circumstances the passing of rosalyn carter's we have been reporting thank you. if you're just joining us we have been reporting this afternoon the somber and his former first lady roslyn carter has died. she was 96 years old, hello america i am eric shawn in new york. molly: i am molly line the carter ce center just made the announcement one day after it revealed the former first lady had entered hospice care at home. back and made the center said the former first lady had been diagnosed with dementia. the carter's, who were weighed in 1946 with the longest married presidential couple in american history. her husband, former president jimmy carter's 99 years old he entered hospice earlier this year. chief of political anchor bret baier takes a look back at the life of the former first lady. cooks former first lady rosalynn carter was born in the small town of plains, georgia in 19207 per the same place as her

husband the 39th the president of the united states jimmy carter. even as a couple only spent one term and the white house rosalynn carter's effect is still felt in washington. >> i never doubted that he could be a great president. >> all her husband was working on middle east peace in trying to stem a rising gas prices, first lady rosalynn carter was busy consulting with the present on both domestic and foreign affairs. she even attended cabinet meetings, sitting in any available seats appeared jimmy and i were always partner she once said. 1977 she visited central and south america as the president personal representative. holding high level meetings with leaders on issues like human rights, beef exports, and drug trafficking. an honorary chair of the president's commission on mental health. >> that was the beginning of a lifelong crusade for me too try to help make life better for

people with mental illnesses. >> mrs. carter started to work on mental health is a first lady of georgia oversaw a 20 person advisory board and developed 38 task forces for the commission paired her work resulted in a final report recommending the implementation of the largest reform of mental health legislation and close to three decades. rosalynn carter also made sure to tend to the more traditional duties of her job is first lady and mother to amy. eight he insisted amy go to public school in washington d.c. and began what's normal for all first ladies a staff and office in the east wing of the white house. most of mrs. carter's work has been done since she and her husband left the washington after it loose in the 1980 election to ronald reagan she spent over 20 years in the carter foundation and atlanta. she and her husband worked on building houses on habitat for humanity.

afternoon. >> good afternoon and thank you. it is good to be with you. but sad on this occasion. rosalynn carter and jimmy carter had a love affair like most you never ever see and i had that with my husband and i think that was one of the things that we always had in common. i remember so many things about rosalynn carter. what i married my husband many know about this now i was a very young life there was an age difference her kindness and compassion -- which i got married and not letting what other people say hurt me is something i remember immediately. want to know things i have admired her for in the tried to support and do on my own now is talk about mental health issues. and to remove the stigma of talking about them.

she was a strong woman. she had the ability to fight to make a difference in causes. she knew what she was going to do she was a gentle lady. stay for the parallels between you and your late husband and the carter's to me strike me as very similar. she is someone who is very strong, very involved in politics. what wasn't that like for you and for her i imagine? and how did she help you deal with that? and in your case come fully into your own right as a political force. when you go to the georgetown dinner parties okay you are the spouse of the powerful and well-known one. >> when i first got married i was very young. washington is a very different town than it was when i got married in 1981. when i married jon we were in

the midst of a presidential election and they were in. there was a gentleness to her. in understanding and empathy that had strength and feeling to it. she loved her husband, i loved my husband. i knew who i was and she always knew who she was. she did not let people hurt her husband. she also knew she had the ability and did make a difference. eric: we talked abut her cbettercontributions and with ml illness. let me read you a quote from her book. i want to take mental illness and emotional disorders out of the closet to let people know iit's all right to having a problem without the fear of being called crazy. if only we could consider mental illness as straightforwardly as we do physical illness those affected could seek help and treated in an open and effective

way. that these days is much more accepted but that back then she was a force behind the scenes in dealing with that. what were those achievements like? why did she accomplish that? >> people don't understand, it took me years to talk about my own father's mental health issues. is it drug addiction i don't know who is bipolar or had something more serious. my parents domestic violence incidences in trying to kill each other. i was worried to talk about those. and i remember we were sitting on the floor of the house and jon knew my story and gave me the courage. she gave me support after words for finally having the courage to speak about it. my sister died of suicide, was in and out but needing help. it took eight while but we are

