2:05 am
i think who really brought the decision i ever made that of house down here and she did not course, was the man who married stick with the vein that she camila harris ten years ago, had or the line that she had talking about his wife's second used throughout the 2016 campaign, which was that when gentleman, doug emhoff, taking the stage last night at the they go low, we go high. she dnc, making the case, his did have some criticism saying, wife's greatest strength is her empathy, but also saying you know, going small is not that she has no problem standing up to bullies. presidential, but she clearly >> he talked about one of the took it to donald trump in a things he says he loves the most about his wife, her laugh, way that it really alluded to even their personal feelings which is something that trump about how he has demonized the has tried to use against her we obamas in politics text, it's talked for an hour and we like when they go low go big laughed. >> but you know, that laugh i and punch them in you think love that laugh. laugh. and about sort of the idea of the head and the heart. obviously obama is always you know, like look with kim passion and barak obama yes. conviction. should leave from >> so she's i would say she's a believed that were ever we come from whatever we look like we're strongest when we fight heart, but she is kinda like the fighter in the heart. she for what we believe in not just was kind of giving not just the against what we fear vice audience, but surrogates and perhaps vice president harris president harris was returning herself, the script to use and to chicago from milwaukee while her husband was on stage, according to the white house, she had air force to circle for it was a script that evolves
2:06 am
about ten minutes before empowering women, empowering landing, so that she could people of color, empowering watch his speech. people who believe in civility, >> meghan hays is back with us. we did we should note that sort of a permission structure she's also a consultant for for some maybe moderate republicans or suburban the democratic national convention here. in addition to housewives to also vote for the being the fall former messaging harris ticket and the room was director for the biden white house, meghan setting aside the fact that it probably was a pain for everyone on the ground electrified and obama himself to have be held in a ground stop by air force two. they made a joke saying like a mentally ill person dumb enough to follow michelle obama. it clearly wanted to show that this was a moment where the was sort of true. it took her leg two thirds, three quarters vice president was watching because she had gone to do this other rally while he made this of the speech to warm up and get the crowd where where she had been the room was speech, which i actually thought was interesting that she wasn't here in the room to hear great, but what was your completely mesmerized by her sense of how emhoff up and shelby talcott, i want to show everybody a little bit presented her last night? more of what we heard from >> but he is incredible. i michelle obama, because the think that we just, you know, a lot of people don't know him, especially and don't really rallying cry do something know her and don't know her became a call all in response personal inside the vice president, you don't really throughout this speech, we can have more most public facing listen to a little bit of what profile. you know, the president always overshadows that sounded like. let's look you. so it's really good to see you that personal side of her and to see that no, she is a mom, she's a step mom. she has raised these children with we've got to do if we see and their blended family. a lot of people can relate to that in the us. but i also think the one thing i thought was
2:07 am
interesting about doug, you you we when we got to put down that as the second or the first lady phone and do something we start or the second spouse, you have feeling tired if we start feeling that dread, creep them a role in your volunteer back and we got to pick position, but people expect you ourselves up. to have a profile and it's interesting to see him take >> water on her face. and what more of a center stage out there because it'll be interesting to see if they are elected. what he will do with i mean, you could hear it right that position? and in with his platform too. so it's good to there, right in the crowd, just roaring back at her. people to get to know him >> yeah. and it's really a call to action, right. and i think because he is part of this ticket as well margaret talev, the first part of that is there was a little bit of, you particularly notable because know, i'm a cool dad coming there have been questions about how camila harris and her from that's always what the allies in particular should cool dads do what were your respond to some of these more takeaways from him? love it personal attacks that we're hearing from da donald trump very red, very gen x to me, the and clearly, michelle obama is new radical those what's the saying do something you have to name of the the band which you respond to them, you have to would know if you were in your address them, which is a little bit of difference from what 50s. >> but i would put them in the anything. but radical category some in the party have told us, which is just ignore it, right. like they're like, it's the same song for bar crawls all go back to the old sort of over the eastern seaboard, michelle obama of, of go high, somewhere between new jersey be better know, she wants and you know, like washington dc so i think he did people to do do something and address these things. and so it personalize her. he also so i really was a call to action and it was a call to action that think part of his shtick was to clearly the room was revved up make her a little bit less
