a thank you. oh then we'll go back now to our top story, the humans top court today ruling that israel's occupation of the palestinian territories is illegal. let's go now to jerusalem. our special correspondent, abraham. she's on that story for us. so i have what has been the reaction from israeli and palestinian officials as we've heard a perhaps, and surprisingly palestinian officials commend this ruling. we heard the palestinian foreign minister monkeys say that this with this ruling, the i, c, j has fulfilled its moral obligation and duty, and that according to this ruling other countries should. now i'm paraphrasing the quote, provide no aid, no money, no complicity, no arms and no trade with israel. and that's something that will be seeing palestinian officials and those who advocate on behalf of the palestinian cause argue in the coming days of this ruling should be used to apply more pressure on
7:16 pm
israel. on the other side, we've heard from the is really prime minister, unequivocally condemning this a ruling. and he said that the west bank in east jerusalem are part of the jewish peoples, historical homeland referring to the west bank. and it's a biblical name today and scenario, and that is the thing. he said that the jewish people are not conquerors of their own land. so you see a coup unsurprising. we pull are opposite reactions to this uh, the ruling. and it's difficult to see what the middle ground could be, especially that recently these really connects. it has also passed a resolution rejecting the 2 state solution. but this reaction from the is really side to the i said you ruling is part of a pattern to how these really government has chosen to react to. i said you ruins also with regards to what's, what is going on and gaza, israel's war. and guys,
7:17 pm
although the icey g looking into the issue of east jerusalem and the west bank actually pre dates of the war. so is today's court decision? is it likely to have any consequences on this really occupation plan? a well consecutive is really government's has been supportive of settlement expansion, right wing and left wing this particular government. benjamin netanyahu, whose government has particular, has been particularly supportive and has expanded the settlements. but it'd be expansion if settlements has by no means a new phenomenon. it has. however, according to rights groups accelerated since october 7th, if trooper 7th attacks and the war in gaza. and with what we've been hearing from is really officials today. it does not seem that this ruling is acting as a deterrent or that it's somehow, you know, giving them
7:18 pm
a moment of pause to rethink that policy. i think what could be different is what a, as a, as the impulse posting in a foreign minister said that this could perhaps proceed other countries to treat israel differently and to apply more pressure to try and somehow um, you know, not perhaps slow down the expansion of settlements in the, in the occupied territories, the west bank and east jerusalem abraham in jerusalem at the latest. are you? thank you. a court in russia had sentenced a wall street journal reporter to 16 years in prison. after 3 days of closed door hearings, the court in the city of because our universe found evan hurst could be guilty of spot. he was accused of following the orders of the us central intelligence agency to gather information about a russian factory producing tanks for the, for a new crane. the wall street journal and the white house have denied the charge was

on joined mail by anton toya north sky. he's the moscow bureau chief for the new york times. he joins me tonight from right here in berlin and told it's good to see, you know, you're not only a fellow journalist, you're also a friend of evan. gosh, could which, what went through your mind that they wouldn't when you heard the verdict in the sentence here of 16 years in prison? well, look, those um, for starters, those uh charges you described. we've heard from the russian authorities are, are just absolutely absurd. so it's clear that evan was doing nothing but his job in the pottery and berg last year. a really important job really is one of the only american journalists working in russia at that time. what went through my mind today, you know, it was um,
7:20 pm
it was both expected and just outragious. at the same time. you know, we know that the russian court system is not independent. we know that when cases like this come before court in russia, there's pretty much always a conviction. there's pretty much all the ways a half the prison term. so and i both knew that this was going to happen, but then you stop and think about the fact that someone can get 16 years in prison just for doing their job. is that true and it listed it? the bottles to mind is, is there a reason tonight a few years to worry for its safety, it and his health's as well. there has been from the very beginning from, from the moment he was arrested on march 29th uh, 2023. um, you know, uh, i think i've been in touch with him. you can write letters to him. a lot of people have been actually writing letters to him,
7:21 pm
which i know he's appreciated very much. and in the responses i've gotten, and it's been clear that his spirits have, have remained high as far as that can be imagined when you're in a russian prison. you know, he has this incredible strength of spirit. and um, obviously the, the physical conditions he faces, the isolation you know, is, is pretty much unimaginable. i think, for those of us who have never been in that kind of situation. but at the same time, i still am confident that he can get through this. and isn't there also reason to think that the russians will not allow anything to happen to evan? i mean, there's been talk expectations that he could be swap for a russian citizen being held in a western prison. how likely do you think that it's as well as such a prisoner swap, the e it is the most realistic way out that he can be released. i mean,
7:22 pm
i want to say again, he needs to be released. he shouldn't be released right now because he was just doing his job and, and, and, and these charges are absurd. but, uh, the, the russian government has said, including survey lever on the for, administered this week. that the us and russian authorities are in touch about a possible exchange. the us government has also said repeatedly throughout evans arrest that they are working on getting him out. so that's the kind of thing you know, we're waiting for. but at the same time, to the extent that any negotiations are happening, they're happening very much behind closed doors. and you wouldn't even have a, you have a lot in common. i'm a journalist, you've covered the same ground, similar life experience as russian born americans. do you sometimes, you know, think about what does happen to him and think wow, you know,
7:23 pm
that could have been that could have easily been me. yeah, i mean, so have it, and i our, our, our friends and, and, and, and we became close when we were both based in moscow and uh, in, in prior years as, as reporters. so he was born in the west. i was born in russia. we both grew up as, as americans in, in, in russian speaking household. so yes, that is one thing we have in common and look, you know, this, this kind of arrest obviously, that it's, it's something that has had been happening to russian journalists for many years. and uh, so it was always, i think, somewhere in the back of your mind when you're working russian as a mistake, you know, you face risks when you're doing it and, and uh, so yeah, so, so i think that that has gone through probably pretty much everyone's mind if
7:24 pm
you're in some way to barely josh, before i let you go to be the defendants. and do you think it is a deliberate and message to all for in general is from russia. you know, this is a dangerous place. don't come here. um it it's, it's definitely evans arrest. uh, i think part of the, the, the a message there and throughout has been uh to, to, to, to, to just to create this chilling effect for journalism and russia in general. also for, for an correspondence but, but at the same time, you know, i think people will continue to do what they can to report there. um and, and just because it's such an important thing to do and so on until you're not schema scale bureau chief for the new york times, anton, we appreciate you sharing your thoughts with us tonight. thank you. thank you. the
