the writing is on the wall and we can expect what's coming later tonight i think that's right. >> boris and brianna from my conversations with donald trump's team, they will not guarantee that this is going to happen but they have been working toward this for a very long time even before the republican national convention in july why there were talks taking place between donald trump's orbit and rfk junior's campaign. and part of that was really led by donald trump's eldest son, donald trump. junior. he was really the leader. i'm told behind a lot of that back-channeling, trying to see if they could find a way to get rfk junior to end his campaign. and endorsed the former president. do other big names who have been involved with that are also tucker carlson, someone who i'm told has a close relationship with rfk jr. but also this man named omeed mallak. he's a businessman. he was a former rfk junior donor. he's also donated to donald trump's campaign and his close
12:01 pm
to both donald trump junior and tucker carlson. but all that aside, look, the thinking within trump's world was there's a lot of questions for months over who's candace's would rfk junior hurt more, wouldn't hurt then president joe biden and donald trump's campaign more. and now, a question between bothered hurts trump. are harris i'm told that when biden ended his campaign and harris became really the sixth that's it was clear that she was going to talk to democratic ticket. that is when the majority of people on trump's team decided yes we want to seek that endorsement. again, this was a long time coming. now, part of this as well as keep in mind rfk junior. obviously, running had been running as an independent ending his campaign right now in this major speech. but he has been polling pretty well, nowhere near the way that both donald trump now harris are polling. but like we're in for example, in arizona, he's polling at 6% in many of these battlegrounds. he is sustaining a good number of voters who want want to, wanted to support
12:02 pm
him. and so the trump team's thinking here is that if they can siphon off enough of those voters away from harris and that somehow this endorse could hold on for just a moment. let's go to rfk junior in the battleground states, i would likely add the election over to the democrats with whom i disagree on the most existential issues censorship war and chronic disease. >> oh, i want everyone to know that i am not terminating my campaign i am simply suspending it not not ending it my name will remain on the ballot in most states if you live in a blue state you can vote for me without harming, are helping president trump or vice president harris? and read this age is a multiply i encourage
12:03 pm
you to vote for me and if enough, if you do vote for me and neither at the major party candidates win $270, which is quite possible. in fact, today, our polling shows them tying it to 69 to two to 269. and i could conceivably still end up in the white house in a contingent election in about ten battleground states, where my presence would be a spoiler. i'm going to remove my name and i've already started that process and urge voters to vote for me it's a sense of victory and not defeat. that item suspending my campaign activities not only what did we do the impossible by collecting 1 million signatures we changed the national political conversation forever ranoque disease, free speech, government corruption, breaking our addiction to war i have

moved to the center of. politics i can say to all of work so hard the last year-and-a-half acu for a job well done the wreak a great causes drove me as it is raised in the first place primarily these the principal causes that persuaded me to leave the democratic democratic party and run as an independent and now to throw my support president trump the clauses were free free-speech war in ukraine and the war on our children. i've already described is my personal experience isn't chicago's was it government censorship, industrial complex? i want to say a word about the ukraine war the military industrial calm. plex has provided us with familiar comic book justification like i do want happen entering this from
12:05 pm
rfk junior is a noble effort that so i didn't have put into aiding ukraine and then to thwart his hitler-like march across europe. in fact, tiny ukraine is a proxy in a geopolitical struggle daughter and i just well as johanne, a mask because she's the host of the press advanced podcast. >> she's a former obama white house director of press advance. >> he's talking about wanting he's he we've seen a press filing or a court filing and pennsylvania so we've seen that he's taken himself off of these ballot access challenges in states where he would be a spoiler, right? >> these battleground states like look, tell me if i've got this right, doug. but when it comes to a red state or a blue state, you can sort of, if you want to vote for him, you can then register how you feel about him and then in the crazy possible chance of a 269 to 69 tie between trump and harris then maybe he can just ride that all the way to the white

house. >> yeah. i was watching that donald trump last week stood and said in front of a bunch of groceries and said, i haven't seen any cheerios in a long time. i had cheerios for breakfast this was cuckoo for cocoa puffs and trying to get any logic out of that is good luck with that because it that's the one you can understand what he says to if you can, you can understand what he says and reminded of a line of melbourne is blazing saddles when somebody gets up and gives a indecipherable speech, he says, who can argue with that? that's authentic frontier gibberish, and that's exactly what that is. >> yeah. >> well, i was going to say to your point though, brianna, the big overarching issue here for both campaigns for the harris campaign, trump campaign is the third parties x factor. and what that means for turnout in november. so even if what he was saying wasn't easy to follow, it is still the concern of either campaign, which is partially why trump was looking for that endorsement, that these voters are sort of the x factor in what they decide to