2:08 am
scary for people who have heard things like san francisco radical and like you're looking about one or the other places at mr. quarters up and you're we saw this husband and wife like, come on really like totally supportive dad and his pair go after donald trump was in brock obama's speech there extended the experiences of his sort of youth is bringing up as was this moment where you could see on his face, he was he shared them with the officially talking about crowd audience we're not scary to sizes. clearly something else suburban voters in swing underneath it. let's watch states. and i think that was part of the point also, shelby, i mean, the reality is this is that moment it has been a constant stream of gripes and a pretty i mean, this would be if if she gets elected uh really obviously unique reality grievances that that's actually we'd have the first, first been getting worse now that he is afraid of losing a comma gentlemen and while obviously hillary clinton was nominated in 2016, her husband occupies a there's the childish much different and particular nicknames, the crazy conspiracy space in the democratic party as a former president, it theories this weird obsession wasn't the same kind of vibe, with crowd sizes meghan hays. i guess, a word that seems to be getting why don't you action as what we saw last night. >> yeah, absolutely and it's interesting because as you both said, he isn't as well known. thank you i think, you know, and so this was an opportunity
2:09 am
to introduce himself, but also the obama is worth tax quite again to i completely agree with what you said to sort of viscerally by donald trump when humanize her against these they were in the white house. and i think that this is way to donald trump's trump attacks get under his skin. and this is the way to do it in a way that because the big thing here at is not so direct and not so that dnc, and it's i think particularly important now that obvious. and i think, you know kamala harris is the nominee over joe biden, people, michelle obama probably gave the best speech she's given. i think it's amazing, but she's somebody that people already out here. it's so inspiring and also people i think reacted knew is the theme behind all of to her speech the way did because she's not out there these speeches is how do we all the time. she's not out there talking all the time and define camila harris? and that is exactly what donald trump's she's not in the forefront of the party. and so i think it's team is doing. this is the just inspiring when people see her out there and she was it dnc's. this is a democratic was probably the best speech i've ever seen her give. it party's time to have center was incredible. and i also, you stage to define her. and so know, obviously obama gives you're seeing all these different aspects are seeing amazing speeches all the time while, but i think that the way doug emhoff talk about her they're doing it and kind of digging under his skin is personal side, her family side. really going to get a visceral you're seeing michelle and reaction from him. so it's the barak obama talk about, okay. next couple of days should be it's time to unite behind her. pretty interesting from donald trump interesting. she is sort of r next leader >> indeed i should note that and so i'm curious to see in typically we do invite always the next two days how different any republican onto our factions and different people panel's. we don't want to call it anyone individually, but it continue to pull out different is very early and or later so facets and define her in that hopefully, the said person will way. be joining us shortly during >> all right. still ahead here the show, will give them a on cnn this morning, the dnc chance to respond to the obamas roll call was turned up lil

2:25 am
that coalition and appealing to some of these trump voters. how do you think they are threading the needle? it isn't working? >> look, i think having a former white house staffer do it as kind of yuck to be honest, i don't think that's going to move voters. >> you're talking about stephanie's definitely we're going to we're going to try to play a little bit of her speech here in a second. >> i do think the mesa mayor that was a compelling choice in fact, he sat on the set last night and talked about what went into his decision and it was really pumped i'll see based in many ways about the border and his frustration with how he felt that donald trump had impeded the senate bill. and i found it pretty compelling, didn't necessarily agree with them, but i do think that kind of message can resonate. but former staffers, adam kinzinger, occur those folks are tired and true already i don't think they're going to move the needle much, but lieutenant governor of georgia, mayor of mesa, those are folks that are on the fringes when we're talking about races in the battleground states where it might be 10,000 votes or less. but that's not nothing fair.
