eastern economist expected month over month of two tenths of 8% and year-over-year at 2.9% were also looking ahead to retail sales on thursday followed by ppi and housing data on friday let's talk about it with brad mcadam ltd founding partner back with us this morning. great to see you. maria: thank you for being with us. i want to get your take on whether you think the fed will cut rates before europe cuts rates, the bank of england you live in london and yet the european union expected to cut rates. a lot of people feel like that's weakening faster than the u.s. >> it is but not fast enough for the bank of england to be really aggressive, the job vacancies are coming down, that is a good sign and it will enable the bank of england to cut but not as fast as and to zepeda. there is two plus million people on the sidelines that are not working that is a big number in the uk. that has to change, right now the foreign workers are 20%, 21%

of the employment and the uk up considerably from brexit. the problem is in the challenge, their job vacancies but a lot of people sitting on the couch and there has to be wage growth and asking to push up inflation they have to attract workers. maria: look at rates, ten year yield back about 4% i've been watching the yield creep up, federal reserve president tom barkin and boston fed chief susan collins indicated that they want the decline in inflation to continue but they want for their inflation progress in services before cutting rates, your thoughts? >> i think services are to be sticky in terms of inflation, goods are coming down and the other problem with rates the fed and the boe can cut as much as they want but a trillion bonds have to be sold in the market so i think there is supply issues. you can have shorter or lower

short-term rates but if european governments as well as the u.s. government have to keep borrowing at an outrageous pace that's going to keep the curve higher. >> my question you have a lot of same dynamics going on give inflation can be dumber than expected, relatively tight labor market and i'm surprised the imf said it could be positive this year and everyone so negative for so long it seems like they diverted recession in england. i'm pretty bullish. they trade cheap versus the u.s. >> there still challenges in much like the u.s. a lot of this is government stimulus and the economy did better than the uk and eu and germany and they were expected they had them ranked at the bottom of the list for 2023 and they outperform that but a

lot of that was government stimulus and a lot of wage growth in the government sector. with 900,000 people, 900,000 job vacancies that is a good sign but a lot of people are on the sideline. maria: how does your portfolio change in light of all of this. >> i think after play it safe, defensive it seems counterintuitive but it is a recovery but not a robust recovery. much as a sugar high based on government spending just like in the u.s., i would be cautious and i don't expect a robust recovery, the market is counting on rate cuts in europe and in the u.s. but i don't think i'll come as quickly as the market wants and wages still have to go higher to get people off the sideline. maria: do you think once the money goes away all of the stimulus goes away that we could

see an issue for market, that was the issue that jamie dimon brought up to me, he said all of this money sloshing around but that's going to end at some point people are not what you feel as confident that they have the money in the bank. >> there's 430 billion of excess savings from the covid handouts and student loan relief. that is good and you should see consumer spending and government spending is higher and government consumption is higher than personal consumptions. in spite of the money in savings right now. it is a sugar high that cannot continue. i think we will see the on both sides of the lancet. maria: we're going to show you the british pound, you mentioned the wage growth less than expected in fourth quarter, the bank of england to wait before cutting interest rates but the uk economy underperforms the u.s. because the government policy. it is all about the fiscal

stimulus. >> that you have a labor of government coming in toward the end of the year. if you have a conservative government that is really governing like a center-left big government spender type management and labor coming up. it is contrary to the rest of europe where you see a move to the right. if you see it rebelling against big government say is. in the uk there managing like a center-left government and i have labor around the corner, it's going to get worse before it gets better i would not bet on the uk in the next five years. maria: that's a big statement. you mentioned the sugar high. i'm curious of that expensive difference in the messaging that were getting from corporate america. i'm listening to earnings calls in here anything like weak demand you hearing operational efficiency the highest in 20

years. are they seeing something that were not, you are hearing the government saying the rate of inflation is coming down isn't the sugar high that the corporations are seeing and planning for. >> there's so much money being spent every day and other government program or grants the so-called inflation reduction act. you have so much excess capital, the government has never been a good allocator of capital. and let the private market doing that three of a massive spending which is good for the economy in the short term or parts of the economy, the favor industries. it's not sustainable. maria: look at the charts look at the nasdaq in the last six months, the dow industrial, record after record, would you sell into this. >> definitely had to look the underlying cause of all the growth, government spending.
