tell you about it forced an emergency landing for united airlines flight seven people on board were injured. the latest incident to affect airline passengers. we're following these major developing stories and many more all coming in right here. the cnn news central since vice president kamal harris rose to the top of the democratic tickettover a mo >> she has not done a major sit down interview, but that changes today when she and her running mate, governor tim walz, sit down to answer questions from cnn's dana bash, the exclusive interview is set to air tonight at nine eastern, and it's a crucial we'll test for them. it is their chance to dig into key issues and policies to show voters where they stand. today's interview is happening, is harris and walz wrap up their two day swing through battleground, georgia, where they're trying to broaden their support and typically republican leaning areas after
11:03 am
a taping the interview, harris will speak at a rally this evening and savannah, while walz heads to north carolina, cnn's eva mckend is with us now, following all of this, just how much is riding on this interview, eva, you know, brianna from her time in the courtroom as a prosecutor, from her time in the committee room as the united states senator during these contentious hearings. she has a reputation for strenuously preparing for big moments and this is a big moment for the vice president. she will be tasked with explaining some of her evolution on some of these key policy issues and illustrate that she can thrive in some of these unscripted moments. this is also a test for her entire team because the strategy that her team it has employed over the last several weeks is keeping her away from doing these big interviews where she is going to face really difficult questions and that strategy seems to have worked so far, right? because the campaign has so much momentum.
11:04 am
but now tonight will be a big test. if that was actually the best thing to do. >> and there's new polling it shows a very tight race in georgia. she's doing better than biden was doing for sure, but she's pretty close with trump in this break down the numbers for us. yeah. just two points ahead in this fox news poll that is within the margin of error. but what it does show is that she is doing better with some of these key democratic coalitions are needed to pull off a victory. certainly better than president biden and that is why they are in georgia today. and that is why they are going all in on this state and even competing in places where republicans have historically been more successful. i saw a little bit this during the midterms senator warnock, all jokes that his family is from waycross. waycross, georgia so the democrats in the. >> state of long pushed back against this idea of abandoning rural pockets of the state. and
11:05 am
that is ever more clear in this contest where they think that they can drive up the numbers in savannah and places outside of savannah. and the surrounding counties. and that is what they're doing it's the strategy. >> yeah, we'll have to see how it pays off eva. thank you so much. we appreciate it. boris, former president donald trump is also on the campaign trail hitting a couple of key swing states today. >> and the next hour he's expected to speak about the economy at a stop in michigan and then later he holds a town hall in wisconsin cnn's steve contorno is live for us on the trail in potterville, michigan steve trump spent the night attacking his rival on social media, also re-posting some offensive content. we should note, what is his message this afternoon in michigan? >> well, the backdrop for today's event could not make it any more clear what his campaign with like him to talk about. he is speaking at a steel distribution facility right behind me in the heart of
11:06 am
michigan. this is an economic focus speech he is intending to deliver today, one that is, they are hoping seeing resonates with the people of michigan. this is a state where the unemployment rate, though historically relatively low, is one of the higher. i don't play me unemployment rates in the country and obviously it's also a state where the manufacturing industry and the auto industry are very important. and trump has made focusing on the biden administration's ev policies a major focal points when he is whenever he is, he is in the state of michigan. but as you said, boris, he has also been on the attack on social media and also through his running mate j.d. vance, who had this to say about the harris campaign yesterday? >> the president called me and he said, you know, the crazy thing is jd that kamala harris, she's pretending that she agrees with us on everything and if you look at her campaign the past week and a half, she pretends that she agrees with donald j. trump on every issue she is running a copycat
11:07 am
campaign and i said, mr. president, i think i figured out what's going on. she wants my job. >> she's realizing that they don't have any chance. >> she's going to ditch tim walz and she wants to run alongside donald let's trump michigan is one of those states where it's getting especially close in the polls. it's a battleground that the trump campaign felt very confident about. several weeks ago. and look, they still believe that they will win here, but certainly the urgency has intended it's a fight, and that's why you are seeing him out in these blue wall states over the next couple of days, he's in michigan today. he'll be in wisconsin this evening and to pennsylvania tomorrow. boris all right. steve contorno. thank you for that report. let's talk more about what's happening with former trump white house communications director mike dubke. he's a founding partner of the blackrock group, also with us is former democratic congressman patrick murphy of
