types of deaths, but in recent years from 2012 to 2019, we saw a 7% increase in the rate of people dying from stroke. this is among ages 45 to 64. and then there was an additional increase of 12th percent from the years 2019 to 2021. and this might be because we are seeing more middle aged adults with comorbidities, raising their risk of having a stroke like high blood pressure, like diabetes, and black adults are the most impacted here, kate, when you look at this age group of 45 to 64, the rate of dying from a stroke was about 133% higher among black adults than their white peers. now, i will say, if you see someone having a stroke, call 911 immediately, the quicker you respond, that's the more potential that there will be a recovery. the signs and symptoms to look out out for a sudden numbness in the face arm, or leg especially
5:01 am
on one side of the body, facial drooping confusion sudden lack of vision. these are all signs and symptoms to look out for always an important reminder. >> what to look out for and how quickly you need to act. it's good to see you, jacqueline. thank you so much. the new hour of cnn new central starts now you this morning in kamala harris campaign releasing a brand new campaign ad aimed at winning over latino voters. all while the trump campaign launching new lines of attack against tim walz questioning his military record and new details just in about the thwarted terror plot against taylor swift during her concerts overseas us officials we're able to stop all this from happening, but raising the alarm. and now at least three teenagers are being questioned and an exclusive interview with the former uvalde he school district police chief, pete or redondo, speaking out about the
5:02 am
botched response to that shooting saying he's become a scapegoat there were sider with kate baldwin, john berman is out today. this is cnn new central just in the next layer of the harris-walz campaign strategy coming into focus this morning? >> praying as the duo sun takes their battleground blitz out west, the newly minted democratic ticket is now turning their attention to latino voters and a new campaign ad released just this morning is zeroes in on harris is childhood her immigrant parents, and her rise to success when you're raised by an immigrant mother you learn what's possible with the termination and determination is how kamala harris went from working at mcdonald's to prosecutor state attorney general, us senator, and vice
5:03 am
president and just in only one generation. and with that same determination, gene always defendant so before heading to the next campaign stop, there is at least one more to make in michigan. >> and last night already in michigan, harris not only took the stage, but also took on some protesters during her rally as they shouted what appeared to be pro-palestinian messages at her. what does and intends to surrender our fight against the climate crisis. >> and he intends to end the affordable care act. >> you know what? if you want donald trump to win, then say that otherwise, i'm speaking the issues that plagued joe biden now coming to confront kamala harris on the campaign as well, joining us right now is cnn's isaac dovere. >> isaac harris and walz have been on the ticket together since tuesday, right? i mean,
5:04 am
so how have you already seen you have new reporting and how being together has already changing the campaign look for harris, she is still not very well known to a lot of people. she's been a presidential candidate for all of 17 days now, tim walz, as her pick, is the defining thing for tim walz, but it's also defining for her and how she is putting yourself forward and how she's putting this ticket forward for the country what she wants to do is talk about winning back voters who had drifted away from trump. that's what the tim walz pick is about in part, and it's also about saying that there is a different kind of energy that they want to be putting forward then what was true of biden and certainly what's true of donald trump and j.d vance. they're going for this sort of joyous air together. and if you look even on tuesday night at his debut in philadelphia, wall said to harris, thank you for bringing the joy back, and it's that celebratory aspect of the campaign that they think can
5:05 am
help power a lot of good feelings that could help them all the way through november and it also seems a way that they are trying at least right now to draw a contrast with what you're hearing and seeing from donald trump rallies and j.d. vance rallies as well in terms of, in terms of that, there's what there's talking about and there big focus on turning people out to the rallies. we also have new reporting on how they're trying you reach out to people who are not attending the rallies. what are you learning yeah. >> look at the ad that you showed in the beginning there as part of this rallies, are obviously something campaigns love when they're big and fulsome like those have been over the last few days. but this is about now trying to take this apparatus, which was built for joe biden which has now been pumped full of a lot of money and energy over the last two-and-a-half weeks from harris is takeover and build out these operations in states where they think that they can be competitive. again, arizona and nevada are states that had
