5:01 pm
mariana evans dean is good to have you with us. millions of voters and 21 european union countries have been going to the polls on the last day of elections for the next europe in parliament. so called super sunday. and it predictions are accurate right? wing parties are going to make major gains. the outcome will shape the policies of the you for the next 5 years on issues from migrations to climate change, as well as a security cooperation. a total of $720.00 seats are up for grabs and the final results are expected. monday. we have correspondence on the ground and several countries including italy, germany and poland. and they break down the main issues for us. here in italy, the european elections, i mostly about one government, georgia, maloney, the jelly and prime minister and leader of the ripening populace. pod you for the 30, the tide. yeah. isn't the top of the back let's because she's also the lead candidate
5:02 pm
. also a party vote for georgia that says logan. she has no intention actually to take a seat into your be in parliament. she wants to remain as a prime minister in italy. but after the election, writing pauses in your should form a new strong group in parliament to form a new coalition, maybe also with parts of secretion, democrats. that's the aid of georgia and your largest economy here. and how many voters i'm most concerned about securing peace in the face of boxes full on ukraine, shift to the right counselors, sutton, the scene games for the fall, right? alternative photometry, despite it's tyna and ross of scandals. but polls also predict a referendum on the government of social democrats on flat off souls. and that's not looking flattering. instead of political come back for you, commission president will. so the funder lions home policy, the conservative cd you see, who is widely expected here in germany,
5:03 pm
him and putting these european parliament selection is really a bustle between the sense arrived on the hard rights. and both of these political parties have been polling neck and that all the way up until election day for the pose i've been speaking to hearing more. so they say this is really a test of the prime minister. don't know task a for me. you were being kind of so president himself, i'm all he's managed to do since october, when his civic platform managed to overturn a use of role by the law and justice policy to hard rights. we had consistent back tools with the european union institutions in brussels. people here in hungary care about jobs, the care about the economy, and about a functioning public health care system. it is about domestic issues that matter to home gear in the mills. what problem is the victim obama has focused his entire campaign on one issue, and that is the worst in neighboring ukraine. the ukraine is just about 250 commissioners from budapest. very much care, but what's happening in ukraine,
5:04 pm
but it's not the number one issue to them. it is both european local election here and hungry today. and it seems like it is turning into a referendum over the question of popularity of fixed o bonds. just hop pups you that really is he according to polls, he's going to get at least hall of the 20 was seats. awful graphs were hungry and the opium problem and but there's the question. what about the new come are about the political new come, or peter mod york was forced to get at least 6 feet. and what about the police to go left? what is left for them here in hungry? that's a really interesting vote here in poland because of a couple of reasons. first of the back in october, the civic platform of the prime minister don't know, task mentors to august use of the hard right law and justice policy in poland. on this european elections is actually seen as a sort of test to sort a barometer on how well don't know task and his government has been doing the pose in the run up to this day this election day have said that basically the injustice
5:05 pm
and the civic platforms of the sensor less than the hard, let's pretty much equal into pose 31 percent of the votes. we expect the pose voting for 53 of the european parliament is 25720 c's. and i don't know, task is painting the selection as you must vote for us. otherwise you are allowing russian influence into powerless politics. here the other side ers loves to kazinsky i who is the time of the law and justice policy. he's saying that don't know, task is a stooge of the european union, a puppets of brussels. it is really about the sort of polish opinions on those 2 policies. and those 2 men, rather than perhaps necessarily the issues that are on voters minds, which we know from studies say that it is things like security. there's also a big issue with the border at the moment that's being a search and migraines crossing from batteries like we have seen the battle
5:06 pm
russians pushing migrants across the border over the last few years. both just have a little my minds. but as i say, this divided country between these 2 sides, they will see who takes the most photos when we get those results. later on sunday and monday morning jack, thank you for that. check parents on the ground for us in warsaw. we appreciated the european elections are taking place against a backdrop of rise in political violence. authorities have tightened security in several countries following a string of attacks on europe and leaders and candidates. europe is struggling with political violence, just people that you think this incident was an attempt to assassinate. lucky as prime minister last month in copenhagen just 2 days before the european election, a man attacked the danish prime minister on the street. and in germany,
5:07 pm
several politicians have been assaulted recently. is that much to this d. w for to chose a member of the greens being harassed and dressed and in may and the social democrats, top candidate and sex any was badly beaten as he hung post is in the same city a few days earlier. the attacks on politicians and campaigners have prompted leaders to express serious concern about the state of democracy in the european union. so that's fast take place the we have been receiving almost daily news of physical attacks on elected officials and politically active people. and i must confess, that i am deeply concerned about the brutalization of political behavior in a country to put it as no one bends falling on me might still be on. we must never become accustomed to violence in the political battle of opinions on the country.
