6:00 am
his officers are suffering from what happened because of what happened ten years ago, he pointed out that most of the police department is totally different from the department that existed ten years ago this community is going through a lot over the past ten years again, recognizing what took play placing years ago in you know, and i think many of us would agree policing needed to change. >> we needed reform, you know, there are some good things that came out of this. but the ferguson some police department is doing everything that everybody is asking us to do. and it is at this time that we all come together and embrace this and john, this suspect 28-year-old elijah gantz, remains in jail. we have not been able to reach legal representation for him, but we are told he is still being held on a $500,000 cash bond. john. >> all right. ed lavendera, we appreciate your reporting on this. thank you so much. we've got a new hour of cnn, new central starts in right now
6:01 am
this a sudden kamala harris harris and tim walz announcing a bus tour across battleground, pennsylvania just a day before the democratic national convention begins plus new cnn reporting. >> you crane has conducted its biggest attack on russian airfields since the war started. it's the latest move to take the war to russia and binge drinking he totaling in why more young people are saying no thanks to alcohol. i'm sara sidner with john berman and kate bolduan. this is cnn new central new this morning, the new push for pennsylvania cnn now learning kamala harris and her running mate tim walz, are planning a bus tour through the commonwealth also known as a key battleground for anyone
6:02 am
hoping to win the white house pennsylvania sunday's bus tour is planned just before they kick off the democratic convention in chicago. >> the push for pennsylvania nick coming as the harris campaign is trying to make inroads and win back some of the lead that donald trump has held for quite some time on the economy. and his economic, the economic agenda, saying he is long waged a war on workers is the position and pitch from the harris campaign at the center of that message a question about whether or not donald trump could make a mcflurry can you simply picture donald trump working at a mcdonald's, tried to make a mcflurry or something. >> he couldn't run that dam fluorine mcflurry machine if it does seem anything cnn's eva mckend has much more on those eva, you have this new reporting about this bus tour. what are you learning yeah. >> kate, i'll get to that in just a bit, but i just also want to note which was significant yesterday when he was addressing the american federation of state, county and
6:03 am
municipal employees union, he addressed these the attacks are for the first time against his military career talking about that career and really standing up for himself, saying that he is proud of his service and that was the first time that he really took on jd vance's attacks head-on. let's listen i'm going to say it again as clearly as i can. i am proud of my service to this country and i firmly believe you should never denigrate another person's service record to anyone brave enough to put on that uniform for our great country, including my opponent. i just have a few simple words. >> thank you for your service and sacrifice and kate, new this morning, we are learning that the governor and the vice president going to make a last-minute stop in pennsylvania ahead of the democratic national convention.
6:04 am
>> they've held these big rallies. what the goal of the bus tours sunday is to have more intimate vince. so they'll stop in on canvassers and retail shops in order to get that critical facetime in this battleground state. and they'll start this bus tour in pittsburgh. so everyone will have to scramble their travel plans ahead of the dnc. now. but they are doing this pennsylvania and it just really illustrates kate how important this state is to the campaign. it's 19 electoral votes. they of course had the big rollout of the ticket in philadelphia that's right, eva. >> thank you so much for your reporting. >> that combined with the news that that harris and walz are doing a big rally in wisconsin on to who's day. the convention. you can see how they're trying to program in battleground states, even during a convention which is in illinois this morning, nikki haley has some blunt advice for donald trump quick complaining
6:05 am
that she's not giving an interview what whining about her campaign is not going to win talking about crowd sizes so haley is not the first or the second or the third republican or even third trump ally to say this in the last 48 hours that donald trump is focused on all the wrong things. >> cnn's steve contorno is with us this morning, cbo, some new reporting on kind of a alarm in conservative circles absolutely, john, the concern is that donald trump has not only squandered the opportunity to define harris during these critical past three weeks, but that he is risking reminding voters why they decided to turn away from him. >> in 2020. and if you want a window into what the trump campaign would prefer, he talk about, take a look at this post to x on monday ahead of his interview with elon musk in it, trump asked the question, are you better off now than you were when i was president? that is certainly the ground that his campaign and his advisers want this race to be fought on.
