in the aircraft carrier uss dwight d eisenhower destroyer greatly returned fire sinking three of the gunboats killing all crewmembers aboard. one managed to escape. both helicopters returned to the ships unharmed. >> lucas turning to the economy in the new year they were encouraging numbers but they do not seem to be resonating with main street or the voters. majority have a negative opinion of president biden's handling of the economy. what can you tell us? >> mike, the economist on the reasons president biden's approval rating have plummeted, having the lowest approval rating of any president running for reelection since the end of world war ii. a majority of democrats do not want him to seek reelection. a vast majority of americans think he is too old for the job. >> president biden ended the year feeling upbeat about the economy. >> it is all good. take a look. a recent fox news poll says a majority of his own party

disagrees. 61% of democrats say the economy is in bad shape 85% of independents agree. and only 14% of voters say the president's economic policies have helped them. about half say they have hurt them in st. croix the president boasted one more great year in the books and listed a number of what he called his major accomplishments. sankey tackled inflation and lower costs and created good jobs. he did not mention the big year on wall street. the doll finishing up nearly 14% higher the s&p 500 increased by 24% over the past year. >> it has been a petty or no question about it. inflation hasn't come down from 9% now we're down to 3.5% inflation. that is still too high for people per. >> the rate of inflation has dropped from its 40 year high many americans are still feeling the pain of high prices. a recent report said americans seem to make an extra $11000 a

year to keep up with inflation. to pay the bills americans have racked up over $1 trillion in credit card debt. >> every average american is in the stick their hand in their pocket in the bite administration you have far less of a header in the trump administration. >> president biden returns to washington he faces a grueling reelection campaign in 2024. >> lucas tomlinson reporting from st. croix at many thanks. joining us now council of economic advisors chair jared bernstein. welcome. >> thank you, mike. a happy and prosperous new year to you and all of our viewers. from the fox pole in the next year 22% say get better, 44% said they expect the economy to get worse. how troubling is that heading into an election year? >> new year's day a good place to start is let's look at what folks were saying last new year's assuring us was

inevitable. and that the unemployment rate would have to rise have many points in order to get inflation down. go back a year end a half and it was north of $5 a gallon. there is no recession. has been below for 22 months in a row. the price of gas this morning at $3.11 on average. and below in 28 states. this combination of lowering inflation and inflation is a solid glide path to the pre-pandemic rates. this combination of tight labor markets and easing prices had led to real wage gains. on a yearly basis nine months in a row. that's a trend not a blip. why isn't that reaching more

americans? the two most closely watched measures of consumer sentiment and consumer sentiment they rose big time in december. up 10% and other whopping 14%. that is one month that certain suggestive the relief to families like the one he grew up in our working and people are starting to feel it. >> more fennec fox pole only 14% say they've been helped by president biden 46% that helped number has dipped from december 21 and 22. i do think they're upset? >> people have been through a lot over the past few years a 100 year pandemic, a global supply chain that led to geopolitical conflict and so on.

some of that is definitely in the mix. you have to look at what people say. i pay a lot of attention to that. they are the best arbiters of their views of the economy. we also have to look at what people do. if you look at the last couple of months from november 1 to christmas eve we saw spending at restaurants go up 8%. that is less than two months. we saw spending online sales go up 6%. overall retail spending very strong christmas season. huge gains people of color. we don't start businesses at this rate i'm conference where were going the trend and the economy. real wage gains for nine months in a row year over year for mid-level workers i think you see some real momentum in the

good start for the new year. that may reference to spending the set up piece was talk about the ballooning credit card debt in this country. is that a potential trouble spot down the road? >> it's obviously something we want to look at. one of things we want to see has been very important middle and lower income people as well. in fact for people and communities of color we have seen a record numbers of increase in wealth. that's one of the reasons why households balance sheets have actually been in very good shape this time of year. some of what you're calling ballooning is really a return to normal levels of credit card delinquencies or debt levels. but if you actually look at how much it costs even as interest rates have gone up there and quite good shape. in fact if you look at after-tax or disposable income, that is up

3.7% over the past year. that is on the tailwinds it's helping support consumer spending. now remember, we are in economy at 70% consumer spending. with the strong tail wind of this job market behind consumers, with easing inflation coming back to where it was pre-pandemic, with lowered prices and eggs, tvs, toys, airfare, used cars, that is really starting to make a difference to families. some of that is showing up in confidence measures we saw that this month. let's be forward-looking as we are about to start a new year. what's the president's plan with the economy if elected to second term? >> two words for you, lowering costs. lowering the cost of insulin. make sure the measure is this a president legislated to keep down the price of prescription drugs, of health care coverage, to continue fighting against junk fees whether they are at concert events, airfares, banks,