12:07 pm
do with rfk jr. going into november when it's going to be such a tight race and weeks seen that before, back in 2016 and yet his supporters may be confused because we're even confused based on his own statements. >> now we've gotten a fresh statement from his campaign clarifying previous remarks in which initially in his courtroom what's happening, then he in his remarks so that he was throwing his support behind trump over the war in ukraine. what he described as the war on our children and chronic disease was another one it's hard to make sense of. joanna masca what do you see in all of this as this rambling speech goes on and he launches attacks against democrats well, look, he's reminding us who he is. i mean, he's a troubled son of a famous politician who has had drug problems, problems with women, nefarious business
12:08 pm
dealings with venezuela. i mean, there were a lot of questions about his intentions in this campaign from the get-go he, is, not ready for primetime and certainly not ready for the presidency. i mean, he's never held elected office. but he got some momentum because a lot of americans didn't want trump and they didn't want biden. and i think we have to be careful as democrats not to demonize the views of his supporters. there a lot of people we're skeptical of modern medicine right now, we don't need to demonize them. we need to seek to understand. we need to go after those followers. >> i don't know if there's people in pennsylvania who are following exactly what he's saying. >> but i think he's reminded us who he is. now. it's time for the democrats to really like go after his supporters who have questions about trump too joanna, seek to understand people who believe that kids should not get childhood

vaccines that keep them safe. i mean, i understand there's a lot of debate and you can see what it of you will of the covid vaccine. but what he's talked about and the folks who gravitated towards him, they have a particular set of views on something broader than that well, and you're right, you know the truth is, i'm from the respect empower include original obama team and people are going to have some different views, ones that are very hard to follow for other people who have more information but that is not a reason that we should demonize them and say that they're idiots, or that they're ignorant, or that they're part of the problem we need to ek to understand what their perspective is based on a lot of misinformation. >> some of it coming from rfk junior and try to give the right information so that they can make up they are mind okay. >> we just need to be clear here. and joanna, if you can stay with us now, you have trump encouraging her story.
12:10 pm
rfk junior encouraging his supporters to now support trump. while also encouraging them in blue states, red states to just vote for whoever they want to cohesive and saying that he's not actually surely ending his campaign. he simply suspending it and saying to a single woo hoo in the room that he has a path toward the white house doug, i should point out, we're watching live images of donald trump in las vegas. he's got an event there before he gets to arizona later, doug when donald trump, as we've seen in recent days, make statements saying that his heart's in the right place, that they believe some of the same things he's aligning himself with someone who has said some really weird stuff and democrats are now attacking trump and j.d. vance, calling them weird. how much does the label now sink in with voters given that he's seemingly aligned with rfk junior, trump likes to run three-ring circus and he feels that he's the
12:11 pm
ringmaster in knows what he's doing. this is moved from bizarre to carnival with rfk jr. the summer of rfk junior was started with the brain worm, ended with the bear claw right and so i think voters are going to make most voters overwhelmingly are going to just see that for what it is and shore maybe they do believe some of the same things. maybe they both believe in gravity. maybe they believe the earth revolves around the sun. some of those things but ultimately, he's the most marginal candidate that we've seen in a long time. but the reality is all of these races that we've, all these states, we're talking about could be won or lost on the margins. so you still have to take it seriously. >> yeah. and to your point and also to joanna's where she's talking about sort of this trying to appeal very generously two people who are quite different from i think what you're you heard over the course of the dnc the last four nights democrats do worry it's interesting. you listen doug publicly, they're going to say that don't worry. that's sort of the reform crane but when you get them to talk privately, they do worry because the
12:12 pm
margins may be so slim it can come down to just a few votes here or there. they do worry that this could make a difference even if they think that it shouldn't. >> one of the smartest democratic operatives is a young lady named liz smith, and she is an assassin. when she goes after you, you get mortally wounded and she spent the past several months focused on one person and that was rfk junior, and every day she was out there putting information on now why he was unacceptable and so forth. she she has done her job. he's now out of it, and that's where mostly he could hurt biden, but also let's be clear, none of us are smart enough to know of the rfk voter, even if they're 3% here, 2% there, how they break down? do they all show up? and in what direction they go we know this is going to be a close election and a lot of things can be won or lost on margins no one is smart enough to know where the rfk junior vote goes. >> and i think the question for the harris campaign is trying to decipher which of those voters were going to trump because they were disillusioned by biden if they have now a
