hello and welcome to our show. just even busy in berlin. and you leaders meeting and brussels have endorsed candidates to fill the blocks top jobs. they've nominated ortho left on the line for a 2nd term as president of the european commission. former portuguese prime minister antonio costa will be the future head of the european council. well estonian prime minister kaya call us is likely to become the next use foreign policy chief robots, and much solo. a conservative for malta is meanwhile, expected to be elected for a 2nd term as president of the parliament, where some of the nominations for top posts have yet to be confirmed. in the secret ballot correspond, jack peck, and joins us for the latest from brussels. jack um, is there any surprises these nominations? not really to be honest with you, steven. it has gone off as we have lodge. we expected it to and that's because the sens risk police cool majority that basically won the most of those in the european

parliament elections. at the beginning of june, they club together and decided that these nominations would be the one to be put forward. so now we know that sort of underlying that you are paying commission president will be nominated by the leaders here. but she has to go to a vote in new york in parliament, where the 720 elected members, they get to decide whether they approve her or not. and they don't have to vote on political lines because it's a secret ballot. so she has to pretty much get the best part of 400 votes in order to get herself over the line. so you can expect the european peoples policy. there's the political groups she comes from the day you will approve her. but we don't know if all of the others, the socialist and the liberals, that she needs the best thing of as well in the european parliament. well that whether they would vote in line, it's not a done deal yet. but most people do expect that while it might be tight on the line will be able to secure those voters. kaya kyla, the stony and

a prime minister who's just being voted just being appointed, the foreign policy chief, she'll have to go through the same thing. antonio acosta though he doesn't have to do it. he gets his job today. he'll start in december as you are being cancelled president. we know the 5 years ago that vote for funded line was actually quite close. it looks to be close again. this time. what is going to be necessary to bring her over line? what you'll need to basically courier enough to support, make sure she gets those votes from her own political party and keep the socialist on line in line. what's interesting here tonight, what happened this summer though, was the bose among the of the leaders as well because it's an east georgia maloney, the prime minister. we know that she actually abstained the co sources that told me that she abstained on approving the appointment of a sort of on the line going forward. the hard right group that was known as the e. c. all grief,

any european parliament which georgia miller and his party sits within, they are seen in quite upset the they didn't, despite being the biggest party in new york and parliament, we expect this dose and changing focus on how they will group together. she felt that they deserved one of these tough jobs, but instead is going to a sense of variety, to christian democrats, a socialist, and to a liberal politician. so the abstention really say some said something. it means that the italians, one in favor and is quite ready for a big economy like it to lead to not to prove the european commission president in the vote like we saw here tonight. how did, how, how that will affect things going forward. but it will show that the relationship between the italian prime minister and the, the future commission president, if she gets approved us live on the line that may be rocky going forward. i'm assuming that funded line does when, what can we expect from her and from the commission in the coming 5 years. so it's a high priority, and we actually had a the, the ukranian pregnant, the president brought him, it is
1:05 am
a landscape here in brussels that the summit today, high priority is to get ukraine in new york in union. we saw the members at 12 stars, but that will have to overcome a veto specifically by the hun, gary employment and civic to oregon, who is basically said he's opposed to everything that's happened today, including funded lives nomination, including many of the other things that have happened the gardens are often opposing things, but nobody was able to veto this show. also try and get hug. green deal back on track. there was some shit. so way of some of the green deal agenda to try and make the european union the 1st climate and mutual consent involves the priority to us of on the line. she'll have a lot of pressure to do that. and specifically as well, what we know going forward, and we've heard it in, in the press conference is off of this summit, is that the issue of security and defense is going to be a priority. it's widely expected that in the next you repeat and commission that will be a specific sort of unit by defense of security was that has an ever being really

specifically in your opinion before how that will look, how that shape that will be involved. the lions image fixed you can part about your past that you are a problem if i did this job park and brussels. thank you very much. let's have a quick look now. some of the other stories making headlines around the world. at least 6 people have been killed and several more injured after passenger train crashed into a bus in southern slovakia, the train was traveling from a check capital proud to budapest. the collision occurred new novas on key 110 kilometers east of the capital brought us lava. to us space agency, nasa has commissioned deal on most company space specs to help the orbit the international space station in 2030 essentially bringing it to a controlled crash on earth to end its operations. the i ss has been operated by nasa, n space agencies of canada, japan, russia, and europe. for about a quarter of a century. us supreme court will allow emergency abortions to be performed in

idaho, at least for now, according to a newly released opinion. the justices would reinstate a lower court ruling, the pause the states near total abortion band, which temporarily allowed hospitals in the state to perform emergency abortions to protect the life of the mother. we use president joe biden and donald trump have both arrived in georgia for their 1st debate ahead of november's presidential election. a fight and his predecessor are set to go head to head with poll, showing them in a tight race for the white house. the 2 oldest presidential candidates ever will have 90 minutes to try and went over voters with both candidates historically unpopular among the public. the debate will take place without a studio audience at the cnn headquarters in april. presidential debates are traditionally a must see part of the race for the white house, but this year many voters say they've already tuned out because of the candidates

