pandemic. our first survey of teachers was in march of 2020, and we have seen the percentage of teachers who think that k-12 education is going in the right direction, has been cut in half, and so, educators, teachers are ready for change, and i'm not sure if the same way of doing things is going to address that. that's something that we will continue to survey and ask questions about. two teachers, two parents, to better understand what their concerns are today. and how things can change and to try different approaches, multiple approaches, and not have one, just one approach that's rigid for parents and educators alike. >> we'll end it there for now.
2:36 pm
poll diperna is vice president of research and education at ed choice. it's ed choice.org. appreciate your time this ey morning. >> thank you for having me, it's been fun. >> open forum, what's on your mind? richard is first in tsparta, ne jersey. democrat, good morning. >> good morning, first i wanted to explain all politics in one minute. politics is about people getting along and moving forward. they have to be nda little empathetic to people. one of the great things about humans is the empathy they have. some people have lots of empathy. they have a person who would give their left kidney to someone they don't even know. other people are not empathetic. they are very non-empathetic. they don't want to give anybody anything, and that's the definition of social, by the way, very non-empathetic.
2:37 pm
if i ask somebody who is a sociopath to give money for the poor or education, for universal healthcare, they would say no, okay if i ask republicans they would also say no. so the point is that the republicans tend to attract theh more sociopathic type of people and the democrats tend to attract the more empathetic people, sometimes to a fault. the war in the middle east, they talk about the genocide in gaza. there were two other wars going on in the middle east right now, 1 million people have been killed in yemen. the saudis have bombed them, the civilians and everything. new protests, nobody talks about it. but that's maybe a genocide when 1 million people are dying. in syria there are 77,000 who wh have died. that's still going on. that makes a genocide. but nobody is out there protesting that. only when the are killing
2:38 pm
muslims that people get upset, and all kinds of things go on. butth that's really what i have to say. >> richard in new jersey, this is walt in indiana. republican, good morning. >> yeah. anybody surprised that the aerial bombardment equipment provided by the united states to israel is american? american airplanes, american bombs and so forth. given the fact that the bombing has killed over 13,000 civilians, two thirds of whom have been women and children, should we be surprised that the allies of hamas are now attacking the american military people in the middle east? pa and even if they have the population of the middle east is overwhelmingly muslim, even if they hate the iranians or they hate hamas or hezbollah, do you think there might be
2:39 pm
broad-based specifically and concerned by the population, arab and muslim population of the middle east over the fact that so many civilians have been killed by the israelis in gaza. that is something that americans should really think about. >> stephen missouri, independent. good morning. it's open forum, what's on yourl mind? >> we do have to support ukraine and israel because if a we don't we are going to have to go over there and fight them ourselves, and as far as the wall, trump did nothing for the wall. he spent $8 trillion in four years. he did nothing for us. it all went to the wealthy and if the republicans deny this to the people, i don't care how they think we are, republicans ran up most of the debt. they will have a firestorm that they will never be able to put
2:40 pm
out against the republican party. thanks. >> on aid to ukraine, a vote expected today in the senate on the funding vehicle that would move the emergency funding legislation, over $100 billion is what the biden administration is requesting for ukraine, for israel, for taiwan, border security as well. that package -- the vehicle that would mean that package, a vote happening today in the senate. also today in the senate, a classified briefing and said unders expected to hear from ukrainian president volodymyr zelensky. that briefing coming a day after a letter from the white house to capitol hill saying that the u.s. is nearly out of money for ukraine. the letter coming from the budget chief of the united states. it was talked about yesterday in the white house briefing room, and again, more today on ukraine on capitol hill.

