twomac walk back take a look at futures, the beginning of the last trading week of may after markets were closed yesterday for memorial day holloway jen holliday, a fractional gain at the start of trading that one duster of nine, the nasdaq of 84, markets are mixed for the second quarter, so far it's been a rough one for markets, dow industrial down about 2%, the nasdaq is up 3% and s&p upon percent, the markets have been able to recover a bit in the second quarter since the early days of the quarter, the bahnsen group managing partner and the author of full-time work in the meeting of life, david bahnsen is with me, great to see you, you see evaluations are the number one challenge for market, tell me about that give us your outlook for the year.

>> let's take the different scenarios that could be difficult for markets, tough economy, the fed tightening more than people think, even a recession and the worst case scenario further out. all of those things may not happen, you may not get any of the bad news, earnings growth may come and were projected in it may come in a tiny bit above, the problem is all of that is already placed in, and the recession pricing, earnings growth priced in, fed not only hiking rates but beginning the cut rates later in the year priced in. if anything a tiny bit worse than expected, the market is very vulnerable and if it doesn't get worse than expected, when you're starting off at 22 times earnings, there is a very good chance of the markets having to reprice to a reasonable valuation. maria: is the no rate cut scenario already priced in.

i think there's a debate on that, some people think there is a shot for a rate cut tissue. >> the market itself, the futures market is saying 50% chance of a rate cut in september but we started off the year with six rate cuts priced in beginning in march, we are down to maybe one or two by the end of the year in the s&p is up 10% on the year, the market doesn't care about the fed st story. the market knows only thing it needs to know the fed is done raising rates and whether september, december, january and some short-term point they will begin cutting the markets know that and when they begin i met the mindset that they won't end up cutting until november. maria: i think you're right i don't think they want to get in front of the election let's take a look at where the tenuous, as you can see were waiting on the next meeting in july look at the tenure this morning it is up

half a basis point is in duster's expect they will likely not cut rates the futures market 49% chance for the fed's first rate cut in september. we have big inflation data on deck that will certainly inform and the second read of for screw gdp out on thursday economist expecting the economy to grow one point to percent last quarter and will get the pce out on friday, look at the gdp number in the first quarter we've gone from 4.9% in the third quarter of last year all the way down to 1.6% now were expecting it to go to 1.3%, things are slowing down quite considerably as i could hit margins and earnings? >> i don't think so, the gdp was about inventory last quarter in the 4.9 in q3 of last year was quite an outlier around transitory things, the biggest

issue we need more fixed investment on the corporate side of the economy businesses have to invest and productivity and we see some of it and it's an industrial activity that is healthy but it's a longer-term story we are so far off of trendline growth going back to the financial crisis we are nowhere near averaging 3% real gdp growth and that's what we need to get back to to have a healthy u.s. economy. maria: it makes sense, jumping. maria: i wanted to ask about the economy because earnings season is wrapping up we have costco this week, it's been a rough week for a lot of these names, when you people like mcdonald's and other retailers that are saying they are in trouble, that really shows you that the consumer has pulled back so exponentially and disbanded in the gdp growth that you're

talking about is it going to come to for which and i'm wondering when that is going to change because inflation data is not going to the right direction keeps going in the wrong direction. >> i disagree with both statements to be honest i think the inflation has done nothing but go down other than the shelter figure and outliers like the auto insurance and so forth but the fact of the matter is that despite the administration efforts where they made the labor shortage worse and knock on the productivity and i don't think this is much about the fed either i think your price inflation rent that held overall number above three in the pce is around two and half but if you look at the real numbers, rent realtor that number is way lower, i think the consumer is the last thing any of us need to worry about because americans love to spend money we are on

the supply side and we need to produce more. maria: you've made this point for a while the supply-side and i'm glad you are raising it but we will get a window into the consumer this week when we get earnings from dick's sporting goods, dollar general, best buy, kohl's coming out this week costco, nordstrom on thursday you have that as well, your thoughts on the macro story. >> i have to disagree with david, inflation is coming down but each year over year it is down from 9% peak in 21 but year-over-year still up and it's about the fed's target, lending tree produces study visits 70% of the survey said fast-food is luxury to them so this is a problem burger king is saying we have 70 problems in taco bell saying there's lots of problems when you fast-food feeling in america yet massive massive underlying fundamental problems.

maria: i don't know that the jobs pictures are strong as it looks a lot of part-time growth in jobs. >> there is part-time growth but mostly voluntary it is difficult to argue with any number in the high three in the point that i'd made is the weekly jobless claims the one data point that cannot lie you simply have a low amount of americans applying for an appointment. i think on the inflation side, mcdonald's is down from the high and that is up so dramatically there's a lot of idiosyncratic stories that a lot of us need to appreciate and what i mean by that the consumer is not reflected in one company's numbers it's not like walmart can do real well and calls can do poorly because of the consumer doing poorly there are some companies that are outperforming other companies but it's very true inflation is up year-over-year it's always up it's never down ever. maria: it's up about 19% on joe biden's watch in the last three