6:06 am
but when it actually came time to have the interview with musk, trump didn't ask that question or bring up that topic until the very end of his two-hour interview with musk and steady spent time talking about the 2020 election comparing the beauty of vice president harris to the former first lady and his wife and these concerns are not just being made in private to donald trump anymore. they are coming into the public is his allies are trying to speak to him through the television. look at what a couple of them said earlier this week. >> he's got to make this race not on personalities stop questioning the size of her crowds and start questioning her position, the weighting formula for president trump is very plain to see its fewer insults, more insights, and that policy contrast now, we will see trump later today in north carolina, it's a speech that is supposed to be focused on the economy comparing and contrasting the records of the trump administration versus the
6:07 am
biden-harris administration. >> of course, john will be closely watching how closely he sticks to that script and it's also interesting interesting, because this is a state that several weeks ago we thought donald trump had tilted it in his advantage, but now is re-emerging as one of those critical battlegrounds heading into the fall kevin mccarthy, kellyanne conway, going on tv trying to reach trump in a place that they think he will see them, which of course is on conservative television, steve, thank you very much for that, sara. all right. i want to bring in cnn political commentators, se cupp and ashley allison. thank you, ladies for joining us. economy. of course, the biggest issue for voters. harris is expected to release her first major economic plan axios is saying something really interesting about what she is going to do. and a big part of the harris plan is to as they put it unapologetically changed some of her more liberal positions and say that he white house experience has changed her mind ashley, what do you make of
6:08 am
this? and can she do this successfully because of course, republicans are already saying this is a flip-flop. this is xi's flip-flopping yeah, well, i'm excited to hear that she's going to be rolling out her economic policy has been less than a month she's done at the top of the ticket and really wanted to kick the tires on some of the issues that she knows americans and voters really care about. >> i think she most certainly look that things i believed in 2016, most are true, but there are something because of lived experience that over eight years i've changed my mind on and i think that that is the courage of liter to say, okay, maybe i didn't have that exactly right, but i'm going to adjust it or the country is different now than it was pre-covid. i want to adjust some topics so the vice president has a great opportunity with the bus tour that eva just mentioned going through pennsylvania, a really important state and talk about her election, but also she'll have those four days of the convention and you won't just hear her talk about it in her speech. but i would imagine all
6:09 am
of her surrogates, all the big headliners that are going to be during the convention also teasing out some of the policies that the vice president stands on, whether they are different from her original position or not. >> se i want to ask you about donald trump's comments to elon musk you there's a lot of conversation around this partly because of how the unions are responding he sort of suggested that striking workers should be summarily fired or at least was praising elon musk for summarily firing workers that that may strike. we've now seen the united auto workers, president come out and say he's suing over that. and we've now seen another head of the a huge union saying this is economic terrorism for firing workers, for organizing striking. this is the same person who was at the rnc. how do you see this playing out? >> not well, i mean, this was a sloppy interview in that it didn't seem like trump had any
6:10 am
sort of idea of what he wanted to gain from it, other than sitting down with a friendly audience to billionaires in let's say are our grievances interview so stuff like this delighting and firing striking workers just kinda came out and the timing couldn't be worse. sara j.d. vance, today is in michigan speaking at a family-owned truck company in the state where uaw is headquartered, and a state which employs the most auto workers of any in the union. and also by the way, a state a swing state that will need to win the sloppiness of the trump 2.0 campaign keeps hitting these ugly roadblocks everywhere. it goes, because trump can stay on message i want to ask you ashley, about a couple of things. one, you've got harris, who in 2019 talked about closing some of the things on the border
6:11 am
