♪. sandra: welcome back to fox news channel's "west point holiday show." i'm sandra smith at the " beautiful and historic crest hall on the campus of the united hall on the campus of the united as long as there have been soldiers here there has been a band. the army's oldest active duty band is a piece of america's living history. here's a look at its humble beginnings in the 18th century. ♪. the west point band's roots cano beot traced back to the american

revolutionary war. also known as america's great musical war. ♪ the term, band comes from george washingtons banding of fiverr and drummer together in each company. th ae instruments were used to signal the soldiers when to fire their guns. [gunfire] the bugle achieved an increasingly important role in the mid 1800s for the ability of its bold brilliant sound to be heard above the noise of battle. following america's independence only one fiverr and drummer f would reat west point to keep the tradition of military music at the academy. as west point grew so did the demand for military music. fifers, drummers, buglers would

join forces and be instrumental in military camp's daily life. throughout historyth west point cadets have marched to the beat of field music. it was in 1817 when the ensemble was officially named the west point band.bu ♪. by this time they were using a full range of instruments. two bassoons, two royal consent bugles, 10 clarinets, three french horns a serpent, symbols, eight flutes and two trumpets. ♪ over time the iconic group hasic played at historical events worldwide, growing into a source of pride to the army and the nation. ♪.
