>> coming up on "washington journal," your close comments live, then we will talk about the border aid package in the impeachment mayorkas vote, with tom mcclintock. then with mark pocan. "washington journal" is next. >> the yays are 214, the nays, 216. the resolution is not adopted. [cheering]
7:01 am
host: with that, house republicans failed to impeach alejandro mayorkas for his handling of the southern border. after the high-profile vote yesterday evening, republicans vowed to try again in the near future when they said they had the vote for the second ever impeachment of the cabinet official. we are getting your reaction to that unsuccessful impeachment effort on phone lines split as usual by political party. republicans, (202)-748-8001. democrats, (202)-748-8000. independents, (202)-748-8002. a special line for border state residents, (202)-748-8003. that is also the number where you can send us a text. if you do, include your name and where you are from. otherwise, catch up on x at @cspanwj. on facebook.com/c-span.
7:02 am
you can start calling in now. we will start with headlines following the drama of that unsuccessful vote last night. first from fox news, the house failed to impeach alejandro mayorkas in a major blow to the gop, democrats slammed it as a sham. this morning, republicans humiliating failed impeachment of a hundred mayorkas explained, and "the hill" breaks down what became a dramatic moment at the end of that impeachment vote on the floor last night, writing that the failure came about because of a surprise appearance by al green of texas, the democrat who showed up unexpectedly, having recently had surgery wearing hospital scrubs. republicans enter the boat with two expected no votes from can buck of colorado and tom mcclintock of california. but then a third gop lawmaker mike gallagher also voted against impeachment.
7:03 am
a fourth republican, like more of utah, flipped his vote to know seconds before the vote closed. a procedural move that allowed it to come back to the florida later date. that is exactly what congresswoman marjorie taylor greene vowed to do last night in the wake of that failed vote. this is the congresswoman. [end video clip] -- [video clip] we knew it was going to be close coming in because the majority was razor thin. my colleagues who voted no will be hearing from their constituents, but we have a plan in place. there was a motion to recommit, and that means we can bring the articles of impeachment back to the floor may be as early as next week. this is not over yet. we can still bring back steve scalise, and we hope he is well and can come back soon. we look forward to having him come back and being a solid yes
7:04 am
on impeaching secretory mayorkas. [video clip] [end video clip] host: marjorie taylor greene. another high-profile vote expected in the senate today and an expected failed vote. this is the headline from the wall street journal, the border bill is headed toward the senate defeat, the bipartisan security proposal headed to debate in the senate along with $11 billion and attach foreign aid for israel, ukraine and taiwan. the bill came about after much negotiation, facing fears hostility from house and senate republicans with the package border provisions. senate minority leader mitch mcconnell confirmed yesterday that his members were prepared to take the legislation in a procedural vote today in the senate. that is what is expected to happen this morning. we are talking about it on "washington journal." democrats, (202)-748-8000.
7:05 am
republicans, (202)-748-8001. independents, (202)-748-8002. holding open the fourth line specifically for border state residents, (202)-748-8003. we will get to the phones first. steven in ohio, independent. good morning. caller: i just wanted to say i think the whole process was a waste of time. there are so many problems that are real that need to be addressed and this is just another way of playing politics and not addressing any of the things we need. with all this stuff going on on the impeachment. host: you think the impeachment is a waste of time. what about the border bill negotiated i republicans and democrats but now expected to fail in the senate because republicans were not supported?
7:06 am
caller: again, the same kind of thing. what is happening is they have these bills to make it convoluted that one piece fails the whole legislation. i am a big believer in supporting ukraine, and i believe they should pull the money out and say we need to put a build in to support that kind of foreign aid, and as they have to worry about the border security, and what i am seeing is a mess, i, and independent, so i always vote in the primary for the candidate i want to be president. this year, i am in ohio, so i hope nikki haley hangs in there. i will try to vote for her in the general election, just to refresh all this mess we have going on. if biden really wants my vote, he should sit down with his vice
7:07 am
president, harris, and say we are going to make a change. you can have any cabinet post you want or be the ambassador to paris or whatever, but we are going to get somebody who is from a border state to be the vice president who has fresh eyes, first-hand, on what is going on down there and figure out a way to stop it. host: got your point. john is next in maryland, democrat. good morning. caller: good morning. i am so sick of this, i don't know what to do. i wish c-span would bring up all of the sanctions of the nation of these people. that is the problem. these doggone democrats and republicans, american people are so distracted from what is going on. it is not a problem, we got sanctions on those nations, and they don't hurt nobody but the poor. they don't affect the rich. the american people need to wake up and understand, we create
7:08 am
this problem, all of these nations. i really wish c-span would go and look at all the stations on those nations. you will see that 95% of the people coming here are coming from the nations with the stations are. we create that problem, then we went to act like it is a big deal of the homelessness distraction in the country. the lack of good education, medicare, medical attention for everyone. america, please wake-up and understand our government is creating this problem. host: glenn in texas, on the line for border state residents. caller: hello? host: go ahead. caller: good morning, c-span. i saw something yesterday in the house that i thought would never happen. the democrats bought four votes to keep him from getting impeached.
7:09 am
it can happen again. they are a bunch of chickens and can buy votes anytime they want and do anything the democrats would like. host: why do you say buy votes? caller: well, they bought four votes yesterday to keep mayorkas in office. host: glenn, you will be hearing later in the show at 8:00 a.m., tom mcclintock, one of the republican no votes to read he explained the vote, saying he does not think this rises to the level of impeachment constitutionally. this is not how the constitution was designed, and that is why he said he voted no. caller: but why did the four republicans voted for the democrats? that means they were bought. host: if they vote against their party than they are bought you are saying? caller: yeah, democrats can buy votes from republicans anytime they want something to be
7:10 am
passed. republicans are a bunch of chickens. they don't want to stick together. the democrats are a bunch of lions over there, when one says something, the whole gang says it in exactly the same wording. republicans do not want to stick together, and that is what is going to be the downfall of this country. so what is going to happen in new york with the gangs. they are only going to get vigor and worse. host: -- bigger and worse. host: here are the three republicans who voted against her party yesterday, ken buck of colorado, tom mcclintock, constance, and the fourth no vote was blake moore. originally voted yes and then the vote became a tie at 215, and then at the end, he pushed his vote to know against that
7:11 am
being a procedural motion so republicans could bring the impeachment effort up later. they vowed to do so as earlier as next week. we are talking about the vote yesterday and the house and when it comes to border issues, the attention switching to the senate today, a procedural motion set to take place today on the bipartisan border bill, and chuck schumer promised to bring up that procedural motion. republicans signaled they will vote no and keep that legislation from advancing. this was chuck schumer yesterday in the senate. [video clip] >> are you concerned if you are not able to marshal, -- [indiscernible] then any sort of bipartisan legislation we need to work on with any chance -- >> this is so important for the security of the border that we will keep at it. this is not the last republicans will hear from us. we'll keep at it, have a vote
7:12 am
tomorrow, we will move further forward. stay tuned. [end video clip] host: that was yesterday in his weekly press conference with reporters just outside the senate chamber, a couple of headlines this morning about that border bill, that bipartisan bill that republicans now say is not good enough. one of those republicans who has been advocating against the bill, the former president trump, and his comment today from his former manufacturing czar peter navarro, calling it the senate amnesty bill, saying it will crush the country, saying it will do virtually nothing to stop illegal immigration, only regulate it. that is peter navarro in "the washington times" today. shifting over to thomas friedman and "-- in "the new york times," saying that the bill has
7:13 am
the potential to redefine the world, but the republican bumper sticker says america third. if you would like to read his column in "the new york times." back to your phone calls, gary in new hampshire, independent. good morning. caller: good morning and thank you for taking my call. i have two comments. first of all, i want to comment on the decision that the appeals were made on donald trump, which i think was a good decision. he is not above the law. nobody is above the law. as far as the direction he caused, number one, i am not excusing the people. they had no reason to be there. there is no excuse for them to be there, but why should they all face prosecution and he gets away with it scot-free? it is not fair. he interacted that whole thing. he started that whole riot. as far as the vote yesterday on
7:14 am
mayorkas, that was nothing but a clown show. they are all so donald trump's rear end so badly, it is not funny. who is the boss? the republican party or donald trump? it is about time people got away from donald trump and started into the business of this country. host: a lot of news happening in washington and around the country. to what gary discussed, a federal appeals panel yesterday rolled anatomists leave that donald trump is not immune to charges that he tried to overturn the 2020 election, setting the stage for another potential showdown at the supreme court. the former president is expected to appeal, which rejected the argument from his attorneys last month that any act by the president cannot be prosecuted unless he is first impeached and then convicted by the senate. that is the front page on "usa today." that is the story on the front
7:15 am
of many papers this morning. tomorrow, donald trump and the supreme court will be very much front and center, the colorado supreme court ruled that the president was ineligible to appear on the primary ballot, the bout for president in colorado -- the ballot for president in colorado under the insurrection act, the 14th amendment. oral arguments are to set place in the supreme court tomorrow at 10:00 a.m.. you can hear them on c-span, c-span.org and enjoy it on the free c-span now app. we will also talk about the 14th amendment and this case quite a bit throughout the entire show tomorrow on "washington journal." we would like to hear your thoughts on all of it, especially the field impeachment vote in the house. there is a separate line for border state residents this morning on border issues. peter, new jersey, democrat. caller: thank you for having me.
