the play. richardson, thank you so much for joining us. we'll be in, in the united states at the republican national convention where last night, former president donald trump made his 1st public appearances being wounded in an assassination attempt. the party has now officially confirmed from past their presidential candidates. and trump has chosen his running mate for november the election. 39 year old ohio senator j. d vance is trumped to pick for vice presidents. the former silicon valley venture capitalist rose to fame for his best selling memoir about growing up in rural working class america. he had been a vocal critic of trump, but has since become a loyal ally and dw washington bureau chief and as pull reports from that

convention in milwaukee a stolen from so many nation as the presidential candidate on the 1st day of the republican national convention, plus expected this hopeless wasn't the question he would pick for vice president. the excitement from the delegates was strong when they learned it would be j d v. i think it's amazing. i like them a lot. i think he's very smart. i think he's got a wide range of popularity and i think it will attract a lot of people that may be traveling younger. that may be trump would have had a hard time with it. so i think it's wonderful with this was upbringing that he had in the appalachian mountains, regardless of just it. he is the common man that became wash, you know, went to washington rather than he was not a product of washington. that's why, like i say it's or advance is a man. i think it's perfect for the role. we need someone with you in vigor in the

republican party such as myself. and i'm glad that donald j. trump has decided to take a young senator and make him his v p. i have nothing but great hopes for him as our vice president. i personally liked the santas or mario rubio, but what i care is that trump gets re elected. there is more younger conservatives now and there is ever been there is, you know, people are rejecting the work liberal ideology at levels they never seen. so i think having a younger person to represent that group is the best thing that can ever happen. well, i mean j events, let's face it is a lot like donald trump. maybe he's a logical successor. go tell me, would be 78 years old. is even spec, the white house, this would keep turbulence just a heartbeat away from the presidency. for many people around the world, this scenario raises concerns as vans, is strongly against supporting ukraine who poses foreign aid and takes
2:04 pm
a tough stance on the wrong could serves many of the members of the policy don't share because he's yeah, he's conservative, he's got a come from the family, the way he started from the bottom is worked his way up to the top. he's got young children, so you understand the value that american me today? well, thomas gift is the director of the center on us politics at the university college london. i earlier asked him to tell us more about what we should really know about j defense. but it's great to be with you. claire. thank so much for having me. you know, i really do think that j vance is the kind of pick you make when you're already confident in your likelihood of winning. she doesn't balance out the ticket, demographically, like maybe a woman or a minority would. but i think fans might help secure the swing state of ohio, but trump already one there in 20162020. so i really think that this is largely trump doubling down on his mega populace nationalism. in contrast to mike pence,
2:05 pm
who is trump's running mate in 2026 i. j, the dance is much more ideologically aligned. he's less sort of in the pack of the establishment, so to speak. he's the young, edited obviously, and he does have a terrific background coming from very humble roots, moving all the way up to law school and it's at the be elected to congress. so it's an interesting choice. it is indeed are there areas where his policies differ from those of trump? is there any where were we might see wrists, or is he really potentially a successor as that one fan put in? so i really do think that he might be more as seen as kind of an error parent for trump, obviously with his vice presidential tech. trump is kind of thinking 4 years from now when he won't be eligible to run again. who might be able to take the mag a torch? i really think that that is judy that it is interesting though. clarity, look at the evolution of j. the balance is thinking over the years,
2:06 pm
he obviously was very critical of trump, dating back to 2016 was seen as more of a moderate, someone who was kind of the darling of the mainstream media. as trump ism began to take hold. i think he saw an opportunity and since then he's really been almost in lock step with trump in terms of policies. as you've mentioned, we've now got to white man on the ticket. who do you think j. d. vance is intended to appeal to what does this decision tell us about the trump campaigns, strategy and exactly which voters they are trying to win over? well, the one thing that we know about donald trump is that he doubles down on his base. he did that in 2016. he did that in 2020. he's doing that again in 2024. he really wants to make sure the base turns out. and i think that this to galvanize is that what it's not going to appeal to is a lot of moderate republicans. i think established republicans,
2:07 pm
trump really isn't making much of an effort here to widen his circle of support. that's always been a concern that trump has a ceiling in terms of the number of voters who will actually go to the polls and help them, but certainly for the core mag adverse, so to speak. i think he is certainly going to be a popular and what am on a evan jellico voters? do you think he will be a popular candidate among them? a stick should be not so much in comparison to my pen. so really was a text that was designed almost exclusively to appeal to evan gel christian voters . but the same time, if you look at 20162020 of jellico motors came out for trump in large numbers. obviously trump pronounced 3 supreme court justices, which helped to overturn roe v wade. i think he certainly got a feather in his cap for that with, with a jellicoe christian. so again, trump may be thinks that he's already got that demographic locked up. well,
2:08 pm
