president donald trump, and he's at a point in his life right now where he doesn't communicate as well as he used to. so he wants to stick the landing here and i do hope the best for him because he's a public servant and deserves to leave with digty. >> we leave with the panel and inside the oval office president joe biden. >> our fellow americans, i'm speaking to you tonight from the desk in the oval office, this sacred space, surrounded by portraits extraordinary american presidents. thomas jefferson, wrote words that guide this nation george washington, showed us presidents are not kings. abraham lincoln who reject malice franklin roosevelt who inspired us to reject fear. i revere this office. i love my country more.
8:03 pm
it's been the hon nor of my life to serve as your president. but in defense of democracy which is at stake, i think it is more important than any title. i draw strength and i find joy in working for the american people. but this sacred task a perfecting our union is not about me. it's about you. your families, your futures, it's about we the people. and we can never forget that. and i never have. i've made it clear that i believe america is at infliction point one of the rare moments in history when the decisions we make now determine our fate of our nation and the world for decades to come. america is going to have to choose between moving forward or backward. between hope and hate. between unity and division. we have to decide do we still

believe in honesty, decency, respect? freedom justice and democracy, and this moment we can see those we disagree with not as enemies but as -- fellow americans. can we do that? does character and public life still matter? i believe i know the answer to these questions. because i know you the american people. and i know this, we are a great nation because we are good people. you elected me to this office, i promised to always level with you. to tell you the truth. the truth sacred cause of this country is larger than any one of us those of us who cherry that cause cherish it so much a cause of american democracy itself must unite to protect it. you know, in recent weeks it's become clear to me that i need
8:05 pm
to yoongt unite my party in this critical endeavor i believe my record as president my leadership in the world, my vision for america's future, all to the second term but nothing, nothing can come in the way of saving our democracy. that includes personal ambition. so i've decided the best way forward is the pass the torch to a new generation. it's the best way to unite our nation. i know there's a time and a place for a long years of experience in public life. there's also a time and place for new voices, fresh voices yes younger voices and that time and place is now. when the next six months, i'll be focused on doing my job as president. that means i'll continue to lower cost for hardworking families.
8:06 pm
grow our economy, i'll keep defending our personal freedoms and our civil rights. from the right to vote to the right to choose. i'll keep calling out hate and extremism. make it clear there's no place, no place in america for political violence or any violence ever, period. i'm going to keep speaking out to protect our kids from gun violence. our planet from climate crisis is existential threat i'll keep fighting for my cancer moon shot so we can end cancer as we know it because we can do it. i'm going call for supreme court reform because this is critical to our democracy. supreme court reform. you know, i'll keep working to ensure american remain strong, secure, in the leader of the free world. i'm a first president of this century to report to the
8:07 pm
american people that the united states is not at war anywhere in the world. we'll keep rallying coalition of proud nations to stop putin taking over ukraine and doing more damage we'll keep nato stronger and i'll make it more powerful and more united than any time in all of our history. i'll keep doing the same for allies in the pacific. you know about when i came into office convention was the china would inevitably surpass the united states. that's not the case anymore. and i'm going to keep working to end the war in gaza bring home all of the hostages and bring peace and security to the middle east and end this war. we're also working around clock to bring home americans unjustly detained all around the world. you know, i've come so far since my inauguration. and on that day i told you that

i stood -- winter stood in a winter of pearl and a winter of possibilities. peril and possibilities. we're in the group -- we were in the group of the worst pandemic in the century. the worst economic crisis since the great depression worst attack on our democracy since the civil war. we came together as americans. we got through it. we merged stronger, more prosperous and more secure. today we have a strongest economy in the world creating nearly 16 million new jobs, a record wages are up. inflation continues to come down. a racial wealth gap is lowest it's been in 20 year and rebuilding our entire nation urban, suburban, rural, travel communities. manufacturing has come back to america. we're leading the world again in chips and science and innovation. we finally big big pharm for

years and lowering cost for everyone not just seniors. more people have health care today in america than ever before. i sign one of the most significant laws helping millions of veterans and their families who are exposed to toxic materials, you know, most significant climate law ever, ever in the history of the world the first major gun safety law in 30 years. today, violent violent crime rate is at a 50-year low also securing our border. border crossings are lower today than when the previous administration left office. i've kept my commitment to appoint first black woman to the supreme court of the united states of america. i also kept my commitment to have an administration that looks like america. and be a president for all americans. that's what i've done. i ran for president four years
8:10 pm
ago because i believed and still do the soul of america was at stake and nature of who we are was at stake and that's still the case. america is an idea. an idea stronger than any army. bigger than any ocean. more powerful than any dictator or tyrant most powerful idea in the history of the world. that idea is that we hold these truths to be self-evident. we're all created equal and alienable rights, life, liberty, pursuit of happiness we've never fully lived up to this sacred idea and never walked away from it either and i don't believe american people will walk away from it now. just a few months, the american people will choose the course of america's future. i made my choice. i've made my views known. i like to thank our great vice

president kamala harris experienced she's tough, she's capable. she's been an incredible partner to me, and leader for our country. now, the choice is up to you, the american people. you make that choice, remember the words of benjamin franklin hanging on my wall in the oval office, alongside the bus of king and chavez when beaning benjamin franklin emerged from the convention going on, whether the founders have given america a monarchy republic franklin response was a republic, if you can keep it. a republic if you can keep it. whether we keep our republic is now in your hands. my fellow americans it's been the priser -- privilege of my life to serve this nation over 50 years
8:12 pm
nowhere else on earth could a kid with a stutter from modest beginningings scranton, pennsylvania, claremont, delaware sit behind resolute desk as president of the united states. here i am. that's what's so special about america. we're a nation of promise and possibilities. of dreamers and doers, of ordinary americans doing extraordinary things. i give my heart and my soul to our nation. like so many others, i've been blessed million times in return with the love and support of the american people. i hope you can have some idea how grateful imto all all of yoe great thing about america is here, kings and dictators do not rule. the people do. history is in your hands. the power is in your hands. the idea of america lies in your