7:16 am
i just want to say that the republicans are not working for the republican people. they are working for themselves and donald trump. the package for the border [indiscernible] all right, we will go back again and see what the republican party says. they are not working for the republican people. host: that was peter aaron new jersey. republican, debbie, ohio. your next. caller: good morning. i am infuriated at the republicans in the political party right now. they represent a portion of the republican people, but they don't represent the majority. i and aggravated -- iam
7:17 am
aggravated that the politics with trump is keeping the voters from realizing the 10 realizing that h -- realizing that haley or someone else can represent the people. congress is not representing the people. they are representing trump. it is not fair to us. i am on the verge of saying they should all be impeached because they are not representing the people, and it is time that we understand that and look for the truth of what is going on in this coming election. host: you are a republican who supports nikki haley. do you think she will make it longer for you to have a chance to vote for her in ohio? caller: why should we have to
7:18 am
wait for her to be representative when we cannot even first trump to the side of that. that is not fair to the people. we have the right to have a race to nominees, and we definitely -- i don't think the majority of us, it is like he is at the bottom of the barrel and we don't have anyone else to push the way up. host: there was a race yesterday in nevada, the primaries, and donald trump is not on the ballot. nikki haley was. the former south carolina governor faced embarrassing results of the nevada primary yesterday. technically, they selected none of the candidates on the ballot to win the republican primary.
7:19 am
nevada allows voters to backup a specific candidate or pick none of the white house hopefuls. donald trump, again, not on the ballot. none of the candidates on the ballot option received about six to 3% of the vote yesterday. nikki haley received 31% of the vote, 86%, according, at this point, according to the associated press. that was from yesterday's primary in nevada. next in illinois, independent. caller: yes, i am a vietnam veteran, disabled. we have got to get a hold of the problem with the border. we see people coming through from china and everywhere else, we need to get the senate controlled. we need to get together and get a border control that can be controlled. the way to plug that hole in the
7:20 am
wall in california, this is got to soft. we have a lot of people who are going hungry because of the immigrants coming in, and up in chicago, they are freezing. it is time to get this thing under control and control how many, in. host: the hole in the wall in california, are you referring from that "62 minutes" report -- 60 minutes" report? caller: yes. host: what are your thoughts on this bipartisan border bill? caller: i don't agree that they should vote for it. there is a time to get control. all this bill does is bring people in, and it is numbers and numbers of immigrants coming in, and we cannot feed them. how are we going to take care of them? they are dying because we don't
7:21 am
have enough supplies for our own people. we have people in chicago died on the streets. it is time to stop supporting them and giving away gift cards and everything else. i know they have got to be taken care of, but these gift cards and everything else just incentivizes them to come into the united states. host: this was speaker johnson yesterday on this senate border package. again, the action is set to take place. you heard speaker johnson -- sorry, actions set to take place in the senate. mike johnson spoke yesterday about why republicans would be rejecting the border bill in the house, even if it were to make it to the senate. this was him yesterday. [video clip] >> nothing less than american sovereignty is at stake our nations sovereignty is at stake. this transcends politics, your political party, everybody should understand that this is a
7:22 am
fundamental responsibility of the federal government to secure the border. if you don't have a secure border, you don't have safety, security, or sovereignty. and republicans simply cannot vote for the bill with good conscience. that is why i declared it dead on arrival, and it looks like right now it may be in jeopardy, on life support, senate. we welcome that development because this is a matter that must be addressed and in a manner that actually solves the problem. we have been urging from day one, literally the day i took the gavel in late october, urging the senate and white house to consider provisions of hr2? why? because it has the necessary components to solve the problem. we will reform the asylum, the broken system, the broken parole process and policy the administration has pursued, and we go forward. that is necessary to solve the problem, and everybody knows it.