thank you. so much for joining us for their insights. today i just political scientist, thomas guest. we appreciate your time. it's nice turning out his mother news and the newly elected european parliament just meeting for it's 1st session since pulls on big games for the far right. their members may have about a quarter of the 720 seats based in strasbourg, france. the parliament has just re elected roberto. i met sola as president. european law makers overwhelmingly voted in favor of giving the conservative politician from malta, another 2 and a half year term as speaker of the chamber. so how easy was this re election for president? that's all i asked. are brussels bureau cheese? alexandra from nomine, who is in strasbourg, covering the story for us. it was indeed clear and easy when for robots, how much sold out. when we look at the numbers, she has called so 562 votes in favor. so i have very comfortable
2:09 pm
victory. a big majority and she has been seen as a pragmatic leader here in the european parliament and somebody who is a promising to have an absolute fear of debates and respects. she was faced with a corruption scandal. he and the european parliament. and she seems to handle that very well. introducing a new code of conduct for all the lawmakers to prevent scandals like them from happening again. so we've heard that some selections. we seen big games for the far right in parliament. how much influence do you think they will have in, in this new thing? well, we expect the far right to have for rob the limited to an influence on the decision . so if the you are a pin parliament and that is because they were not able to be able to unite and to form one big file right group,
2:10 pm
now we have 3 such groups in the parliament. and so they, i has defense positions on the european union, on the integration on your ups stance on ukraine, on russia. and that is why we have those suite groups. none of them has the blocking minority. however, it's also true that the european parliament has shifted to the right with the center riots you appear in people spots you being the biggest group in the parliament. and their leaders have, has already indicated that they would be willing to work together with some individual lawmakers from that far right, as long as their respective rule of law and support to ukraine. so the big question here, of course, is whether the set top, the new set, top of that you appear in, putnam and we'll put limits to the so called to co, don't send me to this refusal
2:11 pm
a by main screen potties to work together with the far right and said to give them any chance of getting any high level positions in the institutions. so football news now and england's team manager derrick south gate has announced his departure after a 2nd consecutive defeat in the european championship finals. south gave set in a statement that sundays final in berlin again, spain would be his final game as england manager of the 53 year old has been england's most successful manager in terms of consistent performances at major tournaments in his 8 years in charge. he managed to england at 4 major tournaments including reaching the world cup, semi finals in 2018. so we can talk all things, garrett, se a partner with tom galloway from dw sports. tom to this announcement comes of surprise to know. i didn't think it's a surprise. i think it's kind of
2:12 pm
a shot in the sense of basically the size made piece of news for english football. and i don't think one could say it was a surprise, particularly off to this tournament. and, you know, obviously got of southgate did taking into the final and in, you know, the numbers that you mentioned that he's, he's 10 years ago. and coach has been such a successful one. but i think particularly at least tournament where the criticism of his style of play, if his game management has been so vivid and, and, and personal. and, you know, even though he did have the ne, confirmed backing of the f a and is very popular among his players. um, but the guy said that they were gonna lead up to go southgate to decide on his own future. and i think um, you know, because of the atmosphere, the noise around the team during this tournament is position this company and yeah, i guess, i guess i'm confused with, with everything we've just heard. what exactly was the criticism there of, of his personal style. yeah. well, i'm go, southgate was, was a defender as a player and he sets up a team and to defend. and, you know, england have such
2:13 pm
a deep talent to they have a squad of such attacking superstars and players who used to playing under a very different coaches who have very different tactical styles. who i think, you know, found it difficult at many times to adapt, to go to south gate tactical system. and then, you know, there is what it's like to watch and, you know, it's assigned to a fasting for dynamic attacking, exciting football. gather southgate start of play isn't necessarily gonna queens that fast, and that's been behind it of the criticism, not just one me. i guess you could say that wasn't on display in the final, i'm afraid. is it too early to talk about his legacy? how do you think he's going to be, remember? i didn't mean those manager. you mentioned some of the numbers. i know i've got a statement here from the c o, the english f, a ma putting on who is, who said drawing attention to just work. southgate has achieved as a manager now modeling of rise. the in the 25 tournaments post 9066, but even one the world cup. before that of southgate took charge,
2:14 pm
england had won 7 know, count matches. i mean he's full tournaments in charge. they've one knowing, so really the numbers are incredible. he's achievements as a coach at the results that he's been able to get have been fantastic. they've just do a stop show of course of actually lifting as i say because and this is the 2nd final in success. and as you mentioned of european championships in which england have gone home intended. oh thank you so much for joining us with that. that is tom kennedy from dw sports, very much appreciate you here in the studio to. and after celebrating spain's euro 2024 victory spanish fans have even more to cure about a french superstar to in and bought a husband officially presented as a rail, madrid player. and bobby receive a roaring welcome to the club and i packed out santiago, benedetto, stadium,
