> good morning, everyone. i'm kasie hunt. wonderful to have you with us this morning. we're going to bring you the latest on that hurricane throughout these upcoming hours. but we do want to get to politics. donald trump feuding with top republicans in a key swing state, the former president
2:33 am
going after georgia governor brian kemp and secretary of state brad raffensberger at a rally that he held in atlanta over the weekend you, governor kemp and raffensberger, they are doing everything possible to make 2024 difficult for republicans to win. camp it's very bad for the republican party. he wouldn't do anything. he could have ended the travesty with a phone call because i did nothing wrong which one won georgia? >> which one lost georgia? >> after losing the last election to president biden trump, of course, pressured brad raffensberger in that now infamous phone call to try to locate more votes as they tried to overturn the election so lucky, i want to do is this. i just want to find 11,000 11,780 votes, which is one more than we have because we won the state of course, he did not
2:34 am
win. georgia. now, kamala harris, the vice president, looking to take advantage of the rift, tried to win over swing voters get more african american voters out as well. >> she is launching republicans for harris, and this includes a lengthy list cross-party endorsement and that group is holding kickoff events today in several battleground states, arizona, north carolina, and in pennsylvania. among those, endorsing her former georgia lieutenant governor geoff duncan. he joins me now. jeff, always wonderful to have you. and of course, you were very much involved and present for and witnessed what happened with donald trump in the state of georgia eu also of course, worked very closely with republican governor brian kemp, who again, one in georgia, and has proven that republicans can win statewide in georgia, where donald trump, of course, lost your reaction to donald trump renewing his attacks on these two men, your former colleagues over the weekend?
2:35 am
>> i, couldn't help, but think when donald trump was saying in his speech, if brian kemp would have just taken a phone call, what he really means is it brian kemp would have just committed a felony. everything would have been okay that's really what donald trump's trying to say. the real story here is what republican leadership has done in georgia over the last eight years, almost eight years? and really seen republican principles and policies really working grow the economy into continue to improve education. it had nothing to do with donald trump but look, this is his game. he walks down the street, he finds somebody the sucker punch. so he looks big. he looked strong. and the problem is now really shifted to the republican party because they sit there and chairman from the other side of the street, instead of doing something about it, it's almost like they're more addicted to the blood sport than they are the actual party so jeff, one of the other things we've seen kind of unspool here with donald trump is the way in which he has been attacking kamala harris and we saw of course him questioning
2:36 am
her identity in a way that was very offensive to many voters, especially of color, at the end nabj event that unfolded last week, senator lindsey graham was on the sunday shows over the weekend. he was asked about whether this was the right way to go about things. i want to show you what he said and then we'll talk about it and take a look. but here's what i would say to president trump. the problem i have a kamala harris is not her heritage, is her judgment. >> she has been wrong about everything every day we're talking about her heritage and not her terrible, dangerous, liberal record throughout her entire political life is a good day for her and a bad day for us president trump to prosecute the case against kamala harris is bad judgment can you just kind of explain how you think about about this? >> because i mean, graham,
2:37 am
they're saying, look, every day we're talking about this, we are losing essentially and if you think about what kamala harris yes, we need to do to win georgia over donald trump. it's twofold, right? it's winning over people like you, suburban, especially moms who are uncomfortable with trump. it's also energizing black voters in atlanta, especially. and this line of attack from donald trump, it seems to me potentially does some damage there, but i'm curious as to what your assessment of it is donald trump could not be more self-destructive, obviously over his career, but especially the last couple of weeks. >> i mean, it's almost like this guy wakes up trying to lose this race watching the things he's doing, the things he's saying. but, you know, when i listened to that statement by lindsey graham, i can't help but think that's the problem. it's lindsey graham and all these other republicans. it just kind of like, well, maybe he shouldn't be doing this. no column out. he should not be doing this. and you don't endorse him in, even though, you know, look, i'm playing a bank shot here. i'm supporting a democrat even
2:38 am