7:23 am
we took 64 house republicans to the border in january -- i sound like broken record, but why don't they get it? the people in charge of the senate don't get it. chuck schumer does not understand it or care. i don't know when chuck schumer went to the border last, but i can tell you what we saw, and absolute humanitarian catastrophe. it broke our hearts and infuriated us at the same time. cannot continue. and the people are in charge of enforcement are the ones who told us those of the necessary components to fix it. [end video clip] host: you heard him talk about the house republican border bill, hr two, the senate bipartisan bill that will get procedural vote today in the senate. this is what is in that border deal, $20 billion and border investments, includi hiring new border patrol officials and panding the capacity of facilities, forcing the department of homeland security
7:24 am
to shut the border if illegal ossing tops 5000 migrants or an average of 8500 and a single day. it would increase the threshold requirements for migrants aing asylum that requires all of tm to be detained or tracked, adding 50,000 working family visas a year over the next five years, protects children from aging out of legal status, and a pathway for afghan evacuees who left their country after the u.s. withdrawal there. that is some of what is in the eye partisan border deal, the one that is expected to fail in a procedural vote today. you can watch it on c-span two today. this is kathy in florida, democrat. caller: this is kathy. oh brother. i will tell you. i am glad you played back
7:25 am
johnson's tape. he is for it, then against it, then it is dead in the house, but it might be dead on arrival in the senate, and i think we are being pumped by the republic -- punked by the republicans. i really do. marjorie taylor greene said last night something about how because they think since representative crane -- representative crane came out of the hospital, and the democrats were being sneaky, and she thinks she is supposed to get democrats to get her party in or out or whatever -- i don't know. they need to talk to nancy
7:26 am
pelosi and find out how to count votes. host: i would like to hear your thoughts on the headline in today's "washington post" on the opinion pages, the gop dog cut the card again after months or decades of running on tightening the border, house republicans are suddenly paralyzed when democrats offer them a chance to do exactly that. caller: this is not the first time they have done this. they are a disaster. i mean, the whole mess is a disaster. i did not see the article, but i do know that "ulster general" -- "wall street journal" came out yesterday, and they are the most conservative paper i can think of, and everywhere you look, like i say? host: this is doug in the garden state, republican. good morning. caller: i think people have
7:27 am
forgotten the whole border mess we have is all on joe biden and the democrat administration. one of the first things he did as president was reverse title 42 and the remaining in mexico policy, which was effective, so now we have 3 million illegal immigrants coming in every year, and now we have a problem, like they have no part in it. this is all on them, and now they just turn around and say it is republicans because we will not cave into letting 5000 illegal citizens come here? this is absurd. host: phone lines again, democrats, (202)-748-8000. republicans, (202)-748-8001. independents, (202)-748-8002. and that special line for border state residents, (202)-748-8003. yesterday, there was a floor
7:28 am
debate surrounding the impeachment of secretary alejandra mayorkas. this is michael mccaul during that impeachment. [video clip] >> senator mayorkas took an oath to protect our nation from all enemies, foreign and domestic. he has violated that trust. today, i intend to personally uphold the oath of the office. in my 25 years of dealing with the border as a federal prosecutor and a former chairman of the, i have never seen it is broken. that is because of one man's actions, his refusal to enforce the law, is revision of successful policies, his breach of public trust, his dereliction of duty, has led to 8 million encounters, 300 on the terror watch list, we .2 million aliens released into the interior, enough to fill 13 states.
7:29 am
200,000 young americans have died due to fentanyl poisoning. these numbers are clear, secretary mayorkas is the architect of destruction, and the legal justification for impeachment is strong. in the supreme court decision, the united states versus state of texas, the court examined a statute that mandated that the government should take into custody any alien committed and aggravating felon, not discretionary but mandatory, and by failing to uphold the law, he has released dangerous criminals into our communities and has put every american life at risk. the supreme court justice in 1883 said, "and admiral has neglected to safeguard the seas ." and that is the case we have here. he has failed to defend our
7:30 am
borders. the founders clearly believed impeachable offenses included neglect of duty, a violation of public trust, injury to society read when asked before the supreme court if impeachment is a proper remedy, president biden said, "in the face of a dramatic abdication of statutory responsibility by the executive branch, such steps would be warranted." sec. mayorkas is guilty of those impeachable offenses. he is destroying the fabric of this nation and americans agree. [end video clip] host: that was michael mccaul yesterday on the house floor. democrats also making the argument against impeachment yesterday. this was jamie raskin. [video clip] >> we are here because of the goose chase to impeach joe biden has produced nothing.
7:31 am
even fox news is lampooning the fact that expert witnesses repeatedly say president biden did nothing wrong and there are no grounds for impeachment. more than a dozen gop members and biding districts do not want to go anywhere near that production, so the trump-putin make affection -- maga faction has been given this worthless trinket of a consolation prize, the opportunity for a slapstick impeachment against a member with unimpeachable and what makes this farce tragedy is that sec. mayorkas in the u.s. senate have been looking for months to proceed precisely the border compromise that was demanded. miraculously, they have gotten to a bipartisan agreement with billions of dollars more in border patrol officers, judges,
7:32 am
sentinel action machines, -- fentanyl detection machines, and it was good enough for mitch mcconnell, dozens of gop senators, "the wall street journal," but the house magas would not take as for an answer because donald trump is not want a border solution, he would like a border problem. there is nothing else to run on. and vladimir putin certainly does not want $60 billion going to the heroic people of ukraine to fight his filthy imperialist invasion. all over the world, democracy and freedom are under siege, and all of our colleagues can think to do is to sell out our democratic allies and sellout the cost of human rights, and then impeach a cabinet secretary looking diligently to solve the immigration problem that they claim to care about. [end video clip] host: democrat jamie raskin on the house before the vote that failed to impeach alejandra mayorkas.
7:33 am
this is the headline from "daily beast" this morning, the gop wants to impeach biden and cannot even get mayorkas. swing and miss is what they write. this is mary, a republican in the hoosier state, good morning. caller: good morning. thank you for taking my call. host: go ahead. caller: yes, i believe to solve the problem, but the policies back at work and this should solve half the problem until we get to a better solution because that is not coming between the republicans and democrats. this is political plate on both sides. and all these people have come across 2 million, they are not fleeing the but poverty.
7:34 am
there are so many in this country where we don't know what their background is and what they are willing to do to this country. host: that was mary in indiana. this is david in michigan, democrat. caller: hi. thank you for taking my call. i will tell you, it is very simple, it is total republican failure. the house is run by trader trump t -- traitor trump, and the republican house bow to him and do whatever he says. under trump, there was 6500 immigrants trying to cross the border every day. under biden, only 3000 every day, so that is the first fact that nobody knows. and the second fact, trump is a
7:35 am
total failure, and he has ruined the house. that's the second fact. the third, over the year, republicans have had control of the house, and they have done nothing, zero. they have accomplished nothing. that is the third fact. host: that is david. this is june in wisconsin, independent. good morning. caller: good morning. host: go ahead. caller: i am so disappointed in all of those high paid so-called representatives in washington. as far as the border, just turned back and all the jobs we sent? -- recent to mexico, why are they coming here?
7:36 am
i am so confused. they should be ashamed. all of them. trump is not president, yet, they listen to him. what is going on? what has happened to america? we are being so let down by our so-called leaders. shame on them, and god help us. we need help. host: this is paul in san antonio, border state. good morning. caller: thank you for taking my call. the republicans do not want to fix the border, they want to campaign on the border, while trump is on the way to the 10 jury -- to the penitentiary, didn't want to fix the border, they want to campaign on the border.