11:08 am
pennsylvania. he was also an undersecretary for the us army wonder mike, what you think because we see these polls in these key battleground states, they're very tight there within the margin of error i think kamala harris still very much has her work cut out for her and that's what republicans think. but then you have trump. he's speaking on the economy this afternoon, an issue that is supposed to be such an the advantage for him and yet in the last 24 hours, he's on truth social, he's posting all this stuff, including stuff with sexual content that's just kind of gross and creepy. and it reminded me yesterday of frank luntz saying you know, he's got to be careful about what he does because you don't lose if you're giving it away and that seemed to be what he feels trump is doing. what do you think about all this behavior look, i agree with frank on this, that if the campaign can stick with talking about the biden-harris agenda and make sure that the american pis in h
11:09 am
the president's words, there's always the last that's person in the room and can tie her campaign to the inflation that we've that we've incurred the immigration debacle that we have in the southern border and these international crises. >> i think the president, former president trump, is in a much better spot i unfortunately, these distractions keep coming up and some of them are of his own making, some of them are not there blown out of proportion, but that is really taking away from a position that i at least think can make him much more competitive in the race. but it's totally competitive. were neck and neck year congressman murphy to mike's point, a lot of these polls are within the margin of error. but yet when voters are asked who would be better on the economy, donald trump has nearly a double-digit lead. i believe it's an 89 points. what is harris have to do with her messaging on the economy? in order to catch up
11:10 am
why it's been historic, be the case. >> but i think what you have, kamala harris and tim walz, people understand that our economies finally moving in the right direction that we have unemployment at a record low that we have a stock market at a record high, and the majority of americans have their pensions are tied to the stock market. so it's about jobs, jobs, jobs, and i think that's what honestly vice president kamala harris and tim walz are bringing to the table. they're talking about kitchen table issues while the other side, he's talking about distractions and, violating the law and regulations what we saw this weekend on arlington national cemetery, which was roiled, disgrace yeah. >> and we don't want to get to that with you, certainly here in a moment, but i want to ask you when you look at the polls and you see them neck and neck. but you know that when people are asked congressman about the issues and they actually say that trump does better on the economy and immigration. and these are the top issues what, how do you account for the fact that she does better in the
11:11 am
polls overall four, compared to how she does on those issues. what is the gap in there that you see she makes up for what is the quality that she's making, making up there? >> i think she's made via the polls because she is a genuine, authentic leaders. she knows herself. yes. the other side, donald trump talks about how he's in business. of course, he doesn't talk about the six bankruptcies that he had and that he didn't pay contractors and other folks when he did that i would say that's why this election. it's not just about the economy that's the number one issue, but it's also about national security. and that's why kamala harris and tim walz are drawn there. it's about freedom, freedom to choose, freedom to assemble on the workplace and that's what this election is going to be. and it's a real contrast. i'll tell you, brianna, i'm hearing in the battleground seat of power pennsylvania, 19 electoral votes here there's definitely momentum that i see
11:12 am
in bucks county where i live and across the commonwealth and elsewhere in those battleground states. and i think i'd rather much be the kamala harris, tim walz team done the other side, but it is within the margin error. they are the underdogs but i like my team a lot better mike, you mentioned a moment ago unforced errors, distractions, or issues that are blown out of proportion. >> i'm wondering what you think of the army's rebuke of the trump campaign's handling of the incident in arlington national cemetery. what category in your eyes does that fallen? >> well, i think for two events on on that monday, one with laying the wreath, which is totally appropriate, the other which is what we're talking about today with the propriety of taking photographs at the graves and then they use of that on tiktok and look, i that is one where i think the campaign shouldn't have put that out there. they should have blurred the names of the other fallen soldiers who were in whose graves were there in
11:13 am
