landing a short time ago set to make remarks to those gathered, including antony blinken and lloyd austin. the president and members of congress also gathered for the 80th anniversary. they visited the normandy american cemetery and attended the omaha beach ceremonies, also met with living veterans who served in world war ii. again, the president is expected to begin his remarks shortly. one the u.s. to take a less active role when solving those problems. that is the 40% mark. overall all u.s. adults saying that the current role is about right. only 23% saying a more active role is necessary. breaking that down amongst parties, 25 percent of democrats saying a less active role with the 2% saying the current role is right.

23% saying a more active role is needed. among independents 43% saying a less active role is the role america should take dealing with the world's problem. 21% want a more active role. republicans is 53% of those registering thoughts this morning saying that america should take a less active role when it comes to dealing with the world's problems. 22% saying the current role is about right. about 24% say a more active role when it comes to dealing with the world's problems. that is from the associated press. it breaks down a couple of specifics. the president is set to meet with ukraine president this morning. that same poll asks about the specifics when it comes to the war between ukraine and russia. overall, 36 percent of votes says the united states should take a less active role and 46% say the current role is right. 22% say a more active role is needed when it comes to

openness, free press, fair elections. so, they want to be sort of like authoritarian countries, like russia and putin. host: to the ideals that you listed, do you think that america highlights those ideals and the rest of the world? caller: i have to say i think that western europe, europe, and the united states, canada, australia, new zealand, that is what i would call the western alliance. the western alliance is in retreat in the sense that the authoritarian countries in eastern europe are, how do you say -- expanding their power. the democracy is a bit in decline in is junior perhaps -- in eastern europe, perhaps.

we have to re-up our pro-democracy pro-liberal values and human rights and individual rights, etc. if not, we become a country like hungary or russia, you know? host: edward in michigan. joe in washington, d.c., america's role in the world. would you think it is? what do you think? caller: good morning. i don't think america should be the world police. they have all of these military installations all over the world spending billions and trillions of dollars and no other country has military installations around our country. so, why does america have to be the world police and everybody else's policy? i think that it's hypocritical. i think that america is a

hypocrisy. i think that america should mind their own business. we are spending our government taxes all over the world helping other countries without helping america. host: joe in washington, d.c. let's hear from ronald in baltimore, maryland on the independent line on america's role in the world. hello. caller: how are you doing, sir? host: you are up. go ahead. caller: if you're talking about america's role in the world, it seems to be a discrepancy. that is a misnomer. you have america and then you also have the usa corporations, which a lot of people may not understand what i'm talking about. this so-called government, the

usa corporations are different, separate. as for the role, no matter how you look at it, the role has pretty much been at this point in time creating chaos. i don't see anything good coming out of too much political orders. anytime they political parties out there right now -- host: when you say america's role is to greet chaos and confusion, give me a specific. caller: everything. russia, israel, africa, anywhere the usa corporations goes to. they are not doing nothing to help anybody, not really. they may have a facade for people that is not in the know. they can look like they are trying to help or police other countries and societies and that

particularly after meeting veterans that you are seeing. a speech taking a look at america's place, particularly when it comes to defending democracy and freedom. here's a portion of pres. biden: together we won the war. we rebuilt europe, including our former enemies. it was an investment that became shared, and a prosperous future. we established nato, the greatest military alliance in the history of the world. and over time -- you got it, it is. [applause] over time we brought more nations into nato, the nato alliance, including the newest members, finland and sweden. [applause] today nato stands at 22 countries strong, and nato is

more united than ever. and even more prepared to keep the peace, deter aggression, defend freedom, all around the world. america has invested in our alliances and forged new ones. not simply out of altruism, but our own self-interest as well. america has a unique ability to bring countries together. it is an undeniable source of our strength and power. isolationism was not the answer 80 years ago, and it is not the answer today. [applause] we know the dark forces that these heroes fought against 10 years ago. they never faded. aggression and greed. the desire to dominate and control. to change borders by force. these are perennial.

