the presiding officer: the majority leader. mr. schumer: it should never take a tragedy of ashootings for the senate to pass commonsense gun safety thankfully today we have a chance to make our com republicans don't stand in the way. this afternoon, my colleague, senator the floor and seek passage of a federalstocks. i applaud this effort i applaud this bill i'm proud to support and speak on behalf of it. we must act because a few days ago the maga supreme court struck saying the federal government has no power to ban the of bump stocks. the maga court's decision is ance. it will endanger our communities,an easier for mass shooters to unleash carnage. last week's decision is another warning sign that this maga court is going off the deep end, alining with thereme elements of the hard right. bump stocks are truly dangerous they allow people to use rifles essentially as
10:11 am
machine which the national b 1930's. even donald trump banned bump stocks shortly after the deadliest shooting in american history when a shooter in vegas used overusand rounds where 60 were dead and hundreds injured. there was such huge presh uj after t pressure that he evenpn them. what today's bill does is return things to the status quo set by aying that bump stocks are dangerous and should be prohibited. senate republicans by and large then and should support it today. sadly some of our colleagues on th making it clear they will ignore the immense worry mostcans have about gun violence and will block today's bill. some on the other side say this bill is political theater and do nothing. that it's a stunt.
10:12 am
go tell families lost loved ones that this is a stunt, go tell those recovering from injuries that this stunt. are my republican colleagues serious? a stunt? they should stel that people of nevada. whenever republicans use the cliche she-- show vote. remember what happened the senate democrats and republicans worked together to pass legislation, something almost nobody thought possible. i'm verud both sides persevered because we passed that billnd good for this country already. today we have ahance to add to the success of two years ago by passing a simple measure that restores the prohibition on i implore my republi t the way of today's bill. if we can pass it today, we're one step closer to tragedy like what happened in las vegas never if republicans get in the way
10:13 am
today, if they decide to side with the gun lobby instead of parents andeachers and law enforcement, they're asking for another tragedy to strike sooner or later. on maga extremism in terms abortion yesterday i took the first procedural step to legislative calendar the reproductive freedom for sponsored by senator murray and myself and cosponsored by every woman senator on our side of the aisle. this measure right to choose and calls for enshrining the protections of roe into law as most americans say they want. i will work witagues to bring it to the floor as soon as as we approach the two-year anniversary of roe v. wade bturned this month could have been a month when the senate came together americans' reproductive freedoms. this could have been a month when both sides came together to pass commonsense legislation protecting reproductive care like contraception and f. have been a month when we put to rest the worries of the millions of women across
10:14 am
america enduring attacks on their reproductive freedoms in the aftermath of roe. instead, june has been a dismal month maga republicans and their attacks on women, families and reproductive rights. in the last two weeks, senate pus have shown that for all their attempts to sound moderatencare when it comes time to vote they choose maga extremeism over the wishes desires of the american when republicans blocked federal protections forago, they chose maga extremism over the american people. when republicans blocked federal protections for ivf a few days ago, they choose maga extremism over thepeople. and when donald tr to this day, to brag about working with senate republicans to hard-right supreme court justices t is choosing maga extremism over the americanrepublicans cannot run away from basic truth. that's why when we returnz7

bill to make sure that the congress ensures the right to choose the right to abortion will be before the senate for a vote. cannot run away from a basic truth --n women's health care is outright abysmal, shameful ausly out of step with the views of most americans. now, on the fire bill on a happier note i'm very proud to say that the senate willen to the president's desk bipartisan legislation to supportve firefighters in new york on long island and across the country. our firefighters are heroes whether it's new york's bravest at the fdny or the smaller volunteer departments protecting suburban communities in long island and in westchester, or protecting rural communities throughout upstate new york. our firefighters represent the best of our community. they rush to danr day to protect us putting all else those in need. now it's time for the senate to be there for our.