hands. just have to keep faith, keep the faith. and remember who we are -- we're the united states of america. and there's simply nothing, nothing beyond our capacity when we do it together. so let's act together. preserve our democracy. god bless you all. may god protect our troops. thank you. >> president biden in the oval office looking well after a bout with covid. still with a soft gravelly voice saying he draws strength and finds joy working for the american people but also that it's not about him. he said nothing can stand in the way of saving our democracy including presidential ambition. he's chosen not to run again. he said there's a time and place for new voices, younger voices, but he didn't talk about the 14 plus million democrats who voted for him in the primaries and caucuses. he didn't talk about his health. he didn't talk about his party pushing back and just days ago,
8:14 pm
saying he would be the no, nomie of his party but he did talk about vice president harris talking about the convention in chicago. >> brett we didn't get that many details about what went into this decision. we know that he made it very quickly on sunday afternoon. we were told that by his press secretary earlier today. but he said i revere this office. but i love my country more and he did appear to be kind of tan and rested. and it makes you wonder whether there is an element of relief now that this decision is really sinking in. for the 46th president of the united states. it was a list of the things that he felt are establishments for a while. and he said kamala harris is incredible partner and he's grateful for all of you in america so let's go around the
8:15 pm
panel and get a sense of everyone's reaction to this speech. brit let's begin with you. >> running for reelection thought he could win the race and serve four more years until some time between saturday night and sunday morning when it dawned on him apparently it was time for a new generation of leaders. something that escaped his notice now low these many months and years that then he got up on sunday and decided he would turn everything over to this new generation led by kamala harris whom as you mention martha extolled as being a great partner to him. there was enough mention of democracy and sacredness of it to suggest that there was more than a little political motivation in his speech since democracy in the salvation of it has been such a theme of his and kamala harris' election program but it was a convention overnight it seems you believe it. i'm not sure i do. >> harold your party is fired up
8:16 pm
ready to go it seems with vice president harris there's been a coalescing i want to bring you color from inside the oval office. the seated to the president's left in the oval office were family members, doctor jill biden ashley biden, hunter biden, howard, macey biden. finnegan and hunter president's grandson also seated senior advisor mike and steve racheti ashley biden had her eyes closed nodding and breathing deeply and dabbed her eyes with her shirt a couple of times. this is an emotional time. he's still going to be president and republicans say there's a problem with that. harold. >> dana. >> glad you shared who was in the office with him because it is important for everyone to know how emotional and how much
8:17 pm
gratitude they had and he has. you know, i'm reminded as brit said that this is -- this sounded like a convention acceptance speech he recited miss accomplishments he talked about his service he talked about how he got to where he is and campaigny people may give him rope on that but i'm a christian brett an my faith means a lot to me as i heard him speaking all i could think was -- there's a season for everything. there was a season for him to think about running for office there was a season to run and a season to win. and senate even as vice president and president and now there's a season for him to pass the torch. we may not get the answers to the questions that brit asked and my deserve them and may not get them but we know is that this is an american who loved this country you may disagree with him or some things for that matter nothing but one thing you can't disagree with is that this is a guy who gave it his all and give it all over the next six
8:18 pm
months hopefully the lord gives him the strength to do that. >> dana he said, you know, that a kid with a stutter can make it all the way to the resolute desk at the white house. he also sort of fixed a couple of things that had maybe not been said the way he wanted to and prior things we finally beat big pharm and i think he meant medicare and talked about first black woman on the supreme court. also something that he mentioned in an interview the other day that got garbled so redo in some ways perhaps this is the speech he would have given. >> i really wanted to love this speech. i wanted to be happy for him. i wanted to say good for you sir and i wanted to feel reassured he's got what it takes to get us through next six months people really wanted to know what happened in the last three weeks but this speech was like a mini "state of the union" like in january 2025 and rang hollow i
8:19 pm
don't think it helps kamala harris as she tries to make some sort of a break with him as she tries to get this nomination and try to beat donald trump. it is going to be very difficult for her to do so. he's got six months left, and there's a lot of problems in this country he said he's going to fix all of them so we'll see how that goes. >> tomorrow markses four weeks since that debate. the cnn debate where he the president walked out there said the first few words, mangled some of his sentences and caught everybody by surprise. as far as that moment -- his party then jumped and everything transpired after that marks two weeks almost to the assassination attempt of the former president. think of all that's transpired in four weeks of history real time, it's almost hard to digest. >> it is just extraordinary period of news as i can remember i've been doing this for well more than half a century. in terms of news this is the
8:20 pm
most tumultuous period i can think of and when we all look back on this in the fullness of time perhaps a better explanation of exactly the decision making process that president went through, it will be seen as inevitable once that debate happened that he would have to step aside and that someone else would have to come forward we know who we think that person is because the signs are all aligned for her to become his successor at least candidate for president i think that's where we are brett. debate happened and everything flowed from one thing that was the attempted murder of donald trump. >> will they campaign 20 seconds hoar and how much will we see the president after this? >> i think that lead-in from brett with the idea or the reality to have to scramble jets to fend off a russian end of the there you're going to see a lot of president. but i think right now the real issue for me is that he and kamala harris will mow
