>> so what they're speaking to right. that there's the fact that he's a much more private person. she of course, loves her fans, loves me in a celebrity, and that may have contributed to why benefit to 0.0 did not last nearly as long as a lot of people thought that they would i mean, do you hold out for better benefits, three-point. oh, lisa, i absolutely do not. i don't think there should have been a benefit to 0.0, but that's just me. i understand we all love, love and no one loves loves more than jennifer lopez, apparently. >> i mean, combining all worlds, maybe you apply what brock obama said last night from the, from the convention stage, at some sometimes it's often the sequel is not as good as the original. i don't know. maybe that's what we're looking at here. >> i love how you're you cross in those dreams. that's, that's impressive doing my job, doing my job, it's great to see you, lisa. >> thank you so much. in the next hour of cnn new central begins now good morning from
5:01 am
chicago. >> i'm john berman with sara sinder at the united center. that democratic national convention. kate bolduan is in new york. today is kind of tim walz day here, the governor of minnesota he will be the big speaker tonight, but this morning this whole city still very much in an obama high. >> it's true less sugar high know it was an obama hide late last night both obama's took the stage there. they're showing some love. both delivered blistering attacks against donald trump. and then told democrats what they must do. now if they lie about and they we've got to do something, if we see a ban and we when we got to put down that phone and do something we start feeling tired if we start feeling that dread creeping back in, we got them he's ourselves up, throw water on
5:02 am
her face and what we only have two-and-a-half months. y'all, to get this done? >> if there was anything that you could say in fat ugly was that she stole the night. she blew the roof off of things for president obama, though, followed up with a similar message of urgency. >> and a moment of unity all across america in big cities and small towns away from all the noise the ties that bind us together are still there we still coach little league and look out for our elderly neighbors. >> we still feed the hungry in churches and mosques and synagogues and temples we share the same pride winter olympic athletes compete for the gold because because the vast
5:03 am
majority of us do not want to live in a country that's bitter and divided all right, with us now cnn political director david chalian, dhl, great to see you here, has put on your your political director coat decoder ring there. >> okay. all right. >> that sound from former president barak obama he was trying to do something that was not throw away stuff there that was not. >> and i think you can draw a direct 20 year long line from his speech at john kerry's convention in boston, where he talked about red america and blue america, right to this, i mean, this is, this is the work his pulse political work over his time, which is to try and remind america about america's story. and so this wasn't this to me, was not a call for unity. let's all get together. this was a contrast, peace in his argument last night that was trying to remind the
5:04 am
country that there is a lot of shared value. there's a shared value system whether it is you coach little league or you're going to feed the needy through your church or synagogue. that so many americans can identify with that far more so then the number of americans that would like to live in a constant state of division which our politics has become over time. and i just think that what barak obama was doing there was trying to elevate beyond the hourly to and fro of our political battles and the sound-bite of the day and the back-and-forth on that to some larger calling in this race i do want to talk about michelle obama because you just cannot help. but even he himself said i'm the fool that decided to have the speech after my wife very true stave this turned out to be very true. you had no lights i remember a time and i know you do when the line from her that really caught on was when they go low we go high.