the fire grants and safety acteries of important grants that help keep our fire departments up ti was proud to help create these plans years back and i've long supported this legislation to protect our firefighters to have the support they need. the federalunding in these grants goes directly to making sure they have the lnnel they need to do their jobs safely and protecting firefighters we should spare no expens shows our firefighters that we have their backs as they rush to danger as they risk their livesr our safety. this is especially true small or more rural areas and in more sub suburban ar often not enough revenue for more resources. ou brave, they volunteer, they don't get paid but they like all the other firefighters and this grant makes sure that that happens in many places. so this bipartisan legislation will ensure our firefighters can continue working to keep their

communities safe in the larger cities where t fire departments and in suburban and rural america where there are departments. it unites both of them in supporting this voting yes and sending this bill to the es pr now, on immigration, 12 years ago this week president obama announced the creation of daca one the most important programs in our country's histor it changed the lives of thousands, hundreds of thousands of young people for theame to this country when they were very little and who, for allu@ intents and purposes knew america as their only home. announcing the most significant relief program for immigrant expanding protection for hundreds of thousands of undocumented spouses of u.s. citizens. they are not documented but they are married to a u.s. citizen. i applaud for today's truly significant announcement. hundreds of thousands of families together. that's what ittogether keep them together together will provide
10:18 am
peace of mind and most of all opportunity to contribute so that these people can contribute country even more. the announcement will help make our economy stronger as these spouses will be eligible for work permits at a time when workers in so many different professions, andility. the announcement is an affirmation of what america is truly at at its core -- a land built by immigrants a land of opportunity for people who want to contribute to this country, w our way of life is the best way if you workarhead and provide a better life for your children. the vast majority of benefit from today's announcement have been in this country decades, an 23 years they've been here but in a states of to them america's home america is where they built families america is where they gained skillsked hard contributed to our economy, earned ha -- living and had children who will often go on to do better things than . american dream, that's the american story, and
10:19 am
that's been true generation after a maga group of republicans decided they were let's not forget president reagan president h.w. bush, president w. bush were all pro immigration, until this 180-degree reversal by the republ anti-immigrant which hurts america. of course we need borders. of course. no one deglys that. but to -- no but to just bash immigrants is bad for america, bad for dreamers and pushing for comprehensive immigration reform is one of the issues that has burned strongest inside me since i joinebd the senate. i was proud of leading the gang of bipartisan with john mccain over ten years ago to pass reform which pamsed the house with -- which passed the house support, got 678 or 69 -- got 6tes before house republicans killed the bill house republicans poise beyond by the thinking of the maga republicans in their midst. i today celebrate today's announcements, but congress must do its part. republicans must stop getting in the way ofmeaningful,
10:20 am
comprehensive immigration reform and in the way of border se even support our tough border bill put together with vote. we're going to keep working until we get the job done bot border and in making america welcome will work hard become american citizens eventually. thank you, and i yield the floor.

to have the chance to talk agenda. to talk about the disasterhr president biden created at our southern border. a disaster he allowed to thrive unchecked for years despite the serious danger to our national security. or t how under the guise contraception, something that is not under threat i might add, up legislation that would not only funnel to all parenthood but would wipe out, wipe out conscience protections for health care providers. democrats' specifically targets the religious freedom restoration act which is bipartis passed in 1993 back when democ defending our first amendment freedoms. and thiss not democrats' only attempt to target this legislation and dictate americans can live according to their faith.
11:15 am
take for example, democrats' so-called women's health protection act, more accurately called the abortion on demand act which would prevent health care providers from protection under the religious freedom restoration act faith prevents them from performing -- abortions. apparently the quote personal fr mentioned earlier this month don't include religious freedom, at least not when your faithflicts with democrats' policy positions. and speaking of the abortion on demand act, mr. president, i find i interesting that in a month, the democrat leader intended to be quote, reproductive free not to bring up democrats'signature abortion legislation. is it possi thought that in a month in which he hoped to paint republicans as extrists it might not be a great idea to bring up democrats' radical abortion legislation lest
11:16 am
americans see just extreme democrats are onfact mr. president, democrats' bill might be the most extreme abortion ever considered by congress. the so-called women's healt would not only allow abortion through all 40 weeks o it would sweep away almost every co been upheld under roe and would make abortion at any time for essentially any reason the law of the land. oention wiping out the ban on taxpayer funding of ng that's been agreed upon by both sides for nearlyars. needless to say, this is farmerican people. a majority of whom believe illegal during the second three months of pregnancy and 70% of whom believe abortion should genera be illegal during the final three months.
11:17 am
not to mention the fact that it's also out of step with european abortion law with 46 of 50 european u.n. memberrtion on demand after 15 weeks. democrats from pursuing one of the most radical abortion regimes in the world. mr. president, in the coming weeks, i expect we'll see the democrats' summer of show votes i suspect the american people will not be fooled by democrats' politicking. andsrepublicans, well we're happy to discuss the democrat agenda anytime democrats would like to bring it up. mr. president, oor.
