th i think ultimately he found out that diminishing marginal return on every additional $1 million he put on tv. everybody already knew who he was and what he was about. and they didn't want to vote for him. elections are choices. once also brooks really spun up her operation and voters knew choice, they felt they would rather go with her. >> even though as you were sayingry mylh leans democratic, why do you think this could be competitive? >> because of hogan's popularity. we saw him win two elections. comparatively a landslide victory in 2018. in maryland, hogan was really able to appeal to independents and democrats in the state.

he i popular in some cases, maybe not now, but a year ago he probably as popular among democrats as republicans. he has significant sup among black voters which are traditionally democratic. he has very high numbers among independents brings a lot to the table. that makes it doesn't make him the favorite. very popular in their own states when they try and run for senate oftentimes aren't able to seal the deal. est virginia has -- joe manchin has announced his retirement. what are you looking at? >>his state is crucial to the senate map because it is by far republicans best pickup opportunity. the senate is split. 59 democrats, 41 republicans. if trump wins the presidel e reo flip one seat in theatr reclai.

nobody would ever be able to do it. but the pundits, you heard them from the beginning of this campaign were saying it would be pos to get on the ballot and we got on the ballot t if you can get on in texas, we can get ohe. taxes only gave us 45 days to collect 100 13,000 signatures. we got more than double that. and i was just upstairs talking to the, i was just mpignare and they said we are on the way to new york tonight because new york is the next one for10 days. we had 45 days. the hardest states are new york

what we have seen so far really significant support from the democratic establishment. mccormick with some of owmoney,. also with major from other wealthy people that havegn his behalf. super pac aside, casey currently has more on hand in his campaign about. mccormick has that to fall back on. are talking tens of millions of dollars as of the first quarter of this year. it's not very many donors, if this several dozen and most of them don't live in pennsylvania, a couple do. big school choice advocate. pennsylvania is one of those statesnate campaign committees are really focusing on.

noal money is on hand. those are some of the financial dynamics you are seeing. >> the primary race this year wasn't terribly exciting on either side. >> not really. field has been clearing out for these candidates. mcrmn inhe primary and lost pretty narrowly. as far as the gop establishment was concerned, they see him as somebody who would be able to mount od and casey, you would be facing tough to run against him in pennsylvania in the democratic primary. he has a very long history in the state, he is a scrantonosda. >> what has been the early

m the candidates? >> very different in terms of what they are focusing on. fighter member of the senate. he's not a really flaguhe does'. ■jhe has really stressed that he has a policy guide, he has been major bipartisan noncontroversial bills passing. one of his bags -- big focuses has been consume, allowing the ftc to penalize companies for price gouging. it is biden has talked about. you can see the relationship there, focusing on things voters are really going to feel good that are not going to be controversial. mccormick tied himself torump, he has said he supports trump and that has been hispproh.

immigration has been a huge thing for him. he talked a lot about the border, which has a for republicans. his big thing is don't touch the southern border. in onef ads, he was talking about palestinian immigrants. the white house had a proposal that would palestinians in egypt to immigrate to the u.s. if they had family here and that was something he kind of tied casey to the biden administration. another dynamic i would have to mentn mccormick has connecticut for many years. his career has taken him all over the place. more recently the ceo of bridgewater. he's a wealthy guy for many years did not live in pennlv thawas a huge issue for him and his last race for u.s. senate, it's going to be an issue again this year, it already is.

he has a bus tour around pennsylvania for the early part of the race. he goes back to connecticut a lot. he has two houses, one in pittsburgh. that is for sure a dynamic as well. >> you mention the bus tour he'sng aund pennsylvania. what other tactics are the campaigns using. >> lot of advertising. i mentioned the super pac that is supporting mccormick. i haven't even put a dent into th large amount of money they have on hand. casey has spent a little more money out of his own campaign account so far. same thing for him, sort of reintroducing himself to voters. casey's name recognition is higher so that the story is a big part of mccormick's strategy

. a big goal is toapart. usually people know the name casey in pennsylvania. democrats are going to be having a hard time. like inflation are going to be top of mind. that conr tion angle is something he's really focused on. >> pennsylvania has long large in the presidential race. what is the interaction between the senate race in the presidential race in pennsylvania this >> whatever happens at the top ofts down ballot. with casey and mccormick, they ar not trying to really divorce themselves from the candidate at the top of the ticket. in casey's case it would be really hard for him to do that.

he and biden have known each other for many years. i think so far in pennsylvania, we see a lot of ads. it's already starting. in the primary you mentioned it was quiet for thu. senate race, it was quiet for the presidential race at said. ere was the uncommitted movement did see some traction here. pennsylvania has a late primary. the fields wereled by the time it happened. we are still seeing everything kicked into motion here. the major action is still going to happen. >> katie meyer, thanso much f y >> one last stop o's 2024 campaign trail. in washington state, democratic attorney general bob ferguson considered a top contender in is year's gubernatorial race. partly because of his atide name recognition. two other bob ferguson's also
