tv   The Day  Deutsche Welle  June 28, 2024 10:30pm-11:01pm CEST

10:30 pm
a destroyed slide start. what is the legacy of this wide spread races, depression? today, the screen we need to talk about here, the stories, shadows of german colonialism the on thursday night, you as president biden informer, you as president trump faced off in their 1st presidential debate of this campaign . trump at least a barrage of entrance one after the other. there was no fact checking not from the moderators and not from president by me either. why not last night? was definitely not one of biden's beds, but wasn't so bad that he should stop running for re election. today without being asked directly by delivered a clear answer. no. i broke off in berlin. this is the day the
10:31 pm
we could've been to different one, which said trump lives is way through the debate on the optic. and by the last that on the back 51 bit. the other which says find stumbles in the debate. and instead we got the 2nd we staring into oblivion. and i've never heard so much mumbling what i'm watching. very aged man bickering with each other. it was scary. also coming up 2 weeks ago, the far right one more seats in the european parliament and to put the brakes on the far right for its president macro and called snap elections in his own country . for this coming sunday, it's a gamble and one that my cron could lose. you know, why me stomach was playing with fire. he's thing of a benches game because he wants to a p a as in moderate to stable points. but he's the one i just perceived as the one
10:32 pm
who's been putting the french in such a messy situation. so it's very unlikely that the strategy would work the way it was. it's our viewers watching on tv as in the united states and to all of you around the world. welcome. we begin today with a us a presidential debate that may have had the winner, but there's no doubt about for the loser. you as president biden to inform you as president trump when face to face last night. the democratic party wanted this debate the earliest ever before a presidential election to dispel any worries about biden's advanced age and his fitness for a 2nd term, but it did not work out that way. in fact, only minutes into the debate. the focus shifted onto biden's poor performance, and that's where it stay trusting the party of the president into crisis mode. we'll talk about reaction and calls for bite and not to run for a 2nd term in just a moment, but 1st a look at what are the debate and what is now being called a debacle for the democrats. the 46 president of united states jo by the
10:33 pm
president's loyal supporters blamed it on a bad night, a head cold so that his campaign. but many americans, especially those planning to vote for his challenger, donald trump signed by and what they've seen for a long time failure to get his point across under pressure. trump often appeared to struggle to understand by it. and rather than to disagree with all those people, the idea that they're gonna, i'm like, i'm proposing that everybody's a paper. the millionaires pay one percent one percent. so no, and after i would not raise the cost of social security for anybody under $400000.00. after that it began to make the wealthy began to pay their fair share. and how much for his part trunk focused on voters pessimism about immigration and the economy and claim things were better when he was an officer. we have the greatest economy in the history of a country. we have never done so well. every, every body was amazed by it. other countries were copying us from supporters were
10:34 pm
in high spirits after the debate in the 1st 3 seconds when president biden was speaking, my i was what happened to his voice. he's staring into oblivion, and i've never heard so much mumbling. it was scary. some loyal bite and supporters were left looking for a silver lining, but calls immediately came for desperate measures, replacing biting with a more capable democratic candidate on the optic surviving loss that hold on the fact by one bit. so you have to determine what's more important. you optics and facts, and i'm big on the facts on still like binding on the debate for me. but i know he looked at ro bite and agreed to debate from much further ahead of the november election than as usual in order to drum up support for his campaign. but according to even some top democrats, that plan seems to have backfire, we don't even hear the big table as julia from the law has a campaign strategy advisor here in germany and a former campaign adviser to former us president for rock obama. julius was our 1st
10:35 pm
guest here on the j 8 years ago in the topic, then was about us presidential politics. so it's good to see you again very fast. 8 years ago. yeah. what were we talking about? we were, we were discussing debates, but nothing like what we saw last night. so let me ask you, what did we see last night? i think the button campaign wanted exactly the scenario of the face to face. you know, head of match up between shop and biting and you know, they got what they, what they want to accept. the candidate didn't show up. mm hm. so i think it was a complete disaster. i think we all saw it. and the question of course now is this joe biden step down? i think the jury's in joe biden is pushing him to continue to stay on the trail job . i just delivered a speech in north carolina and a democratic establishment. bronco by many others are rallying behind them and saying, well, anyone can have a bad 1st debate. now the question is how he bounces back. what do you think this what we saw last night, was it just a bad night?
