the, the live of from berlin. this is dw news is special coverage. the european union. it looks a new parliament. last is for the greens as voters put in europe on a path towards the far right. first, indications here in germany shows the far right a of the party gaining, making it the 2nd strongest party behind the conservative and chancellor schultz, his social democrats, the s p div suffering what could be their worst result ever. and big walls as for the greens, their books share down by nearly half our special coverage of the european election continues right now. the
7:01 pm
brink off, it's good to have you. with this ballot accounting is underway, voters across the european union, and have elected a new parliament holding stations here in germany closed an hour ago and projections are delivering a clear picture wins for the conservatives and the far right losses for all of the parties that are in power right here in berlin degrees, the social democrats and the free democrats. the central left social democrats of chancellor or lock sholtes are projected to have their worst results in a nation wide vote ever gains coming in for the far right alternative for germany party, the a if the likely to become the 2nd strongest party in the country. germany accounts for $96.00 of the $720.00 european parliament seats that are up for grabs in the selection us. and we are getting indications of how germans have voted in these
7:02 pm
european elections. we've got some updated projected results as expected. the biggest share of the german vote appears to have gone to right there at the center, right. the conservatives, the c d, u. c. s u and the conservative seem to have improved on their results. for 5 years ago, they're showing a gain of about 7 percentage points, but it looks like many of the germans voters have turned their backs on the green since they entered germany's governing coalition. 3 years ago. we're seeing here a loss of nearly half their boat shared compared to the last european parliament election. and despite scandals at home and in brussels, the far right alternative for germany. the a f d seems to have gained about 5 percent compared to 5 years ago. the f d now pulling at 16.4 percent, and again,
7:03 pm
that is according to these latest projected results. so, all right, i'm going to crossover now is our chief, political correspondent, ina hogs issue, joins is from the green party headquarters here in berlin. so the, let's, let's talk about the results that we have so far the greens and sufferings significant losses in their selection. that's right, brands. and there was silence here in the, in the hole where i am in berlin, where the 1st stick as a page on the screen. the greens had expected losses compared to 2019. when they took away some 20 percent of votes. this time around, they were expecting some 14 percent and they said some of them even said that it would was still possible to become number 2 in these elections. however, the voters apparently didn't give them the support and actually the numbers was
7:04 pm
devastating. it was the big below. so some 12.5 percent will have the exact result later. of course. but um, so far it will be roughly 12 percent. so that's almost half of what they got 5 years ago. and then the potty chap people took to the sage and said that of course they're not happy with the result that they will have to discuss the reasons. and it was particularly interesting to see the results among young voters where it seems like the greens have really suff at the biggest long. and if you look at how the young germans voted in some groups, the grades lost some 20 percentage points. yeah, that is amazing. when you consider that young voters have traditionally been part of the fuel behind the greens and the green movement. so what's the explanation here? what are the greens and what are they saying to explain why they have shed so many
7:05 pm
young voters of the? well, there's a radio base also happening on social media where people are beginning to ask themselves just how big was the influence of social media itself. why we know that the, if the party, the far right party but also the conservative, all very successful with the young people. so that is where apparently young german voters have headed to the conservative and to the far right h d. and that will, of course, have to be debated and discussed behind the scenes here amongst the policy leadership. but of course, another factor is also just the importance that german vote has gave to the core competency. the one topic that the greens have identified for themselves that is climate protection. that was 5 years ago. it was the topic number one. now it's only topic number fall behind the war and ukraine, secure in peace in europe, social security and migration. so of course that is also something where the greens will have to see how they can appeal to vote is again, just one and
7:06 pm
a half years before the federal elections. yeah, the tables can turn quickly in politics. it is for sure. our chief political correspondent, nina has a green party headquarters here in for lynn need to thank you and want to go now to my core correspondent and colleague matthew moore. he is at germany's, for white alternative for germany, the a if the party headquarters here in berlin and matthew talked to me about what you're hearing there. i mean, these are, these are strong games that the, a of the is packing all yeah, that's right. read basically, this is a huge result for the, for the far right. yeah. the, the, every time the result it comes up on the big screen. there's a huge to you. and everyone puts the box on the go and get another round. and because quite frankly, they feel like they have defied that for 6, we have to hide the statement suggested that they were going to do it. they were basically were on the world that they were trajectory. and actually they leaving
7:07 pm
free staff that the results are percentage of the do the same solomon by default of $1110.00, i looked you like something like 16 points or so that's a huge jump for the policy that i really feel like when did there seems like let me see it's a, it's a shows that despite having about campaign that the message to the whole message off a top flight on migration ticket button will power from, from the, from the dressers. and i'm really kind of trying to, to, to, to, to take on a different foreign policy that comes to the warranty. that these messages are really striking, a carpet. good if you, if you look at the numbers, they're mean 16 percent so far, 16.4 percent. they had been hoping for 20 percent least that's what they had been pulling on earlier this year. matthew talked to me about what has happened recently . i mean, there, it's been one scandal after another with the a f d. the. okay, so like the big picture, the party was doing was by it couldn't by,
7:08 pm