5:06 am
been almost out of reach for joe biden, if not completely out of reach, that now we are seeing there our efforts that are underway to try to capitalize on movement there. we'll see how that continues over the course of the next few weeks absolutely. >> definitely one thing is for sure an undeniable when you talked about the campaign has been armed with a lot of new cash there's no question there that's for sure it's great to see isaac. thank you so much, sir. >> all right. let's bring in national political correspondent for politico mcgraw. her new book, trump in exile outright. now, thank you so much for joining us this morning. you just heard about this new ad that has been released, but trump has been able to siphon off some latino and black voters what does this tell you this new ad tell you from the harris walz campaign about how important these voting blocs are and where they are in this race to try and win some of these voters back well, the hispanic vote is going to be incredibly important in this 2024 election. >> it's the second largest ethnic group in the country,
5:07 am
but they certainly don't vote as a monolithic block, right? and the trump campaign over the years has been trying to siphon off a lot of latino votes in particular in the south and in texas and in florida and this this push by the harris campaign just shows how important they will be to them in the upcoming election. they're going out to the midwest. this new ad that they have out. and there has been real concern among democratic strategists about the dent that the trump campaign has been able to put in the hispanic vote, which has, for decades reliably votes but democrat i do want to ask you about this new attack line that we've heard first heard from j.d. vance, who is a veteran himself. he served for years but he attacked governor tim walz is military record walz served 24 years in the army national guard. what do you make of these attacks and
5:08 am
whether or not they will be effective when it comes to the voters, because both of these men are veterans right? >> they both serve this country and this is a new attack line from the trump campaign going after governor walz. but i will say it's not entirely new to walz. he is face these accusations before when he ran for governor, when he ran for congress but it does, there have been moments that the trump campaign is, has highlighted some republican allies have highlighted where they claim that walz has mixed mischaracterized his service or when he decided to retire from the national guard right before his unit was deployed to iraq. and the question is going to be how this registers with voters. now, i will note one of the top people on the trump campaign right now is chris lacivita, who is a longtime republican strategist who was one of the
5:09 am
masterminds behind the swift boat veterans for truth campaign against john kerry in 2004. and he's a veteran himself. and he made, he made clear in our story that we published last night, that this is we're going to be something that we're going to continue to see from the trump campaign, from republicans, is this questioning of walz's service, which the harris campaign has defended and walz has defended to what's also really interesting. there are other members who served with him who have come out and said he did nothing wrong. i may not like his politics, but he was a good soldier, so will be interesting to see how this fallout and also very interesting to note that you're certainly going to see an attack from the walz and harris campaign because donald trump avoided serving. so this is going to be a strange and interesting world that we go into as we go forward towards this election, which is in just

three months, meridith mcgraw. thank you so much for your reporting. appreciate it thanks for i'm going to go to k now, it's giving me to get into the studio. thank you, darling you're right. >> coming up for us. a cnn exclusive for the first time in two years the former uvalde school district police chief pete arredondo, is speaking publicly. he was just indicted for that botched response to the massacre at robb elementary country school. and he now says he's a scapegoat and new details on the terror threats that forced the cancellation of three taylor swift concerts in europe. >> and what we are now learning about the will-be united states played in stopping the alleged terror plot cnn is live from chicago as democrats unite to offer their support we're to a new nominee and her running mate fellow cnn for complete coverage, the democratic national convention starts monday, august 19 on cnn and streaming on max power outages could be unpredictable,

5:16 am
