[popper pops] [jase laughs] - merry christmas. - who gave you that, si? - hey, i'm fired up, boys, it's christmas time. a savior has been born for this wicked world we live in. - amen. - that was fun. wow. - everybody in the mood? - [jase] i'm really not into the pageantry of christmas but- - what do you mean you ain't into the pageantry? i wish i had a sled pulled by reindeer singing ♪ jingle bells, jingle bells, jingle bells ♪ - what was your childhood christmas like, si? that's what i want to know. - that was back when we would take hickory nuts and momma always ordered the giant california oranges. - si, you remember the little wooden crates that had the dried raisins in 'em? - oh yeah. - that was our treat. - i'm seeing a pattern here. y'all's childhood memories from 110 years ago were fruits and nuts.

that was his favorite thing to eat now, the sweets. - but i'm serious, it was a grand time though. - jep, do you remember when we were kids? my mom did the same thing every year. "no christmas, we're not gonna get any presents." - yeah, hey, he always skipped our house. - yeah, and then every year on christmas day, expectations are low. she got the expectations real low. then you went out there and there it was. - there it is. - so i went in there and told my dad, i was like "there really is a santa claus." he said "no." he said "you're looking at santa claus right here. hard-earned money." - that's right, yeah. - you know, i was [mock wails]. [everyone laughs] i was like "no, the reindeer." and he's like "no, we ate the reindeer." that was my childhood. well now that we're in the christmas spirit, i've got an idea. so my three kids are all in nashville. so here's what i'm gonna invite y'all to do. gather up with the kids, all my kids are there. jep, you bring jessica and your kids.

murry, bring sheila and we'll just have a nashville christmas celebration and we'll start a new tradition. we can treasure hunt in the morning. - oh, i like this plan. - yeah. i like it a lot. - i have some neighbors that have a historical property in a little place called thompson's station and i think that we could actually find a lot of christmas presents. we're shopping in the dirt. - yep. - thompson's station, guys. it was like a one-day battle between the union and confederate forces. there was a lot of calvary involved and a lot of infantry on the union side and they charged each other several times. it should be an amazing place. - sounds like a winner. - yeah. - two treasures in one. we get to spend christmas with you guys and on a battlefield, what could be better? - this is our present, we get to treasure hunt. - si. - what? - end this podcast with a bang. [missy laughs] i have a house in tennessee because three of my kids and two of my grandkids live in the nashville area. so now we have the opportunity to start a new tradition, christmas in tennessee, celebrating the birth of jesus.

we've been truly blessed to have this place and we're happy to share it with our family. - i have a lot left to do because everyone is coming tonight. i'm excited, all the kids will be here. this is a big day. it's not christmas day but it is for me because all my kids and grand babies, so many people are coming in that we're being able to host for. there is a lot to prep. i need jase to help me prep. he better be on his game. can you help me get the tree and set up in the corner right here? - all right. - and then please chop some firewood. - all right, christmas tree, firewood - and a couple other things but we can deal with that later. but those are the two main things. - i'm in, babe, i'm your man. - okay. - who's your man? - you're my man. - the older i get, i guess i realize what my role is in the christmas season but i have become like missy's little elf when it comes to decorating and i'm okay with that.

especially around christmas time. so i'm gonna pray for 'em though. these girls need some prayer. - okay, well y'all get to work and we're gonna get to work. - jep, the pressure's on. - all right, let's do it. let's get some smoke rolling outta here. - [jase] you could smoke a whole reindeer on this thing. - there's a couple things i'm really good at. one of 'em is smoking meats and the smoker i brought is legit. the goal for today is to get these meats on the smoker, help the women where we can and then we're gonna go treasure huntin' and i am itching to get out there and do some treasure huntin' and not just because of this sweater. the meat is on. - meat is on. - awesome. - smell me. - yep. - oh, i love it that smell. - i know. - it smells good. - [jase] that's man's cologne. - we got some festivities we're gonna do too. - and you're gonna keep that fire going. - check on it how often? - every couple hours. just every time you get cold, think "oh, the fire." all right boys, let's go treasure hunting.

did y'all see how i did that? i pulled off the impossible, which is got us away from all the getting ready festivities. - this is a new family tradition. we go treasure hunting on christmas. - [jase] that's it. i feel really good about this place. - [jep] what is this place called? - the homestead manor. - ooh. i'm ready to find some treasure. i'm wanna find some gold. - you're now rookie status, reed. - you're where i was, see? - i'm excited that reed's going with us. he's never treasure hunted. i'm hoping he'll find a passion for it but it's always hard to start doing something you've never done before. it will require patience and a positive attitude. so we'll see how that goes. - here we go, boys. oh my gosh, this place is beautiful. - wow. - amazing. oh my goodness. - look at that horse. - [reed] that thing is huge. - did i tell you it was gonna be awesome?