hotels, to continue to build on the progress we have made great not just lower inflation but actual lower costs in key areas of consumer spending. it's very important to look at a contrast between who this president is fighting for it looks to us like their economic agenda going into 24 is to cut taxes for millionaires and billionaires to repeal this president's legislative measures to lower the cost of lint insulin. to lower the cost of prescription drugs for you to lower the cost of clean energy and health coverage and defend the irs so millionaires and billionaires will continue to evade hundreds of the billions of dollars in taxes. if you look at who is fighting for home i think it is pretty clear. >> what about the debt? 33.9 trillion and growing is not sustainable. >> totally a fair point and a big issue for the coming year when we'll have our budget out in a couple of years i'm sorry in a couple of months. that budget will show deficit

reduction under this president. he has a proposal on time at the last budget now to reduce by 2.5 trillion over 10 years we need congress to work with us. by returning fairness to the tax code nobody under $400,000 would pay a dime in taxes. many of whom i just suggested have been debating hundreds of billions of dollars of taxes. we know republicans are trying to cut back the irs funding that would help to reduce the tax evasion and close the tax gap. our idea is to lower the cost it is not just high end it tax increases it is to lower the cost of prescription drugs cost at insulin, healthcare coverage again measures that look to us like the opposition wants to repeal. that is going the wrong way it raises the budget deficit, we

how do we make americans realize the biting economy is actually pretty strong. americans just don't see it that way. mike: julia help vulnerable to these make the president of the upcoming election? >> and make them very vulnerable by the economy is one of the top priorities both voters tend to vote on if this is a trump versus bite in a matchup in polling would seem to suggest that trump can easily look back on his pre-pandemic economic numbers and point to low inflation and a low unemployment throughout that. that makes biden vulnerable. i've the biting campaign the trumps economy during the pandemic. but i think at the end of the day it still about issue for president biden. mike: it was a rabbit or the clinton era it's the economy, stupid breed of voters do not be like the economy is strong, i know what wall street is heading up, mortgage rates are coming down but if people do not feel it, is the president in trouble? >> yes if people have to feel there is some improvement. and in the poll numbers we've

gone over this morning, the poll numbers from box of the good news for biden is that it is headed in the right direction people fill better about 2023 then they do about 2022 and way better than they did about 2020. the numbers are still low. but again if you look at some of the real world experiences that we have every day at the gas pump or buying eggs and bread, you start to see these prices going down and americans have reason to think things are getting a little better. the other part of this conversation is, julia touched on it pre-pandemic. people understand we went through something that was pretty horrible that had damage done. biden has on them to work with here. all the numbers that jared bernstein went through this morning are what you're going to hear on the campaign trail. and he is right's consumer confidence, consumer sentiment is up and december. holiday spending is up. and he is going to talk not just

appeals. the trump legal team plans to file their appeals against the two states on tuesday. >> my first and foremost obligation is my oath to uphold the constitution and the rule of law. >> the already groundbreaking effort by some states to challenge for president trump some ballot eligibility, maine's decision stands out to read secretary of state unilaterally ruled to disqualify trump in colorado the decision came from the state supreme court. according to the trump campaign quote we are witnessing in real time the attempted theft of an election the disenfranchisement of the american voter. there are currently 13 states with lawsuit seeking to bar trump from the gop primary ballots. they all lead on eight single war era provision in the constitution that bans a person engaged in insurrection from holding public office. an appeal by colorado republican party leaves interpreting the 155-year-old claws up to the u.s. supreme court's.

for now trump's name will appear on colorado's primary ballots unless the high court sides with colorado's earlier decision to kick him off. >> i think the court will see this for what it is which is a distinctly antidemocratic effort to win this election and the courts rather than polling places for. >> california secretary of state shirley weber declined efforts to have trump's name will move from ballots this week. telling the los angeles times quote i have to basically continue to abide by the rule of law. and for me not to do that than i am no better than trump. >> this is interesting if you total up the states were trump has been disqualified from the ballot or efforts to do so are pending it comes out to 171 electoral votes that is out of 5:30 eight. >> thanks very much. we'll bring back our channel and molly this action places like colorado and maintenance at risk of this backfiring on democrats

and only helping former president trump? >> clearly it is already backfiring. there is a general democrat strategy to bring criminal or civil charges against the president who tried to steal his family business. try to remove his name from the ballots. this is viewed by a lot of americans as completely unfair and antidemocratic. in the united states we complain about other countries not practicing free and fair elections usually that means they have removed the opposition party from the ballot for they have tried to improve the opposition party members but the idea americans won't be able to vote for the candidate of their choice does not reflect well on the democrat party. or ssuch a player, for a presidential candidate florida governor ron desantis. >> it opens up pandora's box. can you have a republican secretary of state disqualified biden from the bout because he has let in 8 million people illegally a massive invasion. i think we win when we hold