james. as far as america's role in the world, what do you think it is? caller: i think the democrats want to be the dictator of the world some time, especially the democrats, if you don't vote democrat they want to lock you up. chuck schumer and some of them others must think the american people are stupid. gary. caller: thank you for taking my call. first of all, i want to say a heartfelt thank you to our veterans for making the sacrifices they made to defend our democracy. my dad was a veteran, so i know what it is like. secondly, i don't know if you have a clip of the hearing from wednesday that representative ivey made when it came to donald trump, as far as him getting away with what he is getting away with, trying to subvert our

democracy. host: gary, i know we talk a lot about these issues, but america's role in the world specifically since you called on that, what do you think it is? caller: to defend our democracy and stop these countries from trying to take over the world. we definitely need to do that. host: why do you think that is important? caller: because no country should ever, ever, ever try to ruin our democracy. you know, our veterans fought for democracy and fought for our freedom in all of the wars that were fought in, that america fought in, so how democracy and our freedoms need to be defended. host: gary there, joining us from new hampshire on this question of america's role in the world and what you think the role it should take. you have heard several thoughts. you saw that poll from the associated press as well. the folks from pew did a poll

and asked people from other countries. one of the questions is, is the united states contribute into peace in the world, those in other countries saying that, for example, canada, 60% saying that the united states contributes to peace and stability. 39% saying it does not. amongst a list of pump -- list of countries, pulling coming at the top, saying america contributes to peace and stability. that goes steadily down. low on the list, hungry, with more people they are saying that america is not contribute into peace and stability. 63% versus 44% saying that america contributes to peace and stability. there are other countries listed there as well. if you are interested in that poll about america's place in the world, getting yours as well. ed in pennsylvania, independent

line. go ahead. caller: i think this war in ukraine was provoked. the russians were provoked. it is the expansion of nato which provoked this conflagration in ukraine. we have to look at the landholdings in ukraine which are being owned, controlled by cargo, by dupont. i think this is something the american people need to look into. the american people need to turn the tv off. thank you. host: before you go, how did you come to think that way, and when it comes specifically to ukraine, what is the proper role america should take? caller: first of all, i think that the expansion of nato, which has caused so much trouble . in the 1990's gorbachev was assured that nato was not going

to be expanding. that is why he allowed the reunification of germany. during the clinton and also the bush administration nato has been expanding. they are trying to surround the russians. and because of that, russia, china, and now take a look at 2013 when victoria nuland went over into kyiv and insisted, or encouraged, the overthrow of janne cove which in 2014. the american people have to start reading. turn off the tv. host: gisele in ohio. republican line. go ahead. caller: yes, our government, our deep state has ripped this world to pieces. it has created chaos and havoc in every country we meddle into. we have even meddled into our

country. the george floyd thing was nothing more than a color revolution in america, destroying our democracy. our country is so evil. america is the evil empire. host: as far as other countries in the world, where has america been a destabilizing force? give us an example. caller: the middle east. they destabilize the middle east. they destabilized europe. look at ukraine and russia. like the previous caller said, we caused this conflict between russia and the ukraine, because we wanted to overthrow putin. and that is how we did it, is by creating this war. we created havoc in iraq. in iraq we went into a war, we lied about it. and now we lie about what is going on in israel. about what is going on in iran. america wants war and chaos everywhere.

they are destabilizing the world. we should stop we are doing. host: estelle in ohio. the wall street journal highlighting the president's trip overseas. they add this, saying that transatlantic relations are at an inflection point. mr. biden is at odds with european leaders over his continued support for israel, and after two years of grinding combat in ukraine the u.s. and europe are still scrambling to increase weapons deliveries to kyiv to counter russia. the rise in china as a military power is driving a years-long pivot of u.s. forces for the pacific and away from europe and the middle east. presumptive republican presidential nominee donald trump has cast doubt over america's commitment to european allies. ♪