5:05 am
>> but last night that is not what happened. and it received perhaps even bigger applause and a bigger reaction from her and what she said to the crowd is this a different democratic party than what we saw back in 2016? and 2020? well, it's a it is certainly a different nominee than we saw in 2016 or 2020. >> those hillary clinton, joe biden had been on the public stage for a it extraordinarily long time. kamala harris, still a relative newcomer to america, look at the polls, i mean, a third of americans say they don't know what she stands for yet, right? so this was and michelle obama of course, after you know, eight years now of donald trump since that go logo high speech in 2016 donald trump is in a new context for americans. and so i think michelle obama took a different approach. i thought it was interesting that both obamas
5:06 am
made the trump piece of this, the trump take down the trump contrast so sacred to both of their arguments her in the more sort of i thought she was like a soul cycle instructor for this he more in his professorial ways, but i think that they both saw that as a central mission in addition to the testimony about camila harris and you talked about passing the torch, which they mentioned. i mean, obama, barak obama, the president, literally said passing the torch. so it's not subtle with michelle obama. there is something that she did which was almost we're passing the torch over joe biden, she didn't mention joe biden. >> yeah. >> that was hard not to notice, right? she had zero mention of joe biden, the person that her husband put on the ticket and sort of elevated him to this new potential in his long storied career. and yet barak obama did make sure to dedicate
5:07 am
several paragraphs of the speech to joe biden and to give him a tribute, perhaps a, that was one reason why michelle obama didn't feel it was necessary. she, it was the husband's speech, but also we know that michelle obama saw her role here as far different. it wasn't to check every box of political speech and that's the thing about michelle obama. she's not a figure, she transcends politics in many ways, and she understands the power of that. you know, when she walked out on the stage, i thought about her book tour when it came out the best-selling book, how she played two arenas like this and, and she just has a different piece and i thought what she did also listen to them this about the argument against trump, somebody who inherited generational wealth versus the way many americans sort of deal with their day-to-day lives she understands that most of us will never be afforded the grace of failing forward we will never benefit from the affirmative action of generational wealth if the
5:08 am
business, or choke in a crisis. we don't get a second, third, or fourth chance i don't think i don't think that's just a red meat base play there. i think that is trying to appeal to a large swath of americans who feel maybe they don't get second-third are the fourth chances perhaps even some who are not aligned to support kamala harris. i think what she was trying to do there is sort of put donald trump in an isolated place and again, broaden the appeal to a larger segment of people. >> and let's not forget what happened with the supreme court and affirmative action him and area. a lot of messages within that message about failing up people in corporate america see it, children see it. people going to college see it it was
5:09 am
a very touching speech. and if you look online, that line and the black jobs line are the two that people are going absolutely nuts when it comes to social media, but don't go anywhere, okay. where he will stay here and be part of this conversation. they should because with us now is democratic congressman from new jersey wall-to-wall, new jersey here at the desk is ron josh gottheimer, who is also the co-chair of the problem solvers caucus. thank you so much for being with us. thanks for having me. i'm sure you like the new jersey music last night as not loves that. i mean, you know, it's a thing so you were there i mean, what did you what was your takeaway from last night? how do you think that helps get vice president harris elected? i mean, the energy, not just in this room, but i'm not just talking to every delegate and not just when we left. >> and you saw people. i mean the how energized and fired up people are here sure. i think is emblematic of how fired up they are at home. and what i'm hearing from people is just how ready they are for november. they understand not only what we have to do to win, but what
5:10 am
this is about. and i think that's what we're talking about here, right? what what this is what the difference between what trump is for and against. and obviously what we're for and expanding for it to more families. you've taught her over the last days and there's point was made again last night. who were championing right. making childcare more affordable, more housing, right. for making housing more affordable for families. obviously, fighting for reproductive freedom and how critical that is. and the fact that we need to bring the country together. and i've heard a few what you said, what the former president said last night and obviously what michelle obama said last night is how we got to bring everyone together a positive message, unity. and i think that is the big difference between their convention in our convention. and i think that's about reaching out to all americans, not just democrats who are in this room, but of course two democrats and republicans. and that's what we're going to need to bring this home strong in november congressman, you're from the problem solvers caucus. what problems do democrats need to solve after this convention? but even before that, for tonight out, do they deal with how big that
5:11 am