children and two teachers who were murdered inside a classroom of robb elementary in uvalde, texas have waited to hear from this man former school district police chief, pete arredondo. >> what do you say to those critics? and a lot of them are fellow law enforcement officer jurors who say, you guys didn't handle the situation properly. and many people who as tough as it might sound, consider you guys are cowards with the way you acted that day. >> i strongly disagree and again, opinions vary, sir. and they're going to but i can tell you that probably 100% of those people hadn't been this situation like that before. >> do you feel like you guys are being singled out scapegoated and by all means, since the very beginning, sir i've been scapegoated from the very beginning nearly 400 law enforcement agents responded to the robb elementary shooting scene on may 24, 2022. >> our redondo has now been charged criminally for his actions that day, facing multiple felony counts of child endangerment. he and his lawyer, paul looney, sat down
5:17 am
with cnn and spoke for more than an hour about the shooting. i keep thing thinking about what are the questions that the victims families would want to ask you. and i think ultimately it all boils down to is how come officers didn't go into that room sooner, right? >> right. >> what do you say to those families? if you look at the bodycam footage, there was no hesitation and myself from the first handful of officers that went in there and went straight towards the hot zone, as you may call it and took fire and then at that point, we worked with what we had the protocols of as i understand it, of active shooter training is you go after the gunman? >> when you focus on the gunman until he or she is taken out that didn't happen in this case why not we couldn't again, you can't see what's on the other side of a wall at that point, what you're supposed to get through that wall, right? right. you can't you you can't see through it. first of all, when we are shot at and we backed off to think, okay, now
5:18 am
we know where he's at because we didn't know where he was at. that's when we took fire and backed out and realized, okay, now we need to come up with a plan to get back up there. >> if i show you a couple of video clips, would you mind? i'd love just as we watched them, i'd love to get your perspective on what i'm sorry by rather than looking at video clip, sir, i just don't i just i just don't i've kept myself from that it's difficult for me to see that these are my children to people to understand that we went down the hallways every day and stressed about keeping doors locked, stressed about being vigilant and the last i see of those three, i don't have to the better for me what the body cam video clips that are a done deal refused to watch show. is that on that a day in the hallway at 12:09 p.m. he said he knew there were likely victims in the room with the gunman. >> seems extreme has ruled before we go very kind reaching or cyber election.
5:19 am
>> in that moment when lives were at stake, why did you think time was on your side? >> i don't recall making that statement. i'm sorry. there's some things that you don't recall what you're in the hallway as we've watched bodycam footage of what happened and how those 77 minutes unfolded inside robb elementary. you're on those tapes constantly giving orders to other officers before we before we do any reach redfield. the sense was is that those officers were deferring to you as the lead officer. so why shouldn't you bear the brunt of the responsibility of how all that unfolded? >> sure it's natural for me to give direction with what information you have while you're in there. >> again, limited information. was there on the inside police permission or don't do now claims there were state police officers from the texas department of public safety arrived after him, who should have set up an incident command
5:20 am
post and taken control of the scene. the guidebook tells you the incident commander does not stand a hallway and get shot at incident commander, someone that's not in the hot zone another location for friendlies nobody answered. do you think you made any mistakes that day again, it's hindsight. >> statement. you can think all day and second guess yourself. i know we did the best we could with what we had and by ran into that building and not leaving there and doing what we could are doing, what i could and with the other officers could. it was the best we could with a situation we have and kate, oregon to also feels like the officers who cleared out the surrounding classrooms of students that those actions saved lives. >> that afternoon inside of robb elementary, we also asked him if he had spoken to any of the victims families since may of 2022, he said he had not but his cousin's wife was one of
5:21 am
the teachers that was killed. we should also note that we have reached out to the texas department of public safety state troopers for reaction to his comments. we have not heard back from them. kate and thank you for your reporting and staying on top of this that's hard to hear. >> a lot of it. thank you very much have new details coming up on the terror plot to target taylor swift concerts, how the united states helped uncover and stopped an attack. and america needs a normal guy that is what one former republican is now saying as he is speaking out to say tim walz would be a good vp he pushing back against the new criticisms coming fast and furious from the trump campaign. now the edge moments that shaped our culture coming