7:37 am
that is all there is to it. thank you. host: this is jr in virginia, republican. good morning. caller: good morning. thank you for taking my call. i have listened to all these people who have talked, and it all comes down to this, what was the first thing biden done when he came into office? he tore up everything trump did on the border. then he campaigned on everybody, now, and that is what happened. he had one person talking about only 3000 comes in a day. there were 2000 people, so you figure that average a day, and then this bill, they talked about taking the rights of texas away, so where they cannot go to their coats -- courts, but they
7:38 am
had to go to d.c. [indiscernible] two, the cartels are listening to this, they could end up sending 4500 people in a day, and that would be a steady flow, and i am sick of everybody blaming trump. trump is not president. joe biden is. this is his mess that he started that he needs to clean up with the stroke of a pen. host: speaking of joe biden, he spoke yesterday about the proposed border deal, the one that will get a procedural vote today in the senate. this was him yesterday. [video clip] pres. biden: for as long as you know, the immigration system has been broken. five months ago, i instructed my team to begin negotiations with bipartisan senators to finally
7:39 am
fix our immigration system. for months now, that is what they have done, working around the clock through the holidays and over the weekends. it has been extraordinary effort . the result of all the hard work is a bipartisan agreement that represents the most fair, humane reforms and our immigration system in a long time, and the toughest set of reforms to secure the border ever. now, all indications is that the bill will not even move forward to the senate floor. why? a simple reason. donald trump. because donald trump exit is bad for him politically. in the country, he is not for it. he would rather weaponized issues and actually solve it, so for the last 24 hours, he has done nothing i have told him that reach out to the house and senate republicans and intimidate them to vote against
7:40 am
the proposal. it looks like they are caving. frankly, they owe it to the american people to show some spine and do what they know to be right. [end video clip] host: president joe biden yesterday from the white house. about 20 in its left and "washington journal" for this segment. democrat, good morning. caller: how are you doing? it appears everybody has a solution and then they decide to do this and that, but they don't realize they need to talk to each other. that is what i don't understand. you have got to talk to each other in order to try to make a solution. you do not have to take sides. when you take sides, you are
7:41 am
dividing the country. i don't care if you are democrat, republican, independent, whatever. you need to talk to each other because we do not know the solution. host: james, the border deal that came together with the help of months of at least a few senators from each side talking to each other, what are your thoughts on that deal? caller: i think that they tried their best to try to come to a resolution to help things move forward, but i don't understand -- i am not in that money minded power and stuff, but you have people who are working together to try to resolve an issue that has been going on for years. joe biden could not make all this happen in years. we were talking about 30, 40, 50
7:42 am
years read i don't know how many, but when you have got to get people talking together instead of people just taking sides of we are not going to do this or that, and the only thing that is going happen is that it is going to implode on words. host: as james in north carolina. staying in the tar heel state, elizabeth city, charlie, republican. caller: thank you. as far as the border deal goes, i think that biden, president biden could do just like president date, which he did, he put out an executive order and he shut the border down. president biden could do the same thing, but they don't want to do it because remember when president obama and his wife michelle got on tv and said they wanted to fundamentally change
7:43 am
america? what do they mean by that? they meant by bringing in people from all over the world entire country so they can have some type of one world order if the democrat surrogate full control -- democrats ever get full control. i live in a subdivision where there are 300 something homes, and almost 95% of the people have a privacy wall around her yard so people cannot get in on the state would like them to get into the yards. end of my story. host: north carolina, dependent, good morning. caller: how are you doing? i have kind of agree with what the last caller said, but this whole immigration border situation is making me change
7:44 am
the way i think. i think the biggest problem is that this is going to leave a hole in the on the voting agenda, but i think they are are both doing a poor job on the border right now. host: this is john in massachusetts, independent. good morning. caller: good morning. i would like to say that in the beginning, biden just numbered out of the border. they had $32 million worth of supplies left to finish the border and they scrapped it. biden's plan was to just have millions of people try to convert the vote. [indiscernible] they are buying energy off of saudi arabia, russia has money
7:45 am
to fund the war. there are so many things going on. another thing, biden is calling republican maga discriminating and being racist towards donald trump. they have turned this whole thing upside down. they have brainwashed all of society in the country. they have given oil manufacturing. they have turned it into a race war, they are funding banks so houses will never be affordable. they are getting a bank loan up to $1.6 million so no houses are coming down, people. we have to change that policy and this is an assault on the working class. host: you talked about the cost of a barrel of oil. today, it is below $80, well below that $100 mark that
7:46 am
usually gets a lot of attention. there is the chart from the business insider chart over the past year. you have seen how it has come down since the fall in late summer time. today, about $70 a barrel -- $78 a barrel. caller: by cutting american competition, we are leaving ourselves wide open. we should be introducing our own oil anyway. there are much money in our energy, with the cost of electricity down, it brings the price of everything down. we are giving all of our money away to foreign countries. why are we doing that? tell him. host: bill in michigan, democrat. tell me the name of the town in michigan where you are. caller: winedot, michigan. host: i will remember that. go ahead. caller: the border is wide open and we know why.
7:47 am
joe biden and the democrats must replace the black voters. they are just not counted on as they used to be. in detroit, they are definitely looking to flood the empty city with illegals so they can get their vote. and the court of appeals talking about we don't allow presidents to kill people, what are we ever going to trust obama when they killed that american citizen and his son? host: who are you talking about? caller: during obama's term, there was an arab american who was overseas, talking nice about obama, and they had him bombed. they bombed his 16-year-old son, too. nothing ever comes up about that, but he kills an american citizen. host: bill, you are on the line for democrats, seems like you are fairly critical of
7:48 am
democrats. what makes you a democrat? caller: third-generation. i watched till clinton and newt gingrich give all the jobs away -- bill clinton and newt gingrich give all the jobs away. if we do not have no jobs, we would not be so worried, but we have no jobs -- if we had jobs, we would not be so worried, but we have no jobs. caller: thank you for taking my call, i just would like to make a comment, the democrats had the house senate and presidency for the first two years, and the only thing i can see that the accomplished was opening the border, reversing every policy trump had, and now they want to blame republicans for everything. without looking at what these immigrants are doing to our country, we are seeing these immigrants are letting go.
7:49 am
what do you think they're going to start doing to the citizens of the united states? they are shooting birds at american people. i just do not understand how they are getting away with this with no punishment. and biden is the total reason for every bit of this. he is the total reason. they want to blaine trump for everything that has gone wrong in this country when biden is the president. host: james is next, alabama, democrat. good morning. caller: yes, they just would like to set us up for another civil war. they don't care nothing about this country. they decide, i am a democrat, and they will be another civil war. host: why would they want civil war? caller: because they do. look how they are acting. they want another civil war in
7:50 am
this country, and it is close to happening. people are ready to shoot those coming across the border, so they are just trying to set us up for another civil war. host: glenn, waterloo, iowa, republican, good morning. caller: the only question i have is this bill, if they would pass a bill that only covered the border and did not have to add all these billions of dollars to go other places, i think there would be no problems for passing that build. -- bill. host: you do support the compromise as long as it is decoupled from funding overseas? caller: exactly. every time they make a bill, ok, we will give you this, but you have got to give us all of this to go other places. just covers the border crisis, period, with nothing added to it. host: republicans in the house
7:51 am
tried to pass a measure yesterday. this was also a high-profile build, $17 billion to aid israel. what were your thoughts on that? that ended up going down and failure yesterday, i should note. caller: again, you have added something to the bill about just protecting the border. host: this was a separate bill, not coupled with the border. this was a separate stand-alone bill to help fund israel. caller: i understand, but we first have to take care of our own country, so let's pass a bill that just covers and only talks about our border, nobody else's. host: that is glenn in iowa. this is punch bowl news, the washington newsletter, that comes out daily. you have seen it couple of times on this program. this is how they describe what

happened yesterday in the house between that impeachment vote and the failed vote on israel funding, saying tuesday's debacle, the failed alejandra mayorkas impeachment and then choosing to lose the aid vote to israel is truly one of the most embarrassing days in recent gop history, but regardless of what one things of the marriage of either bill, losing the votes shows the house republican legislative process is not optimized for winning. gop leaders can reverse votes down the road, but the damage to the reputation here is immense, and they go inside speaker johnson's leadership circle, saying that many doubt his decision-making capability while being forced to execute his questionable strategy, and among we can file gop lawmakers, a lot of people are scratching their heads about where he is leading them, and they break down that the mayorkas impeachment vote and the 17 billion dollar aid to

israel vote yesterday. this is jerry, new jersey, republican. caller: good morning. any of your callers did respond the way i was thinking too, but if there are 8500 a day, that is over 3 million in a year, so it is really not doing anything and they are trying to give us that. secure the border act 260 days ago was done that they ignored, and now it will wipe out 17 states, like they just said, but biden could do it. correct me if i am wrong, but didn't trump just say, all right, we are going to remain in mexico, and the democratic party went insane, but that was a presidential order, and couldn't
7:54 am
biden do the same thing? couldn't he, john, just say, remain in mexico? host: presidents are allowed to have executive actions. on your border numbers, this is from the customs and border patrol, their numbers on land border encounters on the southwest border, going back to 2021 this year in 2024, and they go october to october, so they go to the fiscal year, as it is known, 785,000 encounters since october, and those numbers are up-to-date and december 2023, some 2.5 million encounters, 2022, 2.4 million, 2021, 1.7 million encounters, all of this is available at cpd.gov, where they post these numbers. jerry, did you want to finish a comment? caller: yes, we already have

over 8 million illegals just since biden took office and i think about the 100,000 children that nobody knows where they are. i think about the 200,000 fentanyl overdoses. i personally know four people who have died from sentinel overdoses, the critical care nurse, it is scary the amount of overdoses that come into our emergency room. this has got to stop. thank you. host: about five minutes left in this first segment of "washington journal," taking your calls. julie in texas, democrat. caller: good morning. i want to say that first, yesterday, after that immunity ruling came out about -- i felt some sense of relief and after
7:56 am
the impeachment vote lost, i shoulders relaxed, and then when the israel bill lost, i felt good, and then all i can say is imagine all of the millions of dollars we spent on the congressman, their secretaries and staff, the senators, their secretaries and staff, with millions of dollars spent for nothing to get done, and it was the new speaker johnson who told everybody last year that we must secure our border before money should go to ukraine or israel, and all of our senators, four are bipartisan, they did that bill, and now it is dead on arrival, and it is obvious that they are only doing what is for donald trump, and they care nothing about the people.