was and how well that went over and now tonight, the vice president has to bring it. the vice president pretty good. nominee, even less my colleague i love tim, he brings a lot, right? he he's really great at reaching out to everybody and shows what this party is about so i'm very excited for tonight. you've got former president clinton, who, by the way, always as good to give a speech and really knows how to bring everyone in the big tent together, not just in the democratic party, but across the country. he's, he's phenomenal at that and so i'm excited to see what he has to say. and i think the big problem that we need to solve is making sure that everybody here is what we stand for. you've got a very truncated election process here. so in those days, how do we make sure everyone knows what the vice president stands for? right? about affordability and what she's been talking about and make a choice. and these issues that i know americans are with her on, and how do we make sure we get that message out and they get to know her? they've been very short on details. only thing we've really heard from foreign presence, trump says he wants to impose a 20% tariff, which is going to jack
5:12 am
up taxes on people and so i think it's getting those details out there. >> congressman. i don't know if you adopt the moderate liberal or not seen as somebody more in the middle as part of that problem solvers caucus. you see both baraka, michelle obama last night reminding the delegates that this is going to be a very close election. and so while many people left here with the euphoria, you describe, this is going to be a pretty close election. i would imagine. and i'm wondering if you think you see what the trump campaign and the republicans are sort of trying to do in the frame around kamala harris, his comrade camila, and the communist and far too liberal and outside the mainstream do you have concerns that that could take hold as they are beginning to do that as somebody who sort of plays to the middle in your party. i'm wondering if you think there's danger you're there for her. >> well, i'm somebody who believes we've got to bring people together and i think the prosecutor message which she was and strong on i think is important. >> you talked about the importance of making sure that we support law enforcement, our
5:13 am
veterans, our firefighters. you're you're hearing that message, but i think brings people together. and so no, i think they're very confused on what to do the other side, they're throwing everything they can come up with every day hey, something new at aren't seeing what sticks and so far, nothing is working because she's focused on actually bringing the country together and moving the country forward. and i think this message, which is right, which is they're looking at going backward. and i think that is a big contrast. common sense versus there extremism. and so i think they're going to keep trying to do anything they can to stop her. but right now, there's so much positive energy and people want change in the positive. they don't want to go back, right? they want someone who can move forward and build on the 16 million new jobs. just last administration, a ton of accomplishment on the infant bipartisan infrastructure legislation, pact act for veterans, right? common sense gun safety legislation. that's all stuff they want. they certainly don't want somebody who's going to rip down choice and reproductive freedom. and there are differences here. and i think the more they, they, they frankly are flowering. on the other side trying to figure out what to do. and i think we
5:14 am
just got to focus on what we're about bringing the country together and moving forward. all right. congressman josh gottheimer however, thanks so much for being with us, david chalian, great to see you. thank you for sticking around you, jersey lot of jersey oh, you guys here. >> phil murphy last i was one of the better lines, but what he's got, he's got the boss playing in the background and it goes, i'm governor phil murphy were from new jersey baby you're not you're suckers. new jersey to jersey boys are here boys are here. >> it was good. it was good right back to you guys. so after years of insults and spreading false birther conspiracy theories about them, donald trump. >> now offering kind words about the obamas. >> we have the tape we will play it. and both campaigns have made clear they will be spending a lot of time in battleground michigan, the state's governor got a huge round of applause that's night during the roll call. and

5:20 am
do all those three things if you were on the floor what did, you hear that would appeal to those in arizona? a very important state in this coming election well, sara, one thing you hear in that room and in other arenas around the country now is an incredible amount of enthusiasm. >> gabby and i were in glendale last week with kamala harris and tim waltz and i've never seen anything like that of a political rally before and last night was just off the charts. excitement now michelle obama about former president obama. >> and it's just really exciting. and arizona, you're right as a key part of the equation here for kamala harris to win, i strongly feel she's going to win arizona. we've got some work ahead of us. i'm going to work incredibly hard over the next 75 days. we're going to get them across the finish line. she's got to be the next president because the option of having donald trump
5:21 am