ohio. >> senator j.d. vance and minnesota governor tim walz two veterans now buying for vice president and the scrutiny over their military records is just heating up vance stepping up his attacks against harris, his running mate, accusing walls of strategically leaving the national guard before his army national guard unit was deployed to iraq. here are the facts while served in the army national guard for 24 years before retiring in 2005 to launch a campaign for congress, months before his unit announced a potential deployment to iraq his unit was deployed two months after he retired, vance served for years in the marine corp as an enlisted combat correspondent though he says he did not see combat and deployed to iraq for roughly six months, according to his military record, he left service in september 2007 as a corporal for more insight on walz's record, i want to bring in charles, does you who served with tim walz in congress and is now endorsing him. and it
5:27 am
should be noted, you're republican and you are now endorsing tim walz, a democrat. you are a veteran what do you think of jd vance's attack on tim walz well, good morning. >> thanks for having me on that. let me get begin by just saying as he afghanistan war veteran, myself, i think tim walz gave 24 years of honorable service to our nation. that's something to be commended. as is senator vance's use a service in the marine corps when less than 1% of americans are stepping up and taking the oath of office to serve and are nation's military i think what ten tim walz done was honorable and good. and something that should be rewarded and recognized, and not, not criticized for it you as i mentioned, were republican who served with tim walz in congress. >> republicans are lambasting him for some of his policies, saying that he's a radical liberal how would you describe
5:28 am
your time serving with him? >> you know, i think the thing about tim walz that i want people to know and understand is whatever differences i are, republicans may have had with tim he's, you know, he's generally, generally a genuine nice guy. he's he's a normal man and i never knew him to be anything other than somebody who had a friendly smile, a warm handshake, and even if you disagreed with him, he was someone who was always very affable and friendly and having news in american politics today, we have more than enough showboat to spitting out its constant hyper-partisan vitriol, right now in american politics and endless streams of social media tweets tim walz i think is a refreshing just nice, normal guy. and right now, i think american politics that's where leads nice, normal, and that's, that's
5:29 am
tim walz and whatever the politics maybe whether i agreed or disagreed with him that's i think the salient point that he used a genuine, kind man that's something i think that's something that's good, commendable and what our country needs a policy-wise, did he reach across the aisle? >> was he someone that could be worked with a kind smile and a happy handshake, if you will, is one thing, but getting the business done is another how was he when it came to policy yeah. absolutely. you know there are lots of congress and come all shapes and colors. tim was is that they've individual who works with all people he's interested in making sure things get done for the american people. now i've always agreed with him necessarily. >> but i do indeed find it refreshing and rewarding that he was always comfortable working with republicans as well as with democrats. >> that for him, what was important was getting things
5:30 am
done for the american people, not getting things done for his political party. >> and once again, that's something that's something that's very short supply in american politics here today. and that's why i'm very excited to see tim walz selected as vice president. harris is running mate for this coming election. >> you recently reconnected with him, i think for a deep day of commemoration, what was that? what was that? like? what did you discuss? it was the 80th anniversary of d-day what is your takeaway yeah you know for me myself, i mean i've been out of elective politics now for a few years and tim, at the time, there was no consideration of him being a running mate there at the time, president biden was still democratic nominee. it's still very much in the race so there was no discussion about him joining a national ticket. it was nice, friendly, affable confrontation. it was very typical. tim walz, very, very
5:31 am
friendly, jovial individual who recognized me. >> we talked about being dads, kids, talked about how wonderful our love of our nation and the ceremony with 80th anniversary of d-day was taking place the discussion was not on politics, but rather as two friends do human beings to americans, to veterans talking with one another. >> for me, it was nice to reconnect with tim and i'm it's its interesting how fast american politics sometimes can change so rapidly. that was just a few weeks ago and just a few weeks ago, all of american politics has dramatically changed finished with president biden's withdrawal. and of course, they attempted fortunate attempted assassination of former president trump and the nominations it was nice. it was refreshing. it was good to do something other than talk about partisan politics.