decriminalizing really illegal immigration. the migrant crisis that was happening at the time. donald trump is responding to some of this and he went on university own, which is a spanish language television that is highly popular. and he said this about immigration we have people coming into our country from all over the world, not just from south america. >> everyone thinks south americans really from all over the world, they're coming from africa from the middle east, from asia, as were being attacked it's a new form of crime in the u.s it's called migrant crime. and it's caused because of harris kamala you know, hiring nobody knows her last name. it's harris. nobody, everyone thinks over his kamala, so it's kamala harris i'm curious what you made of that because there is an issue here in new york. >> people talking about some of the incidents that have happened with crime. what do you make of his response and whether or not you think kamala
6:12 am
harris should be changing her tact well, we do know her last name. >> it is harris and her first name is kamila. as you pronounce correctly, sarah, which he continues to intentionally mispronounced or maybe just not smart enough to remember how to say her name. nonetheless, look, we know immigration is an important issue and it is something that the democrats are going to have to address. but we also know border crossings are down under the biden-harris administration lower than i were. and when trump left office, we also know that there was a bipartisan bill that but for donald trump would have been signed to deal with some of these issues. but i want to address something else is that i'm not sure if you showed the picture, but donald trump recently released a mean that had pictures of african immigrants, black and african immigrants in this country. and he says let's put that up. you're talking about it. this is what he put out here. take a look at that picture. it really gives you a
6:13 am
sense of where his head is out and talk about that his campaign in him pushing that out now, it's not the immigration is not an important issue, but it's the way that donald trump talks about it. he talks about them being s whole countries, or he talks about them being immigrants, being rapists and murderers and othering. it's trying to make voters and americans feel scared of immigrants come into our country. we want a reality, most of the folks who are in america, or because they have an immigrant story, their families coming from europe and so donald trump has a tactic right now that is not surprising because it's a part of his tactic, but he's doing these things what racial undertones is saying like kamala harris, presidency, all these black immigrants and african immigrants and haitian immigrants are going to come into your country. and you want that and you should be afraid and so it doesn't appear that scare tactics fully work in
6:14 am
elections, but it is right out of the trump playbook. and i would hope that their campaign would behave better if you want to talk about the issues. great. but using imagery to try and invoke fear is pretty ruthless politics se does it, does it work? >> because we see a lot of ads that do just exactly what alice was saying. >> you scare tactics i wish it didn't, but fear works real well. >> actually as a motivator. and that's on both sides, have had sort of fear fearmongering traditionally and historically, but i've always said there's a good way to bad way to say anything. and there are good ways to talk about immigration, the migrant crisis, or crime in our cities. this isn't one of them, but let me just add a note to this. >> it's also what the trump campaign is not talking about. >> there's some real low lying fruit, low hanging fruit over on the harris-walz campaign that they're just ignoring minnesota, for example, tim walz's state has a no week
6:15 am
restriction on abortion that places it well outside where a majority of americans are minnesota also has one of the highest income taxes of any state in the union. >> go after that, let's have can we have a riff or a meme on that once in a while? >> they just seem to want to stay with litigating harris's race calling out walz's military service record calling her dumb and stupid and mispronouncing her name. >> this is not a campaign that's a crisis of confidence that's not knowing where to go or what to do se cupp joining the chorus of republicans trying to get trump to change tact. ashley allison. thank you so much both of you for coming on this morning. >> john. >> all right. hundreds of thousands are without power this morning. >> as tropical storm ernesto expected to strengthen to a hurricane today we've got new reporting on the high profile
6:16 am

car are you ready to connect to a perfect journey with turkish airlines? >> to feel welcomed and to feel refreshed to discover unforgettable flavors to reach new heights of happiness to connect to a journey that's perfect. >> because of you what would you like to pay for your hotel room tonight? >> 185, 169, or $155 same room same service. just different prices. >> really up to you well, nobody asks you this perception. but that's exactly what you're vargo does. chavaga compares hotel prices from hundreds of books so save yourself valuable time and money. you chavaga, compare hotel prices and save him for $30 a night hotel.