this is tabatha in colorado, democrat. good morning. >> good morning. this is open for him, right? >> yes ma'am. >> i'm calling to see if anybody watched rachel maddow's show last night. i think everybody needs to read the book so maybe we can come to the middle of where most of america is. and all start working together again to make sure, yes the world is safe, but if we lose america, everything is gone. >> that's tabatha in colorado. new books are often released on tuesdays, usually released on tuesdays, and liz cheney's new book, oath and honor, officially released today. a memoir and a warning. this is how the publisher describes it in the amazon
2:42 pm
website listing of it. a gripping first-hand account of the january 6th 2021 insurrection from inside the halls of congress, from origins to aftermath, as donald trump and his enablers betrayed the american people and the constitution, by the house republican leader who dared to stand up to it. liz cheney, her book oath and honor. this is kevin in ohio, independent. good morning. >> good morning. you just had a story on there about iran's role in israel/hamas war. today is the fifth, am i correct? 12-5-2023? >> that's the date. >> why is it 1w2w5w2w2w3 is 120, and iran's role in israel/hamas war equals 120? you guys are all beset by this jim autry. >> we'll hold off on conspiracy theories. we'll go to brenda in fort lee, new jersey. good morning. >> good morning america. i just have a quick comment about how president biden is handling things. he could be much better to people that are still over,
2:43 pm
bring them home, and the way he goes away every weekend instead of being in the white house, trying to figure out how to make america better is just so disappointing to me. i voted for him. and when it comes time to vote again, he's not getting my vote. it's just a shame on how he's running the country, right down the toilet. and i tell you something, please listen. it's later than we think and i'm voting for president trump. trump did a lot of good things for america when he was in office, and i'm hoping he'll get back in. thank you so much for listening. >> it's brenda in new jersey. it's just past 9:00 a.m. on the east coast. about 15 minutes left here in open forum. we are going to be joined by george conway in about 15 minutes. he's going to be talking about his new group, the society for the rule of law institute.
2:44 pm
you'll be able to chat with him. but for the 15 minutes, your calls, any topic in our open forum. did want to note the lead story in today's wall street journal getting a lot of attention. x u.s. envoy is held as a longtime cuba spy. this is just the lead paragraph of that story. a former senior u.s. diplomat who served in embassies across latin america was accused of spying for cuba's intelligence services for decades and one of the highest reaching and longest lasting security breaches of the federal government. that's according to a criminal complaint unsealed on monday, and it was attorney general merrick garland who announced the arrest of the former u.s. ambassador to bolivia, victor manuel rocha is his name. that's taken place during a press conference yesterday. here is a bit from it. >> the complaint alleges that rocha sought out and used his positions within the united states government to support cuba's clandestine intelligence gathering mission against the united states. after the fbi received information that rocha was a covert agent of cuba's
2:45 pm
intelligence service, an fbi undercover proceeded to engage with rocha on several occasions. as detailed in the complaint, rocha repeatedly referred to the united states as, quote, the enemy. during the undercover -- he told the undercover that his efforts to infiltrate the united states government were, quote, meticulous and, quote, es very disciplined. and he repeatedly bragged about the significance of his efforts, saying that, quote, what has been done has strengthened the revolution immensely. the fbi arrested rocha on friday in miami. he is making his initial appearance in u.s. district court for the southern district of florida this afternoon. as was always the case, the defendant is presumed innocent until proven guilty in a court
2:46 pm
of law. i want to thank the fbi, the department's national security division, and the u.s. attorney's office for the southern district of florida, as well as our partners at the state department's diplomatic security service for their excellent work on this case. those who have the privilege of serving in the government of the united states are given an enormous amount of trust by the public we serve. to betray that trust by falsely pledging loyalty to the united states while serving a foreign power is a crime that will be met with a full force of the justice department. >> attorney general merrick garland, that was yesterday. if you want to watch that full event you can do so at our website at c-span.org. back to your calls and open forum. this is david. lee's summit, missouri. independent, good morning. >> good morning. thank you for taking my call. i have two quick points. on the war in gaza right now, americans, if you do your research you'll find that netanyahu visited russia
2:47 pm
multiple times. i believe the last one was 2022. we all know that trump is friends with russia. netanyahu visits russia. and then netanyahu, who is under duress in the israeli government, all of a sudden he has the best intelligence service in hamas. and by the way, who put hamas in power? it was netanyahu, and that's not a conspiracy theory. that's the truth. and all of a sudden there's an attack that israel doesn't know anything about, and now we are not giving aid to ukraine at all. who does that benefit? which politician does that benefit? and the last thing i want to say is when americans keep calling and talking about how bad biden is doing, how trump did so well, americans have very short memories. do you remember the long food lines, the long gas lines, people around the world laughing at us? trump didn't do anything about covid until the last year of
2:48 pm
