a, the space, say she need to be able to control your attitude? look, your parking your car very delicately and a very you really need all that data, all that everything has got to be working right? so they can afford to lose a couple of them. they lost five of them when they were going through docking, they still had shouldn't do math in public, but they had 23 left right fit for now they're able to bring five of them back online. city of 27 man of 28 working you need that to undock and also to get yourself in the right position to re-enter the issue is that the failure that they had they don't want to lose these things again on the way home and cause a bigger problem. >> and the failure that they had there investigating and they're still collecting data and they haven't come to, i guess are 100% consensus that is going to work. they want to understand that a lot are spacex. >> they have big of a blow is that for boeing, this is a big deal for them because this has happened before there was a soil use that went up and had a leak and they didn't feel comfortable bringing the crew back. >> they sent the next soil use
6:01 am
up, but without the cruelty left them on the ground frank rubio is stuck there for over a year. he came back on et on that second soil use so it has happened before, i think the differences here is that people are really paying attention to this on cnn is covering it, and others are two, of course and it's the first, first ride of this spatial said new spaceship it's a test flight which means you're going to have some kinks to work out. so i think they're going to get the spaceship back. definitely they'll get the crew back whether or not they come back together. we don't know, but the story is still need to be told that even if that space is a spaceship comes back by itself. there's still going to be some investigating going on and maybe there'll be able to fly it again. we'll see, and then we'll bring mike back on it. >> help us i love to come back hopefully would good news always. great to see you, sir. >> new hour of cnn, new central starts now this morning. >> the harris-walz campaign battleground blitz has a new ad
6:02 am
targeting key voters that they've lost ground with latino voters. while donald trump has just announced a news conference this afternoon, while hinting at a possible debate. plus tornado those rip across north carolina as tropical storm debby tears a path through the southeast. and it's still on the move. who is next in its path plus? a terror plot against taylor swift concerts overseas, warded how the united states raised the alarm and what we know now about the alleged none mr. mine, i'm sara sider with kate bolduan and john berman out today. this is cnn news central all right. new this morning, the debate surrounding a potential debate is picking not or maybe it's settled. donald trump on social media posting that he will quote exposed kamala harris during quote do debate and that it will be
6:03 am
quote, easier for then joe biden and hillary clinton. but again, he called it a quote, the debate. >> so it means it makes it feel a lot more likely this morning so we're headed towards a quote, debate harris for her part, will have ample opportunity to respond as she is soon going to be taking the stage in michigan, wants again before taking the campaign out west on another battleground blitz. >> all of this is there's brand new polling, cnn poll of polls coming out, finding that there is still no clear leader it are right now from an kamala harris, each holding 49% support in a head-to-head matchup. cnn's arlette saens traveling with vice president's campaign okay. arlette so there is a debate. we think what are you hearing well, kate, the biden camp or the harris campaign has yet to directly respond to these latest mrs. from former president donald trump. >> but harris is team has been
6:04 am
pretty consistent that she plans on appearing on september 10 debate hosted by abc news so the campaign has long argued that it is trump who has been moving the goalposts about these debates after initially committing to a debate against joe biden on september 10 with abc news. >> so we'll see how this debate about the debate plays out over the course of the coming days. but vice president harris is back on the campaign in trail today with her new running mate, minnesota governor tim walz. they're here are the battleground state of michigan. before traveling to arizona later tonight, the two will be out west so really introduce their democratic ticket to voters and some of the key groups that they are trying to sway are latino voters this morning, the harris campaign is out with a new ad trying to introduce the courts. latino voters, and it comes at a time when polling has shown that harris has actually seen an improvement among latino voters compared to president joe biden should currently has about 57% support from latino
6:05 am
