5:02 pm
biden tonight. despite biden's week of nonstop preparation at camp david, a new national poll from "the new york times" and sienna college just released finds that 60%9 of registered voters say former president trump would perform very or somewhat well tonight, only 46% say the same thing about biden. >> he's going to be prepared the best he's ever going to be prepared. so what america needs to judge is this is joe biden at its very top. not where he could be president on october 7th when israel gets attacked and he's got to put a lid on it. this is joe biden preparing for an entire week for 90 minutes. so this could be the very best he's ever going to be. >> reporter: both campaigns are out with new ads today kind of giving us a preview of what we might be able to expect from the candidates once they hit the stage tonight. for biden and the campaigns that they put out, they focus on abortion, and former president trump, whether he's fit for
5:03 pm
office. and for the trump campaign, they are going -- they are already hammering bind on the economy -- biden on the economy, and trump we expect will continue to do that tonight. trump is also expected to go after biden for his age, but there are a9 lot of questions about what to expect tonight from both candidates. for biden, liz, it's very rare that we see him for 90 minutes straight without a teleprompter, without notes. and for trump, we see him without a prompter going off the cuff all the time at his rally, but voters are going to expect a more calm demeanor from him, so the stakes are high for both men tonight. liz? elizabeth: great job as always, dwraildty. really interesting stuff. let's bring in for his reaction former utah congressman, fox news contributor jason chaffetz. jason, thank you so much for joining us tonight. jason, you know, you and i have been talking about this, no one is talking about this. what do you think about this, jason? should trump go after biden on this, that the biden white house was an historic mistake? it was the exact wrong president
5:04 pm
at the wrong time, that biden made colossal a, epic if mistakes and botched the recovery out of historic pandemic lockdowns that threw 322 million out of work, shut down mom and pop shops -- 232 million. biden wrongly nickeled and dimed and and mandated america when it was in historic pain. he opened the borders, when instead trump would have simply unleashed america's economic might and capitalism. jason, no one is talking about this. what do you want to hear about this tonight? >> they should be, because biden's formula for success is more government and more taxes. he wants to let the so-called trump taxes expire which would raise taxeses. he opened up the border throwing millions of people into these -- all across america. the crime that's coming out of that, we see it as a daily drum beat. it's put upward pressure on housing. it's put pressure on our schools.
5:05 pm
the inner cities if big cities can't sustain that. and what is joe biden's formula for success? what is his formula la to get us out of inflation? he doesn't have one. so when it comes to, it's what larry kudlow just said, prosperity, safety and security, joe biden doesn't have a plan oversea, he wasn't have one in our backward, he doesn't have one at a the border, is and he that has no way of tackling inflation. remember, democrats had the house, the senate and the presidency for his first two years, and they made the situation worse, not better. elizabeth elizabeth his approval dropped in "the new york times"/sienna poll, gallup has him around a 37. biden is trending below levels where george h.w. and jimmy carter lost. you know, one of the big things, jason, people are talking about is why biden needed the take a week off to prepare with 16 advisers when biden has done 28 debates since 198?
5:06 pm
what do you want to watch for when it comes to biden's stamina and conduct? what do you expect to see? >> i expect to see a juiced-up joe ready to go, you know? just bouncing off the a walls. and so, look, why the are expectations so low for joe biden? because people have seen it for the last three and a half years. he does not have the ability to make a solid argument. he stumbles. he's just -- it's an embarrassment. look at that poll that you put up there. 60% of americans think that donald trump's going to have a better performance because he's got the energy, the vigor, the vim, everything, a better plan for america. expectations are so low. and if your expectations of your president are so low, do you really want to give him four more years? it's just going to get worse, not better. elizabeth blithe i mean, in the coverage of this, the president -- he's been in d.c. for about 50 years. he's never worked in the private sector. so the major debate flashpoints,
5:07 pm
the economy, the border crisis that collapsed, crime, the pandemic response that was botched, overseas wars, reports that trump is going to try to trigger biden, calling him the worst president in u.s. history, and biden is going to try to trigger trump by citing the january 6th riots. jason, what do you make of that new washington post poll? more than half of voters under the age of 25 say trump is better on protecting democracy. what do you think? >> because donald trump is better at protecting democracy. it was joe biden that tried to shut down these things. look, to your point, liz, joe biden was elected in 1972. i was 5 years old trying to figure out out how to the play soccer. if you can't get it done since 1972, do we really think you just need 4 more years? that's not a winning argument, certainly not if you're a 25-year-old looking for a good job. you're ready, willing to work and you can't go out and get the jobs that you want for a variety of reasons. elizabeth: yep.