6:20 am
>> chavaga as a cardiologist, when i put my patients on a statin to reduce cholesterol, i also tell them it can deplete their coat queue ten levels. >> i recommend taking cute all coc uten cue. it all has three times better absorption than regular coke. putin, kunal, the brand i trust zer tech allergy relief works fast. >> it lasts a full 24 hours, so they can be good liver dance okay. >> dave let's be more than our allergies. >> seize the day with xhr tech in a baseball season full of surprises on never seen anything like him will be tuesday on tbs is breaking down. you play using teams that are breaking out, phillies break covers 6:00 p.m. on tbs and max hunter biden has a new lawyer this morning ahead of his upcoming federal tax evasion trial in california, mark geragos, whose clients have included diddy, went on a rider or jussie smollett. they might he might be a hunter
6:21 am
biden's ticket to negotiating a plea deal. now cnn's katelyn polantz has much more on this. kaitlan. what are you learning about it? what does it mean okay. >> a plea would avoid a second trial for hunter biden in federal court. he's already been convicted of gun crimes in delaware, and he is headed in just three weeks to a trial on tax evasion charges what our resources are telling us is that hunter biden has been open to a plea deal with the special counsel's office for some time. he had one before it fell apart, before the judge, it was a deal that would have minimized his potential prison time and even after he was convicted by a jury in delaware's federal port on those gun charges. there were some nominal preliminary feeling out talks of the possibility of a plea deal. he does seem to be possibly open to this to not have this second trial in california, but the special counsel's office hasn't given him anything
6:22 am
concrete that he would want and so it's full steam ahead to trial. that's where mark geragos, this lawyer based out of los angeles, comes in. he is going to be stepping into this case, taking more of a lead as it goes to trial, he's based out there in los angeles. he's also has more time on his hands and is a little bit cheaper or doesn't have as much of an infrastructure around him as the people that took hunter biden to trial in delaware, would that is abby lowell, another very high profile lawyer. so there's a shift here happening for hunter biden as he heads into this trial, the second trial, where he could risk a conviction that would be quite significant on top of the gun charges that he's also convicted already and kaitlan, there's also this new reporting coming from the new york times that hunter biden asked the state department for help on behalf of ukrainian gas company burisma, and this was at a time when his father, joe
6:23 am
biden, was vice president. >> what are you learning yeah. >> we're learning all of this now that his father is no longer running for a second term in office, the state department is releasing some information obtained by the new york times that hunter biden back in 20 16 when he was a board member at this ukrainian gas company, burisma, he reached out to folks in the u.s us embassy in italy and wanted some help. he wanted some networking for burisma and they, they balked pretty quickly. the internal information that the times was able to obtain through the state department was a commerce department official saying the u.s. government should not be advocating with the government of italy on behalf of this ukrainian company. we're not going to do anything here, but this is just another bullet point on the history of hunter biden trying to capitalize when his father was the vice president on his the family connections, something we know he he's done many times, but
6:24 am
of course we have no evidence that shows that joe biden did anything to help the business interests of hunter biden at that time and hunter biden has been investigated for some time, obviously, facing federal charges on multiple things that he's done in his past but nothing related to foreign lobbying kaitlan. >> thank you so much for your reporting john all right. >> this morning, tropical storm ernesto, just short of hurricane strength right now, is powering its way across the caribbean, leaving flooding and hundreds of thousands of people in its path without electricity torrential rain and when and puerto rico and the virgin islands, so far, ernesto is expected to get stronger as it heads out over the atlantic. largely, i think i'm going to play the role of derek van dam, away from land as it moves into the atlantic, sara only bermuda, it looks like it's in bermuda. >> don't forget bermuda. >> bermuda a state of emergency

6:30 am
the fed could be on track could be on track for a rate cut and cnn business anchor julia chatterley is here this is consistent with that, by the way, and that really is the breaking news. >> he's i think today it's a win for the economists as well because it was absolutely bang in line. encouraging news for consumers as well. you can see on the chart the trend is what's important and i know it feels painful for everybody out there, but consumer prices rises continued to slow. 2.9% for the yearly number that's the rise overall. the month on month was all about housing costs. and that's a problem because that was double the price rises that we saw the last months of the fed would definitely focus on that. price rises, shelter, it was all about that, but food prices also rose car insurance roads. if i show you what fell, because we care about this to obviously given the pressures that people have faced over the last few years, if we've got that, use vehicles, we've seen this a lot. trucks, fs pentagon holiday now is perhaps the time
