this campaign. elizabeth: yeah. he's got a rally tomorrow in michigan with j.d. vance. so, mr. huckabee, what doug just said. your reaction to what doug just said. you know, facebook's mark zuckerberg now calls president trump a, quote, bad ass. okay, that got me saying a bad word on tv, but your to all this, mr. huckabee. [laughter] >> yeah. you're sounding like my mother who never could curse, so she would just say sometimes that guy's got himself in a mell of a hess, and that was as close as she could come. i think i sense that on you, liz. elizabeth: good, i'll use it. [laughter] >> what i think we saw this week was donald trump intuitively reacting as a leader does. that moment he was shot, there's no preparation for that. you don't have a textbook, you don't train or for it. that was intuitive reaction for him to stand up, blood coming down his face, fist in the air and saying to that crowd to reassure them fight, fight,

fight. what we saw joe biden in a a juxtaposition picture was him crawling up the steps of air force one with covid. so one guy is overcoming a bullet wound, and the if other guy is overcome by covid. that's the campaign. and i just don't see how the democrats work their way out of this with or without joe biden. because if he gets off the ballot, they still have to defend their horrible policies, and donald trump can run on what he has done as president. and and i'd rather take his positions any day of the week, twice on sunday. elizabeth: yeah. so the governor said, that's what we're hearing too. no democrat wants to step in and have a black mark on their record, you know, at the 1 111th hour, stepping in for joe biden. they're in a mad scramble to see who would want to do that. doug, i want to back up. there's context here that that i think some in the media are missing. we are in a unique american moment, doug. polls for years show americans have been saying politicians

broke the compact. they broke faith with voters who pay their paychecks. they have said just keep us safe, keep us process produce. trump saying he's going to do. that pew research says, you know, party control of d.c. has been whipping back and forth with accelerating speed for generations. the polls show the discontent and distrust in government, doug. it's the vietnam war, watergate, iran contra, george h.w. bush's read my lips, no new taxes. bill clinton lying about his sex scandals. dick cheney falsely claiming iraq has wmds, dragging america into war. the financial crisis, obama polarizing and dividing america with far-left ideologies, lecturing america's bad, only he can fix it, and joe biden and his family doing the same thing and profiting, accused of profiting from government access, selling influence. voters have been saying donald trump is not beholden to anyone. he just wants to fix america. >> yeah.

i mean, that's a big part of it. and i think you heard this from j.d. vance, i think that's one of the reasons why you saw the vice president pick made lake it was. i think donald trump comes at it from a business perspective that is coming forward though with many years of experience of dealing with public, dealing with that, you know, from the entertainment side to the building side. he understood how to get things done. and people are desperate for that. look, i made this comment on mike's show, huckabee's show as well, we've got to get back to not divorcing politics and reality, and donald trump does that very well. he makes reality statements, he talks about what we can and can't do and what he wants to do. and i think that's the after fir meation that people need to see. they don't need a government that just tells them what they think they need to hear, i -- they need a government that works for them. elizabeth: that's right. let's get your reaction to president trump talking about healing america, policy fixes to fix america's broken business

update this hour on the investigation if into the assassination if attempt on president trump that that almost took his life. hillary. >> reporter: good evening, liz. whistleblowers have come out and are alleging that the majority of former president trump's security detail was not actually secret service at the butler, pennsylvania, rally. senator josh hawley says that whistleblowers with direct knowledge of the event told him that the majority of trump's detail was actually with dhs' hsi unit, the homeland security investigations unit, who he says were unfamiliar with standard protocols at these vents like the secret service would be. hawley saying, quote, whistleblowers tell me most of trump's security detail last saturday were not even secret service. dhs assigned unprepared and inexperienced personnel. in a letter to dhs secretary alejandro mayorkas, hawley saw is whistle blowers allege, quote, the july 13th rally was

considered to be a loose security event. detection k-9s were not used to detect threats in the usual manner, individuals without proper designations were able to gain access to backstage areas, and department personnel did the not appropriately police the security bumper around the program. we are learning new details about the shooter. fbi officials briefing lawmakers told them thomas crooks had three encrypted overseas accounts, and officials are trying to gain access to learn more about a them. >> what we know, and this was on the briefing we just received, he had three encrypted overseas accounts the finish bi is trying to get into -- >> what do you mean by overseas accounts? >> we know they were based in servers overseas, and so you've got to work over there with the fbily liaisons overseas to start getting into them. >> reporter, and liz, the secret service are director will get a chance to face lawmakers and answer their questions on monday. she will be appearing before the