10:36 pm
no, i think we saw a candidate who does not have the tools to communicate in this type environment. stop, you know what, what, what is, what does that mean? do you mean these? are you saying he's too old? or i think we got a 130 days until election day, and this is a critical contest between donald trump and joe biden. we saw one vital candidate who, you know, was out there, you know, speaking not the truth. and a lot of cases, donald trump, but we saw a candidate who couldn't take advantage of that, who wasn't able to make his point that thank you in for a very long campaign. if you don't have a canada contrived the message. i wanted to take a listen to reaction today from the current us house speaker, and that the former and us house speaker, and then talk about that. i think everyone has been discussing here is not everyone's compared to a person who was lying the whole time we saw integrity on one side and dishonesty
10:37 pm
on the other. that's how i saw it. okay, so there's the clearly along party lines there. right? my phone explode is last night during the debate and it's been that way all day or . okay, so what, so what about you were contacting the united states will be under the book context, the democratic party. are they really, i mean we've been reporting all day panic, we're damage control. did this mean where they blindsided by something, i mean on a panic scale from one to 10, this is about a 48. okay. yeah, this thing blew up and everyone saying we need to change this dramatically. i actually agree with mike johnson, the republican, he is not up for the job in terms of campaigning. joe biden is up for the job in terms of being the president and he has delivered over the last 3 years. you can make that argument up in town for this is about a campaign, not perception is reality. and the perception right now is that joe biden is too old and that he's not capable of doing the job. the white house has said today that
10:38 pm
by me had a head cold and a sore throat last night. so if there is the case, why didn't they postpone the debate? i mean, if, if i'm in his closest orbit incident, my job to protect him shouldn't. but his advice is that mister, president, les, let's wait a week. yeah. i mean, waiting a week and this type environment is deadly. okay. would that have been worse than what happened last night? i don't think they could have been anything worse than what happened last night and, but at the same time, i mean, if they saw exactly what happened last night throughout the course of last 67 days while they're prepping and then i think, you know, it is a travesty to send them out that way. but clearly they felt that he had a chance. um, joe biden probably pushed them as well. uh, she is as close as advisor again, she's pushing him to stay in the race, but they should have taken them out if that's what they've been seeing all week long. is that what you're hearing that the president's wife is? is she more in this then? then the president himself, nissan moments after he left the stage,
10:39 pm
they went over to a watch party and they put joe biden back on stage jill bite and was firing up the crowd. and she said, joe, you know, you answered every question. so they knew how bad this was, they wanted to create a new image today with the rally at joe biden to out there with her dress on saying, vote vote vote. i mean, they're saying, and they may have to make the case to say, joe, by mistake and disgrace, they got brock obama saying the same thing. now, you know, anyone can have a bad debate or bomb ahead, you know, remember 2012. you had a terrible for us, the baby got a rama everett and come and present and usually has a terrible 1st debate. i've just never seen a 1st debate that was that, that and i wonder if there's even a 2nd debate to be honest with you. well we, we've heard this in the last hour from the white house that there will be a 2nd debate. well, the question is, donald trump showing up for a 2nd big cause if i'm in the trump campaign. yeah, i'm saying no more debate as well. we've got another get to want to bring in the joint is afraid says no, i'm frank spent many, many years as a white house correspondent. he was also a, you're
10:40 pm
a chief in washington for c a. cnn. what i work there. he's now with the george washington university school of media and public affairs. let's see if we can go to frank. i'll be ready to go to frank. there we go. or does that mean that when we've gone there you go. frank. frank? good. we had a little technical problem there, frank, let me start with just asking you, what was your reaction to what happened last night? very much along the lines of what you were just talking about. i was sitting there watching this very closely taking notes. i've covered many of these debates, and my 1st thought that this was not going to go well, was actually watching joe by walk out on the stage. he looked stiff. you look very slow. and then when he opened his mouth, his voice was raspy. and then as we spoke, he was at times, as we've discussed incoherent. the word has been used here as has been used elsewhere. disaster. it isn't on medic, unmitigated disaster,