6:31 am
stop buying those tickets and apparel as well. of course, too, we were expecting some pressure from gas prices and energy. they will flat on the month as well. so that helped with this number as well. the bottom line, you've already pointed out to him, i think this is consistent with the fed starting those interest rate cuts in september, which is good news, but just a final point on this because i did say food prices are fallen there's a reason why people are upset. grocery prices are up 20% over the last four years. so whether it's trump speaking today or harris speaking on friday, i think people want solutions rather than sympathy at this stage. so what should say on those kinds of things we've got the cheers there. yeah. >> with we talk about your sound. the of cheers, that was my market reacting. roseanne it's sort of got its bang for its buck yesterday, which i was talking about. we had monster rises after that producer price inflation yesterday. so i don't think you should see what we see today is a concern you had your positive moves. we now back above where we were before we got that payrolls report
6:32 am
friday and all the chaos that we were talking about last week i'm not surprised to see markets backup at these levels. i'm kind of surprised by how quickly it happened. so not that i want to be a debbie downer morning because it is good news, but that gives me a little bit of caution, but anyway, rate cuts in september, fingers julia chatterley does not like huge swings. we know next thank you so much. >> appreciate it. take new this morning, ukraine says it has taken out a russian fighter jet and captured 100 soldiers in what is being, what it is describing as the biggest attack on russian airfields since the war. >> there began plus a new study revealing young people may be saying and goodbye to alcohol in a big way, it'll be back cnn is live from chicago as democrats unite to offer their support to a new nominee and her running mate hello cnn for complete coverage, the democratic national convention

6:38 am
to have you on this ukrainian activity inside russia. that's been going on for days now, my question to you is to what end? do you think in how far do you see the ukrainians taking this further? >> actually, i think is the answer to that. and maybe even to their surprise because they did achieve enormous surprise with russians. they managed to assemble elements of four brigades, but not just infantry and armor, but also artillery, air defense electronic warfare, and so forth. so it's a real combined arms effort with logistics with him and they managed to break through the not very substantial, but some double lines of defense on the border in that area into kursk, which is of course famous for the largest world war ii armor battle. and the first invasion of russia since world war ii, not just since the latest invasion by russia of ukraine.

what are they doing? well, they're pushing the russians out from this, they're gaining enormous morale boost. their collecting russian prisoners for later exchange for ukrainian prisoners held by russia they have cut a very important rail line that russia uses to send logistics and troops from, say, the moscow region down to the south eastern part of ukraine. and that's quite significant in largely overlooked. and now they continue to expand this it's a huge blow to putin needless to say they are able to solidify this to a degree where i think a lot of us thought this was going to be more of a raid. this has gone on for a week now and the russians are still scrambling and they're having to pull forces from the southern area to react to this. it's obvious that they're border. fourth is in the irregular, the territorial forces and the national guard have been incapable of standing up to the ukrainians who continue actually, to push this out a bit further. their military
6:40 am
commander, general sersky, who by the way, was the one who oversaw the kharkiv offensive, as you may recall, in the fall of the first year that was so successful he has announced that they have control over about 1,000 square kilometers of russian territory. that's maybe not quite a third of the state of rhode island's, so not a huge area in the grand scheme of things, but a very significant achievement by the ukrainian. and it really, i think changes a bit the old cycle the logical impact, or the outlook of in kyiv in particular again, in blue here you can see the area roughly that we think the ukrainians now control. >> we do have this new video we were showing just moments ago. we were talking this is of ukrainians putting up border defenses on that region in ukraine's south chris in preparation for what could be some kind of russian counter attack. what kind of response do you anticipate general from russia?