7:57 am
i say that every fentanyl death from this day forward is on the republicans. host: pamela, florida, independent. caller: good morning. the bipartisan bill, let's take a look at it. please. i am just asking that representatives govern in a bipartisan manner. the house, dual speakers fiasco -- they cannot get anything done. i know this is an issue that trump would like to run on, but it is an issue that needs our attention. the border security, as an election issue makes me lose
7:58 am
confidence in our government. and we need to bunch ukraine and israel and border bill together into one bill, one bipartisan bill. look at the bipartisan bill. i am asking the senate, house of representatives to do their job. host: one more call, ken has been waiting, and sylvania, republican. good morning. caller: i apologize, i called in on the republican line, and i, an independent. -- i an an independenm. -- i am an independent. i find it completely ironic that simultaneously, they are trying to impeach mayorkas while also killing a border bill. it is a real head scratcher. the other thing that is ironic

deliberations and rejected it because it would place the executive branch under the control of the legislature and destroy the architecture of the constitution. even if it were impeachable, the other question you have to ask is a practical one and is in a fantasy world in which two thirds of the senate would actually remove him from office, he would simply be replaced with another left-wing cabinet secretary carrying out exactly the same policies. it is not going to improve things to replace him with alexandria ocasio-cortez. it is not going to be solved by placing another left-wing official with another. it can only be solved by replacing the entire administration and that can only be done by the american people at the ballot box. host: you opposed -- the impeachment of donald trump. there is an investigation by

8:07 am
migrants to be released every day into the country. when it reaches 4000 and the president has the discretion to close the border and it is 5000 a day, he is required to do that. if you compare that to work by his doing, that is an improvement. if you consider that the next president may well be elected specifically to secure our borders again, that is a giant step backward. host: is it a matter of finding the right number? guest: no, i have made a lot of trips to the border. i have talked to border control. two observations, number one, we cannot enforce the law, we only write the laws. i said what laws do you need me to write? they would tell me we don't need a new laws, we need to enforce the laws we already have. there is a great deal of discretion in the enforcement of
8:08 am
those laws. we saw that between the trump and biden administration. today trump left office, our borders were secured. there remain in mexico policy brought asylum claims to a trickle, the border wall was nearing completion. we were enforcing court orders deportation. joe biden reverse all those policies and begin what has become the largest illegal migration in recorded history. it depends upon who the president is and whether he enforces the laws. the problem with the senate bill is it would tie the hands of a future president and bind him to release up to 4000 migrants a day into the country. the cartels have complete control of the border. you don't cross the border without their permission. they want civilly regulate the flow at 3999 per day.
8:09 am
that is 8 million migrations a year. we cannot sustain that. host: the other one in the house yesterday, $17 billion in aid for israel. guest: is a tragedy that failed. host: your vote was for? guest: absolutely. host: what happens with that bill now, what happens to the funding for israel? guest: it was the simplest single bill presented to the congress in my years. we had conservatives that did not vote because it was paid for -- it was not paid for. we had democrats that opposed it because they are pro-hamas. i don't believe the failure of that bill should reflect the will of congress. the conservatives who voted against it should consider carefully their perspective on this and what was more

important, the survival of israel for -- of israel or an appropriation that is not paid for. i am sympathetic to their concerns, i served on the budget committee several years. i think they have their properties backwards and i'm hoping they will step back and reflect on that. host: your thoughts on new aid for ukraine? guest: i support military assistance for ukraine for the same reason. we have dictators around the world. china, north korea, iran, they are watching all of this carefully. if putin is allowed to subjugate ukraine, if we lose israel in the middle east, that will be a powerful signal to dictators to march on their objectives.
8:11 am
i am afraid we would see this nation drawn into a major conflict. we are not prepared to fight. host: in pennsylvania, anthony, you are on with republican tom mcclintock. caller: good morning, congressman. i admire your tenacity about the voting you made yesterday -- of the vote you made yesterday. you mentioned before that alejandro mayorkas is not enforcing laws that already exist. the impeachment process that you voted against, the 214 of your colleagues voted for, they believe this is constitutional. you are on a team. the way to send a message for
8:12 am
this administration to enforce the law is to essentially be impeached. apparently that mechanism is not what you believe to be true. what is your mechanism to make the biden administration enforce the laws that already exist? guest: it is not going to be solved by bills that would be signed, laws that want be enforced. it will only be used to admit more illegals into the country. it will not be fixed purpose and one left-wing official with another. it can only be fixed by the american people by replacing the entire administration. people ask how could this be happening to our country, the answer is simple. if you voted for biden and the democrats, this is what you voted for. this is what they promised to
8:13 am
do, this is what they did. americans are rapidly coming to that conclusion. there is a lot of buyers remorse among biden voters watching all of this unfold in their communities. to my all that water with unconstitutional impeachment is a huge political mistake in addition to being a constitutional mistake. you dumb down the standards for impeachment. who is going to oppose the democrats when they use the same standard to impeach clarence thomas and the other conservatives on the supreme court and impeach the next republican and his secretaries. there is a wonderful scene from "a man for all seasons" who said he would cut down every law in ingrid -- every law and ingrid to get to the devil.