voters. but i want to play for you a bit of the message that the campaign has for lunch you know, voters today, as they're preparing to head out west when you're raised by an immigrant mother, you learn what's possible with the termination and determination is how kamala harris went from working at mcdonald's to prosecutor state attorney general, us senator, and vice president in only one generation. and with that same determination, gene always defended us the campaign, is hoping that that biography might play with let's voters in critical battleground states like arizona and nevada. but for harris and walz, the focus here today will be on courting union support here in the critical battleground, state of michigan, both harris and walz will be speaking to rank and file members of the uaw at a union hall a bit later this afternoon. i'm told there's
6:06 am
about excited to be about 0100 rank and file members in attendance. it comes at a time when harris has earned the endorsement of uaw leadership, but she stayed could have some work to do when it comes the actual rank and file members within these unions, you've seen former president donald trump tried to make a play for those types of voters heading into this election, those voters will be key. here is a state like michigan which has a large auto industry and relies heavily on union support. harris, his focus today is trying to take her for message directly to those rank and file members as she's looking to gain more support, support heading into november's election, arlette, thank you so much, sir. all right. to continue this conversation with me now, is democratic senator alex padilla of california. thank you so much for coming in and coming in early this morning from there on the west coast. we've seen this new ad it is going to run an english and in spanish targeting latino voters who of course are not a monolith. why do you think donald trump has been able to try and grow support from
6:07 am
latino voters? >> well, i think i'm not surprised that to donald trump is tried to grow support amongst latino voters. i just don't think he's actually done it. it was the narrative that we've heard in the 2020 election and it did not materialize. it was a narrative that we've heard in 2022 and it did not materialize. and so here we are in 2024, tons of enthusiasm in the latino community particularly young latinos about the harris-walz ticket. sara. this is important to understand that there's projected to be 17.5 million latinos voting this november's election, that to growing number, a significant number, many in key states like nevada, like arizona, one in four, are young people biden potentially for the first time. so it's a significant part of the electorate, not just today, but into the future. and there's enthusiasm around harris and walz.
6:08 am
>> how much do you think this fight over immigration despite over the migrant crisis that was on the border is going to play into this. and how do you expect kamala harris to try to defend herself because there have been lots of attacks on her about the work that she was supposed to have done on the border? >> right no it look, as you said earlier, you know, community is not a monolith. there's a variety of opinions and positions here, but yes, border security and immigration general is a concern to many people here's what we know numbers of people coming to the southern border even though seeking asylum or wait down in recent months since a change of policy in the biden white house kamala harris was part of trying to address those root causes of the number of people coming to the united states. and the numbers are down lower to where they were at the end
6:09 am
of the trump administration. those are facts that real data here's what to know about kamala harris, not only is she thoughtful in terms of balanced approach, yes, we need to be smart about enforcement. we have to address root causes, but we can't forget about dreamers, farmworkers, other long-term resident of the united states that have been here for years and years contribute to the success and the strength of our country. now, contrast of that with the chaos and the fear that trump has promised. he has said mass deportations beginning on day one that would strike fear in communities across the country and do damage to our economy. so the choice is very clear, and i think the latino community, everybody frankly, is he's going to respond accordingly with our vote in november i want you to respond to a stunned by j.d. >> vance, who tried to confront kamala harris on the tarmac in wisconsin after her plane landed for a rally, there last night, let's watch i figured i
6:10 am
felt by more my plaintiff few months, but he also thought because the vice president doesn't answer questions from reporters as this is one of the lines. she has not done an interview, she has not done a press conference. and the past 17 or so days, donald trump is now doing a press conference at 2:00 it is a new type of trolling. he is becoming a bit of a stunt man here for donald trump. but does he have a point that the public has not seen her do a press conference or sit down interview yet look sara it's trawling. it's a stunt its desperation. if you ask me they can't run under record, they can't run on a vision for the future. they can't run hope, optimism for the american people. so this is what they're left with vice president harris has not just done interview after interview over the years. she's been doing the job of vice president for more than 300 years
6:11 am