themselves. and i, i just wish that we had the better candidates i'm, i just think they're both not fit to run in office. we were built on diversity. it's a crying shame that this has come to, this is really the 4th time the joe biden. and donald trump need to the presidential debate. typically, this verbal battle for the favor of voters has done this a highlight in the campaign. this time, there's a noticeable, flat crystal excitement. this, of course, has a lot to do with the age of the 2 candidates. we've just heard that most americans, one, someone younger to late that countries someone they believe is capable of finding solutions for the significant challenges we face to many public appearances. neither presses invite in, nor former president trump seem to have the energy nor mental fitness that voters
1:09 am
are looking for in normal election years. the vendor is determined by their ability to convincingly sell their political agenda this year. people seem to be more focus on who will make the most mistakes and provide better fodder for engine. that means i think uh trump's gonna go on the attack on bite. and i think he's gonna hit him on a lot of lot of key things. i think bite is probably gonna be a defense a lot. i hope it's substantial, but they actually discuss the real issues. from an international perspective. we look closely observe their stance on china, us commitment to nato, and of course, support for ukraine. however, many americans may not even watch this 1st debate. i don't really know how meaningful it would be. but you know, people who've been asking for us and so we're going to do it and they should do it . i'm not gonna watch it because what, why, right? to big grown man yelling at each other. you know, one's racist. you know,
1:10 am
they are the ones a little too old. i'm not planning to watch it. uh, i've seen videos and both can it's talking and both of them make me pretty sad to have the biggest challenge for both candidates. and the coming months will be to, in the age, the double hater, as those who dislike both candidates and encourage them to vote in their favor rather than up staying out of sheer frustration. well, i got, i got to say to people got a vote. they just got a vote, you know, is the who, who, who do you think is the best person for the culture? you just pull file that report. she joins me now for more. you know, what is on the line in this debate tonight for these 2 candidates? yeah, you know, tonight is really a huge nights here in the united states. also, all the debate will set the tone for the months leading up to the november 5th election. the outcome should be decided by a few,
1:11 am
a 1000 votes in battleground states. so actually neither candidate can really afford to lose this 1st debate. it's interesting we just got in the lasers post today and they suggested trump has a slight advantage over biting in these battleground states and leads the overall pulse of 149 to 47 percent units. can we say what issues are most important to voters in the selection? and then can we expect that they'll actually be debated meaningfully during this debate? as you know, is the thing is it will ultimately come down to how i'm decided voters few off to tonight. so of course issues metal budded will matter more how the 2 candidates perform. however, the issues that will come up uh, really include the economy, the 2 military conflicts in ukraine and israel and of course, abortion rights. and this is
1:12 am
a topic which is much trickier for donald trump as he needs on the one side of the support from the evan jellico volta blocked when the election. and they are of course, strictly against the motion. but on the other hand, many other republicans, especially women, one tend to support the rights to get an abortion. so we will watch that topic on the discussion about it very closely. in the next hours. we know that these 2 candidates don't like each other. they have a history with one another. do you expect that kind of personal items to really come through, or is there the potential that that might turn voters even further off? they definitely don't like each other at all, and it is in fact, the 1st time since the debate in 2020 that the 2 men are in the same room. and you just mentioned that it's a very special set up. this time there is no audience and the mice will be turned off at once. the time is over so they can talk over each other, which of course, i don't know. trump mainly did
1:13 am
a during the last debates. i'm sure job. i didn't vote criticized from sharply and warn people to remember the k o as in violence, who spreads during his presidency, but you will do that. it's a joe biden to do that in a way that is appropriate for a president. trump, honestly, it's nearly impossible to predict the 2 men. well, both actually fighting for a 2nd to him, right? are only standing 8 feet away from each other and that is pretty close. uh, some of us might remember how donald trump was walking around, doing his debate with hillary clinton and how at one point you stood behind her trying to threaten her. this is your physical presence, but maybe he will do something like that tonight again because there's no dollar to your peers much stronger physically than president bite to eat. as he mentioned, those polls can we say, who has more to lose trump or button through the

age of to buy and use of course, a major issue for undecided voters in that regard. he's really more vulnerable to provide these 2 or 3 glitches which then can be used over and over again for internet means that make him look even worse than he actually is. on the other hand, no one is expecting from to come up with a new role thought through political concepts. so in a way, if he, donald trump behaves some but okay, there is not much for him to do is tonight. all right, that's the w's. washington bureau chief genus poll, giving us a preview of that debate. thank you very much. alright, that's it for us. for now. we'll be back soon with more headlines. in the meantime, find us online. g, w dot com for also on youtube, on the, the news channel. and there's the w app. you can find it online, so you can keep up with the latest news.