order to protect those families. so i think that's an unforced error. i also think that this is something in the media that's been a little bit blown up, but if we get back to these polling numbers first democrats have finally come home. i think that's why we see to answer your question, i think democrats who had walked away from biden have come back. that's why we see this so close. but on economic issues and all these other issues on immigration and the such this is where the campaign, the trump campaign can really take a stride. she's had 39 great days. i don't think anyone would say they've had nothing but a great start to their campaign. she has an interview tonight, the vice president does with her vice presidential nominee. and then there's a debate on the tenth. now can we start to get into the real campaign? and i will be curious to come back in two weeks and talk about poll numbers and see if there's still neck and neck. >> patrick, you're the former undersecretary of the army, as we mentioned, do you think this is the media blowing this up or
11:14 am
do you think this is a big deal? >> it's a huge deal. it's an absolute disgrace, a travesty. >> the former president donald trump knows better when you go to arlington national cemetery, there's rules, laws, regulations in place. >> he and his team were instructed that you cannot go to section 60. were the grave sites are in film? what campaign commercial? they were instructed that they brushed aside, pushed aside a woman, an army civilian, saying, get out of my way, and then taking those photos with a thumbs-up at a grave site? >> brianna boris, i served direct had lost. >> thank tim-mentum. i i'd never made it home. some of them are buried. and r-international cemetery president trump this honors time and time again. my brother's sister, veterans. he knows better please. so callous. and the independence and other folks that will decide this race in battleground states like my home state of pennsylvania i
11:15 am
asked when he dishonors our veterans time and time again, calls them losers and suckers. says the metal freedoms better than medal of honor fires to four-star store marine generals and talks bad about them. and general mattis and general kelly. general kelly lost his son in combat the american people, if you're republican or independent, they actually self do you support our veterans? yes or no is election day more important than judgment day? because your eyes of the world and up above or watching how we act and who we support and the selection congressman, i also wanted to ask you, given that we're hosting this interview tonight with someone that you had a personal relationship with. >> harris, his vice presidential nominee, tim walz it's almost certain we don't know for sure, but it's almost certain that dana is going to ask him about his past comments about his military rank. and
11:16 am
him talking about holding a weapon in a combat zone, which he didn't do, seeming to embellish his experience. i'm wondering how you think he should respond to questions on those issues. >> he should be forthright. upcoming and honestly, he's always been bars tim walz, the other side once attack his record for 24 years. he served honorably when president trump, when he was a student got five deferments and etheridge's. do you got five deferments from the vietnam war. but these are the facts and of course, he should be asked about it. he served as a command sergeant major. he didn't serve in time a grade, so we didn't retire that rank. he carried weapons of war. he left his wife, his kids after 9-11 to deployed with his unit overseas army put them in, intends to italy home with 173rd airborne regiment didn't set them to afghanistan. he never said he served in afghanistan. he made a mis-statement wants when he said, i carried weapons of war, which he did in war, which he
11:17 am
didn't do. he was in the war on terror, but it was in combat in iraq or afghanistan. but it wasn't a belocian. his record it was in mis-statement talking about how these weapons of war should be in our schools, shouldn't be hurting our children like to have them so i have full faith and confidence that tim walz, who is a leader of character and kamala harris will do great with debate tonight, dana is a phenomenal interviewer we'll see how it goes on. >> nobody watch it with my kids and i'm going to show my son and my daughter. i hope this person, these two people get the lead our country to the next four years because we need a new generation of leaders that write these wrongs. >> mike, what are you looking for in this interview? >> well, i'm looking for a one-on-one interview. i hope that if when she's sitting down with these two individuals that she really does focus on, vice president harris and taught an asked her about the position she took in 2019 when running for president, vote, she took

when she was in the united states senate and how those far left positions, progressive positions themselves, but far-left as she was running, why she's changed her mind on fracking, on medicare for all and all those other items. find out i know we there's this whole nomenclature about borders are but that was, that was the language that was used at the time. we have an immigration problem, we need to discuss that. so hopefully, i'm hoping that it turns into a conversation where dana is asking the vice president why she made some of these floods ups and flops, her purview just to be clear, was looking at the drivers of immigration we can ignore that really want to argue about this because i hear what you're saying my at the time the time layers reported and i'm gonna be clear at the time it was recorded, even cnn kaltura borders are so we're, we're really, we can argue about that. i find that no, we