8:14 am
andy says -- if you cut them all down and you are just the man to do it, do you think you can stand upright in the winds? i give the benefit of the law for my own safety's sake. host: also. in the pages of the washington post. here's a picture of the congressman captured "tom mcclintock leads a conference meeting on tuesday. he was one of the few members who voted against impeaching alejandro mayorkas leading to a stunning rebuke." the headline sang "speaker plans to bring up the vote to impeach again." what happens next time he brings it up? guest: i cannot read minds and tell fortunes. i can only tell you my own mind and his pencil set not changed since the constitution was written.
8:15 am
host: do you think you will be able to convince any of your colleagues to change their votes? guest: i cannot read minds, i don't know. i will try. host: alexander from new york. your next. you are next -- you are next. caller: thank you for taking my call. congressman, you just said the chaos of the biden administration. there are things i do not support for the democratic party. you discussed the chaos and the dictatorships around the world. what is the alternative? as a party, what is your platform? guest: defend ukraine and defend israel so we do not have to defend ourselves in the future. you read the history of the 20th century, it is pretty clear that
8:16 am
if the allies had moved against his or at least, world war ii would have never started. there is a story about winston churchill and roosevelt at the athletic conference, roosevelt bids across and says our boys are having a terrible time coming up with a name for this work. what are you calling it? churchill says we are calling at the unnecessary work, no war was easier to prevent. that is what i am seeing in ukraine and israel right now. caller: i am from florida but i am in california. it is alarming the amount of homeless people in this state. obviously we have a housing crunch in this country. i am wondering how people are supposed to find places to live.
8:17 am
millions of people are still allowed to come into the country. that is supposed to ensure domestic trade quality -- domestic tranquility. if you are allowing illegals into the country, how does that ensure domestic tranquility? guest: you are absolutely right. i have been asking this question of democrats for years. i asked alejandro mayorkas and he had to answer. how does it improve our schools to pack classrooms with non-english students? how does it improve health care to pack our emergency rooms with illegals demanding basic free medical care? how does it help the safety of our communities to make it all but impossible to deport criminal illegal aliens or flood our streets with federal? -- with fentanyl? how does it strengthen arsenal for safety net -- our social
8:18 am
safety net to allow 5 million illegal immigrants into this country that are impoverished and desperate and have to be supported by the american people? i have never gotten an answer to these questions. i think the answer is self-evident, this is destroying our country. it has to stop. look where they released into the country, 3.3 million have been processed and released in defiance of the law. while the border patrol has been properly overwhelmed -- has been entirely overwhelmed, we have seen another 1.8 million got aways. these are people we watched crusty. we could not stop. that is a population the size of the combined states of iowa and west virginia. as i said, the only way this is
8:19 am
going to be changed is by the american people at the ballot box. this was set in motion by the administration and it can only be stopped by replacing this administration with one willing to defend our borders and uphold our loss and defend our country -- our laws and defend our country. host: san andreas, california, this is ali. caller: good morning. i live in mcclintock -- he is more representative and i called his office a lot. i called your office and asked why he did not want to impeach alejandro mayorkas and you told me it would be dead in descendant anyways and it would do no good -- dead in descendant -- in the senate and, due to good. guest: -- i wrote a paper and i
8:20 am
hope they will send it to you. caller: are you going to let me finish talking? guest: sure. caller: you put hr two of which you knew would be dead in descendant -- in the senate. yet you did that. obvious, argument, you will not breach america's -- you will not impeach alejandro mayorkas because you said it would be dead in the senate. guest: i view 802 which is the -- i view hr to=wo -- hr two a blueprint for the next administration. we have laid out what would be an abuse against our laws and made enforcement by crop much easier to do. that is our job in the house, to
8:21 am
write good legislation. we send over to the senate. our principal concern is that the impeachment resolution dramatically reduces the threshold for impeachment that will haunt our countries for -- our country for many years to come. this is something that the delegates at the constitutional convention debated in great detail. they were concerned if it was not nearly confined to bribery or high crimes and misdemeanors, it would destroy the foundational architecture of our country, the separation of powers which has kept us -- kept us free. host: plus minutes left with conner smith tom mcclintock. this is ruben in philadelphia. caller: how are you doing? i was listening to the rhetoric that everybody uses about people coming across the border, they
8:22 am
are rapists and criminals and all of that. isn't this the same rhetoric they used in the last century toward the italians, the irish, the mexicans, and the polish? look how good are these people turned out to be and they are contributing to our society. to demonize these people he waited demonize the irish, the italians, and the polish he is the same thing you're doing now. the speaker said he wanted the bill attached to ukraine and israel with more border -- and he comes up with a border policy and you are ejecting that because of donald trump? this isn't right. guest: my concert with the senate bill has nothing to do with trump but that it would tie the hands of a future president like tom o'connor who wants to
8:23 am
secure our borders. the first part of your question, you forget any important distinction between the immigrant that came at the beginning of the 20th century and the illegal immigration we see today. the immigrants who came at the beginning of the 20th century came over being our laws. they were all -- they came obeying our laws. they were immigrants who came to our country because they want to to raise their children as americans. they obeyed all of our laws. they waited in line. they did everything our country asked them to do. lest we forget the millions of illegal immigrants today coming to this country during the same thing, obeying our laws, respecting our nation, and doing everything we ask of them. what we are talking about is something very new and very dangerous. that is a mass illegal migration in defiance of our laws.
8:24 am
that is a very sharp distinction. the people i have found who are the angriest about the mass illegal language -- mass illegal migration are the illegal immigrants watching millions of people cut in line in front of them. host: when migrants come across the border and claim asylum, are they obeying our laws? guest: they are not. it is a federal crime to cross the border between ports of entry. they are committing a federal crime. it is a felony if they have done it before and this is the second offense. asylum is specifically reserved for people who have been discriminated against, persecuted by their government because of their membership in a specific class. religion, race, that sort of thing.
8:25 am
the moment they crossed the first international border, they have separated themselves from that government persecuting them. they are entitled to claim asylum in that country, not entitled to cross through five other countries and illegally enter hours. -- enter ours. most of the asylum claims are phony. they don't meet the criteria. they are deported. this immigration -- this administration is not enforcing that. they have been ordered deported because they don't meet the criteria and they are still here. unfortunately, the mass migration we are seeing, under this administration, you illegally cross the border. the first thing you do is to commit the crime of illegal entry. make a funny claim of asylum and
8:26 am
instead of being detained, this administration will release you. we will get free snacks, free food, free clothing, free medical care, free tickets anywhere you want to go in the country. quite often, cash. when your case comes up five or six years from now you're ordered deported, that the portion order want be enforced and you simply wait for the next wave of amnesty. that is what is driving these folks because it works. host: the caller brought up donald trump. i want to get your reaction to the federal appeals court rejected the president's claims of absolute immunity when it comes to him facing trial. guest: i don't think there is absolute immunity there. i agree with the court. host: do you think the supreme court will agree? guest: i can't read minds but i
8:27 am
suspect so. their reasoning was sound. host: in -- independent. caller: i commend you for not following the impeachment thing going on over in the house. somebody who has been through the immigration system, i can tell you if you get to me in that situation, i can fix it in 90 days. i am pretty sure you guys know exactly what you need to do up there to fix the situation. i have been listening to you carefully this morning and i hear you saying that the best way to fix this situation is to change the president. i disagree. the best way to fix the situation is for you guys to get together, the democrats and republicans, and do your job.