tremendous chapter in her career after having been a district attorney in san francisco, after having been attorney general for the state of california, after having served in the united states senate, longer than jd vance's even been in office. alright, so let's be clear as to where the experience and the maturity lies. and she'll continue to do more in areas you got to cut a little bit of slack for the last three-and-a-half week an unprecedented way to become the nominee for the democratic party. she's assembled to delegates to become the presumptive nominee. she has quickly vetted and selected a tremendous running mates in governor walz were preparing for the democratic convention in chicago as she's stumping, she's doing the day job and stumping in all the critical battleground states. so we'll get to the media interviews soon enough when you look at these numbers, can we pop those numbers back up on the screen showing harris as opposed to biden as opposed to trump when it comes to her support among
6:12 am
latino voters, does this surprise you? >> you look at those numbers, 57% seem to like harris over trump it was inverted almost with biden and trump look, i've been blessed to know and work with vice president harris for more than 20 years. so did a number of surprised me absolutely not because those of us that know her, those of us that have worked with her and she's been there for us on all the key issues and we're going to be with her this november. she has been supportive in, a community in terms of educational opportunity? she's been supportive community in terms of economic opportunity and the coalition building required to be successful in a diverse state like california is now manifesting itself to this national strategy. national outreach plan indicative again today of today's add, not just on english, in english and in spanish on television airwaves,

but digital strategies, grassroots investments in organizers building on the historic investments that the biden-harris campaign made earlier this year. so there's a lot of excitement, a lot of momentum, and a lot of work get to do for the next 88 days. but you heard it here first and, you know, community is going to come through big for the harris-walz ticket yep. >> just 88 days. wow. senator alex padilla. thank you so much for getting up at o dark 30 for us to come and discuss this in middle school, torn apart by a tornado that ripped through north carolina overnight. >> this is part of a second landfall from tropical storm debby. we're tracking the storm and where it's headed in the threat. today, plus cnn has learned one of the team suspect's arrest stood in a plot to attack a taylor swift concert, had just gained at gotten a job inside the stadium, relied in vienna, austria with new reporting thank and reaction. we're also watching dow futures right now as the roller coaster that is

6:20 am
said, you he'll have a lot of these areas that are getting heavy rain, places like raleigh, even the city of like charlotte, north carolina also getting heavy rain and that's really going to be the more widespread concern is the potential for flooding. all of these red counties highlighted here, those are flash flood warnings. this one down here that was at one point a flash flood emergency. they had up to eight inches of rainfall in just a few short hours. hours, more of that rain is going to come down. that's why we still have the potential for flooding not only today, but tomorrow. it just shifts farther into the northeast as we head into friday definitely still the remnants of it all still need to be tracking. awesome. thank you so much. >> sara breaking overnight sources telling cnn this morning, the u.s. >> provided warnings to austrian authorities about potential isis terror threats at taylor swift concerts now, three highly anticipated swift shows have been canceled. cnn salma abdelaziz is in vienna for us. some of you just reported some really fascinating information that one of the suspects had a job
6:21 am
already inside one of the stadiums that may have been attacked. what are authorities saying about how this was all for did and how big this attack may have been shocking new details, sara, in what the authorities are calling a wind ranging in serious terror plot to strike the building building right behind me here it is the stadium where taylor swift was, of course, set to hold three different concerts. >> the head of the country's security services says, one of the suspects having keen year-old who was radicalized, was arrested outside the stadium. he had been able to get a job working for one of the vendors that services these this stadium, right? right here. and he'd only obtained that job just a few days prior to his arrest, sara, i think what is also super concerning to authorities right now is the age of the suspects, 19-year-old 17-year-old a 15-year-old, also being questioned, take a listen to how the head of the security services put it to me it's very
6:22 am
worrying. we can see that in austria, we have very young guys to de-radicalize due to the fact that they are using the online propaganda that this product out from isis and also i escapee and we could see that they have a very high radicalization and that they also motivated to two attacks authorities now say that they believed this was going to be a multi-pronged attack, sara, that they would have potentially used a vehicle to run over swifties standing outside this concert hall, thousands of fans it's were expected just to be outside the concert hall, and after using a vehicle that they would potentially detonate an explosive device of some kind. >> as you can imagine, the investigation qin is still very much underway, but the city is already occupied by swifties and i want to introduce you to one of them. this is 11-year-old macy. i know you're here with your mom, christina in this was a big deal to go to this concert. it was your first concert of your life. how are you feeling now it's can

