6:06 am
biden is calling the rule a step toward combating corruption and partisan interference to ensure civil servants are able to focus on the more important task at hand, delivering for the american people. this what is joe biden is claim claiming as he puts the rule in place that he can't fire anybody. trump wants to fire the deep state. >> he wants to get their votes, wants to be more confident of getting the votes in washington, d.c., the company town for the democratic party. let's not be too naive. one of the reasons why we have this huge federal deficit is because joe biden engages in borrowing money via the federal government to buy votes in effect to keep the democrats in power. maria: what do you think, lee? >> there's been so many commentaries out there especially rfk junior saying
6:07 am
actually biden's the threat to democracy, he's the one that's stacking the institutions here. we should be more concerned about joe biden than donald trump. i think it's fascinating, joe biden set up this whole narrative that it is donald trump that's going to have retribution if he gets into office and so he's able to cut all these policies. donald trump is saying himself, he sid the best retribution i have is going to be success and he says you're saying i'm going to be a dictator, i'm going to be a dictator on d day one to do two things. they're creating a narrative, not necessarily the truth of what donald trump is all about. maria: that's right. that's what they do a the time, set up the idea that trump is the threat to democracy as they try to pack the supreme court, that's try to take his name off the ballots and they do everything possible that is a threat to democracy. >> that's right. and interestingly enough, the polling now suggests that republicans are as concerned as as democrats about the threat to

time if 22 months the other day. the inflation data has been hot. next week's cpi is expected to go up from 3.2% up to 3.5%. so you had the comments yesterday, chris waller gave a speech in new york last wednesday night where he said in his hhis mind the fed needs to y on hold. bostik is pe penciling in one c. larry sommers says he thinks the the fed's next move will be a hike, not a cut. you look at that collectively and the market's consensus view at the beginning of the year that we're going to see six or seven cuts over the course of the year, i mean, that's got to be out the window and to a significant degree this 28% rally we've seen in stocks over the last five months or so, i think it's predicated on the concept that the fed was going to be extraordinarily doveish here and doesn't seem like
6:16 am
that's going to be the case. maria: by the way, before larry sommers said potentially a rate hike, jim grant said it on this program a couple months ago saying we're not there, the federal reserve may turn around and say we need to hike rates so that would be a major disappointment for the market can and i'm wondering as an investor what you want to do, do you want to get out of the way now that there's the massive debate that there won't be rate cuts this year because if the market is expecting three rate cuts and we don't get any what kind of sizable selloff might you expect? >> we were expecting a barbell shape performance for the s&p. we thought we would get out of the gate in pretty good shape. we thought there would be significant chop over summer and the fall rea lated to federal reserve uncertainty early and later in the year election related uncertainty. we think we'll get a powerful post election rally to record highs once we get all that
6:17 am
nonsense behind us. but given the fact that you've had a 10% rally in the s&p so far this year and a 28% rally since the end of last october, stocks in our view are ahead of themselves. what we think will happen is a rolling correction if you will. the so called mag 7 are up 99% over the last 15 months. the forgotten 493 are up by 22%. 22%. that 77% performance and balance is not sustainable. it needs to be corrected. what we think is going to happen is we're going to get some love for the domestic large cap value names, domestic small cap growth names and international names which frankly have been left for dead over the last 15 months and some of the froth comes off from the mag 7 names. maria: that makes a lot of sense to me. and i'd like to see the small caps get some love as well. when you see this market
6:18 am
broadening out, you have more confidence that in fact it is sustainable long-term. if it's just the magnificent seven up 99% and as you say the remaining 493 in the s&p 500 not seeing that kind of performance, you question the sustainability of it so how does the march jobs report play into all of this? i want to bring john lonski in on this. john, the march jobs numbers out in two hours' time, economists expect 200,000 jobs added to the economy with the unemployment rate steady at 3.9%. this could be a market mover this morning. john, react to what phil is saying that, look, he's expecting a rolling correction here. your thoughts? >> i think phil is exactly right. to get a rate cut, you have to have a disinflation fary slowing of the economy that would include a softer labor market. we can't have payrolls growing in excess of 250,000 jobs per month and expect to have a rate
6:19 am
cut. we can't have wage growth staying well above 4 be% and get a -- 4% and get a rate growth. we have to see slower jobs growth, see that head down to maybe fewer than 150,000 jobs per month and we to see edging up of the unemployment rate. if this employment report comes in on the strong side, that would significantly a reduce the odds favoring a june rate. maria: what do you think terms of a june rate cut, phil? >> there's two chances of a june rate cut, slim and none and slim just died so the earliest we would expect to see the fed cut rates would be in july. i think john's spot-on. just look at the data this week. the adp numbers hit an eight month high. the claims numbers, 212,000. the jolts n numbers have been steady. if today's jobs report is hot, that adds fuel to the fire.
6:20 am
they will wait for the data to eventually cool. maria: we're waiting to see what happens in terms of inflation of it's elevated with oil where it is, phil, what do you make of $90 a barrel brent, crude oil, $83 a barrel. do you want to buy oil stocks? is there a trade here or is this an overall negative for the market and the economy. >> there is a trade. with crude in the mid-60s back in december we thought the combination of increased geopolitical risk and the fact our strategic petroleum reserve is about half, we never refilled it after the president took it down by half they calendar a '22, that combination we felt would take wti prices up into the 80 to $90-barrel neighborhood over the course of the year and as you just said, we're at $86 now, four months into the year.