12:13 pm
harris option, which is when they only had a four weeks ago, will they gravitate toward harris if they are disillusioned? by trump. and i think that's the big question the harris campaign hasn't answered yet. polling hasn't quite answered yet because it's still early on in the harris campaign phase of this. but that is certainly something that the battleground state director for the campaign has already said. they welcome those and they need to sort of decipher who of those was only going rfk because they didn't want trump or biden a lot of dynamics at play, not the least of which is this speech from rfk junior. that is all over the place. we're going to keep an eye on it panel, please stand by. we're going to take a quick break and we'll be right back. >> cnn news central brought to you by endless wings and baby back ribs that golden corral he only won for everyone so why don't you act like a good

the edge. premiers sunday, september 22, hi, on cnn following breaking news coming into cnn this afternoon, we're still monitoring the rfk junior's speech and his throwing his support behind the former president donald trump. >> but trump has just arrived at a venue in las vegas, nevada where he is holding an event this afternoon and he is expected i did to speak shortly. you see these live images of the podium set up their let's actually take you there with cnn's alayna treene, who is standing by. alayna, what are you hearing about what trump is going to say especially given the news that rfk junior's now endorsing him yeah. >> sorry about that is loud on your nike. i think i'm losing a little bit audio. >> pull it out if you can hear me, but look, he is about to take the podium here. >> so you know, very small restaurant, unlike it's not a big rally, there's not a lot of supporters. they are some supporters here. >> but look, i think you're going to hear him address rfk june here and that endorsement
12:19 pm
of him in these remarks, we know that this had been a longtime coming, that many people within donald trump's orbit, including his own son donald trump junior had been working on this behind the scenes and then later today, we know you're going to see donald trump back in arizona holding a rally just a couple of minutes outside of phoenix and they have touted having a special guests there. >> i think you can anticipate that you will see rfk junior, there later with they're now donald trump is going on here shortly to talk about his policy pitch on tax, no taxes on tips something very important to workers here in nevada. there's a reason that he announced that pitch first in las vegas back in june, and then his back here today to talk about that one thing as well that you'll hear him do is criticized kamala harris for what he says is stealing that proposal. of course, she announced that she also supports this idea of oh, taxes on tips and august as well. so
12:20 pm
you'll hear a lot of that today. i also think you can expect a little bit of a reaction to harris's speech last night. for us, brianna, it will be the first time that we will hear donald trump speak publicly in a venue like this since the dnc wrapped up and we heard harris's speech last night. >> alayna, thank you so much. for that reporting. let's bring our panel back in because something that we just heard from rfk junior, doug, is that former president trump. this is from rfk. asked him to enlist him in his administration apparently, there were two meetings between trump and rfk junior, and he suggested this is rfk talking about trump. he suggested said that we joined forces as a unity party. there's reporting out there that indicates that rfk junior also approached the harris campaign and talked about a potential cabinet position. there. perhaps not surprising that someone who is considering dropping out of the race would seek a future employment, perhaps before throwing an endorsement behind someone in
12:21 pm
campaigns, we call that endorsement shopping and you're going to go to the one who offers you the best deal. if either one of them does, but i'd gives some it's certainly begs the question of where would he fit in either administration. you're not going to put an anti-vax leader at cdc or the fda or hhs or something like that. where would he fit in either administration? not clear, but i want to give some political advice to the trump campaign right now, if you look at the backdrop of where alayna is, we hear these struggles of keeping trump on message. this is an event designed to keep donald trump very much on message on what he wants to be talking about it's in las vegas, talking about no tip's the hotel and restaurant employees union is no axes on no, excuse me, no taxes on tips it'd be different the other way would be a boom. the hotel and restaurant employees union is a massive union, not just there, but throughout the country. you see the signage that they have ones in spanish. we don't talk enough in this campaign about hispanic voters and the opportunities that republicans have for outreach there, especially if they spend money
12:22 pm
on those resources. this is designed to keep donald trump in on message. and along from way, way far out in left field comes rfk junior. and if you're that the leadership and the trump campaign right now, you really sweating it because you have a perfect venue to do a perfect event. and rfk jr. could really spoil it because trump likes to go on tangent yeah. >> you know, from the harris campaign perspective is doug said it's sort of interesting. how would you fit him into an administration i don't see how you really would in that perspective. so perhaps not surprising that he went with the better deal for himself, which would be trump while and i've been reaching out to campaign sources to learn more about this approach that says that he did to the campaign see if he had a position in a future administration, should the vice president, when i will note though, it's worth remembering that when it was president biden as the democratic candidate, he actually coalesced the kennedy family together for a formal endorsement. and earlier this