11:19 am
didn't. i think we can go back. >> we'll we'll go back and double-check. >> and if i'm wrong, i will i will i will eat my words on that but let's go back and double-check. well, do i love i know. i loved that mike dubke, former congressman, and i'm not sure murphy, governor mike, but the record is this is that the record is this is that her record with joe biden has been the highest oil production and natural gas production in american history that gas prices were over $6 in some states, they're now down. >> i got gas and at the american legion conference in louisiana for 294 last night, right. so this is the reality. >> the reality is is that our economies finally moving in the right direction after president trump racked up $8 trillion in debt, we lost jobs, good double-digit unemployment now, partially because of covid, but we brought those jobs over 15 million jobs back. we have new job creation in america. we need to continue the march on putting our economy back on the right track. we can and we will

tanking fell another 4% yesterday, dip below $20 for the first time since the company went public in march, it's actually down 70% since this spring. and that selloff has been accelerating of late hey and this has of course shrank the value of trump's stake in his company. it was worth about $6 billion in may. now, 2 billion $2,000,000,000.0 1. last point here, boris, in theory, trump could monetize this stake in the company by borrowing against his shares. but to do that, he would have to find a bank thank or a wealthy individual or some other entity to lend to him. and that would not be easy either boris matt egan. >> thanks so much for breaking that down for us, brianna, the white house is vowing to aggressively defend the president biden's student loan relief plan, which remains on hold after the supreme court declined to lift a sweeping block, the high court signaling think that it wants the process to play out in the lower courts first, for millions of people in debt, the plan could slash

to impact them. because for the folks who they are impacted by this, they are hanging on every little piece of news it's about this. >> oh, this is a huge deal. they're stuck in limbo. so there is some good news for most of these borrowers. the department of education has put basically a pause on their payments. they don't have to worry about paying right now while this plays out in the courts and interests won't accrue, but there's a couple other constant questions does that i think borrowers need to know about, first of all, this could delay some student loan forgiveness for some borrowers that are pursuing that this could delay this by months second of all, you can't actually switch into a different loan plan right now. and so some experts are really worried about new grads. they just graduated and they might not be able to get into a plan that it helps lower their payments before their first bill is due. this fall that is very important to know. >> i'm katie, you've been doing great reporting on this. thank you so much for the very latest. we do appreciate it. katie lobosco. and still ahead, a critical swing state governor going to bat for donald trump despite their troubled past,

11:43 am
sake of beating the democratic ticket trump has repeatedly attacked kemp for refusing to support the former president's push to overturn the 2020 election results in the peach state here's trump in atlanta earlier this month he's a bad guy. he's a disloyal guy, and he's a very average governor. later, brian, little brian kemp despite that kemp is still endorsing the former president well, there was a little distraction obviously on on their side when it came to georgia, but to me that's in the past. >> i've been saying that guy's literally for over a year now that i was going to support our nominee, that we had to win georgia the road in the water white house runs through georgia. and i still believe today we cannot afford four more years of kamala harris we want to discuss with bobby sapper rowe. >> he's governor kemp's former campaign manager, bobby. thank you so much for being with us. i first want to start with a new fox news poll that
11:44 am
has kamala harris, leading donor donald trump in your state by two points, though that's within the margin of error. what do you think will ultimately determine where georgia lands on election night? >> yeah, i think it's important to notice someone who works on campaigns that i've you polls more as trends, less than fact so obviously it's trending that kamala harris has made this a serious race. and georgia's a very tough state for either for both donald trump or kamala harris to win. but i think the main and point that donald trump should focus on is the economy and getting kamala harris to actually articulate what her agenda in policy positions are. i think georgians and governor kemp's on a fantastic job of talking about the economy. he got us through covid. there's a lot of great policy points that he hit on during his term 2022 race with donald trump needs to focus on. and i think the message he needs to try and hit voters with is, are you better
11:45 am