arrest the team, he was already in the stadium so extraordinary just to think sara, that just a few hours ago, this individual is 17-year-old was arrested just outside the stadium. >> the head of the security services also explained to me that they believe that these plot included using a vehicle potentially to run over concert-goers that would be fans outside of the stadium. there's potentially thousands of fans that would just be waiting outside the stadium. the plot potentially was to run over them with a vehicle before using an explosive device. the investigation is still very much underway. the concerts of course, now canceled, but the city is full of swifties. sara, who say they're trying to find a safe place to come together and celebrate wow. >> really extraordinary to hear that there was someone already working inside of the stadium as one of the suspects. >> salma. thank you for that new reporting this morning. appreciate it. >> okay. >> and this just in donald trump says he's going to be
5:40 am
holding a news conference today at 2:00 eastern additionally, moments ago trump put out a statement on social media seeming to accept that he will actually get on a debate stage with kamala harris saying that in his words, he's going to expose kamala harris during the debate the same way he says he did with joe biden and then hillary clinton on the debate stage, trump saying that he thinks to actually debating kamala harris will be easier. this is after trump had backed out of a previously scheduled debate on abc that's set for september 10, so let's see, joining me right now is ron brownstein, cnn senior political analyst, senior editor for the atlantic. it is great to see you in okay. you have donald trump has said on social media, and then i'll play for everyone to remind everyone what donald trump said just yesterday morning. listen to this i. >> don't know how she debates. he heard she's sort of a nasty person, but not a good, a good debater. but we'll see because will be debating her, i guess in the pretty near future. it's going to be announced
5:41 am
fairly soon, but we'll be debating her okay. >> so they're debating. yes. who needs the debate? could he actually afford to not debate? >> no, we can't. i mean, that was the point. i mean, i wasn't really that interested in what he was saying because the trajectory of the race in polling is that most national polls already show her head heading into the democratic convention. she's likely to come at a very likely to come out of the democratic convention, leading in national polls and probably leading in many of the swing state polls. and at that point, there's no question that he's going to debate. are you acid evader? so like whatever he said, we're heading toward it today, blah, blah, blah, blah, blah. >> they will be any days, they will be on a debate stage washington post has some new reporting today about how angry or frustrated whatever you want to describe it that donald trump is to be facing kamala harris. >> now, here's the quote. he is quote complaining relentlessly and asking friends about how his campaign is performing according to five people close to the campaign who like some other spoken condition of anonymity to discuss private conversations, quote, it's unfair that i beat
5:42 am
him and now i have to beat her to trump told an ally in a phone call last weekend, and the fight right now seems to be focusing in rural midwestern. you look at where they're going in terms of in terms of their rallies, what you've got a lot of reporting on what do they need the wall? >> yeah. so look, first of all, i mean, trump was in a very strong position against biden, not only because of the doubts about biden, but also because of the limits of biden's ability to drive a message against them. know what we saw in the debate was not not only confirmation for voters who thought biden was too old. we saw biden unable to make the democratic case. that democratic voters want to hear against trump, in which harris has been making very forcefully. so i am the person who actually coined the phrase the blue wall. and the blue wall refers actually the 18 states that democrats won in every election but only as the three, the the blue, he was talking about the blue wall as the three states that trump dislodged from the blue wall.
