the the, this is dw news line from berlin, super tuesday, motors make a re match between donald trump and president joe biden seem inevitable. as trump celebrates his suite of nearly all states that have been called one northeastern state gifts, his loan republican challenger, nikki haley. the not also coming up for china, some words could lead to action. our correspondent visits a taiwanese island in sight of the chinese mainland, where a recent deadly incident and facing steps of patrols have put the local pushing. cruise on alarm, and tests of european assembly plant near berlin. compliance to a fault because of a suspected arson attack on

a nearby power line. a left wing militant group says that he was behind the incident the sarah kelly. welcome to the program. we begin in the united states where super tuesday has almost certainly confirmed that this year's presidential race will be a re match between donald trump and joe biden. both were swept to a string of his sounding victories as republican and democratic voters in 16 states from alaska to alabama, had their chance to choose their preferred candidate. the only 2 serious contenders remain with biden effectively unopposed, among the democrats. and on the republican side, from one, every state except for mont, former south carolina governor nikki haley, one there but failed, and several other states where she was seen as having
9:02 am
a real chance to disrupt the trump campaign. she will now face even greater pressure to drop out of the race. republican presidential hopeful donald trump held what he called an amazing night victory's. have a listen. thank you very much. the call is super tuesday for a reason and they tell me the pundits and otherwise if there's ever been one like this has never been anything so conclusive. this was an amazing, an amazing night and amazing day. it's been an incredible period of time and our country's history has been sad and so many ways. but i think it's going to be inspiring because we're going to do something. but frankly, nobody's been able to do for a long time. and before we dive deeper, let's have a listen to some of the voters who cast their ballots on tuesday, across the u. s. or, actually, i don't, i can't say, and trump. and so it wasn't
9:03 am
a big problem for me to come over here and vote. i voted for vitamin as i did the last time because i supported him. well, i bought it for donald trump and i did last time also because we really need a business man to get this world straight. transfers is a very horse and individual buddies, the least he knows how to run the country. republican donald trump. eh, because i think he's the best hope we have for getting our country back on track. anybody. but i didn't really why is that? he's, he doesn't need the big our presence to get these to. oh, he forgets things i wrote in from our current president fighting and mostly voting for him because i'm concerned about the state of our democracy. if trump is re elected, i think he would be less likely to start a new and with trump dominating super tuesday is the fight for the republican
9:04 am
nomination basically over now, i put that question to dw reporter william blue croft. oh sarah, you and i are here just, i think, you know, less than 24 hours ago discussing that very question the, the, the writings but on the proverbial wall for quite a while now. but now we're really coming seeing the results. let's not forget or be distracted by all the performative aspects of the primary season that it's fired. primaries are a mathematical game. 1215 delegates is what the, the republican candidate needs to become the nominate. that's what of donald trump and nikki haley and previously and still some other smaller candidates are fighting for. but because of the math game, donald trump is way out ahead. and although he didn't clinch that tonight, he is very much on track to clenching that. and again, barring something unforeseen, nikki haley just won't have the numbers to be able to take down donald trump. so
9:05 am
what happens is she drop out now? well, nikki haley has been, or her campaigns are very silent, are mostly silent. after super tuesday they just put out of statements, she didn't have any kind of public appearance. just the statements, thinking the millions of americans who did vote for her. and of course, pointing out the vermont when nikki haley is basically pitched to the republican party is you can get rid of me, i can lose, i can drop out and she may very well, we don't know yet, but that does not put that does not put to bed the disquiet, among many republicans who just don't want to vote for donald trump again. and that could be vulnerable going into november. and when we look on the democratic side, as expected, president joe biden has also had a strong showing. but i mean, you're, you were mentioning kind of warning signs about the general election. there wasn't warning signs. might there have been on the democratic side? all right, joe biden, stacy, similar issues as donald trump. people just aren't that enthusiast. think about either. i mean,
9:06 am
we're seeing massive people coming out for both of them because that's how america work. you have kind of to be candidates and voters of various of the 2 parties vote for them. but do you mean i'd say it's, as we've seen over the last many election cycles, it doesn't really matter about how popular you, you are. it's more important about how slightly unpopular you are. those views 1000 votes in certain key counties. a certain key states is what really decides elections. it doesn't really matter of about the 10s of millions of americans. you might get voting for you. it matters the 10000 or 20000 pieces that might not work for you. and both joe biden and donald trump faced that risk going into november, and that is where the selection light previous elections is probably going to be decided on. the polls have shown a majority of americans don't really want either by dint or trump, again, as you've highlighted there. so i mean, what does this mean now, as we head towards november steel?