drag us back into the past is just something i just can't see this country doing. and there's tremendous amount of risk there one of the things that has been commented on was sort of the ironic moment in the convention. you had bernie sanders, a democratic socialist from vermont, independent senator speaking followed by governor jb pritzker, who noted on stage that he is a billionaire. so is that irony or those different messages senator, or is it, is there one democratic message? >> well, i think it shows that we're a big ten last night also, mayor john giles republican mayor from mesa, arizona was on that stage talking about why republicans do not have to be beholden to the republican party of today? in arizona, the republican party was john mccain's republican party until around 2020 until donald trump over a
5:22 am
four-year period in the white house. basically destroyed the republican party in the state of arizona and which is really a sad thing. i mean, john mccain was a hero of mine. i'm in john mccain's senate seat. it's important for our country, for our democracy to have, to stable normal parties. and that's not true for the republicans anymore. and that's why we see people like mayor giles. there and other republicans. i think we're going to see more far as the, as the week progresses. >> yeah. you will. they are scheduled to speak. there are quite a few republicans who are showing up here and very publicly coming out against donald trump. i do want to ask you because you talked about donald trump sort of becoming arizona going for trump it. back in the 2016 election i'm curious about immigration because i know it's a huge issue in your state and that is something that donald trump tends to pull well on immigration and economy are the two top things that poll after poll say that americans are
5:23 am
concerned about. do you think that vice president kamala harris? has to address immigration in her speech well, we're going to have to see what she has to say tomorrow. >> i no insight into what her speech is going to be, but on trump's polling on immigration, he should not poll well, i agree with you that right now he does i'm going to make a strong case for why he shouldn't, which is that we had a very strong border security bill. we negotiated with the white house with camila harris, with president biden, democrats and republicans got together. >> and we were meeting republicans on the 50 yard line here we were meeting them on the ten yard line on there their side of the field. >> much of the stuff in there, i supported and wanted to see. but donald trump, this is the most hypocritical thing i've ever seen in politics, a guy who talks about this issue all the time when we finally had a chance to address it through strong legislation. he told
5:24 am
republicans in the senate that they were not allowed to vote for it. so they didn't walk away from this bill. they ran away from it because he wanted this for the election. he made it very clear. he needed this issue to win an election it's most craven thing i think i've seen in three-and-a-half years on capitol hill center, what do you think the biggest obstacle is right now to a harris victory in arizona? >> well, i believe she's going to win arizona but in arizona, statewide elections my election in 2020 and in 2022 were very close. we were a very diverse state and we've got a lot of independence. there are more registered independents in arizona than democrats or republicans. >> so it's about bringing people together. >> and she has clearly a candidate that can bring people i mean, what did donald trump care about when he was
5:25 am
president between 2017 and 2021 basically three things. he wanted to take away. women's reproductive rights. he wanted to shred our alliances then he wanted to give a big tax cut to himself and other billionaires. and he was successful in all three of those camila harris is about the future and she's about looking after everyday americans and american families so for that reason, she is clearly the person that should lead this country senator mark kelly from arizona, we know you've got a busy day here, one and all over the place. we will see you here tonight. thanks so much for being with us. i appreciate your time there, john thank you both. and we'll have you back. all alright. appreciate your time today. donald trump and his running mate, jd vance, will be in the battleground state of north carolina, again after last night's speech, as well. kind of the same praise for the obamas that he did yesterday? yes, he praised them with sas,

slash vote for yours she brought manufacturing jobs back to the united states of america and as governor, tim walz signed the largest infrastructure investment in minnesota history. >> and on the other hand we have donald trump and jd vance and let's be clear if they win, if they win working people like my friends here from the teamsters will pay the price democratic senator gary peters of michigan there on stage last night and cutting straight to an important focus for part of the democratic convention.
5:31 am
>> union support, union voters and the issues that matter to them. peters was joined on stage the buy a dozen members of the teamsters last night, their presence highlighting how important union votes are in battleground michigan and also how the teamsters is an organization has not yet endorsed either commonly, her as any candidate, either kamala harris or donald trump. and you will remember that teamsters president sean o'brien gave a fiery speech. at last month's republican convention and chen joining me right now is michigan some tenant governor garlin gilchrist. it's great to see you, lieutenant governor. thank you for coming in. how important would a teamsters endorsement be for you all and the harris campaign to win in michigan what's important is the supportive but teamsters members and those workers who are flanking governor peters, we showed that their enthusiasm, their hard work, that fact that they are working more than they've worked in a generation, thanks to the biden harris administration to vice president harris is focused on making sure that we rebuild america in a way that works for everyone.