still far from removing the stigma. rosalynn carter began gave people the courage to talk about it she tried to make sure people were not attacked or paid for it in some way by have the courage to talk about it. she want access to more mental health providers and coverage we arthere still so many instances related to it. she open the door for where we are still struggling to get to today. >> thank you for sharing with their viewers and with us your personal experiences with that. thank you, from my heart. and on behalf of all of us here, so important. rosalynn carter paving the way for the country congresswoman debbie dingell of michigan our thoughts and prayers are with the carter families. i thank you for joining us to today. >> take care.

molly: thank you eric britton going to bring in a lucas tomlinson again for he's been alive there at the white house and bringing us reaction from some of the lawmakers and we are still waiting on the white house reaction. something congresswoman debbie dingell talked about was the great love story of mr. and mrst and former first lady. and a representative dingell said they had a love affair like most you never see. they fell in love as teenagers. they were together more than 77 years, your thoughts? >> 77 years is a really long time molly it's longer than the life expectancy of most americans sprayed the fact they are married that long happily is a testament to their marriage as we heard from britt a testament to the christian faith as well. you mention they went on a blind date met when they run teenagers on a blind date right after that date jimmy carter's are going to

marry that woman. what's incredible jimmy carter's mother was a nurse delivered that woman, rosalynn carter, into this world for this is a small town story from plains, p, george is only fitting by the way president joe biden and jill are at naval station norfolk right now honoring the crews of the uss gerald ford to strike a group which had to be extended into the mediterranean through this war. the fact the president is at a navy base right now in fact the first lady we are told just spoke and honored rosalynn carter let's listen in. >> former first lady rosalynn carter has just passed. and that she was well known for her efforts on mental health and caregiving and women's rights. i hope during the holidays you consider including the carter family in your prayers.

>> again there only fitting the bidens at a naval station norfolk the largest navy base in the world and former president jimmy carter was a naval academy graduate with the only president of the united states to graduate from annapolis in fact a member of the 2% club only 2% of people going to the naval academy with their girlfriends graduate and married their girlfriends and jimmy carter was a member of that deletes club as well. it is only fitting they are at naval station norfolk the carter's were remembered. certainly rosalynn carter 77 years. we have a statement from the carter center cindy former first lady was a champion of mental health caregiving, women's rights, president carter and his statstatement says rosalynn wasy equal partner and everything i ever accomplished. she gave me a wise counsel and encouragement when i needed it. as long as rosa was in the world i always knew someone loved and supported maybe she is survived

by four children jack, chip, jeff, and amy. eleven grandchildren and also 14 great-grandchildren. one of her sons, chip said the statement besides being a loving mother and extraordinary first lady my mother was a great humanitarian in her own right. a life of service and compassion was an example for all americans. she will be sorely missed not only by our family but the many people have better mental health care and access to resources for caregiving today. while she certainly lived a long life only bessette truman as first that it lived longer than 97 the fax rosalynn carter led to 96 says so much about her life. it's only a few days ago we heard she was entering hospice. so why it might come as a surprise is certainly living until 96 may we all live a full life on that long. >> that she certainly did a full life indeed. it's a part of a title of one of the books jimmy carter roper he

was a prolific author of course in 2015 he read a envoys one abt life and the '90s. and in that book you can listen to it. he spoke about her even read out loud one of the poems he wrote for her. i will do one line because you cannot do anything but listen to his voice say the poem but he wrote she'd smile and birds would feel they no longer had to seeing or it may be i failed to hear their song. >> fail we all have a spouse who writes poetry like that and gives it to his mother. >> thank you lucas and now will go to break our thoughts with the family of rosalynn carter.