10:41 pm
not only with the optics terrible and was the performance terrible. but the actual substance of what bite and was saying and how he was responding to the things that protects the and the attacks of the trump was making. they were weak. they were sort of generic. and in many cases they didn't come at all times. it was even invited by the moderators. you know, anything more, you want to say anything more you want to follow. and the concern that he in the campaign have to have is not only is what the spotlight and the, and the snapshot now mean for voters. but do they start thinking, oh wait, the elections of november for years, he'll be $86.00 if he's re elected one. this term ends as he capable of another 4 or 5 years of this. that's a huge question. what about donald trump? last night he told a lot of untruth, what allies, whatever you want to call it, there was no real time fact checking not it wasn't done by the underwriters. so
10:42 pm
that was part of these new rules. i mean, was that a mistake? it wasn't a mistake at all as far as i'm concerned for the moderators to try to play fact track. you can't do that every single time. somebody says something, you're going to jump in. what's the threshold? who decides how long you do go with the fact checker? who should have been there last night was a guy named joe by the fact checker on vitamins. a guy named trump. it's called a debate for a reason. they're standing side by side with one another. there were any number of opportunities for both of the candidates, particularly trump, or started particularly biden, to respond forcefully to what his opponent was saying. weather was about abortion, about the border about you credit on about putting one after the other and, and by the simply did not respond. and so while today there's a lot of conversation about his hesitancy and couldn't get through a sentence that is mumbling. if you forget all that, forget the, the, the, the, the, the performance and the style and look at the substance it was,
10:43 pm
it was very lacking. and that's where the fact checking. sure to take advice. how it should frank, the media cover this campaign after last night moving forward? i mean, this is, are, you know, this is territory that for no one has ever encountered before. me. can you think of anything in your professional career that similar to this like this to the club closest was after one break into the base. and i was, you know, covering way again in my early years, and he put in a very poor performance. questions came up. is he too old? you know, and in the, you know, subsequent debate, the age of who came up with he has that great linebacker mazda, i'm not going to make front of my comments using an experience, but nothing like this. nothing like where you do not need to be a physician. you do not need to be an expert to see that this performance was a dreadful performance. and that raises serious questions about his capacity is, stamina is coherence. and so how does the media cover out of media cover this the,
10:44 pm
the coverage has changed substantially, because now this is the narrative surrounding, you go by a drunk showed up trumpets as usual, you know, blow viet itself with lots of inaccuracies. okay, that's that story. but that's kind of been the story that hasn't changed. the bottom story has changed. many people around the world, especially here in europe, are worried that the us super of how the leadership in the world is simply as dissipating right before the very eyes is the impact of america's domestic dysfunction. is it being reported to us voters as it should be? in your opinion, i mean when people go to the ballot box, do they realize the weight that is carried by their decision or it's such a great question and i, you know, the answer is yes and no. because this has been the refrain of democrats and others, almost since the time donald trump stepped into the office that he was
10:45 pm
a threat to democracy since january 6th there pictures and trials to go with that course. now the supreme court has ruled and just today made a ruling that might let some of those have been convicted of have ledger sentences or no sentences. so it's very complicated, it's very complicated. but the democrats have been trying to make democracy. and what's at stake here and around the world, very much a part of this of this campaign ultimately though, ultimately is buying who has to make that case. yeah. and that's why last night was was, was the fastest for him because he failed to do it for he says, no, we appreciate you taking the time to talk with us and i'm glad that you had time on a friday to join us. thank you, frank. oh, my pleasure, thanks for holding. so um, as you know, just a lot can happen in politics between now and november, right. um if i did decide not to see cuz like a term who would be ready to replace it or that's the question. i mean, i want to go down the list of why can, can there is