5:32 am
>> erica, it would be a boon, have the endorsement, but we know that we're going to get in and do the work and teamsters in michigan are knocking doors and calling their members. i think they're going to turn out for vice president harris and governor walz to the high level the, latest polling we've seen in battleground michigan is that voters in michigan, they rank as top issues. economy, abortion, and immigration as their top is their top concerns donald trump is still leading harris on the economy and on immigration. that was the case when biden was top of ticket and now it continues with harris. why haven't democrats specifically, when it comes to the presidential been able to convince voters otherwise first and foremost, vice president harris is close the gap when it's come to a big difference on the economy. she's going to continue to tell her story. she was in detroit a couple of months ago talking about her opportunity agenda, and now she's making space for everyone to have access to a dream of health and wealth. whereas donald trump was in michigan just yesterday talking about a dark vision for america because usually rather than the bright economic possibility that vice president harris is
5:33 am
talking about, whether that's creating jobs, bringing back manufacturing, but also opened indoors the innovation economy her vision is one that everyone can see themselves don i want to ask you about some more of what donald trump said yesterday. he was in michigan. he's trying to counter program. he attacked harris in part for being too liberal for the people of michigan. let me play what he said she is, as you know, the most radical left person ever even thought of for high office, certainly for the office of president people don't know the real kamala. >> but i do when people that do what i do, they also know. but she is so far left that nobody's can even imagine at her real thoughts are there if perception that kamala harris is far-left are too liberal sticks with voters in michigan, how big of a problem is that for your chances? well, the perception and the clear
5:34 am
reality is donald trump is to sue, but they pronounced her name correctly. and he is to racists for the state of michigan. the fact that he went to the birthplace of the kkk and rsa on purpose one month to the day after there were heil hitler chance beam being walked through the streets to echo a rally that he was so much aviance in west michigan speaks to the message that he was really trying to bring and communicate with vice president harris, who's been in michigan more than any vice president has been in more than 50 years. they show up all over michigan to respond to that. neither to michigan. and she's talking about lowering costs, she's talking about more affordable prescription drugs. she's talking about creating jobs. she's talking about more affordable health care. and i think that's the values that are not liberal or not circuited. there american, they're michigan values, and that's what people want to see and that's what we're going to deliver when i started periscope, the next president trump campaign is made the point and donald trump himself made the point that also that joe biden made a stop in that very same city back in 2021 i think to push back on what you're saying about the kkk regardless, here's the big as
5:35 am
the biggest everything with the president did and what trump did, the president would he came to how to go to the training center for the industrial for the operating engineers and see people who are providing a pathway to skills, method and new jobs have been created by the bipartisan infrastructure law. >> he was there two days that law was signed by him in november of that year, but he also spoke to that history and spoke to the future of that community of our state and our country is that we can evolve beyond the racism in the past rather than going there on purpose to reflect it and basking the way that donald trump did timing there. >> you're saying in the sequence of events you see matters there the uncommitted vote in the michigan primary, it was a thing. it also sparked a protest, vote movement beyond michigan over anger of then joe biden's handling of the israel hamas war. the uncommitted movement. they had asked to speak for a speaking slot at the democratic convention, as far as i've seen, that has not been agreed to or announce that it was it has been a loud do
5:36 am
you think they should get a speaking slot? >> well, i think the more important conversations are already happening, the fact that leaders from their american and muslim community in the state of michigan that had the largest arab american vote. some community outside of relations, we tend to think, but do you think in those conversations is speaking but it's not as important. do you think those conversations have led to are you confident that kamala harris on the campaign has done enough to win back the support of the what was it more than 100,000 democratic primary voters that voted uncommitted in the primary the fact that vice president harris actually met with those leaders is what's is what matters. and that's helping build the relationship and build that trust. donald trump will never meet with the community in this way. he will be a disaster for the american muslim community and for the war that's going on. he won't make sure that hostages come home. he won't make sure that people stop dying in gaza because harris who has called for a ceasefire, who has continued to it's working toward peace there. she's going to be the one that's going to deliver that she's the right leader for going forward on this issue. >> lieutenant governor of michigan a one final question,

