i'm clear, richardson welcome to the show. we begin in the united states as the republican national convention where last night, former president donald trump played his 1st public appearance since being wounded in this house a nation attempts. the party has now officially confirmed trump as their presidential candidates, and from has chosen his running mate for november's election. 39 year old ohio sen, j. d vance, is from pick for vice president. the former silicon valley venture capitalist rose to fame for his best selling memoir about growing up in rural working class america . he had been a vocal critic of trump, but has since become a loyal ally of the big do you have the use washington bureau chief in his pull reports from the convention in milwaukee? don't com, so many nation is a presidential candidate on the 1st day of the republican national convention. what's expected?
3:02 pm
the focus was on the question he would pick for vice president. the excitement from the delegates was strong when they learned it would be j. d v. i think it's amazing . i like them a lot. i think he's very smart. i think he's got a wide range of popularity and i think it will attract a lot of people that maybe try these younger. that may be, trump would have had a hard time. and so i think it's wonderful with this was upbringing that he had in the appalachian mountains, regardless of just it. he is the common man that became wash, you know, went to washington rather than he was not a product of washington. that's why i like them. say to advance is a man. i think it's perfect for the role. we need someone with you in vigor in the republican party such as myself, and i'm glad that donald j trump had side to take a young senator and making these v p. i'm nothing but great hopes for him as our

vice president. i personally liked the santas or mario rubio, but what i care is that trump gets re elected. there is more younger conservatives now than there's ever been there is, you know, people are rejecting the work liberal ideology at levels. they never seemed so i think having a younger person to represent that group is the best thing that can ever happen. well, i mean, j events. let's face it, he's a lot like donald trump. maybe he's a logical successor. go to him would be 78 years old. if even spec the white house, this would keep trade events just a heartbeat away from the presidency. for many people around the world. this scenario raises concerns as vans, is strongly against supporting your brand new poses foreign age and takes a tough stance on iraq concerns. many of the members of the party don't share because he's yeah, he's conservative. he's got a come from

a family. the way he started from the bottom is work to the way up to the top. he's got young children, so you understand the value that american me today. now a number of german lawmakers are attending the republican national convention in milwaukee. i'm drawing out by one of them mentioned huck verde is a member of the german parliament for chancellor. all i felt as center left s p d welcome. i'd like to ask 1st, why you were attending this convention. oh, it's always good to know what's going on the other side of the pond, and particularly in an election year. we would like to know, of course, who could be president, but also, even if it doesn't work out for the republicans who is in charge and that party. so this is a good meeting for everybody was who was engaged in the republican party today. so what are your impressions so far as is a bit of a fact finding mission for you? um, if trump is to win the election in november, are you getting
3:05 pm
a sense from this convention what effect that could have on transatlantic relations? well, 1st of all, in the interior of the, as i'm here is super big thinking of if he wins most people here, i think he will, when they were pretty confident as to the debate with joe biden. but after this success a nation attempt a last weekend and the people think it is a short thing for, for the republicans to win. mm hm. and, and if they do indeed, when it does, do you already have a sense of how that would affect relations with germany as well? well probably, um, the sense of, uh, uh, the ideal security in europe is an issue with or without the republican president, that particular, with these republican president, it will be a more, more pressing issue to get our security interest. but $6.00 self supporting ukraine
3:06 pm
. the issue of security in us will be one of the big issues between the united states and in germany and europe generally. indeed, security will be top of the agenda here in europe on ax you've actually written about trumps new picked for vice president of jd events. you've said, quote a, he's a bad choice for ukraine, and us national security. tell us more of what you meant by that. what the solution is moving is, i would say historically seen the united states as an old thing but, but in these particular times it would be really, it could be a big problem for us, us as the west of the political west, how to get engaged and how to support you crane, and i don't believe j. d van story telling that it is either the interest of united states to go out or the interest of you or to defend you create. i think it's in the national interest of the united states also combined with you to support the ukraine because it will be problem not only for you is russia succeeds with this

attack on the crime, but also to the united states. i think that's a particular misunderstanding on, on the republican side at this time. and so, given that mismatch of republican priorities and those of the german government, how, how would you go ahead working with a, a new trump administration a little cause it's a choice of the united states citizens, right. it's not the insurance of your paints or others, but once this government would be empowered, we would have to deal with them like with any other government, but it's the government of the most powerful country in the world. but it is not enough to be just disgusted by but politically disgusted because uh, we may not agree on, on major issues. we have to do the best thing we could do, but we were, we are the advice for, for not only germany, but for all you and 10 countries is to, to get our own sovereignty going to invest and our security invest out in our

european integration. that's a good thing for us, not only with republic and the wife, as particularly with the republican and the white us. and just before i let you go, i'd like to ask a briefly, if you could, how you think this attempted assassination of trump is going to affect the selection cycle. we will see that in the coming almost foremost to the election at this point, i would say it is a big support for, for donald trump. um, i think it's an advantage if the election was today. it would be in the interim. but the next 4 months, a lot of things will happen. um, so it's very, very difficult to say how it is going to work out in the next weeks. it's going to be a close race, i believe, to the end. there are lots of issues that are not so good. we don't even know who is going to be canada on the democratic side for sure. so things won't change in the next weeks or so. but at this time, it, lisa republicans believe it was a big advantage for him to survive this. the tech. thank you so much for joining us
3:09 pm
onto the news that isn't 1830 member of germany's been just talking. we appreciate your time very much. thanks for having me. by to now the newly elected european parliament is meeting for it's 1st session. since polls is all big games for the far right. the members make up about a quarter of the 720 seats. headquartered in strasbourg, france. the parliament has just re elected roberta, and that's the last president. european lawmakers overwhelmingly voted in favor of giving that conservative politician from malta another 2 and a half years term, a speaker of the chamber. so how easy was this re election for president met sola, i put that question to our brussels bureau chief alexander phenomena who was in strasburg, are covering the story for us. it was indeed clear and easy when for robots, how much solar. when we look at the numbers, she has god, so 562 votes in favor. so i have very comfortable victory,

a big majority. and she has been seen as a pragmatic leader here in the european parliament and somebody who is promising to have an absolute fear of debates and respects. she was faced with a corruption scandal here in the european parliament. and she seems to handle that very well. introducing a new code of conduct for all the lawmakers to prevent scandals like them from happening. again. we've heard that some selections. we seen big games for the far right in parliament. how much influence do you think they will have in, in this new thing? well, we expect the far rides to have for rob the limited to an influence on the decisions . hopefully you are in parliament and that is because they were not able to be able to unite and to form one big file right group. now we have 3 such groups in the

paula mind, and so they have different positions on the european union, on the integration on your ups stance on you claim on russia. and that is why we have those suite groups. none of them has the blocking minority. however, it's also true that the european parliament has shifted to the right with the center riots you a p and people spots you being the biggest group in the parliament. and their leaders have, has already indicated that they would be willing to work together with some individual lawmakers from that far right. as long as they respect the rule of law and support to ukraine. so the big question here, of course, is whether the set top, the new set, top of that you appear in, putnam and we'll put limits to the so called to co, don't send me to this refusal