in the white house and i remember gives known around washington she had changed the tone of the white house. you could not get hard liquor if you went to a public party at the white house. you could get some u.s. wine but no hard liquor because of the steel magnolia and that was rosalynn carter. she really wanted to set a different tone for the white house. less public balls, functions and state dinners and more picnics that was the thing. that is what she was known in washington for at the time. real helper and partner to jimmy carter. he is one of the few first ladies i have heard of an all time that was sent by the president. to foreign countries to speak to foreign leaders and deliver messages.

it's pretty impressive if you stop and think about it. molly: she acted as a personal envoy and traveled throughout latin america as you mentioned and went to cabinet briefings and meetings. that's part of an intriguing history. she is the only first lady other than eleanor roosevelt to ever testify before congress. now think about that she was testifying about mental health issues. owner roosevelt got in a world of hers is eleanor roosevelt and rosalynn carter who's gone up to congress and testified, used their power. on behalf of some issue before the congress. molly: we all know that trail that wa was blazed and things progressed from there. so remarkable in that sense.

and your recollection of that period in time, how was she received? >> oh, very well. it was so different. the thing about rosalynn carter, even then she was viewed as a very serious sober person. i say it sober i told you that story about no hard liquor at the parties. she was a reticent, shy proper lady of a first lady. she's not really allowed a voice she is not a larger president. which of the country she was a larger presence and she did have her issues. she would be in the cabinet meetings and as we said she would go on foreign trips by herself representing the president of the united states. and as you mentioned he would say he has said subsequently but he said at the time that she was his top advisor.

nobody had more influence on him and his wife. molly: it is worth noting that some the lovely pictures of historically being the early era and the white house as you mentioned. when their daughter amy was along as well, still very young at the time for their sons are much older amy was born 20 years into their marriage. she handled all this not just being this remarkable life, living this amazing love story but also being a mother. >> indeed. wear time but putting her mark on the carter presidency one of those marks was she and jimmy decided that amy would go to a d.c. public school which was highly controversial at the time. why is the president said his ss child to public school? as a child going to be okay from the secret service had to protect the kid in the school. but that's what happen they see rosalynn carter send public school, public education just like mental health very

where thousands of people marched today this includes french actors in public personalities pre-take a look at this video you see people at the front of this march holding a white banner it is a symbol for peace others held white flags of the protest this is after massive protests yesterday with thousands of pro- palestinian protesters march through paris in the pouring rain a similar demonstration has happened in ie uk this weekend. just yesterday pro- pulsing andd protesters filled the streets during 100 different events. several of them happened in london were just over a week ago through the thousand people marched across the city in support of the palestinian people. protest also happened in glasco, in cities across australia including the sydney and melbourne. closer to the battlefield thousands are protesting and i run were of course the government not only funds hamas fed applauds its october 7 attack on israel. you see thousands holding palestinian flags here for a

and are true friends of israel and we appreciate them for that. as we appreciate the great support of president biden now. eric: do you see a parallel to date with the sense of trying to do something that seemed impossible when they get sadat together to achieve at least some sort of peace at some point? what's up cap so that's a huge achievement back then and is today which is really amazing it is important not long for israel and egypt it's important for the whole region. erso for now have the terrace of hamas something since the nazis the world have not seen you have been answering some of the people been tearing down the posters as they do by projecting let's show some of the pictures. by projecting huge posters on top of buildings across the country why have you decided to do that? or how did you start? >> so, the representatives of

the hostages hamas and israel have contacted as to project those images on it buildings it started on the united nations building and of course we could not say no to that. as an israeli here in the u.s. it's very difficult to be here and not be with h our brothers d sisters in israel. so the least we could do is caring those projections. the atrocities that happened on october 7 carried by hamas are not only atrocities against israel but those are crimes against humanity. we wanted to use our means and our profession to bring awareness to what happened by projecting images and names and ages of nine -month-old this building. people that see it can relate and think maybe it could have been my child, could have been my spouse, could have been my