5:43 am
this now are cnn political commentators, shermichael singleton and kate bedingfield can't i want to start with you and try to push it forward a little bit because i haven't found anyone at least here in chicago who watch this, who wasn't thrilled with what they saw last night. >> so it was what it was every democrat is like on crack this morning how do you turn that into success for the next 70 plus? stays? >> well, i think actually what the obamas did last night was lay out a really effective, really convincing messaging path for the democrats. actually think you've seen camilla harris and tim walz kind of take as you, as you saw her come to the top of the ticket, i think you've seen them embrace this idea, which is that one of the ways to beat donald trump is to take away this notion that he is all strength and that he's strong and that he's frightening. and i think what the obamas did so effectively last night is kind of say that's, that's an allusion. it doesn't mean that
5:44 am
he hasn't done terrible things to the discourse in this country. obviously, you heard them really effectively talk about the hateful things he has said over his time in public life. i don't think they were diminishing the ways in which he has been detrimental to our public discourse in our politics. but they were also saying you know, he's, he's a little man, he's a sad man. and taking away some of that kind of power that trump really he feeds on this notion that he's this great strength, the scraped strong man i think is an effective way to go at him. and i think you'll see harrison trump. sorry, harrison walls continue to do that on the campaign trail. >> i'm playing petty this morning so i'm going to bring it back to the black jobs line as a republican political strategist, how much do you hate, how good that line? what i mean, look, sara the obamas and i said this earlier. >> they are incredibly gifted orators. there's just no doubt
5:45 am
about that i have a lot of adoration for them, a lot of respect for them and you saw last night, the reason why they continue to be stalwarts of the democratic party. however, if i can go to the earn some respect to the obamas, who i do deeply love and respect. we didn't hear a lot about the economy and one thing that i was really looking forward to seeing from president obama was whether or not he would speak directly to younger black men. because we know that that's an issue for the vice president. so i thought, you know, if they're going to have obama, there's no way he is not going to touch on this issue because it is an issue that even the harris campaign has acknowledged. they have work to do and i didn't necessarily hear that. and i'm still trying to figure out will that come later this week or maybe they have some different tactics in place long term, where they'll attempt to utilize the former president to speak to that cohort of voters.
5:46 am
but it is something that i think is still an issue shou of the vice president and it's something that i would not necessarily overlook. >> what do you think about that i mean, look i think that what the obamas did last night was affective sir, michael and i were talking about this earlier today. >> i would argue that it was actually effective in trying to reach some of the people that he's talking about, in part because what they were doing it's undermining some of trump's strength with those, with those groups. so i don't think i would not agree that that those audiences were untouched by what the obamas did last night. i also think they aren't the nominee. they're not it is not their responsibility to lay out kind of the economic messaging for the campaign they were there to serve a role well that i think they served quite exceptionally, which is to continue to fire up not only democrats who are excited, but also deliver a message that resonates with independents, which i think that they did and kind of talking about the notion that we can get back to a place where politics isn't just about tearing each other
5:47 am
down so i think that actually they were they were kind of speaking to those groups, but i certainly agree with shermichael that there is work for harrison walls to do to get those numbers back up to the 90% of black voters who are voting for democrats. and in 2020, for example, you have one huge problem that has to be jumped over today, and that is how do you beat what happened last night okay. >> it's a nice problem. >> like i will take that problem if you give me a list of problems that we need that we're going to hear shermichael was like, oh, he's about to get he's going she's coming for her problem all day long i actually okay. so in some ways, i maybe disagree with that framing because i think the obamas are there in a class of their own, right in terms of there, their
5:48 am
rhetorical skills, in terms of how democrats feel about them. they are exalted, would argue as they should be, but i don't think the challenge tonight is for, you know, for tim walz to deliver a set of remarks that feels or rhetorically he sort of more powerful than what the obamas did. i think the challenge tonight is for tim walz to talk to the country about who he is about who camila harris is, and about what they're going to do in office. and i think we've seen tim walz be an incredible asset for this ticket since he joined. i mean, he's a terrific campaigner. we saw him even last night briefly in milwaukee. he brings an energy that i expect we're going to see on stage here tonight. and i'm excited to see what he does to both you and i guess kate first, because you are an alum of veteran of the biden administration was already staying in it when michelle obama said that she was feeling, so i'm sorry, but she said she felt something as you hadn't felton a long time and that was hope know, there was no i will say as i, you know, obviously, i don't speak for joe biden anymore but for me as