5:43 am
>> it's actually the 18 states democrats won from 92 to 2012. most stage they'd won that often since the formation of the modern party system here's the key thing, trump won those three states, michigan, pennsylvania, and wisconsin by a combined 80,000 votes in 2016 they made him president. but since his breakthrough, they have mostly moved back toward the democrats. democrats won the governorship in all three of them in 2018, biden won all three of them in 2020. this time by 250,000 votes. and then in 2022 that democrats won the governorships again by a bigger margin in each case than biden did now, biden was eroding in those states. those states are not demographically easy for harris harris's main avenue to improve her vote should be to improve among non-white voters and young voters relative to biden these are older and whiter states but the poll that came out yesterday, the marquette university poll and wisconsin i think was really revealing for harris because it showed that she was basically matching biden's 20 2020 numbers among blue collar
5:44 am
whites in wisconsin and exceeding biden's numbers among college educated whites, not shocking. abortion was rescinded after 2020. if she can do that and wisconsin, it shows that there is a path for her in all three of them, the three states have voted the same way in every elections since 1992 the michigan, pennsylvania, wisconsin, there now the blue bricks in the blue, they are the bear or the loose bricks and a couple it a goal, just moved three states and harris's direction we've arizona, nevada, georgia, now back into toss up range after moving to lean republican last month test that against this quote from kellyanne conway on the state of play, she says, the camila bump was a direct cause from the biden slump. >> conway said in an interview there was nowhere for his successor to go but up in fundraising and enthusiasm, but this remains is president trump's election to lose the electoral map and underlying fundamentals favor him. >> yeah, you say the big fundamental that's still
5:45 am
favors him. is that a majority of americans believe that biden's policies have not improved their economic situation even in polling like the one we talked about, just mentioned, wisconsin that had harris slightly ahead by trump still has a significant advantage on who you trust on the economy, right? and that is a reality without biden in the field. obviously this democratic enthusiasm has been unleashed but he's still a president with a 55, 58% disapproval rating. and when that happens, the party out of the white house should be favored. now, the to me, the key strategic question harris is going to, in all likelihood performed better in the sunbelt and biden because she should do better among non-white. and younger voters. the question is whether she can perform better enough to actually tip any of them back into our column. i mean, sun belt states had drifted pretty much out of reach for biden, leaving him only the path of sweeping michigan, pennsylvania, wisconsin, plus the oncd. can she put arizona? or georgia back over the line? if she
5:46 am
can't, she isn't the same position he was she has to switch sweep those rust belt states here. >> i mean, kind of to ron's point, we just saw a new ad put out by the by the harris-walz campaign reaching out to latino voters, which speaks to a segment of what you're getting at right now. >> nevada. >> it is great to see you. >> good. >> thank you. >> coming up for us, the boeing starliner astronauts, there were only supposed to be in space for eight days. remember this, this was like a month ago. >> a couple of months ago. now, nasa says that may have to stay on the international space station for more months to come. they disagreement over safety. the now has those astronauts somewhat strike branded there in limbo and the days of moocing off your friends costco membership may be numbered friends. you aware of the new scanners coming your way cnn is live from chicago, as democrats unite to offer their support to a new nominee and her running mate fellow cnn for complete coverage. >> the democratic national

5:52 am
credit for, but it won't escalate the situation if all of a sudden, if we have in a similar attack that we saw last time in april, they throw everything at them, 300 rockets. then israel now respond disproportionately back. i don't i think iran wants that right now talk about what damage though could be done from hezbollah, where they're located and what that would mean to potential israeli civilians as well as palestinians. >> frankly, they're so close to lebanon, israel would have to more of a tactical air defense platforms here, while us forces are out in the mediterranean doing things, the bottom line is it's a very close in, very close battle that would take place. >> iron dome, the rock good said that would come from lebanon. there much shorter range, much more difficult to shoot out of the sky, likely higher probability that you'll see casualties on the other side in addition, we know that they've signaled that they were going to attack the airport, the head of the mossad, the head of the idf. they're going to go after key facilities inside of israel that israel now has to worry about defending all of those when it
5:53 am
comes to sort of de-escalating this, you just talked about how hi iran might do that the united states hoping to deescalate what more might be done. the united states has already sent some troops into the areas some ships into the area. >> well, i think those are deterrence forces right now, more strategic, keeping the houthis from yemen out of the picture and the like. i think some of the forces from the uss abraham lincoln won't even get there for the next few weeks. but having, having said that, the united states provides this umbrella to a multi-layered air defense system those that are going on there. but what we're seeing now is pressure from other arab nations on iran. i think that's important as they try to deescalate the situation because it is a tinderbox, because if they do suffer civilian casualties, israel is going to respond disproportionately and that likely means attacks inside of iran and the conflagration getting bigger and bigger and the fear of the regional war here. and we just look at it, look at the map here. as you sort of zoom closer in this relationship between hezbollah and iran, as known and israel