9:07 am
for every story i see or hear about a trump supporters who now isn't a trump supporter. i see another story about a bite in supporter who now isn't a bite and supporter. and both of those stories are true, right? both the campaigns can spin that any way they want. you can look at that positively saying, well, look at the other side. there's no with these guys. when they have a side, people are willing to vote for me because they, they want to stop the other side, both sides of the trump campaign, the binding campaign to use the same rhetoric, the same, talking points to make their case, and vice versa. supposed to be very interesting, as we do go into the full general election and towards november, which of those narratives. and they're all true narrative. i don't want to say that one is more true than the other. it's going to be, which is, which turns out to be the one that breaks in cruise favor. like i said, it's going to come down to the margins because that is how us politics currently structured. william blue crossed as always, thank you. and with another set of trump primary victories, the likelihood of
9:08 am
a 2nd, donald trump presidency looms large, that's made european leaders nervous and vigilant. the possibility of a return to an american 1st policy in washington and even the lack of support for nato has forced officials on the continent to prep for a future without their most powerful ally when he was previously president of the united states. donalds, trump describe the european union as a full and threatens to make you a p and pay for us protects. now his america 1st policy could once again, we shape transatlantic relations. for many european politicians, the possibility of donald trump's return to the white house is a nightmare scenario. even though they don't like to speak about it in front of a camera, surely. and you're not inviting me to interfere and the internal affairs of a biggest ally. it's um the people in, in america who, who had the right to choose the president in private. however,
9:09 am
one diplomats describe the apple sphere to us as a mixture of desperation and resignation. and it seems pretty clear that's behind closed doors. officials in your opinion, kept a post a working on contingency plans. should there be a 2nd donald trump presidency? i'm sure that there are contingency plans. i'm not going to wait until the last moment. the advantage that they have is some trump is not anymore, unlike what was the case in 2000, 162017. is not an unknown person anymore of the present during his 1st term and office trump impose terence on trade with you members. he pulled out of the paris climate agreements and then what was the biggest shock he repeatedly question? do you ask commitments to the nato alliance now he's delivering the same messages on the complain trail. one of the presidents of a big countries stood up said, well sir, uh if we don't pay and were attacked by russia, will you protect us?
9:10 am
i said, no, i would not protect you. in fact, i would encourage them to do whatever the hell they want. you got to say, so kudos to can trump presidency, mean the end of nato. it's not just about whether the united states is in or out. i mean, almost certainly the united states would stay in, but there are, there are levels of being in and the other allies on occasion have, have salt, lower levels of involvement with nato, withdrawing from the integrated military command, for example. or simply is simply focusing on areas outside of the european security orbit, which would leave europe in a position of having to sort of somehow fill that gap. could you fill that gap? not into short term experts say, nate to without us. would it be weak? europe's nuclear deterrence, without america, nuclear weapons, inconceivable, at least for now and supporting ukraine without money and arms from washington
9:11 am
would be much more difficult. so what can even leaders do? no matter what will happen in us? and europe has to be able to do more on our own and in cooperation with our allies . this is a wake of code for, for everybody in europe to do more for, for european own defense, doing more for you or p and secuity you could help. but it will take time for countries to be able to do that, and you are p and the union army 1st discussed decades ago is still a distant endeavor. and in the meantime, if one looks at the experience of the trumpet ministration that we had. clearly he views the world, not just through nation states, but through individual leaderships, individual leaders. i can say not so much alliances, not so much agreements, sometimes not even states but, but individuals. and so those individual relationships matter. building relationships, stepping up on defense, europeans bracing foot from $2.00. and they know that a new face and
9:12 am
a transatlantic relationship might be looming anyway, regardless of who will win the race to the white house. and we've got more on how you are paying leaders are looking at these elections, is it hope for the best prepare for the worst? we put that to brussels bureau chief, alexandra phenomena who you saw there in that report as well. so i think that describes the best, the move in most european capital, most with only few exemptions. we are here on the assignment in poland and the depaula is president under the due date when he was asked about donald trump's claim, he, if we elect it could add to the war in ukraine in just 24 hours. he said, well, don't know, trump always has always kept his words to me. uh so uh that was quite a sense statement, but he, it, but he's prime and it was much more critical as our most your p and leaders who are watching very closely what is happening in the u. s. are hoping for
9:13 am
a 2nd fight and presidency because they know that's jo bite and really values that front of lansing relationship. but they also, they are also witching out to people is could be on the potential donuts trump, teen, should she be elected again? because of course, they want to learn what is contained talk, and what would be then we'll policy or we or policy. what possible effect could be outcome of the election have on europe a well, it just depends what are you are an optimist or past the most according to one think think under donald trump view as with a band on climate action, trade wars would hard and, and need to would be at the best a dormant, and i think this is the biggest problem that the u. a p. as a worry about that donald trump, if we elect to which pull out, or at least we can need to. and this is of course,