8:28 am
passed laws that will take some time, that cannot be changed by any president. biden was supposed to change all of the rules that donald trump put in place. that is not the way to go about it. the way to go about it is for you to put your talking points aside coming together, and fix this once and for all. host: you said you came through the immigration process. when did you come and how did you come to the process? caller: november 1, 2003 through a visa. i went through the process, got my green card. host: thanks for the call. guest: that is exactly the kind of person we need from around the world, who obeys the laws and respects our country and is here because he loves america. i have to point out something.

the same laws were in place the day joe biden took office. he reversed the executive orders of president trump that secure our border and initiated this mass illegal migration. the laws did not change, the enforcement changed. we need stronger laws that would prevent president from doing what biden did and were strengthening president. that is why we passed hr to. -- hr two. this is a question of enforcement and that can only be changed by changing the administration. host: charisma tom mcclintock, we appreciate your time. guest: a pleasure, thanks for having me. host: 30 minutes left before the house comes in. we will be joined by democratic

is taking biz tomorrow 10:00 a.m. eastern -- is taking place tomorrow 10 a.m. eastern, the court really -- the court ruling that donald trump could not appear on the ballot in colorado. we will be taking that up tomorrow morning to spend. you will be able to hear the oral arguments tomor because cameras are not allowed in the courtrooms yet. your expectations for how that will play out? guest: i truly don't know. i am trying to follow up with what we are doing in congress. as you can tell from last night, not very much. if i try to keep track of legal pieces of donald trump, i would have to have that is a full-time occupation. i cannot but i think the american people can figure this out, someone with this many troubles maybe isn't ready to come back to the white house. host: rissman mark pocan with us into the house comes back --
8:37 am
congressman mark pocan with us into the house comes back. you can phone in until then. democrats, 202-748-8000. republicans, 202-748-8001. independents, 202-748-8002. we will start on the line for democrats, brandy and indiana -- randy in indiana. thank you for joining us. caller: i don't believe what is going on with these folks. i have no faith whatsoever. i agree with the last gentleman that was on in most parts he was talking about. it is like the elite in congress. they are not going to do anything about the border. that is the first thing they had to do, shut that border down. we have to send the people back where they came from and admonish them to go to the nearest embassy they can get to and make the application to come into this country legally.
8:38 am
if they come in illegally, no questions asked. turn them from where they came from. tell them to quit coming. they are traveling thousands of miles with their kids. they are sending their kids across the border with notes, telephone numbers. it is baloney. i have no faith in our countries -- in our congress. guest: when donald trump was president you had a republican majority in the house and in the senate. he did nothing about the border. this is a political issue that people have used instead of solve. when joe biden has asked for resources so he can process people quicker at the border so they can be returned, congress won't give him money. they want this to be a lingering problem going into november and it is congress's obligation to change the laws.
8:39 am
chip roy from texas on the floor saying millions of people came across the border when donald trump was president. this has happened under democrats and republicans. we need to do this in a bipartisan way. the senate attempted to. we will have to wait until november. host: from geneva, wisconsin. this is john. caller: good morning. the democrats were not charged the first years of this administration. that must not have been important to you whenever you had control of the house and the senate. i would encourage everyone to google whitewater wisconsin and look up any illegal minor being sex trafficked. these democrats contributed to
8:40 am
the indentured servitude of these illegals -- these migrants who had to pair coyotes -- who had to pay cody's -- pay coyotes. what are you going to do about that? guest: first up, i do agree that the rules in the senate, unit 60 votes and they did not have 60 votes. -- you need to 60 votes and they did not have safety votes. i came to congress in 2016 and there were 60 votes for a compromise that john boehner refused to take up in the house. we were busy during those two years doing a lot of things. one, getting us out of covid. two, investing in our infrastructure, roads and bridges. three, we were getting manufacturing here like computer chips and things that create jobs. four, we were reducing the cost
8:41 am
of health care and prescription costs, fighting with companies on drug prices. we got a lot done in those two years. you cannot point to the trump administration and talk about the africa package they had. they talked and they did not deliver. we delivered. host: this is jeff, republican in nebraska. good morning. caller: i call in to say it is easy for you to sit on the tv and lie when you're sitting in fake news network. the southern border has been broken and you did not do anything to fix the problem because you want the problem. the bill in the senate to fix the problem is a complete lie and you know it. thanks. guest: you are so wrong in so many ways. the border has been wrong for decades and people know that. even republican representatives said millions people came
8:42 am
through every year during the trump administration. we have some real issues. i went down to el paso and watched the processing of people and we are not funny people to do it. they, profits are doing this. that is not the intention. we have to do something different but we are not. the president cannot do this alone. it is congress's responsibility which we did not do in 2013 when the bipartisan proposal came over with 68 votes. yes, the republican majority did not take it up -- yet, the republican majority did not take it up. we know we need to do things differently down there but to say it happened the last three years as you have a channel changer who only goes to one or two channels. i recommend hitting the up and down button. host: what is an aunf? guest: it is any authorization
8:43 am
to go to work which is congress's response ability. host: why do you think what is needed now? guest: a president has to notify congress but is up to congress to authorize that. the question is are we at the situation where we are going to war or not? the question has been looking at the middle east. our concern is it appears to be a widening conflict outside of gaza and many of us who warned that -- many of us warned that early on. part of a reason why i think it blake check to netanyahu -- a blank check to nanda who's administration -- netanyahu's administration is the chance of young americans being called there. that is why we have the authorization according to the constitution and i want to be using it sparingly when it is in the u.s. interest. host: james, democrat. good morning. caller: i would like to ask a
8:44 am
couple of questions about the bill on migration. senator murphy himself said the border never causes -- never closes. i would like to ask you to explain why a bill prevents the federal government from using the limitation be put on it of 1400 for only 270 days in the first year, 220 five days in the second year and 180 days in the third year? that is almost half of a year of unfettered open immigration. another thing, the federal government, there are 900 drugs that increase the price for big pharma, they are funding the arcadia institute and care, plus catholic charities to go below the border, tell everybody have to come in and when they get in
8:45 am
here, they pay them again to support them. i am a democrat. i have been a democrat my whole life and i'm getting tired of the people who voted against the horrors of socialism condemnation like mr. mark pocan did. you don't talk about anybody else. i don't care about trap or anybody else, this administration is the biggest bunch of bums i have seen in my life. guest: he has been all over the place. i don't know what he means by big pharma funding the border. i can tell you this, one of the bills we passed was the efficient reduction act. we capped the price of insulin. we are negotiating for drug prices on the most popular drugs to lower the cost for americans. that is long overdue.
8:46 am
you did not see that happen in the trump administration and you did during the biden administration. there are so many measures like that. republicans want to turn back on the affordable care act. that is making sure tens of millions of americans have health care. i am not sure what the caller was saying because he was all over the place pretty well -- but when it comes to health care, this administration has done more and since we started the affordable health care act. host: what are your views of medicare advantage? guest: i could spend a half hour on that subject. medicare advantage is a private alternative. it cost more than medicare. they overbilled us $140 billion in the last year. that is enough to cover every person on medicare. they turned a dog people of cases.