5:08 pm
we must outdoor it with the utmost determination. the political experts for the far right sage and the european parliament would add fuel to the tents political atmosphere of recent months. i'm joined now by kimberly macarthur from the a political foundation which is a non profit working to improve political leadership, democratic innovation, and also mental well being and politics. kimberly, thanks so much for joining us. it seems like politicians at all levels and around the world are more at risk of physical harm. why do you think that is? um yes, thank you. maryland. thank you for for having me. so yes, um, unfortunately we are seeing a trends um, not just here in germany or in europe of increased political violence. i'm certainly here in germany where we operate, violets has doubled in the last 5 years. and it does say it's affecting pulsations
5:09 pm
across the political spectrum. so it, it seems that that no one is safe and the what might be driving this at the moment in europe and around the world are obviously many elections. so as part of this increase might be because of it being a super election year and politics and politicians are essentially much more in, in the line life in more front sensor and public discourse in the media and in social media as well. but even try to, to this election. yeah, we sold this up, tip is increased as i said ends. there's a lot of research and evidence or brown's impacted affective polarization. really driving in violence and harassment of politicians. and this is where people increasingly see those with different political attitudes as the enemy or someone who has a different political view is simply seen as a bad person and, and very much a someone that, that needs to be taken out of,
5:10 pm
of the public realm. and one thing i have to say that we continually see in here in our, of is that the expectations of the public of what the political leaders do, what the jump saw are actually really difference to watch, publications, jobs involved. and so this divergence and expectations is driving lower levels of trust, low levels of confidence, and that is having an impact as well, where citizens believed that politicians should be doing something that they are not. and that supposes anger and just intense. and then i have some mention, of course, the role of social media and social media and technology is, is not the driver all of these problems, but it is certainly and for finance and ends. social media provides domestic strain, device, sensational messages, and much wider platform than they normally would have. and what kind of impact do
5:11 pm
you think this increase in violence? as you say, it's driven maybe by false expectations, you know, spreading hateful messages on social media. but we are seeing an impact shortly on political activity in democratic societies. what do you observe as we've seen this and in many places that do you have this danger of, of democratic silence. see essentially where politicians campaign is don't wish to host public consultations or they're not interacting as much with citizens because of the or of physical violence. or we have politicians potentially changing how they might. first impala me, it's because of fear of reprisals. and this is something that we've had on, it's totally from the, from political leaders in the u. k. and, and several of the countries. and that, that sort of fear goes beyond themselves as individuals, but also to their friends and their families as well. and a lot of the work we do is about encouraging more people to go into a political office. but what we're seeing is this file instead of really stopped
5:12 pm
message to those people considering going to politics. especially if you're a woman or persons from another group, just under represented in, in political power, who often stuff of more of this violence. many people really question whether going into office is really worth it if it's worth the threats and the violence against themselves. and the family and not really just narrow, is that the diversity of voices that we have in our politics. and then as democracies, you mention these threats of violence. i mean, that must put an enormous mental strain on individuals thinking about going into politics. and i know that your organization focuses on mental well being in politics and this topic perhaps is not being discussed as much as it should be. um, can you tell us about about that? thank you. yes. as you said it's, it's usually stigmatized topic to talk about mrs. wellbeing and the political context, and especially in instead of
5:13 pm
a phrase around the world. but we did some research last year that found that a 41 percent of the publications that we serve a low, a very low mentor will be. and so that's comparable to emergency services workers, uh, or health professionals during the course of attends and making certain places and violence. and the threat of violence was listed by people that we spoke with and surveyed as one of the main reasons for this. it's causing them increased rates of stress and lower levels of well being. so that obviously then impacts their ability to think clearly to think creatively, answer problem solve, to seek a long chat, which are all these mental exercises that we need. athletic lead has to be undertaking, but we know a diminished image will be as low. we just have a little bit of time left. i do want to ask you, what do you think is the solution? do we need stricter laws or a completely different kind of politics?
5:14 pm
sadly buys moser, one at certain they we have the examples in mexico for example, but we need a different kind of politics. we need different workplace if you think of a problem and as a workplace, because the violets and harassed me doesn't just come from the public. it also comes from there as well. so changing the norms that make it a case for people to be threatened and harassed, if you're in political office is one way as well. that was kimberly mcarthur from the a political foundation. thank you so much. we appreciate it. thank you as well . india is prime minister under under moody has been sworn in for a historic 3rd term at a ceremony in delhi. for the 1st time, you'll have to rely on coalition partners to govern after his hendo nationalist b. j. p. failed to secure an outright majority. yet to announce the makeup of his cabinet bond, you'll be governing with a national democratic alliance, and the legal dest, i'm party. you're up to date on the w news up next,