6:41 am
>> well, so far has been somewhat muddled. there's no clear commander putin has put the administer essentially for emergency affairs in charge of this. i don't know how that works out. what is his headquarters? how does it interface with the military headquarters in that area? as i mentioned, they have reportedly pulled some forces from the southern part of ukraine. i think they're trying to continue their offensive in the southeastern area in donetsk in particular, and not interfere with that. and that does to be very continued to achieve incremental gains against ukrainian forces. and that has to be he continued to be worrisome for the ukrainians. but so far, not a particularly coherent response yet and what the organizational architecture of this will eventually be is not yet clear to the observers out there. eventually they have to really push them forces against this to get the ukrainians out of russian territory but again, not yet clear how precisely they're
6:42 am
going to do that and where the combat power comes from, what it does show is again how relatively in adequate these russian forces inside russia actually our as they're sending all of their main line forces into the offensive in the southeast and holding the line in the south. >> you talked about the accidents ukrainians are taking inside russia. we got that word overnight of these ukrainian airstrike thanks. we believe by drones on for russian airfields. again inside russia, ukrainian officials say this is the biggest attack on russian airfields since the beginning of the we've got about 45 seconds left. general, how much do you think ukraine can continue to strike inside russia i think they're going to continue. >> it will increased tempo. they're producing more and more drones but as i'm sure you've heard, they have a goal of producing 1 million drones in a 12 month period. now, most of those are the short range cheap suicide drones, but
6:43 am
they're also producing longer range and jen, of course, the farther they get into russia, the farther they can reach with these drones. and of course they're trying to degrade the russian air force ability to launch the u.s. very substantial glide bonds which can travel 50, 70 kilometers, and then slammed into cities near the border like kharkiv, which continues to be a problem that's the one where they they held the russian advance outside artillery range, but is still worrisome as well general david petraeus, always great to see you. >> thank you so much for coming on. cnn news central this morning. sara. all right. new for you this morning, more young adults are cutting back on the boos. cnn's meg tirrell is with us again this morning for more on this new poll. how different are they from gen x and baby boomers when it comes to drinking alcohol yes, they're they're pretty big differences that we see in these data. >> this is a survey that gallup has been doing since 2001. and overall, we are seeing a shift in people's added towards
6:44 am
attitudes towards drinking alcohol. >> they see that in this latest study, 45% of americans say that drinking one to two drinks per day is unhealthy. that is the highest they've seen since 2001 in this survey, it's up six percentage points since last year and 18 percentage points just since 2018, and we are seeing major differences in how different generations view drinking alcohol. so those between the ages of 18 and 34, 65% of them say that alcohol negatively affects health and that's pretty dramatically different from people who are in older age groups, 35 to 54 37% say alcohol is bad for your health and over the age of 55, 39% say that we do see however that young people are still drinking alcohol, but they are seeing the biggest decline in drinking if you look at these data, you can see that people 18 to 34 still about 60% and
6:45 am
report drinking alcohol, but that's the blue line there and they're seeing the biggest decline among 35 to 54 year-olds. you see almost 70% drink alcohol and 58% of those over the age of 55. so sara, young people still drink, but they're cutting back and they're increasingly likely to say they think it's bad for your health. >> i remember a time when there was a study that says like 01 glass of wine a night is fine. but there's new study is it you just talked about yesterday concerning alcohols, health effects on older folks. i mean, are young folks right about having a drink or two they are right in this case, more data are emerging in this whole body of evidence increase he's singly suggests the less alcohol you drink, the better it's going to be for your health. >> there was that time sara that we were told drinking red wine is good for you. you shouldn't have it with dinner. that is starting to been debunked. that study you mentioned yesterday suggested that the more people drink per week and this was particularly in older adults, the higher
6:46 am