5:49 am
a biden alum and for those i've been talking to, no, there's no sitting in that she was acknowledging that we're in an incredibly exciting moment democrats are united, they're fired up, they're very excited about vice president harris to by the way, is an important partner to joe biden in the white house. so no, there's no staying in that you want to say something you know, she did say that. and mrs. obama does not parse her words. she's very clear. she's always distinct and what she wants to say and how she wants it to be interpreted. tonight, though, i just want to touch quickly i wonder if walls and a former president can sort of expand that we saw the white dues for harris, yes. >> he was chosen for that purpose. i would argue. can they have a concise message to potentially expand those voters in pennsylvania and michigan, maybe some of those white guys who are on the fence who are thinking, look, this economy isn't working for me some of the cultural changes on not really filling can they reach those folks is the, hey, this is a democratic party that still for you, we've had ten years, i would argue of sin him shift to republicans. can they pull some of them back in a

5:56 am
me right now is frankly miranda the ceo and president of the hispanic federation. luis miranda junior, two chairs the latino victory fund. he's also lin manuel miranda, father as a proud mother, i would i always love when i've known just as my kids mom, so i just wanted to thank you both for being here. frankly, thank you. thank you of course frankie the new yorker, is asking a key question this morning in a headline, i'll pose it to you can camila harris, his campaign, solve the latino turnout problem do you think she can according to the poll that the hispanic for the regime and latino v3 foundation has done just right after it was announced, the bp choice for kamala harris and waltz ticket we took a snapshot of the latino community across the country and we saw that enthusiasm and interest in the election, the presidential election, has skyrocketed. this is something that we were hearing on the street with
5:57 am
through our canvassers and our organization is right after the announcement. and we can confirm that now that more than 70% of latinos are committed to go out and vote and more than 52% are basically saying that they are more enthusiastic about what is happening right now is up to the campaign to really clarify many of the questions that they have. but the enthusiasm is there and the attention is there. >> and it's interesting to note that in only three weeks kamala harris was able to move the pendulum from 49%, a little under half, who were ready to vote for president biden to 59 percent. the magic number, the rule of thumb in latino politics. it's that you need two thirds of latinos to vote for a particular party when bush got 42% of the latino
5:58 am
vote, he became president when biden got 70% of the latino vote he became president searches very, very close to that magic to one match support amongst the tainos is key. >> there's no ifs, ands or buts about it. there's no question. that always gets me to something you wrote back in may that is just as worthy to read today as well. you wrote this for the washington post. those of us who have spent a lifetime working and latino politics find ourselves feeling a single question these days. how can latinos even consider voting for a candidate who suggests that immigrants are poisoning the blood of our country how do you answer that, luis? what aspects of donald trump's message do you do find are resonating so much, isn't it really about the economy? >> actually, i don't believe it's about the economy first of all, are women, latinas are
5:59 am
much smarter than awesome man they are all ready in the 60s supporting kamala harris for precedent, but are man, i believe cord in the aura of bravado that trump presents to the world and get confused that you don't govern by saying crazy things. you go brynn by putting in place policies to serve and help our communities. and i think that what frankie said before, it's true now, the enthusiasm, it's their latinos were saying in the poll that their reading and they're learning about well, the campaign every day, every week. and i think that though there still that gap, more latinas and latinos, that it's going to be closing in the next 11
6:00 am
weeks. >> i am bipartisan agreement, nonpartisan agreement. women far smarter than men. just saying, frankie, but mostly exact. this gets to key question latinos do vote on all issues and care about all issues. but we know that there is going to be amongst other issues are focus on immigration tonight. we know where donald trump stands on immigration. we have also seen republicans, democrats, especially in the last year in becoming more hawkish, more aggressive and more on offense when it comes to border security do you have a concern that there could be a view that while moving more towards i'm just going to use the broad strokes language more to the right on immigration and border security that could threaten support on the left well, while we filed on our survey, is that when we ask the question about who is going to provide a humane treatment