- [jep] this is awesome. it looks festive. look, there's murry. that's him now. - [murry] hey, hey, hey. - [jase] have you found the christmas spirit out here? - yeah, i have. - merry christmas, murry. - i love that sweater, jep. - [jase] have you figured out the history on this? - i have, this is the site of the battle of thompson's station. the union troops were on that side of the road and that side of the road and the confederates were over here. they charged each other back and forth across this plane right here. - just right behind the house? - yep. the battle at thompson's station was a relatively small skirmish during the civil war. it happened on march the 5th, 1863 at a small railroad terminal called thompson's station. it was between about 5000 confederate calvary and about 3000 union infantry. with several thousand troops here and artillery and cannons involved, there's gotta be a lot of treasure.

it should be christmas come early. and of course, they were fighting all around the house. so naturally, they turned it into a hospital of sorts for a few days. - why don't we start here, go right of the railroad tracks and then work our way back to that part? - i think that's what we need to do. - i'm gonna make you a pro by the end of the day. - well, how hard can it be? beep-beep, dig it up. - [murry] it's harder than it looks, trust me. [upbeat ensemble piano music] [detector beeps] - oh. what is that, a lock? oh, i thought this was a lock or something. i ain't sure what that is. looks like a little baby stirrup. [detector beeps] this is a stirrup for elves. [detector beeps] - oh, i got something, murry. come look at this. - hey man, that's a ring. - that's a ring. - [murry] you're kidding me. - what is it, no diamond? - man. - i heard y'all hollering, what happened? - he's found a ring. - hey. - look at that. - that's a diamond ring. - yeah.

[everyone laughs] i've learned the older i get, i have more fun when my kids, now my son-in-law are having fun more than i am. i wanna see them find stuff that they've never found before. so austin's having a great time, which means i'm having a great time and honestly, it's all about family. so we're having a blast. ♪ i hear them high tones ring-a-ling ♪ ♪ ding-ding-ding-a-ling-ding ♪ it's a lovely day for me to find some treasure today ♪ ♪ dig it up, dig it up, dig it up, let's go ♪ [upbeat rock music]

- i have got to get that crawfish pie started. - if you guys figure it out, then you teach me how to do it later. - yes. - carry on the traditions. - yeah. - there's so many different cajun recipes that phil and kay have cooked through the years but crawfish pie is my favorite. so if i'm gonna continue this tradition of the cajun cooking on christmas, i mean, why not start with my favorite? i think crawfish is one of the best- tasting creations that god made. i just don't know who the first person was to actually try it. who looked at a mud bug and said "yeah, that's gonna be delicious?" - i don't know, but i'm glad they did. one of the best things about christmas is the food. but it's really one of the best things about getting together with any group of robertsons. food is super important to us. spoons, i'm gonna need a pastry cutter for sure. - i thought i would just do the filling, if i can lean on you to do the crust.

[detector beeps] it feels like trash. and it is, it is. this is literally a debris field. reed, let's get outta here, let's go to the battlefield. we need to find this battleground. wherever the battle took place, that's where i want to be. - this is six inches deep. - i'm telling you, it's trash. [mysterious ensemble music] [detector beeps] - ooh. ♪ digging a hole, checking it twice ♪ this could be a treasure hunter's paradise. [detector beeps] something big. lookie there, heck yeah. i think this is an old doorknob or something. this probably came out of the house. that was an old hospital.

- this is a little more stressful than i thought now. shoot. - i consider missy and i to be pretty good cooks but miss kay kinda set the bar up high and we're on a scale about here. it's so strange, egg in a pie crust? - i mean, if that's what it says. - i know. i mean, miss kay's crawfish pie is actually like a delicacy in the family. - just call her. - that would make me feel better. - yeah. - let me just- - here's my phone, just call her from here. - i really don't even know if she's shared any secrets. some cooks always leave out one or two key ingredients just so you can't make it as good as they do. but i'm really hoping that we can and i'm really hoping she'll share. she'll be so shocked at what we're doing. - [missy] hopefully she's home. - there she is, hey. - what are y'all doing? - we're cooking a louisiana christmas. we're doing your crawfish pie recipe. - good, it's delicious. everybody loves that pie. - me, it's my favorite. - well my question is i'm taking over

the pie crust but i was unsure about the egg 'cause i don't use egg or vinegar in my pie crust. so do i do it exactly like the recipe says? - the egg just makes it better. everything tastes better cooked with an egg. - that's so true. - and the vinegar is for preserving. - okay. - and if i know y'all and the men you're married to, it's not gonna last long anyway. - that's true. - but only if it's good. - well, i bet my money that y'all can do it. - aww. - just as good as mine. - i can't wait to see you. - i love y'all and i miss y'all just thinking about you but you look pretty and i know you're coming home soon. - well, we'll take a picture of the finished product and we'll show it to you when we get home. - perfect. - all right, love you. - bye. - so cute. - i know. - okay, i feel better. - it looks like a bullet, guys. austin. - what you got? - look at that little short, fat thing. - [austin] oh man. - you see how short and fat it is? - yeah. - it looks like a 69 caliber but it's real short. - yeah. - and there was one bullet that was like that during the civil war. - yeah? - and it was from france. have you got a knife with you? - yeah, i got one right here. - all right, if this has a triangle instead of a round cone-shaped plug in it, it's for sure the french bullet and these were only used by the confederates. - [austin] oh, really? - hey, it's a triangle. - oh, look at that. - yeah, look at that. i've dug thousands of bullets. - yeah? - and that's the first one i've ever actually laid my eyes on. yes, yes, yes. - oh ho, let's go. - i mean, that came on a ship from france all the way to the confederacy, around the blockades, came ashore somewhere, charleston or wherever and i bet it was just a few thousand of 'em.

i am so excited because my kids are coming into town this afternoon and missy's kids are coming in and we get to get all the cousins back together. golly, it's like a spa up in here, i'm getting a facial. it's gonna be super special. all right, the smoker is looking good. - awesome. - what do we need to do? - just check these babies. - ooh. oh my gosh, they smell really good. - i smell the crust, it smells great. okay, yeah. if they're half as good as they look, we're in the clear.