12:23 pm
year, because even at that point, the campaign was well aware that this third party run could influence the outcome of the election. and so they, knowing this legacy name, brought together this family to formally endorsed president joe biden at the time, and essentially another sort of implied this near universal rejection of one of their own relatives that was running for president. i just shows you how the campaign has been watching this unfold and how early on they were already getting other members of the kennedy family to stand behind the candidate at the time. >> and the kennedy family, i should just put out a statement, but before i get to that, i just want to point out former president donald trump has taken to the podium there. it appears that he is set to speak at any moment. but the music in the room is still on. we will see how that gets sorted out to the family statement being issued by the kennedys, kerry kennedy just put it out on x formerly twitter saying that essentially
12:24 pm
their brother bobby's decision to endorse trump today is a betrayal of the values that our father and our family hold most dear. it is a sad ending to a sad story, and it is signed by five members of the kennedy family, who, as you noted, priscilla had joined president biden a few months ago and putting out a an endorsement of biden as president and essentially stepping away from rfk jr. here comes donald trump now, and las vegas, let's go ahead and listen to the former president. >> is that nice place and i'm just talking to avia. you get thousands of people outside on the street. they want to get into your restaurant. i'll avi, we're going to have to expand it yeah. >> right. >> and thank you very much. i want to thank everybody for being here would you set a very nice endorsement from rfk junior i'll be talking about

investigations into the assassination attempt of donald trump and the security failures that led to that. >> this is really just a first step though, and it's it is the first step towards potential accountability for those security failures, but we still have more questions and answers really about one, what led to those lapses and to who is ultimately responsible. we don't have the names beyond just the handful of titles. and these are not very senior officials as well, but at the same time, new information continues to come out. our new reporting today is really focused on the communication failures that's been something that members of congress in particular have been raising questions about the last month. and we're learning today from the butler county district the attorney, that there were actually radio set aside by local officers with the intent to directly communicate with secret service on the day of the rally. but those those radios were never picked up by secret service. and ultimately at the rally three minutes before the shooting, a local officer radioed a warning that there was a man on that roof. that warning was not heard by secret service because they didn't have those radios in
12:39 pm
hand. ultimately, acting secret service director, ronald rowe has said they only needed about 15 seconds of a heads-up to do something about the shooter ultimately they didn't hear a warning and they didn't have any heads-up. and so what happened happened they were only able to neutralize him after he fired eight rounds. the former president and killed or rallygoer. but this really underscores a broader communication. the problem that is really at the center of both the internal review and the congressional investigations. and you can see the frustration as you go through this body camera footage that we've obtained hours and hours of body camera footage. the frustration on the part of local officers on the ground immediately after the show putin take a take a look at this particular moment just minutes after the shooter was neutralized do we call it out both on top of the roof. in the same frequency he's talking about calling out, saying, look, there's someone on the roof, there's someone on the roof. on the roof not getting any response from other officers or secret service agents in the area, ultimately leading to the shooting. and
12:40 pm
this really does again, underscore the broader communication problem that is at the center of all of these investigations. and look, those are not going to stop anytime soon. house republicans in particular are really adamant that accountability needs to happen and today's reassignments were not good enough for house speaker mike johnson. he issued a pretty scathing statement after the news broke earlier today yeah, some were you not on the same frequency and we know the answer, right. >> weren't even on the same radio system, zach, thank you for that. appreciate it still to come. why a second? former memphis police officers? changing his not guilty plea in the beating and death of tyre nichols after a traffic stop last year there for those first days and first steps, the new beginnings. >> and here we go again where these moments are made. there is where you'll find because it's never been about what we're here to help protect you