8:47 am
-- they turned down people to many of the cases. they are turning down cases to save money and that cost people's lives. we do have a much deeper look at medicare advantage -- medicare advantage. you cannot call yourself the latest is postal service and floor delivery -- you cannot call yourself in the united states postal service and floral delivery. only medicare is medicare. host: you have a tweet yesterday directed at the postmaster general. can you explain? guest: it used to be the postal service worked really well. when mr. dejoy came aboard, we saw him dismantle processing centers. in wisconsin, there is only one place in the state that processes mail. if you arsenic something from one side of town together, it has to go to milwaukee and back.
8:48 am
we have people this winter that did not receive mail for five days. there are problems there and we need answers. i just wanted to get simple answers for my constituents. two, i serve on the appropriations committee that has oversight over the postal service. we needed postmaster general to come in and get some answers. it is not just my district, it is across the country. i don't think the postmaster general is doing the job necessary. we need to have subcategory. -- we need some accountability. host: about five minutes left with mark pocan. this is greg from texas, flower mound. independent. caller: i was a democrat answers become an independent -- and since become a dent -- an independent.
8:49 am
it is based on this border issue and this administration's handling on this border. and the messaging. they have been telling us the past three years there is not a border issue, there is not a crisis at the border. now we have a crisis at the border and we need new laws and more money and more spending to do this. like many of the other colors you called in before me -- callers who called in before me, i have hit a wall with this administration and their handling of the border. there is schizophrenia around it. it is time that the american people have some change here. quite frankly, this administration is failing us miserably doubt here in texas when it comes to the border issue.
8:50 am
the only way i can make that happen is to leave the party because the party has done a miserable job for the american people and cast my vote somewhere else . the party has become a one creek party -- a one trick pony and that is donald trump. all they can say is donald trump. it is sad that is all this party has to offer. host: conner smith? -- congressman? guest: even republican members of congress from texas have said this was a problem even during the trump administration. it has been a couple of decades congress is not done their job. i first session of congress, there was a bipartisan bill that had a pathway for citizenship that got 68 bipartisan votes and then john refused to take it up because at the time the tea
8:51 am
party did not want to take it up. this has been going on for a long time. this three years mind is nothing but a talking point. i went up to el paso with the person who reps in that area. she has a bipartisan plan she is trying to get through congress. if we got put the resources to process people properly, people are waiting sometimes seven years to get the proper processing to see if their to stay or not. that is ridiculous. when republicans refuse to give them money, you are going to have problems. it is ultimately congress's fix. presidents can do some band-aids here and there but it is up to congress to deal with something. the senate tried to come up with something at house republicans trended down. i understand people should be
8:52 am
frustrated. the frustration needs to go where it needs to go. to blame joe biden for this as if it just happened is something you clearly only get from some news networks talking points. host: you mentioned congresswoman escobar, what is her program? guest: she tried to do it the bipartisan way. . she represents an el paso, there are no resources for federal employees to process people so you have a local government taking this burden on and local nonprofits. we visited facilities, they are doing the best job they can but it is not their responsibility. it is the federal government's response ability and part of the reason the process takes so long and so broken. she would be a great person to come along with the other layperson on that bill. just a half hour of what she's talking about and it would be very enlightening. host: this is mark out of california, republican.
8:53 am
good morning. caller: good morning. i am a combat veteran, i have been a firefighter since 1999. i am embarrassed to be an american watching congress. congress is just corrupt, everyone of them. let's talk about the affordable care act. the affordable care act is terrible because as a professional firefighter if he is a ritual mandate went through, i would have been taxed an extra $800 per month. you guys are corrupt. you sold us out. i am understood to be an american. you should be ashamed of yourselves. host: congressman? guest: thank you for your service, i'm sorry you're embarrassed to be an american. act 20 many people have access to health care. it is not true you would have been taxed $800 a month.
8:54 am
watch some other networks, maybe comedy central would be a good recommendation to get some levity in your life. what is problem with people having access to health care? every industrialized country has universal health care. the closest we have is what we have. there have been improvements because of the affordable care act. why do you want to have a neighbor sick? is in the society's best interest to have health care. prescription drugs, why do we pay more than other countries? we are getting ripped off by big pharma. joe biden did that, he made sure we are negotiating for prescription drug prices. people need to broaden their media sources. you can get the same feet you will always get and you will get
8:55 am
no diversity. you have to spend time to get the extra information out there because there is plenty people see that benefit their families. to come out and say you are embarrassed to be an american actor serving your country is unfortunate. a broader perspective would provide a different perspective. host: programming for viewers in the minutes we have left, there are several things you can watch today on c-span. on c-span two, a hearing at 9:00 a.m. eastern on military living conditions. officials from the navy and air force and army will testify at the house armed services committee hearing at 9:00 a.m.. this evening at 10:00 p.m., c-span covering nikki haley's rally in nevada. you can watch on c-c-span now, at c-span.org.
8:56 am
wed about this a couple of s, tomorrow at 10:00 a.m., the sucourt hears oral arguments in the 14th amendment case involving donald trump. there are arguments here on c-span and c-span.org and the free c-span now video app. just a few minutes before the house comes in. we'll get more calls, congressman. this is ted in asheville, north carolina. caller: good morning and thank you for c-span. i love to learn so much from you. representative mark pocan, i appreciate you coming on. the witch hunts between hunter biden and the immigration problem being blamed on the democrats just continues. other than that, we don't seem to get anything done in washington.
8:57 am
one of the biggest issues i am concerned about is the national debt. i wish you elaborate on that. have a great day. guest: one of the things we have been talking about this week with congress is the trump tax cut proposal for the wealthiest where 83% of money went to the top 1%. a lot of that is coming up to be renewed and we have to make sure we don't do that because that added more to the deficit. when donald trump was president, he added more to the deficit than any other president in history. that is one thing we can do and we should do. i am glad joe biden did things like singing a text to every corporation. those corporations hiding hackers overseas to avoid paying taxes yet making profits here, you have a minimum tax now. that helped fund the initiative the president has done. more can be done in this area
8:58 am
and we're going to have to with the tax cuts donald trump did for the wealthiest. there is an opportunity to stop that. host: u.s. debt clock has the national debt up to $34 trillion and counting. this is jennifer in savannah, georgia. independent. good morning. caller: i don't understand why trump is telling his followers that are supposed to be representing people in the house to vote against that immigration bill because something is better than nothing. even if he gets elected, we are waiting almost another whole year. how is that making america great again? how is it he loves our country so much that he is willing to make every american on that border wait until he gets to be
8:59 am
president before it gets fixed? guest: that is the voice of common sense. i agree with everything she said. don't forget when donald trump was president not only did people still come across the border, but we know when the resident republican majority in the house and senate and donald trump was president, they did nothing about the border. they love to have fear as an inference at election time. you take this issue away, they don't have that fear factor. donald trump told him to stop. that is what is wrong with the current house majority. we cannot govern. 27 bills the entire last year is showing how pathetic it is. the last caller said everything in a reconnaissance weight --
9:00 am
and every commonsense way. host: mark pocan, democrat of wisconsin, we always appreciate your time. thank you for coming back to "washington journal." guest: thank you. host: that is what to do it for us. there are oral arguments in that 14th amendment case at game tomorrow -- and 10:00 a.m. tomorrow -- at 10:00 a.m. tomorrow. we noted take you live to the house floor for coverage -- we now take you live to the house floor for live coverage.