9:14 am
the quickbook key questions for the question for the you a p. and because it's about there are security. and there are different scenarios. and that you opinions are really worried that the return of america 1st policy codes mean europe, on its own as the about belgium prime minister, the crop put, it's talking to his lawmakers. what are the steps that the you could take now to enhance and protect their own position in the world? well, i think that's the europeans or no talking a lot about what they can do that they need to do more for the own defense of some of the european allies, members of nato, a have already increased the defense spending yesterday that you were p and commission announced a new of an initiative for europe in defense industrial strategy. so they wants to invest more money to produce more weapons. but all of that of course,
9:15 am
needs time. and as for now, i would say that you opinions are very carefully watching what is happening in dw use alexandra phenomena joining us. thank you so much. all these have to be appreciate it. i as well elsewhere in the world. the united states has further toughened it stands on the dire conditions in the gaza strip, according to news agencies. israel sanchez ally is for the 1st time back and calls for an immediate cease fire and a un security council resolution the draft. the language also calls for the release of all hostages, still held by him off. the shift comes as the us and jordan have air dropped more a packages into the post and in territory. but agencies say that the drops provide just a fraction of what is needed to panic and k. o. as mentioned garza city, run around in a frenzy to find food countries such as egypt,
9:16 am
jordan fronts. and now the us have been dropping aid from above. but there are too many people in need and there's not enough aid and the we have the willing, this inability to bear it. but is there a father in the world who can see his children riding in hunger in front of him to remain silent? even if the price is risking his life, just like all these people who risk their lives in order to obtain what is not even enough for a crumb of flour or 8 or canned food. yesterday, some expired canned goods arrived containing mold and fungus. we are not animals, as they described us over the weekend workers from the u. n. m, the w h o rushed in to provide supplies to hospitals, medicines and fuel

a running critically no. and this is costing children headlines so unfortunately, yes, we have lost 2 babies here. they had pneumonia, but they died because of the power cut. the power went off at 4 am, and at 8 am we were out of oxygen. the one that of many others have died from hunger, according to the visiting team from the w, and show that there is no milk or anything. well, the situation is bad, indescribable. we're not able to get them anything. these deaths come as the booming outside continues and bodies, philip floors somewhat so young, they barely have the chance to live the national people's congress in china is being closely followed in taipei tension between china and taiwan. has

spiked in recent weeks due to a recent incident which took place in the water surrounding 10 men. a group of time when use control the islands just kilometers from the shores of china. and the incident a tie, one east coast guard pursuit of a chinese fishing vessel lead to the death of 2 chinese fishermen. china's coast guard has increased patrols around jenman time when he is official say that it is raising the risk of an accident spiraling into conflict. a correspond to james tater reports of the, from the beach is as high ones. doman items chinese skyscrapers a well with the nice side to man typically will use to the content home can seeing has long walks to narrow stretches of which is separating the 2 sides. but since 2 chinese fishermen died in a recent incident with tie one's coast guards, he's been much more crowded when heading out to see the table window is full. we used to go over there, but we can't anymore it because the chinese coast guard is the trolling an oven. we
9:19 am
used to come across them quite often and there wasn't a problem. and now we just do our best not to go there. we go to you since a deadly come sizing videos on chinese social media, show the coast guard pressing ahead with more patrols around seeing that sometimes even using the hockey language coming be spoken in taiwan typeface of several chinese vessels, events that prohibited horses during those patrol badging, which claims silver and c over taiwan says such restrictions don't exist. it's not the funds of mental disagreements which is raised fees, a spot to could ignite. why the conflict hygiene being here? you appreciate just how small the margin for error is. this land behind us is the chinese city of charlotte with millions of residents, the y best. so in the distance over the, if the chinese coast guard on this line right here is controlled by taiwan. now
9:20 am
with china sending more co, scott patrols into these voices, type pay faces a dilemma. do nothing. can they risk china replying, even more pressure, their react to strongly. and that's the risk of escalation of this is comic key political moments to both of aging and taipei. taiwan go soon integrated, some new presidents, a man who badging openly dislikes and in china. this week is the national people's congress. the, the country's leaders hike the defense budget by more than 70 percent and issued tough words on what they call re unifying taiwan with china by military force if necessary. jenman. so where is this call is the value of conflict with china, which continue to show the group of islands well into the 19 seventy's. local counselor don't send bile says that may explain residents muted response to more frequent chinese patrols. but he's quick to add, the fundamental tension still exists. now it just looks different. it's something that you can type with. well, can be more than just