house oversight committee. liz? elizabeth: thank you so much, hillary vaughn. always great journalism from you. let's bring in former acting i.c.e. director, former law enforcement officer tom homan. so, tom, you just heard hillary's report. now we've got the first rally with president trump and his running mate, j.d. vance, tomorrow in michigan, and secret service is asking local law enforcement for additional help. i think that's pretty much routine. the rally's going to be the indoors. what do you think of what's going on? >> well, what concerns me is i just heard on your show, this is the first time i've heard it, that hsi, homeland security investigation, was a part of the security team. now, i ran -- hsi is part of i.c.e. hsi agents had assisted in the past for security, but they're not trained to do personal attention. so if they were actually there doing personal protection if, that's a problem. hay don't have the training secret service does, so that needs to be fully investigated, because i just heard that for the first time on your show.

that's one concern. look, i've been worried about the president for the last three years. i'm around him a lot. i'm i've been to the mar-a-lago many times and in new york. i think his security needs to be up. he isn't a normal ex-president. he's very controversial. he's leading in the polls. and he needs as much protection as secret service can give them, and -- him, and they're not doing it. again, having -- secret service needs to be the primary focus on personal protection. you can get other agencies to guard a fans or a manhole cover, but when it comes to personal protection, that is hundreds and hundreds of hours of training that secret service goes through. that should be secret service agents only. elizabeth: you know, so it cost a fire chief's life. we're going to show the long line of 5090 to fire trucks -- 500 fire trucks in the funeral procession today for firefighter corey comperatore. he was killed at the trumpal rally.

so the security lapses that got trump nearly aa saws may noted, the gunman was a person of interest a little more than an hour before he fired the shot. trump was allowed onto the stage 10 minutes after the hunt for the shooter began. let's show the timeline. he actually reportedly was at the rally site a week ahead of time. the timeline is terrifying. the gunman was scoping out the rally site a week priemplet he was there early on the morning of the shooting, then came back sometime in the early 5 p.m. hour. and then, you know, they were basically saying, hey, he's a person of interest. but why was the president allowed on the rally stage? >> look, this is the most inept -- every day we learn more and more and more. this is -- i've never seen anything like it. secret service is better than this. somebody needs to be held accountable. what concerns me, the director was refusing to answer questions. she should have had a news conference that same day. she should have a news conference every day letting us know what's happening rather than hearing from a hundred

different media stations. i will say this, the men on the stage, the men that rushed the president, i know those guys on a first name basis. the first bullet they were up those stair, across the stage in the matter of two seconds covering the president. brave men, heroes. they did the right thing. the problem is whoever managed the overall security apparatus of that event failed. and they need to be held responsible. you know, the fireman died protecting his family, he shouldn't have died. there should have been no one on the roof with a rifle that a close to the president. so what i'm really hoping for is the congressional oversight does a deep-down investigation. don't let the fbi or secret service do it. now i'm hearing dhs inspector general's going to do it. no. this needs to be an outside investigation -- elizabeth: who? so should it be -- wait. should it be -- was there's a lot -- let me back up. should there be a separate commission, a task force? it sounds like you don't trust anybody to do it right, in a clean way with integrity because people are not trusting at all

of what's gone on inside. i mean, yeah, secret service, those guys would take a bullet. they're so brave. they've got a lot of integrity. but it seems like people don't understand why there were so many security lapses. i've got to go through more news, tom. the gunman reportedly searched on the internet for information about the arrest of the michigan mass shooter whose parents were just sentenced to jail. he killed four in that high school shooting in oxford, michigan, like in 202211. he visited web sites for how to build explosives, he had two cell phones, used three encrypted accounts overseas to communicate. internet searches for both trump and president biden found on the phone. so you're saying that every time trump has a rally, everybody's hair should have been on fire for years because of his high profile and who he is. >> absolutely. i mean, i'm with him a lot. i've been on that stage with him, you know? the president did the right thing, getting down behind the podium because there's certain protective features behind the