their likelihood of getting cancer there are heart disease. later on and so increasingly, the messages, the less alcohol, the better, but they are starting to really dig into what kind of alcohol people drink and their habits to really better inform people's behaviors. >> all right. meg tirrell. thank you so much kate. >> a new health warning this morning also about a popular show sugar substitute. we'll have that for you coming up. >> and the moment and michigan man is sent to jail for cursing at a judge the democratic. national convention monday at seven on cnn and streaming on max. >> one of my favorite supplements is kunal turmeric. turmeric helps with healthy joins and inflammation support and cute all has the number one doctor recommended form of turmeric kunal. the brand i trust what would you like to

lauren fox on capitol hill this morning. >> a new health warning about a common sweetener. the study is now linking a sugar substitute to higher risk of blood clots and heart disease. cnn's dr. sanjay gupta has more on the science behind sweeteners what think there's a lot of discussion around the real value of these sugar substitutes, these artificial sweeteners. a lot of people take them in the pursuit of good health trying to lose weight or something like that diabetic certainly can get a benefit from these artificial sweeteners. but there have been some concerns as well. there was a study last year that said there could being an increased association with heart disease and stroke as a result of this so this is really complicated. what is interesting is that they tried to figure out with erythritol specifically erythritol, which is a sugar alcohol. it's something that naturally occurs and fruits but the majority of our consumption, at least in the united states, is through
6:52 am
artificial means. they're fermenting corn for example. it tastes like sugar. it looks like sugar, so it's really good to cook with, for example, and it is generally recognized as safe by the fda. but you then have these concerns about the associations with heart disease and stroke. so in this study, they're the one that's making the headlines. a very small study. it was just 20 people ten people got 30 grams of erythritol. ten people just got sugar. and what they were looking for specifically trying to answer why heart disease and stroke, what they were looking for is does this seem to increase the likelihood of clotting? and what they found was that it did about twice as likely to develop clots if you were taking the erythritol versus sugar, people who are taking the sugar really got no clots and people were taking the erythritol. there was this increase again, i want to point out that there is no there's no reason to believe that you're blood sugar levels, for example, would go up with the artificial sweeteners, which is why it's so potentially
6:53 am
valuable for those who have diabetes but it is a concern obviously, when it comes to other things, clotting heart disease and stroke, i do want to point out what the industry has to say about this. they rightly point out that this is a small study and that the results should be interpreted with caution. as a result, the limited number of participants, a total of ten we're given excessive amounts of erythritol, nearly quadruple the maximum amount approved in any single beverage in the united states. that is true 30 grams. >> but to give you a little bit of context, there a diet soda might have seven grams of erythritol so if you're drinking three or four of these in a day you could start to approach that 30 gram amount, which seems to be problematic. look at again for people who have diabetes, we're watching their blood sugar, sugar substitutes these artificial sweeteners, they can have tremendous value but i think one of the messages here that we're hearing is that you've got to be careful in terms of how much you consume. i think
6:54 am
people generally know you shouldn't eat too much sugar nine teaspoons, they say for men every day, six teaspoons for women. but i think you have to start applying the same sort of thinking two things like erythritol, the sugar substitute if you're getting too much of that, that could also be problematic just because you're having diet drinks or foods doesn't mean you can suddenly eat as much of those things as you want. i think that's one of the real prevailing messages here. and it's also worth pointing out if you're doing this for weight loss alone eating foods with artificial sweeteners long long-term. the date has become pretty clear that long-term weight-loss doesn't really happen with those foods as well. so something to keep in mind. but those are the headlines at least when it comes to erythritol sanjay, thank you. and you can scan right there the qr code on your screen to submit your questions about what we're just talking about with sanjay artificial sweeteners. sanjay, we'll be back tomorrow to answer your questions. >> all right. >> a michigan judge has gone