though i'm a lifelong run republican, because i want to restructure the company. i want to rebuild the republican party because you cannot just walk into these statements and just kind of one-off. well, maybe he shouldn't do that, maybe shouldn't say that what he's doing is being racist by picking on somebody's heritage, right? if you did that in any business across america, that's what it would be called. but yet we keep given a hall pass after hall pass after hall pass, there's no policy kamala harris is going to support or pass. that's going to be more destructive than donald trump's tongue and is threat to democracy? >> all right. geoff duncan, i always appreciate kind of the way you look at things and having your perspective on the show. thank you so much for being here have a great day. all right. >> while donald trump is reigniting old feuds in the republican party, kamala harris is closing the polling gap. the most recent cnn poll of polls shows a virtual dead heat in the national race with harris, two points behind trump, it is
2:39 am
closer than where biden was when he left the race two weeks ago. and in those battleground states, we see of course no clear leader that's the par lens that we use. here in the most recent cbs news yougov statistical model, seven states are tied or within the margin of error. again, the point here, this is closer than it was when joe biden was at the top of the ticket. there are also signs of harris's campaign, closing the enthusiasm gap with republicans since the last poll before biden exited the race. there's been a four-point rise in registered democrats who now say they will definitely vote while that same measure for republicans has dropped by two points. joining me now, julie manchester, she is national political reporter for the hill. >> julia good morning. >> always wonderful to have you you have been looking at this polling broadly as well as the vp p selection race, how all that kind of plays together. the bottom line here we are seeing more and more evidence of what you can sort of see and
2:40 am
feel anecdotally among democrats, how different is this race now? and also what risks are there for harris going forward as she is set to make what is going to be her most consequential decision so far? yeah. look, it is night and day with harris at the top of the ticket. i mean, you have the democratic base activated earlier this weekend or last weekend, we saw the harris campaign release a memo talking about the uptick in volunteers through these weekends of action the harris campaign has been doing really across the country. but what's interesting is that you have i've harris galvanizing enthusiasm not only in that blue wall that rust belt area pennsylvania, michigan, wisconsin, but also in the sun belt, i feel like under president biden he was at the top of the ticket. there was this feeling that in a state like georgia, the chances of him winning were much lower. but harris has been able to galvanize the younger, more diverse population egn within the sun belt. and i think that's coming across in the polls now in terms of the risk she faces going forward in
2:41 am
terms of the veepstakes, i think there's a number of risks. risks know democrat is going 100% happy with what other, whatever candidate cheat she chooses. but what's interesting is that in pennsylvania, we see it very tied. a lot of signs right now are pointing towards josh shapiro. he is someone who has won multiple times statewide and pennsylvania, so it'll be interesting to see whether he rallies in his home state with her tomorrow. >> yeah, for sure. >> to your first 0.1 of the things we're seeing, we can put up on the screen how black voters have shifted with harris at the top of the ticket as opposed to biden. so likely, black voters were with biden 73% with harris are with 81%. and then look at this. trump had 24% of black voters against biden excuse me, 18%. now, with harris, that's an inroad that as you say, could put different states on the map? >> absolutely. and i think you see it particularly in the sunbelt, like in georgia,
2:42 am
harris was there last week we saw trump there this weekend watching trump there this weekend though, was really fascinating because he said on friday that he was going to unleash hell on harris at that rally and he obviously criticized and attacked her and president biden, but he seemed to make the governor brian kemp trump the republican governor of that state sort of a target of his wrath. instead of talking about the economy, instead of talking about these issues in the markets, were there could be an argument where he could attack the administration on that and make inroads with some of these voters. but instead he's talking about that, talking about harris is race and ethnicity. that's likely not going to do anything to help him and with this group yeah. >> i mean, it's it's like who are you running again, right yeah. >> against the democrat. you run against your own party. >> let's dig into for a second to the question it's around shapiro because i know you've been doing some reporting there sort of my sense was, well, i should say, in the folks that i was talking to, there was a sense that shapiro was really
2:43 am