5:08 pm
>> and you challenge joe biden, say, what is your plan, and he doesn't have one. he does not per if sonify the future. elizabeth: let's go through the polls. one poll suggests a majority of voters plan to watch, maybe 7 out of -- 1 out of 7 may be open to changing their choices. look at the polls. a new quinn by -- quinnipiac poll, trump ahead of biden by 4 points. polls show a majority of voters feel america's on the wrong track. we've got elections' guru nate silver giving trump 66% odds of winning. nate silver says polls have been extremely stable so far. they tend to be predictive at this point since, you know, both of them were on the ballot last time, and they are now known by voters. what do you make of all this? >> well, look, i give joe biden credit for showing up and actually doing the debate, because i was in the camp that didn't think he would do it. but i also think it's desperation because how else is he going to get out of the hole
5:09 pm
that he's in? elizabeth: all right. thank you, jason chaffetz. appreciate you coming on tonight. >> thank you. elizabeth: joining us now from house education making his debut appearance on "the evening edit," michigan congressman john james. we're so excited to have you on the show, congressman. thanks for joining us on this debate night. >> of course. elizabeth: congressman, the economy, a number one topic tonight at the debate. the government just released its final first quarter u.s. gdp if realize revised to just 1.4% for the first quarter. congressman, that's down from 3.4 in the fourth quarter, 4.9 in the second quarter. economists are really worried biden may have to deal with stagflation tonight. do you think cnn's going to ask about that? >> of course not because cnn has circled the wagons around joe biden to protect his fleck fledgling and -- fledgling and flagging presidency. right now americans all over the country and especially in michigan are feeling the pain
5:10 pm
from biden's terrible policies that have sent gas price up 55.5%, inflation up an average of to 20% over the past three and a half years. americans literally cannot afford another four years of joe biden. elizabeth: congressman, a big feature of the debate too is voters, what voters are saying. voters across the board from all walks of life, congressman, they're angry about inflation, what's a going on with the border and crime. watch a voter react the that, congressman. and then we want you to listen to nancy pelosi's wild topspin on biden and inflation saying he's great. not talking about how it's nearly 20% compounded under biden versus a around 5, 6 for president trump. you're going to hear a biden cochair claiming people are, quote, having amnesia about trump's economy. watch this. >> the country's not being run well right now. >> the basics. everybody needs work. right now they got a whole lot of immigrants out here from different places. the same thing trump was talking about a long time ago is
5:11 pm
happening. >> people are concerned about inflation, and you have joe biden on the other side of that a screen leading the world in reducing i inflation in our country. >> i do think that people have amnesia. and as i've been talking to communities across the country for the campaign, especially latino communities, i have reminded them about what we experienced for four years under trump. elizabeth: really? look at the numbers under trump. low inflation, low gas prices, low mortgage and low borrowing rates versus rampant inflation under biden. gallup is reporting confidence in biden's economic stewardship is historically low for u.s. presidents. what do you say, congressman? >> look, these out of touch elitists had better be glad that we don't have guillotines in america. this met them eat cake moment that the democrats are having is
5:12 pm
exactly why it's not just about red and blue, it's about us and them, haves and have nots. there are too many americans who are hurting. and meanwhile, while nancy pelosi is living high on the hog in san francisco and joe biden who has a $4.5 million place in rehoboth beach in delaware, they can afford to be insulated from the pain. real americans in my district, in my state and this country are hurting. purpose's policies that bring -- president trump's policies that bring prices down, secure our border and stabilize the world is what we need. we need strength in the white house, and we do not have that currently. elizabeth: i'm not sure they'd get out the guillotines, but they sure would be mad. trump accurately predicted -- we hear your point, and they're well taken -- that, trump said that families would lose, like $6500 under joe biden if he was elected in 2020, and now we find out the average family lost $7400 due to inflation, so trump
5:13 pm
was right. >> trump was right on this and many other things. remember when president trump said criminals were coming as cross our border? remember when he said they're flooding us and poise s&p softening our nation and we were called racist in and now we have 110,000 people dying of fentanyl poisoning every single year, 10 million undocumented going into our communities that are flooding, and you have people kicking black kids out of schools, and then you have access to transportation, food and education that african-americans have been waiting for for 400 years, and you have illegal immigrants getting it in 4 days. you even have charlemagne the god talk about this, trump said don't build nord stream 2 or russia's going to do something crazy, and what happened? germany built it, funded russia's war in ukraine, and now we have chaos in europe for the first time since world war ii. joe biden's policies fail at home and abroad, and we need to get back on track with president trump back in the white house.
5:14 pm
elizabeth: well, congressman, you just knocked it out of the park. we hope you come back. >> i'll come back soon. elizabeth: still ahead, congressman carlos gimenez, congressman russell fry from judiciary and oversight, "forbes" media chair steve forbes, fox news' legal analyst gregg jarrett with, "wall street journal" columnist bill mcgurn and political commentator kaylee mcghee white. we've got more details coming in on government and cia officials accused of interfering and suppressing hunter biden's laptop to help biden in 2020. we're going to talk about how that looms large over tonight's cnn presidential debate. and we're digging into a new report on why former first lady michelle obama will not campaign for joe biden. plus, new details on special counsel jack smith's team reportedly will likely be watching the debate tonight. why? also the supreme court is about to decide on trump's claim of presidential immunity. which way will they go?
