the the, this is dw news life from berlin, gunshots out to donald trump. raleigh. take a look. what happened? the former us president comes under fire and an apparent assassination attempt. he's injured but says he is fine. the i'm hold of him out. welcome to the program. we're following the breaking news
3:01 am
story coming in from the u. s. right now, that an apparent assassination attempt on former president donald trump, and he's been injured as a raleigh in pennsylvania. trump was addressing the crowd at the riley when gunshots rang out. let's take a look at what happened. the secret service officer rushed onto the stage and hoot trunk to the ground. tom, glad to hear. he was kept on the ground and tell you to be taken away from then raised his fist into the air and appeared to show the words fight. trump had blood visible on his ear. he was then led off the stage and taken away in a vehicle before as you say, the shooter has since been neutralized and the person in the crowd has been killed . the secret service is investigating it as an authority. assassination attempt us president joe biden has also issued
3:02 am
a statement after the attack at the raleigh. i've been fairly brief. my, all the agencies of the federal government has some situation based on what we know now. i have tried to get ahold of donald, he's with his doctors. they apparently he's doing well. i plan on talking now. surely. i hope when i get back to the telephone book, there's no place in america with this kind of violets. it's sick. it sick? it's one of the reason why we have to unite this country. we cannot allow for this to be happening. we cannot be like this. we cannot condone this. well for more on this story, i'm joined by dw washington bureau chief anus paul, who's joining us now from washington. d. c. e s. this story is unbelievable. there is no confirmation that gun shots were fired. what more can you tell us about that?
3:03 am
i think the most important news is really that donald trump, former president donald trump, is doing fairly well. he is with his doctors right now, and he's checked to put out a statement or has come pained, put out a statement right away, thinking law enforcement and 1st responder for the creek action during this assassination attempt. i think one can talk about that right now. so that's what we know, but we also know that at least one spectator is dead. so you've got shots and to are in critical uh conditions. so this really cause of fema nights in which the former president of the united states accords has been shocks. uh he donald trump, himself says uh that he was shot uh by a bullet. i quote him here. i was charged with the bullet the used the upper part of my ear. others say that the bullet hits um his tele problem through
3:04 am
and the adjust the splint or kind of cuts his ear, but that's definitely something we will learn later. i mean, i don't think it's too dramatic, say that donald trump was truly inches away from day there. i mean, what does this mean for the country if this genuinely was an assassination attempt on former president trump and also for the republican front runner in the upcoming election dice actually, i know that's exactly right. what you're saying. it's not only the form of a presence or a former president is the frontrunner of for the republican party and his nomination is just the hours away. the republican national convention is about or was meant to start tomorrow morning and he was supposed or is supposed to give his beats on thursday. donald trump,
3:05 am
to accept the nomination. everything is in the air. we don't know what happened. we got many, many, a security alerts we of course hear our team from washington. i myself. we're supposed to fly to milwaukee early tomorrow morning. reset to see what is happening there. but this a session, a assessing nation to attend, is definitely one of the worst things that could happen in this very polarized america. and i think we all have to get pre pad, the more political, political violence and social instability, a lives just a career. and some people are worried that donald trump kind of might use that for his campaigning. i mean, for me personally, this is the moment to stop speculating again. it's just like inches a he has just been inches away from, from being killed by the i find it quite interesting that the sitting president of
3:06 am
the joe biden, the kind of stopped all come painting because we are of course, in the midst of a presidential election campaign and also president biden told his staff not to comment on this s s s as the nation attend on social media. you know, so i want to come back to you in just a moment, but 1st of all, let's take a look at what some of the witnesses i witnesses of the shooting said, who are standing directly behind, present. don't know. it's really kind of for us for a 2nd kind of taken in realize what actually happened. and then everyone in the bleachers we are often tried to hover the kids. yeah, we heard if you could hear like ricky sang through the bleachers, almost like maybe software sitting also believe your area. so we try to cover all the kids that were near. there were actually extra people around us that jump on top of the kids also to protect the kids and they cut their self into like
3:07 am
a cell and which is pretty cool. so there was no doubt right from the start. what was going on. people are questionable at 1st and then everybody but he did reach up and drove it here. and then on the stage. and as we just heard from our bureau chief there donald trump has said his ear was hit by a billet. we can see in this picture up close lot on trump's ear antique. this is when he was dragged away by the secret service officials. and you know, thanks so much for joining us again. let's talk a little bit about the security details and hire this actually happened in the 1st place. what does security look like out of raleigh like this, especially such a big one. and how could it have happened that someone potentially got a gun into the venue?