at the top and then now there have been these sort of attacks aimed essentially at undermining his, his selection. >> it does seem like there's a risk for them with progressive voters, with josh shapiro, why josh shapiro has been pretty vocal and outspoken about his views who's on the israel hamas war. and also he's worked with republicans and pennsylvania on the issue of school vouchers. so there's a couple of issues there. however, i would say that josh shapiro held the very similar view to the other candidates in this race on israel and hamas. and that war in fact, we saw senator mark kelly attend netanyahu's address two, congress a few weeks ago. so what this shows is that he's under a lot of scrutiny, i think first of all, because he's been outspoken, but also there's real questions about the fact that he is you know when observant jew he wears that on his sleeve and he talks about that. so there's questions about anti-semitism. but what's interesting, kasie, i was talking to one
2:44 am
progressive last week and i essentially we ask them, look, are voters going to stay home if she picks shapiro and he says, if this is against a trump versus vance, no. >> all right. julia manchester for us this morning, julia. thanks. thank you very much. >> all right. coming up next here on cnn this morning, hurricane debby bringing dangerous rainfall and wind as it slams into florida will have the latest plus american noah lyles can during gold and the title of world's fastest man in a dramatic photo-finish, show you all of that coming up next this is the home for the world's most essential stories in journalism and now, cnn has been recognized with the most emmy nomination actions of any news organization this year cnn watch this witness. >> what happens to this woman's bags under her eyes in an actual time-lapse in just minutes. the problem will disappear before your eyes with a revolutionary topical

2:50 am
looked at what happens when this tactic othering is used. we have seen it used in our politics, honestly, donald trump has been one of the most aggressive forces in engaging in this. he has done it in a much more blatant way than other politicians in the past. it started with barack obama and the birtherism accusations that trump really kind of ran with. what do you see going on here? how do you understand this and how should voters be thinking about what they're we're hearing from donald trump as he tries to do this with kamala harris well, first of all, voters should be appalled, but not surprised but makes donald trump particularly poisonous user of other ring is that he is the first top of the ticket in our presidential history to engage in this practice. >> we've seen in the past when the country is on the verge of
2:51 am
breaking or shattering a cultural or racial glass ceiling. we've seen othering that's basically allies of a presidential candidates saying that the opposing candidate is not like us they're alien, they are different in our history. races has been used in that way up. there were rumors spread by opponents of abraham lincoln that that abraham lincoln had black heritage similarly, many years later in 1920, opponents of warren g harding ultimately became president. that spread rumors that he had black hands history in the 20th century, for the most part, what you saw was the discussion of people's secret catholicism. that glass ceiling think the opportunity or the first, first catholic to become president became a source of division 1928 the democrats nominated a catholic, al smith. he doesn't win. but if you look at the language used to
2:52 am
describe why he shouldn't win, it wasn't about his policies, it was about his heritage the difference now is the top of the ticket is doing herbert hoover didn't talk about the fact that al smith would be beholden to the pope and the vatican some of his allies did certainly, but now we have the, we have the presidential candidate himself engaging in othering. and that's the big difference. think about john mccain jonathan mitchell to ask you exactly i'm flashing back to that. >> yeah. continue. i'm sorry the point think about john mccain. >> john mccain had allies who were othering brock obama. they were saying that brock obama was a secret muslim and john mccain actually faced a voter who said that an asked him about it. and instead of playing along he said, no, ma'am. now, some of the language he used gave the impression that being a muslim would be a problem. but the
2:53 am
thrust of what he was saying was no, ma'am. barack obama is who he says he is. i don't think he should be president because i disagree with his policies. but let's not talk about his heritage right. >> contrast that with donald trump. >> for sure. >> tim naftali, i'm sorry, we're so short on time this morning. i hope you come back. i think this is going to be a conversation we're going to have a kind of ongoing for the next few months till november. thank you so much. i really appreciate it. >> thank you. kasie all right. >> time now for sports, erica, noah lyles stakes, his claim as the fastest man in the world with a thrilling photo finish in the hundred meter dash. amanda davis joins us now with more from paris. amanda, good morning. >> good morning. america. america. i told you i got well, that was no isles with a shock to those who died doubted him, but my goodness, it was plos the doubles spread world champion adding olympic gold, his rally as me, he'd not been the fastest man this year. he'd not been the fastest on the day. he actually said he