10:46 pm
a list that you actually put together for us. so 1st and foremost is the vice president come over here is now the vice president is the person that most people would assume. okay, would automatically move on. i'm not, not in this case. well, joe biden said he is going to be a transitional president. clearly, that's not the direction he's going in right now. a couple of harris did not have the policy portfolio that would put her into position to take over right away. yeah, she was in charge of migration. and if you look at her polling numbers, they actually way below, they were like, there were some vines very worst binds, especially when it comes to personal approval writing. so i think she'd have a steep climb to make in order to fill those sheets. now we can go through the list . i think the one thing that always pops up is michelle obama. and of course this is a wet fever, dream of democrats to say, hey, why does michelle obama come in and save the day clinic? she's not been in politics trending all day on social media by the way, clearly. i mean, she's a brilliant communicator,
10:47 pm
but she also has not been in the debate written ever. yeah. and so, you know, the thought of her stepping into reno, donald trump. i think that's a lot of the coverage last. like in the us. i even saw it. several commentators could refer to her as big mike, did you hear that? i saw that. okay. i'll ask you to go to the top of your list of possible, you know, candidates is the current california governor gavin do some walk. well because he's been in the right now. he's the beta ronda santa. so one of the old folks on the republican side, so he's actually in the juice, he's run campaigns in california, it's successful campaigns. and i think one of the other reasons is that he has a great power to raise my. and if they were to swap out fine, and this would need to be a candidate who can you know, flip the switch and the microseconds and actually raise money and hit the campaign trail running. i think kevin is what position they do. so is he not tarnished or by being from california and being very far to the left in a country? that is, is,
10:48 pm
it seems to be flooding more towards the right. i don't think that calvin newsome would be, you know, the premier candidate to sway any swing voters or republicans. but i think 1st and foremost, you wouldn't need someone who can rally democratic base who can bring the party together. and i think he could be that person, gretchen whitmore, the governor of michigan, that i think she would pre designated in terms of electronics strategy. obviously michigan being in the rust belt being one of the main swing states, she would have the ability to deliver those electro votes from michigan and oh, i think graduate whitmore is a formidable candidate. she can tell a story of success in the midwest. uh, she's a woman that would certainly help us well with the democratic base and the electorate as it looks like right now. so i think pressure on what it would be for me. and then there's the governor of illinois. yeah. j. b print skirt. yeah. okay. i mean, i will admit, i had to do some research on that and i bet most of our viewers have no idea. yeah . but look, if joe biden were to step down, the campaign fundraising war chest,
10:49 pm
it would be the player. so you wouldn't need someone who can bring in a lot of money. you can use a building, right? you could self funded the entire campaign. you could probably throw 2000000000 yeah . right in the campaign mix and start running his own campaign. okay. and he of course, bring from the midwest middle no way he will bring that as well. the money that you're buying has raised for his re election campaign. if he were to say, i'm not, i'm not gonna see the 2nd term. what happens to that money to me? now? you can transfer yourself, there's a democratic money, and then there's a job. i'm on a how both are different pockets and you can just transfer it on a 2nd. donald trump presidency seems more likely mail than ever that are there back channel communications between berlin and trump's team already taking place. i mean, do we know what are you here? i mean, talking to members of parliament here in germany, they are very convenient. keenly aware of the possibility of another jump term. remember back in 2016 when trump took over the transition period took place. yeah.