2:26 am
>> i was just on the farmer staff piece. i know you spent a significant amount of time with these folks in private and really season so they are so i do think that matters. i know i spent a significant time with president biden. i saw him in situations in moments that people don't see. so you can speak a little bit more to the personal side, so i wouldn't discredit her completely. they're one of the things that stood out to me about what stephanie grisham did on stage margaret well, i mean, two things. >> one she talked about how she witnessed donald trump denigrating his own supporters as quote, unquote, basement dwellers. she also they displayed over her shoulder a text message she had sent to melania trump on january 6 asking, would you like to tweet about supporting peaceful protests, but can deming violence and melania trump wrote back simply no, that was clearly part of the message they wanted to get across here. last night yes there there are obvious reasons why this kind of speakers are important at
2:27 am
the convention because you are trying to reach i'm sort of wobbly center right voters or truly in the middle of voters and others supposedly not that many, but they're actually a lot living in battleground states are and what we swear but i also think that what is underlying a lot of this is the fact that as much enthusiasm as we've seen in this convention hall this week. >> and on the road over the last few weeks, among the democratic base, there is a real concern in these conversations are happening off mic and in a hallway conversations this week or bar conversations this week. there's a real concern among many democrats that this does not reflect the reality on the ground in the country that polling is soft, that there's still several weeks in the race, and that in those battleground states the numbers are not strong enough to feel as confident as the people in this room feel. and you hear a lot of what you heard some of it to michelle obama's remarks last night saying like you can't take it for granted, we have to get out there and stuff
2:28 am
that's not just a line that you put in the speech this is somebody that democrats are really worried about in michigan like georgia. yes. geoff duncan is going to tell you that georgia is winnable. the polls are going to tell you that would be a huge thing. and people who can vote, but don't usually vote would have to come out in force to make that happen, right. >> and well, i mean, in look, if if anyone can help her do it, it's the obamas. but i think your point's very well taken i mean, when i talked to strategy that republicans are watching georgia, but they'll say we're not there yet. wow, worried. we're not that worried about it yet. yeah. and i think to your point to the reason probably that these folks okay. >> son stage or so aggressively optimistic is because again, it goes back to that comment. the vibes, right? if you are projecting confidence, then the voters feel confident and they feel like this is somebody that they can get behind. so it is important in that aspect, but it also runs the risk of
2:29 am
getting people to complacent, right? we're up so big that we don't have to worry about it anymore. so it's a really fine line and that's really interesting point. i think. >> all right, i also want to touch on this donald trump yesterday, confirming that he's open to having rfk junior play a role in his administration yes. if the independent candidate decides to drop out of the race and endorsed trump according to kennedy's running mate that is apparently a very real possibility. >> there's two options that we're looking at and one is staying in forming that new party, but we run the risk of a camila hair camila harris and waltz presidency because we draw votes from trump well, we draw somehow more votes from trump or we walk away right now and join forces with donald trump.

>> cnn previously reported rfk junior had made a similar pitch to the harris campaign, offering an endorsement in exchange for a role in her administration. here is camp did not respond to that publicly. trump appeared open to embracing the idea. cnn's kristen holmes asked him about it at a campaign stop in michigan yesterday. watch this i like him a lot. >> i respect him a lot. i probably would if something like that, what happened he's very different kind of a guy, very smart guy. all right and i would be honored by that endorsement ok kind of a guy,

very smart guy. all right and i would be honored by that endorsement okay. >> panel is back this seems i will say david like when nicole shanahan says out loud, well, if if we stay in, we run the risk of a harris walls presidency. i mean, they're saying out loud what i interviewed rfk last year. and pushed him because a lot of members of his family are opposed to him because they thought at the time he was betraying joe biden was going to get donald trump elected. and he said, well, no, no, no, this is actually about me. that doesn't actually seem to be the case based on these comments.