second former memphis police officer charged in the brutal beating and death of tyre nichols is expected to change his federal plea to guilty. >> a hearing is currently underway for emmitt martin, who earlier had pleaded not guilty in nichols's 2023 killing after a traffic stop andnd another former officer, desmond mills, also changed his federal and state, please, to guilty last november 5 officers in total were charged in nichols death investigation. we have seen a nick cnn's nick valencia here with more on this nick, what's going on here? >> this is the stunning twist, boris and brianna. we're not exactly clear on what led to this abrupt about-face from emmitt martin. the third we have been repeatedly calling his attorney, who's not called this back, but we do know that martin was facing a slew of charges in his federal case, including witness tampering, obstruction of justice, and deprivation of rights. he was one of the five officers involved in that violent beating death of tyre nichols, the 29-year-old who died three
12:46 pm
days later as a result of his injuries and those police officers that you're looking there on the screen initially had said that they pulled nichols over because of reckless driving. but in the 17 months since this incident happened, that's not entirely clear. what is clear though is what happened on that police body camera in it, you see emmitt martin pointedly punch and kick tyre nichols. nichols went on to die three days later. now, what is not clear still here is how this expected guilty plea that martin is expected to enter is going to affect whether or not it'll affect his state charges where he is facing second-degree murder charges, that state case is currently for all oh, intents and purposes at a standstill while the federal case is adjudicated, and that federal case, jury selection is expected to begin on september 9. so now, just as we're giving this report, emmitt martin, presumably in court in federal court where there are no cameras expected to enter that not guilty plea. boris, brianna next, alencia. thank you so much for that update the search

sal mercogliano. he is a maritime historian at campbell university cell. there's been a lot of speculation about what might have have happened here. people looking at the design of this super yacht what are the possibilities for what is possibly a waterspout that hit this super yacht? what are the possibilities for what could have happened here? >> yeah, i think if a waterspout is the case and we know that there was a high storm that came in. this ship in particularly has a huge mass on a 236 feet in height. and even though it didn't have sales set that is enough surface area to catch the wind and put this ship on its beamed. in other words, knock it over. and if the crew had but not properly secured hatches and doorways, the ship could have flooded very quickly, and that could lead to its sinking into the 50 meter or water well. >> the ceo of the firm that owns the yacht's manufacturer said that a series of avoidable mistakes led to this. he says the crew should have closed the
12:53 pm
hatches, close the hole, and gathered everyone together in one spot. from your view, is it clear that that didn't happen well, we're going to know more evidence as the divers continue whether or not the stern and the port app side hatch had been properly secured is standard procedure to shut those hatches during evenings we'll also find out if the kiel had been lowered. >> however, this was hit by almost like a tornado. and as you well know tornadoes can go through communities and hit one house and not a hit another so while the crew may have expected maybe bad weather, a thunderstorm, it's really hard to prepare for a csp out. basically, a what are tornado coming at your vessel and talk a little bit more about that keel because i've read about how the design of this particular super yacht had to retractable kiel, which is very heavy, meaning that if it were underway out on the ocean, you would actually have that killed dropped. it would give it a lot of stability. but if it's closer into shore as it
12:54 pm
might've been here that kiel could have been up, although it seemed like it was in pretty still pretty deep water, why would that kiel have been up? >> you had almost always have the keila the only time he really lower the kiel on a vessel this size of a sailing vessel is when you're under sale, that keel is meant so that when the vessel heals over in wind with sale set you would maintain the proper stability of the vessel. normally, you keep it up because it creates less drag. this is an extremely stable vessel without it, but that microburst that see tornado hitting it would send the ship onto its being men's, and it's not exactly clear that even if the kiel was down, it would have prevented this vessel going on its side has a very low free board, a distance from the water to the ship, and sinking on its side or getting on its side like that, water is going to come in through doors for ways in hatches that are not designed to be watertight so what other questions do you have that you would like to see answered through this through this investigation? well we
12:55 pm
know the ship's master is being questioned right now by authorities very competent master. there's a big question whether or not there was a deck watch set. in other words, was part of the crew awake? did they know the storm was coming in? you know, were there procedures in place so that if a storm is coming in, they could wake up, the crew, get the personnel up, get them on deck, and in life jackets. but again, this is a very odd issue to happen because it's a very low circumstance of this occurring. but a vessel this size, owners want to have a different yacht. and in this case, and sail yachts, what we tend to see is they want to go for those bigger mass, bigger vessels. and it makes them much more susceptible to win wind damage and forces like we saw with this tornado yeah. >> it was a beautiful ship. indeed, there was another ship that actually saw. we've seen reports of a waterspout coming in. they actually took some time, they said to move that shift a little bit to move away from the bayesian so all kinds of questions, as you said about whether they had a watch there on the deck. sal we know that