it's done that really well on the page. right. so it was at some point talk to something like 25 percent. and then there was a number of scandals beginning of january of this year where reports on average the members of the parts you had met with far right now should list the austrian new doors that goes to talk about most before patients, months of job and citizens then that they took a huge tumble in the poles, 2 or 3 percent. then in the whole town pain of the european elections, the 2 candidates i've been kinda playing in scandal. and that's because one of them, how does age, his age was arrested on suspicion of spying for china. now, the other is a curious to, to, to money from a russian failure who's, how you come to display this information about your ballpark and so on. so it was looking bad for upon a voters ignored that. i'm stuck with them and they say they've done. they've got 5 percent looking like getting 5 percent more than they did last time on the c or the mercury is really defiant. really the feel that the vindicated and asked about,
7:09 pm
you know, what about how damage it was that was, it was this gun, let's say maybe it cost us $2.00 or 3 percent. but ultimately, we're looking like the 2nd strongest policy i'm, we're going to bring that ourselves as we head into critical elections. interested in germany in september of this year. yeah, that's right. i mean, if these numbers hold, it will put them the 2nd strongest political parties from germany headed towards the european parliament, matthew moore, at the of the headquarters here in berlin. matthew, thank you. if you just joining us, this is our special coverage of the european election, who's a recap of the election number so far. millions of voters and 21 year opinion countries went to the polls for the past 4 days. and today course super sunday, that's the day when the ballad counting begins. if predictions are accurate, right, we parties will make major games. the outcome will shape the policies of the
7:10 pm
european union for the next 5 years on issues ranging from like ration to climate change to security. 720 seats are up for grabs in the european parliament. when we ask voters across europe, why they think it's important to take part in today's elections? here's what they told us. when was it the, for me, it's a duty to fight, because i think we'll have the freedom in half democracies to choose out representatives. so hopefully that's the reason i'm going to one of those i know i'm the 0 right wing parties that the openly talking about leaving the, you know, you could ok then just for the, for the home and it's just the slogan. but we don't know what political decisions might be taken if that were to happen, the new the button to me. but i think the thing is that it's very important to vote and that everybody should participate. but really,
7:11 pm
i have many doubts about who to vote for in the selections. it doesn't like me and i love it about. all right, so let me hear this video now is my colleague and our correspondent christine one way, christine is actually the big surprises so far. and i was just looking at the numbers we're getting in. i'm from other european union countries showing it big wins for the conservatives. right. and the far right. that's right. and that's what we expect so that the conservatives will maintain their dominance. but that the far right policies will see big gains, that it's important to just underscore the point that there isn't a single far i've movement. so this is different uh, fluoride policies call drive policies in, in different countries. all of them making very significant gains as expects its tapping into this little antique establishment sentiment that you have in your price now appealing to a broad audience. and particularly young people, which has been interesting. social media influence that you were hearing from,
7:12 pm
from mena earlier on. so that's been very fix if they've been very, very effective at taking big issues, simplifying fiance's making. so just feel like they were present the kind of change the radical change that's perhaps needed in europe. at a time when life just bearing down on people, the cost of living is higher, the standard of living is high. you know, i'm from a different part of the world and i was speaking to the end the semester last pretty good. you for your opinions, right? and i mean that you have the pen to me, tell people, you know what these big bailouts people went with terry too. and she said, you know, people are just used to different standards. yeah. just relatively. yeah. right. it's, it's, it's a standard that, that's, that's dropping and, and people are expressing their, their opposition to that use with the past few years to covering european union politics. you know, 5 years ago, the last time we voted for a new parliament, the dominating issue was climate change. and we sold greens make significant change . and now it seems like the tables have been turned compatriots, right. climate change is a big facts and it will say in certain courses, right?
7:13 pm
and in certain places where people still have their privilege, i mean these are the issues that concern them. but for most people it's really those present body issues, right? to say, i can't afford the quality of life that, that i would like. and then of course there are issues like migration which is on top of in this. but what the far right policies have this fixed will be done is to take these issues and make the issue particularly though irregular migration. these are the people coming to your control seeking the prospects and in some cases, in most cases, also seeking refuge to, to make this somehow a symbol of, of the famed is off here to say that your opinion isn't working for us. and, and, you know, if, if we go off to the institutions, if we're penetrate those institutions only, then we can get that change that we're seeking. so there's just this appetite in your for change mainstream politics isn't delivering the message to is that the, the maybe have will have to pull back in the next 5 years. it is. yeah, because a lot of these parties have these nationalists sentiments and the idea of the big in europe, the most central sort of field, more power was to brussels,
7:14 pm
isn't subpoenaed to them. they want to bring that power back to, to the nation states. and that's what we can expect to see in terms of discussions around treaties. for example, you traci's and the reform that somebody been quoting for. all right, christine, could help me with this. we'll be talking to you again throughout the evening. thank you. you're watching the w news are special coverage of the european election . here's a reminder now of what we're talking about. and the numbers that are coming in projected results from germany. germany's election to the european parliament are pointing to gains for the white as expecting the biggest share of the german vote appears to have gone to the center. right. the conservatives, the cd you've c s u. they seem to have improved significantly on the results from 5 years ago showing a gain of about 7 percentage points. it looks like many of germany's voters have turned their backs on the greens since they entered germany's governing coalition 3 years ago with nearly of
7:15 pm
a loss of really half of their vote share compared to the last election, a stinging sting last there for the greens, you're watching the w two's, i'll be back at the top of the our, our continuing coverage of the european election right here on the, enjoying the views and come to take a look at this. l t. v highlights me every week inbox. subscribe. now the the, it is some of the current key, more people than in such a passion life crisis within pod for somebody that sort of the nation press, the ag invested.