3:08 am
we are hearing reports that the shooter was outside of the venue. tell me a little bit about that. walk us through it. yeah, i mean this is definitely christian. the everybody is asking right now. so this event took place on the bottle of farm show locations. so that's a huge venue and everybody gets really screen very carefully before you go to such a riley, i myself is being had many relatives. donald trump released job. i didn't relatives coming to harris, but relatives in the, in the day. so the re, clinton valley, send you a really good check really thoroughly. and as we don't lose the tv, people carry a lot of gear. you know, we have cameras here tripods, we all have to go through these metal detectors, and then we have to put down the gear, then there are coming dogs to smell. is there any explosives? we have to leave the parameter and then come back off to a couple of hours. so security is really high. so this is really
3:09 am
a huge question. how this could happen. some people say that the, the shoulder wasn't in the area but a shot from a i would side. and i think this is more likely than him being in the venue. i just actually got started scheduling, a press statement from the secret service and they say, i quote them here. a suspected sort of fired multiple shots toward the stage from an elevated position outside of the riley. when you suggested we were talking about right, it would have been very, very difficult to get a gun into the venue. but shooting from the outside of course, was obviously a possible. and he was able to harm the president and killed one spectator and 2 other people are very, very seriously injured. it's absolutely unbelievable. and, and like we've spoken about already,
3:10 am
this has just happened days before the republican convention. i mean, what kind of impacts will this make or not? this is an incredibly time situation in the us already right now. is this incident going to make things even worse of the country is sold polarized. anyhow, and you know, we always have to bear in mind that in the united states we have more weapons of and people. so many, many americans have a couple of veterans or, or own a couple of weapons. and of course many of them are a trump supporters. um, so this is definitely a kind of for you, it's a friends and people all really aware that in this very polarized situation, more really in stability made a car over the next couple of days and weeks. and you know, what really strikes me when donald trump, of gods injure then, you know,
3:11 am
of course was brought down by the secret service, which was they were immediately at him. but when he got up, he raised his fist and also when they walked him to this a big car, we all know these images from other attendants or takes on, on state ahead of states or maybe also for movies. normally they just kind of go into the car and being broadaway being brought to safety because you never know is a more shoulders in the area. but it's donald from this blood in his face and raised his fist and apparently said, fight, fight, fight. so this of course was a message to his supporters and we shall see to what that might lead. and i'm sure that will know diets the use in his future campaigning. what's the reaction be like to this in the us?
3:12 am
so uh we just uh, heard uh, joe biden talking here he stopped all this containing, he gave this little statement on a camera while he was apparently just in church when he learned that donald trump of was a shot ads. he said that and that i found that quite interesting, he referred to him as donald's, not donald trump or the former president. so it's a very kind of familial approach. and he said that you will be trying to reach out to him and that he's a once a to talk to him. and i'm also a then he also put out a statement like later joe biden did, and i quote him here as well. he joe biden said there is no place for this kind of violence in america. we must, tonight is one nation to condemn it. so he's definitely he and his staff there definitely definitely be aware how dangerous the situation is and how possible it
3:13 am
is that some of donald from hard core supporters might be all kind of em job buys this as the nation's s. s. s a nation attempts. so many people really try now to calm down the situation and the, the pose and the email, so kindly just of slowly pull ringing. but i'm, i already, when i checked a twitter or other social media outlets, i also see the quite the opposite that people use this moment to blame a joe biden, a for this as a nation, a tim so, so it's, it's going to be um, some very crucial hours and probably days before we really see where this might lead to and i'm sure this image don't some having blood spots in his face, raising the fist. this will be one of the major image images we will see over the course of the next months until november 5th until election day. yeah,
3:14 am
certainly seems like this has the potential to reach for the division across and already very thomas united states as pull our washington bureau chief. thank you so much for all your updates. that is our and you, as a reminder of the story that we've been following for a former president, donald trump has been injured in what the secret service is calling and a parents assess the nation that time. a gunman and fired shot at trump, campaign riley, and pennsylvania. oh, sorry to say they have killed the shooter and that a member of the crowd is dead. and will be following that story for you as it on falls across the next few hours on with any updates that we do receive. but that's all for nice from me and the whole team here in berlin and our team in washington as well. of course. thank you so
3:15 am
much for watching state. you're in the dream of revolution in 1979 dictates has somoza was supposed to have that changed my life. the people who for a sara society i imagine to me would change the world. tens of thousands of messages from all over the world wanted to help reconstruct the country. this mission became the dream. it was simply a spirit of optimism where we encouraged each other. so many things were suddenly
3:16 am
imagining.