9:21 am
a horrible. so it's not just about rock, it's guns and arms. you can tell there's diplomatic was trade was cold, was wanting to headphones. that kind of situation does exist to you. but it's just that every day people's perception of water is still tied to things like tenants as well. so they aren't as deeply impacted by the recent events. escalation has been avoided for now, but with ships from both sides, continuing to walk insults close proximity here. it's likely differential stalemate across these voices will soon be tested again. james taylor who you saw there, told me a little bit more about what people living on the islands of jenman make of the rising tension as well. like there's always a bit of additional situations like this because of course, people who live on gym and are pretty used to these types of tiny threats. as i mentioned and not reports. some people who live on gym and have lived experience. all of i'm of hall conflicts with china and so it is
9:22 am
a bit more difficult for these incidents which kind of operate below the threshold . a full so really come through with some people. but that being said, of course, officials, i'm locals, engine men recognize that they want this, these to these types of situations to be, to be managed carefully. they recognize that the risk of the thing is, conspire allowance of control. but at the same time, they also recognize that these people have to go on uh they can't live that lives really in a perpetual state of fear and crisis. and when you're kind of going to these places and reporting on these types of tensions between taiwan and china, or it's those 2 realities, you kind of have to hold a single thing is, can you mind one of the announcements to come out of time as national people's congress is a continuing rise in china's defense spending. how do taiwan and other asian countries perceive this rapid growth in china's military power? a stairwell live? what, what a, what a big increase. 7.2 percent this year. so far of stripping the overall targeted
9:23 am
growth. so the overall economy, which is really a testament to the importance of china is going to continue to play some of the tree expansion, despite troubles with its economy. of course in taiwan, we're in this intervening period now while we're waiting for the new president to be no grace and presidents about it presents a light slicing to who has suggested that he's going to continue in, in the vein of his pre, to assess a minute treaty conscription, compulsory military conscription inside one ass now up to one year. they boost replacing reco defense budgets. but of course, if there's something that's happening across the region, when you look at your time, which is also posted reco, defense budgets and in other kind of us allies. for example, the philippines, developing ties with washington. little bits of recognition really that the situation across the region is becoming more precarious. and governments responding and tongue with these types of defense budgets. it's not just taiwan that has disputes with china over maritime sovereignty. how was trying to pursue and gets territorial? see claims with other neighbors in asian countries or deal
9:24 am
with the cost, the big one that's everyone everyone's looking at. but in the last couple of days has been the very real tensions with the philippines. and some people are probably all you. this is even more concerning situation given that many layers and us treaty ally hasn't mutual funds, tracy with washington res, seem china. chinese coast guard firing was the kind of that some philippine vessel . some breaking belongs to philippine coast called ships injuring, assess, and people. but again, this is positive approach to strategy that china has been developing of the past couple of years without trying to build them. we must get a coast guard with some of these coast called vessels. um, you know, with, with the facilities and the capabilities, they look closer and closer to the ministry vessel would look like. and so, you know, again, just a testament really to the direction of travel here in the, in the pacific. and where are these maritime tensions, especially with a china that's more sensitive in, in pursuing its claims in these waters in the south trying to see what it was

around taiwan. and that's again, causing these governments to respond in time. james taylor correspondent in taipei, thank you. the test was european car plants near berlin has halted production after a suspected arson attack cut off its electricity supply. local media published a letter from a far right group, claiming a was behind the incident. police funds near the desk left land just outside the german capital berlin. a fire broke out or to high voltage electricity violent, which led to a power failure. authorities believe it was an act of sabotage. and that under today, criminal police are investigating on suspicion of ours and co investigating all of these. and then i leased a far left 1000000 group has claimed responsibility and the message posted online. the power outage force test allowed to hold its production and evacuate workers feelings associated with me for us. this really is an attack on this industrial

side here in find the book. and we have other 12000 employees who can't work at the moment. this incident comes as the electric car maker is facing protests against its expansion plans at the blonde environmental activists are occupying a nearby forest, putting up dense and building tree houses as part of the stop dessler movement. the viper that's we've occupied this forest because tesla, which is building electric cars here and it's big a factory for us to also wants to buy unclear this area of forest on ton of these devices. it wouldn't awesome. we've occupied the forest. just stop this. the environmental activists have issued a statement distancing themselves from the suspected arson attack. tesla says production boom, presume before next week, and it expects the losses to run to several 100000000 euros. and with that now