>> he wednesday night dynamite at 8:00 tbs very soon the harris-walz ticket will take their battleground blitz out west before that, they have one more stop in michigan. >> and this is after kamala harris last night, not only took two the stage, but also took on some pro-palestinian protesters trying to step on her message, heckling her over the administration's position on the war in gaza and tends to surrender our fight against the climate crisis. and he intends to end the affordable care act now what if you want donald trump to win? >> then say that otherwise, i'm speaking joining us right now, cnn, political commentator paul begala and former press adviser to then house speaker john boehner, maura gillespie. good to see you guys. >> paul. >> the war remained a lingering issue for joe biden, of course,
6:30 am
when he was at the top of the ticket what is this going to mean for the harris-walz campaign? now not much. i'm sorry. it's a big myth that it's a terrible crisis in gaza in my heart breaks. it really does but politically you had like 13% in michigan who voted protest against joe biden, by the way, when barak obama ran, he had 11% in michigan, okay. protests against him. and there wasn't any problems in those under war in gaza at the time. so it's actually kind of overblown. and i think the grace and strength that kamala harris showed with those. you don't want to be mean camila want to be rude to them. but i thought she handled it just perfectly she she she keeps going like this. she can win this thing. >> i wanted to ask it more just from a comms perspective. what do you think of how she handled it every candidate, every presidential candidate, especially handles hecklers, protesters the, the world we
6:31 am
live in today. what do you think of how she handled it? >> i mean, i'm not necessarily speaking on behalf of democrats here, but i think as an american that was how you have to handle it. if you're trying to put yourself out there to be the leader of the free world. you got to stand firm against this and point out what they're doing isn't helping if they're there because they believe they want us support the democratic ticket. that's not helping by heckling her. and so she handled it in a way that i think is how of your kamala harris supporter you wanted to see her to handle it and redirect the message back to what the goal is here is her goal is to be donald trump and that's how you get there. >> let's talk about messaging and let's talk we know now that donald trump says that he is going to be having a press conference at 2:00 p.m. this afternoon a wide ranging i'm sure he will say press conference, part of the message. i'm just going to assume is going to be paul attacking tim walz and his military career. you remember swift boat? well, could it land the same in 2024 as it didn't do thousand four this will be a
6:32 am
great question. the first big test because reportedly the same guy who was behind swift votes is behind this, right? so he hasn't grown morally. the question has had the democrats groan tougher and smarter. >> this is what you do. you go, jake jilin hall and roadhouse on him. you hit back so hard. do you say i'm not going to take lectures about master sergeant walz's military service from a man who faked bone spurs to get out of service himself. donald trump, donald trump who said, our war dead are suckers and losers. donald trump, who stood over the grave of a fallen hero at arlington cemetery and said to his dad, i don't get it. what was in it for them donald trump who doesn't want wounded warriors at his events, because, and i quote, no one wants to see that donald trump, who said john mccain and other pows were not heroes. >> donald trump who praised adolf hitler said hitler did a lot of good things. donald trump, who sucks up to vladimir putin, and told the whole world he believes potent over courageous american intelligence. donald trump who attacked of gold star family of
6:33 am
captain who may on khan of virginia, who gave his life for our country. so forgive me if i won't take lectures on master sergeant waltzes service from a coward and a creep and a crook like donald trump. that's what the democrats out to say. >> and we will we shall see more. >> what do you think of this more? >> because one aspect of this, me taking a different approach then paul on this is if you don't if you really want to open up the basket of, we can look back at the past that is not been a good place so far for donald trump and for j.d. vance going from j.d. vance and cat, ladies, j.d. vance, on hating police, j.d vance on calling donald trump dima's america's hitler, the looking back is not been beneficial to them so far. but what do you think of this approach? because it seems it's very coordinated. it's very targeted and it does not look like it's going to let up from, from republican, right?