10:50 pm
they didn't know how to get ahold of the guy who so they were calling trump, how 1800 jumped out in, did just to get to get, get in touch. so now of course, one of the designated secretaries, the state is the former richard carnality former. uh you've asked me to have to do here. you're in berlin, right? and so i think outreach is taking place. sure. and like, and as you mentioned, looking at the swing state building right now, it is more likely that trump is going to be present then john den job i before we run out of time. um buttons team says that button will be there. there will be a 2nd debate with drop on september 10th scheduled. the strategy is not changing if you were in biden's ear. yeah. what would you advise? i mean, clearly whatever the prep for this debate a took place, it did not work. so they needed a different type of prep. one is of course, have them ready make sure that he does not have a head cold that took place apparently yesterday, but again, he has to figure out how to be able to drive
10:51 pm
a message. trump gave him so many opportunities, it wasn't that trump had a great night. trump was lying on multiple occasions like stuff, county. yeah, and, and joe biden should have taken advantage, but clearly it did not have the tools. so again, democrats you to build a structure in order for joe biden to come in and deliver a message. there is a message and joe biden should have said last night. luck. you have to make the choice who is fighting for you. donald trump is fighting for himself. familiars, billionaires and corporate interest. i am funding for the middle class, but we never heard that message because joe biden wasn't able to deliver. yeah. all right, julia, from the line. julie's is always good to have you here. back at the big table and i have a feeling we're going to be talking more than once between now and the thank you, joyce. so well from american to french politics. france goes to the polls on sunday and some have elections that are being seen as a big gamble by president emmanuel macro on my phone called the vote in response to his party's dismal showing the european elections earlier this month. our

correspondence on you've held the car reports to night from here. it's just these to go the forwarding election back to change everything in front. no good, conservative me a so far below is out can to sing voters in this virus neighborhood. many of them a worried about the surge of the far right and the possibility of the anti immigration nation is ready for meeting the next government. it was a c, a m, french of l. julian, originated in missouri. easy, nice, feel good here. and i love and my friend zones in my home, but when i have the bad my back today or tomorrow and we use, i do use the back to us because there will be nothing to keep me here given what the state and government are put in place to buy it to me off the last 3, but i say it is ok. it's a very important election. i say. thank you, and really worried by all the populism in rabble rousing in the discourse, united mortgage, if you want to know the school,

but it's not just anxiety about default, right? many of the french capital. angry at president mccall, he recently called a snap election following his puppies, crushing defeat. but the fod like nations ready, which took more than 20 percent of the boat. in recent, you ought to be an extra. the 16, this is your decision by my call isn't thought through. it's immature, he shot himself and a foot shot in the feet of all the french. he's put everyone into this impossible situation. i'm plunged everyone into a deep mess. were all on the same mess on it was don't, i'm got it. i'm supposed to be now headboard. i think people are just really fed up and deeply frustrated. given that under president mccord's 2 terms, we've seen an explosion of the far right. even though one of the promises of the president in 20172022, was to set up a barrage against the far right. b selections on about replacing macklin. he said
10:54 pm
he'd remain president the results could see the see we can this position. michael faces a see we strategy from the far right that the marine depend and sort of done by the last one to limit to immigration and crap nationality rights for children. born in fonts, a phone and bids, and the lines of both of these on the list called the new pop in the front. these come together in a bit to stop the far right. the high state selection is all about this, the make up of the french condiment or the assembly enough to not behind me the person my call center spotty does not have a majority in there. he's been stuck trying to possibles, but it's unclear whether the snap elections would really change that situation. now that all feels with the far right could become strong, go in there, but there's no thought he gets an absolute majority. like the opinion polls are showing some feel it could also and even more political chaos in front,
10:55 pm
explode. see preston, macross gambled, old snap elections could backfire hunting the far right. its 1st, we had shot a governing funds and taking the country into uncharted waters on a global level as well. and funds for the far right to arrive in power and such a major. this is the 2nd biggest economy within, within the european union. and this is one of the world's biggest ministry powers. it's greatly volt and ukraine. it's a both in africa. um, it's a, it's as country that, that, that really, you know, projects itself will be on this board for the, for it to happen in france really with, um, you know, pay a bip seismic event time for some last minute. the company, sundays vote would offer a clearer picture of where fridge politics is headed. there would be a 2nd bonus voting off of this one. and that would show friends this indeed in for