off today? are you better off four years ago? and i think if he can do that, he'll get right back on track and i think he'll be in a good position to win but to your point about the poll, two points at kamala's up, two points we're playing a little bit of catch-up, but i still think george's trump's to lose so after governor kemp's endorsement, the former president seem to make amends. >> he put out this message on social media. >> do you think partly it's a sign that trump was concerned this feud? >> could cost him votes. i mean, we didn't see republicans stay home for a number of senate races that were crucial to control of that chamber of congress yeah. >> i can't speak on why president trump did it, but i think there's a new approval number out for governor kemp today that had him at 64% i think everyone in the state knows governor kemp's the most popular elected official here by a pretty good margin. and i also think it's important and
11:46 am
i listened to the clip of governor kemp before he said for over a year, he would support the republican nominee. he's continued to do that and kept his promise. but one of the things i think is also important as governor kemp in his political operation, have created a great ground game that we created back in 2022 that i think will be very important for the trump campaign, but also top to bottom candidates across the board. for that turnout. operation to come into full effect and have a huge impact on donald trump winning the state of georgia it is also interesting to me, bobby, that in the statements that i've seen from cam, he's maintained that trump lost georgia in 2020 though the former president doesn't seem to have accepted his defeat. >> there you'll look, the election was certified. governor kemp has held that that stance, but i think what's important with everything going on right now is there's a lot of questions it's about what are the 2020 election will have similar effects in 2024 but one point
11:47 am
that i think a lot of people are, have not mentioned. that's very important to this election and i hope voters here, this is back in 2021. governor kemp, the election integrity act sp2022, which made it easier to vote to heart and harder to cheat which created more transparency. there is higher turnout for both republicans and democrats. there is west, less wait times to vote, which is a big gripe that democrats have had since 2018 that i think will bring confidence to 2024 election that president trump should feel confident that the outcome of this race will be, will be safe can secure. >> you alluded to making it harder to cheat. but again, there was no evidence of widespread fraud in georgia, right right? >> and just to be clear, obviously, there's, you know, it's not just donald trump and the maga lane who said this has also been stacey abrams and the democrats who have been harping similar messages. i think the point of it is the governor kemp believes the election was
11:48 am
legitimate obviously, an elections, not everything is perfect, but i think the election integrity act helped voters, and i hope georgia voters are hearing this it created a great opportunity to prove that elections are safe and secure. but also the university of georgia conducted a poll on the 2022 election 99 percent said there was no issues. 97% had under five-minute wait times and over 90% said they felt it was safe and secure. so i think it's a positive momentum for the 2024 election just to show that voters should feel confident that this election will be secure and safe, and that there shouldn't be any issues with will there being any quote-unquote cheating bobby's ever we have to leave the conversation there. >> thanks for coming on thanks so much of course. still to come a warning today from the cdc after more deaths are linked to an outbreak of listeria from boar's head deli meat. what you should be looking out for at the grocery store when we come back this

11:54 am
sadly, nine people have died as part of this outbreak. the deaths have been reported in new jersey virginia, florida, tennessee, new mexico, new york illinois, and south carolina, and brianna, the cdc has been the investigating this outbreak since last month in july is when boar's head recalled 7 million pounds of its deli meat and so brianna, this is becoming something that is of concern. the recalled products contain the established number one to 612 on their packaging. so that's what you went to look for inside the usda mark of inspection, if you have any recalled products in your refrigerator, throw them out and what symptoms should people be looking out for jacqueline listeria, bacteria. >> and so if you have a listeria illness then the symptoms you typically see will be fever, muscle aches, fatigue, stiff neck, sometimes even seizures. and i will say,
11:55 am
brianna, there could be cases out there of people people who've gotten sick and they didn't see their doctor. and so they're illness wasn't reported. so this outbreak, it could possibly be larger than we realize and that's why again, it's important to check your refrigerator, look for any recalled products if you do have recalled products, keep in mind refrigeration does not kill the stereotype so that's why it is important to throw out anything that's been recalled all right, jacqueline, thank you so much for that coming up. >> vice president harris and governor walz sitting down for their first joint interview with our very own dana bash will take a look at what is at stake. it's going cnn news central is back in a moment the most anticipated interview of this election. >> kamala harris and tim walz sit down with dana bash for the first interview. harris and walz a cnn exclusive tonight at nine hi, my name is damian