6:34 am
>> i don't think it's ever good for veterans to be competing us veterans about their service and questioning each other service as a nation, we should be grateful for all of our veteran service because they've got the right, there is a third lane. just appreciate it. >> just right absolutely. i do think though that what happened in the rally in philadelphia where tim walz would off-the-cuff by all accounts by making the couch comment directly, j.d. vance, he opened himself up then to j.d. vance going to say something back at him and pointing out. and again, i don't that's totally agree with going better and verse that are in on your service. but i don't think that tim walz had thought through it in a way because today's press conference with donald trump, a bit rich as paul may have pointed out there. but if it comes from j.d. vance, it's a little bit different, right? because he is a fellow veteran. he actually served as a marine corps like he served overseas in afghanistan. so it's very different. and i think we all realize that some of the questionable or misleading comments that governor walz has made opens him up to voters, then thinking, should we be questioning a little bit of his character? what does that say about him? so i'm not saying
6:35 am
that it's a tactic that will benefit because looking backwards has not proven to be effective for republicans, but also hasn't proven to be effective for democrats. but again, this is politics, and this is a part of politics that most americans find beyond frustrating because both sides don't know where to stop this. >> this is when it gets nasty and i'll go in and they go too far right there is no bottom is what we have realized. fortunately, well, before we go i wanted to ask you something i saw on punchbowl reporting that some key vulnerable democrats are not attending the dem convention. and here's how the playbook is writing about the punchbowl is right about the sorry. with the senate at stake falling into it, stake of falling into republican control and the gop targeting dozens of at-risk house democrats some members are prioritizing their own campaigns over the convention. sherrod brown of ohio, jon tester of montana. they said they will not be going jacky rosen of nevada, who will appear with harris and walz in nevada on saturday, is also skipping the dnc. they also named vulnerable house dems have said they are not attending. it is true that not all politicians of a certain

luke wood, and one of the first students sign up at the black honors college, olivia lewis. thank you both for joining us this morning. doctor, would i want to go first to you? why do you think it is so critical right now at this point in american history to have a black honors college. the first of its kind well i think it's important to have it because it creates an opportunity for students to be in an environment where they're fully invested in you know, in california, we have a lot of students who do leave the state to go have an amazing experience at a historically black college or university. >> but we also know that there are students who are placed you can't necessarily the state, but wants to be able haven't experience that focused on them the curriculum, the faculty the cultural experience is one that's rooted in their history, their life, in their culture olivia you were a student there. you signed up for this class, one of the first what do you hope to get out of this class that you don't feel like has been offered in other places before,
6:45 am
except for hbcus so, what i'm hoping for is so first it's an honors college. so what that means is basically the education is taken more seriously and now is a really big factor for me. so i'm hoping for better education. and honestly i'm hoping to be in a community where there's intelligent, gifted people that look like me and honestly, i just i just want to be a part of a community where we all work together and we're just, you know living is talking about when working together. so i'm curious, dr. wood, is this a class that really is just for black folks or should white students and latino students and asian students? also join in to a class such as this. what would they get out of it
6:46 am
well, we're never going to succeed in being inclusive by excluding. >> so for us, it's really important to make sure that this is experienced. that's opened up to everyone wearing california and that's kind of the ethos and also the legal landscape of the state that means said, while we are open to every student of every background, what we've done is we've created a curriculum that specifically focus on black history, black life, and black culture. and so i would say to any student who's interested in having that kind of experience that this would be one that would be perfect for them also say that this is part of a larger effort that's taking place across the cal state system where you're seeing institutions lean into a focus on serving black students and black students access under the leadership of our chancellor mildred garcia and what we're doing here is a unique component of that and that we have andina students are on director, on faculty, members, are on staff, members are on therapists, are on academic advisors and outreach team. so we created entire ecosystem around these

students. so all of their general education will be taught in the honors college with faculty members who have demonstrated record of success in teaching and serving black students i'm curious to, this is to the both of you. i'll start with you, dr. would, how concerned are you about a move to ban books in libraries in schools? some of them like the bluest eye and beloved from toni morrison, who's one of truly the most prolific black authors of our time. how do you see this playing into this? and was this a thought process when you decided that this school needed to exist in the cal state system what was certainly a thought process because obviously across the united states, you're seeing a push against diversity and inclusion. you're seeing the banning of books, the elimination or banning of critical race theory of african american studies of dei i offices of anything related to diversity, equity, and inclusion. and at the same time in the same states, they'll put the students who are black on the front of their brochures for the colleges and universities. and so what we
