mother was lost to cancer when he was 18 was not there to celebrate with him. he had got undefeated for four years leading up to the gold as he stood on that podia his heart bursting with national pride he suddenly had a bit of an existenial crisis of. >> thought this odd, like what do i do now? because every day i got up for that goal. and now what i do? i'm standing out there know mike who am i and i'm 25 years old this is my whole identity. i looked over the edge of the podium and it was a cliff. that metal goes around your neck and i'm like this is real big butts hamilton threw himself into professional skating and touring and broadcasting finding enormous success on the decades following the olympics those years also brought the return of a familiar foe, the one that had

taken his mother cancer. and this time he was the one in the fight. >> have got to work but you've got to get past that initial shock and that initial feeling you've just been kicked in the gut. it's all in the response. so the first brain tumor was a prayer the second brain tumor was just devastating. the third brain tumor was we are fine. we are just going to pray all i felt an overwhelming urge to get strong. i didn't know if it was physical, emotional or spiritual so i chose all the above progress he did not choose it for himself alone. he has launched numerous cancer charities and research efforts aimed at equipping patients with data from trusted sources in a format they can easily digest. >> and most people are diagnosed with any disease they google pay. >> the worst possible doctor you can go to progress you sucked

>> those who were before me, they went through a lot of hardship. we look in the scriptures, look what the disciples and the apostles what they went through so that we could have the faith. i can at least go through and no, little rejection. it's a powerful song. the imagery the flag that was raised over the sites in new york, did that come to you? did you have to work on that? what's it all stemmed from a conversation i had with president bush. i was with him six weeks after 911. i would go visit often. and i think he was processing probably just like all of us work. and he looked at me and he said w. is that you need to write a song about this. i am sitting here going how do i do that? >> no pressure. >> i remember saying i will try mr. president. we were walking out of the office i was hoping he would never bring it up again. in six months later i am on my farm i have a big american flag that flies out there. i look up the flag, the wind is blowing it's a beautiful spring day. look up at the flag and had a meltdown i sought it literally weeping and thinking about all