5:15 pm
and we got more news on how president biden, he likes to talk up his hometown of scranton narrative in the swing state of pennsylvania. but biden ignores that even scranton has been hit very hard by a violent crime wave now slamming small town america. and biden does even more inflationary spending of your money to send his cabinet on a campaign messaging tour nationwide to pressure you to change your mind about inflation hitting your families. how is that not a federal violation? and we've got a major pushback against a dhs secretary mayorkas desperately trying to downpray reports of 400 -- downplay reports of 4000 illegal aliens -- 400 crossing into the via a smuggling ringling linked to isis terrorists. taking it on on "the evening edit can." tonight.

giuliani. >> you mean the laptop is now another russia, russia, russia -- you gotta -- >> that's exactly -- >> this is -- elizabeth: okay, wait a second. we've got a new house report. house lawmakers say at least 2 of the 51 former intelligence officials who signed that letter before the 2020 race, election rather, falsely speculating the hunter biden laptop was russian disinformation were on the cia payroll. the government later used that laptop as evidence to convince -- rather, to convict, rather, hunter biden on federal gun charges. griff jenkins has more in washington. griff. >> reporter: good evening, liz. that statement has not only been proven false, hunter's laptop also just appeared in federal court as a key piece of evidence, and this is likely coming up tonight especially after this joint report released by republican-led house committees claims 511 former intelligence officials -- 511
5:47 pm
former intelligence officials discredited the laptop as russian disinformation. >> fifteen days before an election 51 former intel officials signed a statement with their former titles by their name, a statement prompted by the biden campaign, a statement signed by some who were on contract with the cia. >> reporter: in the report, it says former cia a deputy director michael morrell was prompted to draft that statement by a phone call from then-biden campaign official and now secretary of state antony blinken who has denied any involvement. >> well, first, one of the great benefits of this job is that i don't do politics and don't engage in it. but with regard to that letter, i didn't -- it wasn't my if idea, didn't ask for it, didn't solicit it. >> reporter: the top democrat on the house intelligence committee jim himes is blasting it. >> like so much of the jim jordan productions, it's a high december decibel, zero calorie nothing burger. they're saying the cia should have stopped these 51 people
5:48 pm
from expressing their political beliefs. >> reporter: the cia issued a statement to fox saying these former officers were not speaking for the cia. liz? elizabeth: griff jenkins, thank you so much. let's bring in congressman russell fry and columnist from "the wall street journal,"s bill mcgurn. congressman, your to griff's report there. cia workers were reportedly upset about what happened, and these two on the payroll were not stopped in signing that letter. what do you think, congressman? >> i think, you know, obviously within the cia there were some grave concerns about what was going on, that this would be viewed politically, that protocols were ignored, that certain things that you go through to approve a statement were not actually done. and to top it all off, i think the most egregious action is that people were actually paid that might have been -- they were on contract with the cia, and so in the letter they said they had no access to classified information. that is not true. and so it is of grave concern
5:49 pm
that you have, again, a weaponized government that is targeting it political opponents for their own benefit. elizabeth: yeah. has all the hallmarks of a disinformation campaign, huh, bill? bill, you've got to think the obamas are appalled behind the scenes about joe biden and the corruption allegationses coming out of the laptop and the impeachment probe. house lawmakers say the biden family looks like they may have made $30 million selling access to joe biden and the government. now axios is reporting former first lady michelle obama is frustrated with the bidens. she's not campaigning or even tweeting for joe biden. she's frustrated how the bidens basically iced out and exiled her friend kathleen buell over the divorce from hunter. >> yeah, i don't know about that, what the reasoning would be. but there's one general rule in washington, people flee a loser. and there's a sense that joe biden is flailing. the obamas are thinking why should i go down with that ship?
5:50 pm
there's no loss between barack obama and joe biden. joe biden was treated like a fool at the white house when he served there as vice president, and he got into office vowing to get even, to do -- outdo barack obama. so i don't think they like each other. and their staffs don't. it's not surprise. elizabeth: you know, the former first lady, michelle obama, is considered savvy and smart. she was initially reluctant to campaign for biden, congressman frierk after he became the nominee in 2002 -- 2020. and president obama in 2015 discouraged biden from running. you know, the former first lady has reportedly a dislike for partisan politics. she likes to keep away from it. what do you think of all that's going on, congressman? >> i think you're with, i think he's exactly right when no one wants to be part of a sinking ship. here you've got a president who can't even stand on stage for
5:51 pm
more than 5 minutes when he's doing some sort of town hall, can't answer questions of the media, i don't know how you can govern a country when you only work for two hours a day. so it's really, you know, it's really remarkable to see this split. and we never really see this amongst democrats where where they break from each other, but i'm sure there's going to be ample pressure to put her out on the campaign trail after this report. elizabeth: bill, what do you want to see tonight in the debate? >> well, i want to see a debate. even's watching to see whether biden can stand up under the pressure and whether trump will be disciplined and control himself. people want -- people regard trump like mike tyson. they want to see if he's going to bite biden's ear off in this debate. i suspect trump will be much more disciplined than people are expecting. elizabeth: congressman fry, bill mcgurn, that was terrific. we'll do it again soon, okay? it's great to have you gentlemen on. appreciate it. >> thank you.