5:32 am
>> sure doesn't look i think the math for them, it's a different equation when it was president biden in the race, i think right now they do cut more from the vice president and her ticket than they do. >> donald trump. so that being said you know, that's not an insignificant number, whether it's three to 5%, i'm not sure i want to push back on that a little bit though because it does the polling seems to maybe dispute that a little bit in that democrats seem to be coming home to harris there seemed to be what the kennedy name provided some space for democrats who thought joe biden was too old to say, well, i'm gonna go with that guy and that's gone now. >> i think i think with that ticket, i mean, look, that's why you've seen them drop fairly substantially as much as you can given where they were pulling before i think right now, they're still cutting again the harris type of voter who is dissatisfied with trump perhaps. but really was looking at looking past biden in
5:33 am
looking at harris, i think that's where we're at today and again, if you take a michigan and pennsylvania heck, go to go down into the sunbelt states. that's not an insignificant number of votes that are available to them. and so if they came aboard, do i think everybody would follow them know. do i think enough wood that could tip them? balance? sure. could think. i think donald trump's answers is interesting too, because i remember months and months ago when rfk junior was really sort of semis significant in the polls we had internal polling from the campaign showing that from the trump campaign showing that rfk junior was taking more votes from them. and so this has been something that donald trump's campaign has been eyeing for a really long time. and i think his answer there is notable. i think they're recognizing that it's race is so close right now that every percentage vote or every possible percentage vote counts could make that. >> i think nobody really knows who is going to take it from. but what we've seen in so many focus groups this year, that we
5:34 am
institute has been involved in is that he appeals the most to independent voters but there's who don't want either and it and most of them haven't done a lot of homework on him, but they like the idea that he could bring something different to politics i think what trump may be doing is thinking, if he comes over to our side, maybe that brings some of those voters who weren't going to write for either one of us over, right? >> fair enough. all right. shelby talcott. thank you very much for joining us this morning. i really appreciate it all right. >> coming up next here on cnn this morning, kate cox texas mother who was forced to flee her state to obtain an emergency abortion, may a very happy surprise announcement at the dnc last night, we're going to talk to her about that. >> plus more from the dnc, the grandson of former president jimmy carter took the stage on behalf of his grandfather though his body may be week tonight, his spirit is as strong as ever my grandfather

evening went start with abortion rights have really taken center stage here at the dnc. >> donald trump has tried to downplay the impact that that issue will have in this election. your view of that? >> there's no downplaying it. i mean, kate cox last night the first night when the air went out of the room with that powerful moment where no child should have to have their parent's child and so this is an issue that's front and center for voters across the country. it's literally in on the ballot in maryland were trying to enshrine those rights in our state constitution and everywhere i go in baltimore county and in our race for congress, we're hearing this is an issue that is top of mind for all voters and that trans tens party affiliation. >> one of the other things we saw last night on the convention stage was a speech from angela alsobrooks, who is the democratic nominee for senate in maryland. i talk to us a little bit about the contours of that race should be the first black woman elected to the senate from the state of maryland, where she to win, but
5:42 am
she does have a potentially formidable republican opponent larry hogan, absolutely formidable republican opponent larry hogan, very popular former governor angela is an amazing colleague of mine, fellow county executive she will be a barrier breaking us, senator. we are confident we're going to win because this is a different race when you think about the context in which they're running, we're not talking about reelecting governor hogan. we're talking about whether or not the senate falls into democratic or republican hands. and that's the conversation we're having in maryland. and issues like reproductive freedom and abortion rights are not just on the ballot in terms of our constitutional limit, but they're on the ballot in this race. and so when you ask who are you going to caucus with republicans and make mitch mcconnell? jardi leader in the senate. that's real in the minds of voters in maryland. and so what's why we think angela is going to winch did a great job last night, proud to have her representing maryland so earlier this year, i interviewed leora lara trump, the co-chair of the rnc, and i actually asked her about her

5:44 am
endorse hogan and then disavow him at the same breath. so you know, i think as we sort of think about this race, this is not boding well for the republicans in maryland's not boding well for governor hogan. he's a nice guy. i worked closely with them there were some places where we worked well together, including the response to the pandemic and the covid. but i think this really speaks to the disarray that republicans are seeing, especially in maryland, but across the country as well. and while we have so many high-profile republicans here at this convention talking about why they're supporting camila harris for president i grew up in maryland, so i'm really familiar with that history where it's in many ways a very democratic state, but they elect republican members of congress. they elect republican governors from time to time also, larry hogan is beloved in maryland across party lines trump complicates things for larry hogan understanding all right. coming up next here in our next hour of cnn this morning, 82 city tante, while democrats packed