podium. the secret service agents on the stage did a tremendous job. but the overall security apparatus, who's planning that event, has failed. and i'll tell you something about the shooter, he's all over the place. he looked at stuff on biden and trump, i think this kid wanted to be famous. he wanted to be a shooter. he took the first opportunity, had a big crowd to make the news. i don't think this was a big, mass conspiracy. i just think it's a failure with of the utmost -- i've never seen anything like this. i'm shocked. every day a new fact comes out how bad this security is. the director of secret service should be fired. not resign, fired for her failure. and anybody else who planned that event needs to be fired. elizabeth: tom homan, appreciate you. thank you so much. good to see you. okay, still ahead, congresswoman beth van duyne from house transportation. we've got this war of words heating up between president trump, he says fire uaw chief shawn fein for, quote, failing

boston globe from democrat congressman seth moulton saying biden did not seem to recognize him at that gathering in normandy for the 80 toth anniversary of d-day, but biden just put out a statement he will campaign next week, and now they're talking also behind the scenes, democrats are talking about a mini primary contest putting up multiple democrats to replace him. what are you hearing? what's going on? >> well, they are in turmoil, there's no doubt about it. i mean, you know what's really sad about this though, liz in if they didn't have the debate, if that debate hadn't happened, they would just be moving along the way they always did. this is not new, liz, and you know it. for folks that have been following this, he has been mumbling, he's been falling asleep at meetings, he's been getting confused. he has had issues for years now, and simply because 50 million people saw in the debate, then they became concerned because it affected the polls which they

believe are going to be the bellwether with of how the election's going to go. and these folk it is are smart and they're focused. they do not want to lose. so the one thing i will say to my republican and independent friends out there and conservative democrats, don't be high phiing. don't think this is over -- fiving. we don't know where this is going to go yet, and they can -- they're going to to try to pull him out or pull somebody out to really make this election still turn around and be for democrats. we have to be strong and work hard. elizabeth: okay. so that message is heard loud and clear. you know, so how much of this is the about biden's pride and ego? because reports are coming in that he's feeling angry, betrayed, disrespected by his own top democrats. he's surrounded by, we're hearing, a stunningly small circle of insiders. there's concerns that the tight circle around him is stopping the bad news. so -- and then also nbc's reporting biden is talking about demanding any exit plan that's,

quote, worthy of the more than five decades he's been in d.c. if. >> well, of course he's angry, because he has been this way all along. and all of a sudden now a whole lot of people are turning on him in his party. so he feels bepray -- betrayed. that doesn't surprise me at all because he has had these problems, but they were willing to work with him. it was a group of people around him, he almost had an oligarchy of people that were getting the job done for him, who were really producing the product. it was never him, in my opinion, over the last couple of years especially. so now, you know, part of what i believe is the organic problem that he has, and i say this with respect, is that these folks do get angry. and so he's angry, he's hurt, and he's going to fight a little bit. this isn't over yet. elizabeth: it's not over. >> it's good -- exactly. and if people should know -- elizabeth: so he may stay in because the far left including aoc and bernie sanders are backing him, and that's the

turnout, but then he's got in the far left you know, the boycott vote because of what is going on in gaza. so the other thing too, final word, should democrats who attacked special counsel robert hur, should they apologize to him? because he said, you know, biden is an elderly man with memory problems in this classified documents report, but those same democrats attacked hur, and now they're calling on biden to drop out for specifically what robert hur said. at what point will they apologize? are they going to do that? the blatant bullying false 450ds keep getting swept under the the rug. >> of course they will not apologize. of course they should apologize. he's had this problem all along. hur accurately portrayed thed it, and that's why we wanted to get the video, actually, of what went on. you know what i believe? i believe in that interview if you actually hear the video, it's much worse than the text and that he was rambling and that he couldn't keep track of his ideas and his thoughts.

>> well, i don't think they're going to listen to donald trump. i don't think they're going to back away from their lawfare. but i would agree with liz that it's backfired on them. the more they do it, the more donald trump surges politically, surges politically in the polls, in fund raising. but they're not going to abandon it. it's one of the main things they've been doing to try and get biden reelected, so they're not going to step away from it. but it's been extremely beneficial to donald trump, as brutal as it has been for him not only personally, but also just the legal bills that have built up. but last night, to me, liz, was one of the greatest political comebacks ever despite all the a lawfare, despite everything that has been thrown against donald trump since he left office. where he was in february of 2021 when i was sitting with him at a mar-a-lago, no republican wanted him to run again. they wanted america first to go away. last night, trump triumphant. elizabeth: yeah. so what ned just said. you know, liz, we've talked