his term, over 1 million americans died and now gas prices are down, infrastructure projects all over the united states. but they still say that biden is a terrible president and trump was a better president. we've become a country where we don't believe anymore what we see. we believe what we hear on social media. i think that's a shame, because just look at what you've seen. stop looking at what you hear. thank you very much for taking my call. you do an amazing job by giving everyone a chance to speak. have a blessed day. >> that's david in missouri on israeli prime minister benjamin netanyahu. this story from al jazeera, he's set to face the resumption of his long-running trial on numerous corruption charges after a pause due to the war in gaza. a court in jerusalem set to start hearing the case which is
2:49 pm
focused on corruption charges against him this week. the trial was paused on an emergency order from the country's justice minister following hamas's attack on october 7th. netanyahu has been charged with fraud and bribery and breach of trust in three cases filed on 2019, known as case 1000, 2000, and 4000. this is bob in kingwood, texas. republican, good morning. >> yeah, thank you, john. the last caller was talking about believing everything you hear and what he basically spouted was that biden/trump influence. but i really wanted to comment that your last guest was excellent, speaking about middle east issues. he was very fair and balanced. i'm ready to have judge conway come on, a very well known trump hater as well, that's very much an activist for the liberal causes. but what i wanted to say about your last guest and what he i imparted to me was the statement by robert gates in the past that pretty much every foreign policy decision that biden makes has been wrong, and i think that a lot of people need to understand that, and i
2:50 pm
think that c-span will do a good job to let that information out to go >> thanks, bob in texas. this is anthony in florida, democrat. good morning. >> good morning. big john, john, i got to hurry up because my neighbor came over actually to give her a jump but i want to first call -- >> jump start of her car? >> yeah, i got to help her jump, she just came over. >> you should get to that but what's on your mind? >> there's one way we can get all this stuff done, john. what i think is we can make you the president of the united states and i'll be your vice president. i'll call you lord. >> tell you what, anthony. we'll hold off on that. go ahead and finish your comment because i got other people waiting and i'm running short on time. >> what we'll do, we'll first take care of that border. we'll have people paying who want to come across, also have
2:51 pm
the judges at the mexico and texas, in california border, and have them apply to that, through that process, and we'll also support you create. we'll help them get in nato and then we'll put a base over in taiwan, and then we'll help israel get through this situation that they have. but we know who will get it done. >> that's your platform, if any? >> that's what we're going to do, john. we're going to get it in order but he. thanks, john. >> good luck to your neighbor, anthony. this is taylor in new orleans, independent. good morning. >> good morning, i hope you're doing well. just based on the guests that you had recently and everything else, it really left me reeling. like what is the u.s.'s plan just on the power projection you are teaching? as a nation i really have to agree with that guest before during the trump
2:52 pm
administration. we were a laughingstock and i was in a remote village in switzerland in 2018. and in this village they've had people write their in a tourist destination. they're laughing, talking about fire and fury, like what's going on over there. our trust and our relationships not just with our partners in europe, the middle east was suffering i think as a result of not just that administration, but some other policies. but the u.s.'s ability to do soft power projection really matters. our ability to have stable relationships. i don't get how we going to do that if we bomb the middle east nonstop, if we keep absolutely burning the region. you know, there's no one left, are you going to take israel as a partner? israel doesn't care. israel does what's in israel's
2:53 pm
interest and america needs to do what's in america's interest. and that means essentially like backing off, all right? there's no reason why we should be helping them bomb gaza, mo which is compromised essentially half of the population is children. there's no reason. that's all my statement, thanks. >> taylor in louisiana, thanks for just one or two more calls. patrick and las cruces, republican. good morning. >> good morning, sir. so i wanted to call and i know we were talking a bit about israel, and i think honestly biden is doing okay on this one. i think we should stay out of it and try to keep it from becoming a wider event. but a couple callers mentioned how i think anybody objectively look at their wallet back d in 2019 was better situated than they are now, and i just have
2:54 pm
one comment. i think trump, while i found him infuriating sometimes, the superlatives and the greatest, most whatever all the time kind of language, but the fact is he talks to us directly every day. and i think we should really appreciate that because i'll tell you something on biden. i'm so tired of being lied to by john kirby and karine john pierre, and all these people that think we are so dumb, that we don't know what's going on, and i'm sorry. biden has barely spoken to the american people except when he did that state of ukraine speech for the state of the union last year. this, like trump spoke to us every day. he might have done it in all caps. he might have misspoke occasionally, but at least he communicated with the people, and he wanted to. and i think we should give a little more credit to that. >> that's patrick in new mexico. paul, missouri.
2:55 pm
last caller, open forum. what's on your mind? >> good morning, john. trump talked to us every day. he lied to us every day. i was calling about mike johnson. how much of life and the essence of life must you deny to believe that the earth is 6000 years old? you have to be in denial of earth's history. you have to be in denial of just about anything with ol og y on the end. these are the people that are running our country. if you don't see that as a danger, what's wrong with the taliban? what's wrong with the way they run things in saudi arabia? and those are the questions that the people in america who are smart enough to realize