5:54 am
is sort of sitting there waiting. is there a psychological component to all of this? >> no question. i think as a soldier on the ground in the foxhole, you're always concerned about when that attack takes place they've got to be concerned about attacks here on their eastern flank, for example, but mostly coming here from the north. i think that you're always on edge and until it happens, you don't know. they could start an initial attack and that looks it's like the attack and then they back off and then something else happens. so it's very difficult to be on the defensive side of this is real as they've said, is not yet, said, they're going to turn around quickly and response. so that's the other side of this. if they do get attacked from hezbollah to the north, you're going to see rockets go right back into lebanon. >> all right. >> mike lyons. thank you so much. appreciate it, major. back over to you. kate membership moochers. >> be where kasko is adding a brand new layer checks to make sure that you are using your own membership. there will be scanners at the front of the

5:57 am
home. after technical glitch followed by technical glitch, it's kinda stranded them in limbo there. now, they've had until mid august allegedly to make a final decision on what to do joining me right now as former nasa nasa astronaut all around good guy, mike massimino. it's great to see you. thank you for being here first and foremost, let's get to the technical stuff in the dispute in just a second. as an astronaut, you're up there, you're supposed to be there for eight days is now been 60 plus. and then you're then it's suggested you might need to be there for like five months. >> yeah. >> what is that what does that do? do? >> what i think there's always that possibility and they know about that and maybe more importantly, their families know about that as well. but this is a big stretch. we did have an astronaut who was in space, frank rubio is in space for six months. he got extended because they had a problem with the soyuz spacecraft and he was extended trove for a year that that's a big extension and this would be the same for them. so i think they mentally have to do a shift that okay. it's different now i'm in here
5:58 am
for a much longer haul than i was. and it's not just them, but it's also their family and friends and everybody else on the ground to that we're expecting to get him back. they're going to be up there a bit longer. yeah. >> i think the least the thing. that i questioned the least on this is that they can handle it like no let the right people for this sunday and butch are both span of long-duration missions there. i know them both very well. there test pilots are great astronauts. their families are very supportive as well. yeah, you've got the right people in place. so i think it's going to be a bit of a mental adjustment for them and expectation adjustment. but there'll be just fine if they do this, if they end up saying, i mean, we don't know how long it's going to be. >> let's catch this in all yes. >> yeah. >> what's happening on the ground though, is kind of where i would like to stick it seems that there is a dispute now between boeing engineers and nasa engineers on how safe is safe and is it safe enough for them to get back on the starliner and to come back what is the i'm so are you surprised by this dispute kind of becoming public not i think
5:59 am
math has been pretty forthcoming in i saw like a month ago or so it seemed like they were working toward a conclusion. they were doing testing there, getting results ground that they could corroborate it and space and it's just a question of time until they bring them home inside the spaceship. but i got the sense yesterday that they're still talking about it and they use the word uncomfortable for being uncomfortable, being comfortable. so i think there is a bit of a discussion going on. i know he's a dispute, but certainly there's a discussion where it seems like some people are saying, yeah, we're, we're good to go. let's bring them home in the starliner, but they're apparently are some people who have a vote here who is saying not so fast. let's look at this a little bit longer. >> okay, so the source of the problem here is how it has been described. and this is clearly i'm going to quote you since i know nothing of several thrusters used to orient the spacecraft's suddenly shut off as it approaches space station. the propulsion system has also suffered helium leaks. yes, is this. all right, so they have 28 thrusters on board of this spaceship. so in order to dock like they did when it came with

a, the space, say she need to be able to control your attitude? look, your parking your car very delicately and a very you really need all that data, all that everything has got to be working right? so they can afford to lose a couple of them. they lost five of them when they were going through docking, they still had shouldn't do math in public, but they had 23 left right fit for now they're able to bring five of them back online. city of 27 man of 28 working you need that to undock and also to get yourself in the right position to re-enter the issue is that the failure that they had they don't want to lose these things again on the way home and cause a bigger problem. >> and the failure that they had there investigating and they're still collecting data and they haven't come to, i guess are 100% consensus that is going to work. they want to understand that a lot are spacex. >> they have big of a blow is that for boeing, this is a big deal for them because this has happened before there was a soil use that went up and had a leak and they didn't feel comfortable bringing the crew back. >> they sent the next so