biden accountable and talk about the issues that matter to the american people so they democrats want the election to be about all of these other issues they do not want to face accountability for their failed policies. mike: juan, wearing on the ballot issue? >> the problem here in the case of maine it was right in the law. she has the power as the secretary of state sheet looked at the law and said without a doubt it insurrection took place in this country and generally six, 2021. there is violence at the capitol she saw donald trump as having a key role in that insurrection therefore said he cannot run on the main ballot. there's a similar finding in colorado. the problem for republicans is they said this is a matter of politics. this is like a sum of third world country pushing your political opponents up the ballot. but in reality i cannot think of another country were a political leader would try to overthrow the government and then come back and say i'm running for

president. i think most of them would say put that guy in jail for. >> at this country we call due process if you believe sum has committed a crime you charge them with a crime. you have a trial related to that crime you convict them for it what's happening in the situation you have unelected justices on the colorado supreme court all appointed by democrats in a democrats decorative state. unilaterally deciding to claim a protest is somehow related. >> this constitution. >> us not how our country operates and we talk about due process and cause additional protection for. on about what happened that day this election is not just going to about the economy it's not just going to be about israel and the foreign policy. it's going to be about what happened at the end of former president trump's term in office. mike: of ucd evidence of these legal cases have any drag on the former president's campaign? >> no. fax it seems to have made him stronger in the republican primary. he is leading in iowa, new hampshire, at the national level. he's the victim of a legal and political establishment in this country. if he's the nominee i'm curious to see if voters look at that more noise from inside of washington it is an interesting position when you have trump going through his own legal issues and the sitting president sonic going through other legal issues. i'm curious to see whether voters at the end of the day think is is noise or something to look into for. >> what about the hunter biden

impact on the biden campaign going forward. house republicans considering going after the president in terms of impeachment. >> hunter biden is the president son he is not the president. and clearly he is a very troubled person, even to the point of addiction and trouble you can see online if you have eight lurid interests. it seems to me so far i am open to see what is going on. he is a tax cheat go get him i say and i say that from either side of the political aisle. when you look at what they are suggesting is the basis for impeaching the president of the united states i think the republicans so far are looking for smoke because they believe there is a fire. but so far they do not even have smoke. they do not have anything. i think in large part that looks like they are acting as if they are political extensions of the trump campaign and trying to create an equivalence between what is going on with all the

legal troubles that afflicted president trump, rudy giuliani being found guilty of a hundred $40 million i believe, sidney powell, janet ellis, all on the trump site and saying that similar to us going out the democrats. but so far there is no evidence. >> the problem for present pioneers to problems. one is the biden family business for the biden family business traded on the name of joe biden, the president they got a a lot of money from foreign oligarchs and foreign entities. i would not exist about joe but it mutes that he is intimately involved you now have receipts showing some money from this business didn't make it to the biden family. more troubling is this other issue that every step of the way when official start looking into the family business they were obstructed and shut down. even quite recently you had president biden admitting he knew hunter biden plan to object

seems like we are headed toward a trump versus biden rematch. that being said though, i really have my eye on new hampshire. i know we are talking about iowa because it is first. but new hampshire is still interesting to me because you have trump and haley in second place for the hill decision desk average shows about 17 points behind trump. that is still eight lots but you have christie at 10%. so if christie were to drop out he's given no indication he will that would bump haley much closer to trump. now before the drama and the fallout from her comments about slavery and the civil war, i think we were talking a lot about the possibility. but christie sort of dug into that. he's given no indication is dropping out. i think we are going toward a race for second place. but new hampshire is one to watch free. >> jeff, how do you see it? >> it's been a race for second place the entire year for former president trump has been ahead in the polls and all of these places it is not shown up in the

debates for a reason he is not needed to. there might be surprises pretty think it's important to remind all of us that polls have been wrong. we certainly saw them wrong in 2016 and there could be some voters who are saying what they're going to do or have not decided. the polling largely -- the difference between these candidates is so huge. it is pretty hard to imagine is not a trump and biden 2024 race. mike: what about some of the pressure on the republican candidates to get out to make it a 2% race on the republican side? >> to the point that was just made it would help nikki haley of chris christie got out. it does not really seemed like it would change everything altogether that much anyway. even if ron desantis pulled out a miracle and got close in iowa and if nikki haley wins in new hampshire it does not change the contours of the race that much. the american voter, the republican party voter remix seems to have committed to

president trump. he is essentially going to run this in incumbents. and if anything it would seem there is more support for donald trump being the nominee of the republican party then there is for joe biden to be the nominee of the democrat party. cocook swan, our democrat's rigt to be worried about potential third-party candidates? >> they certainly are. they would drain his support from president biden formoso them president trump. you look at joe kennedy ex- rfk junior excuse me. that might be a little different. but, you look at the history of this and you look at people going back to john anderson. you think about ross perot he got 19%. john anderson about 7%. in more recent years you think about gary johnson. they are all done in single digits these people are spoilers they are not winners and the idea is they would spoil it and most likely spoil for joe biden. mike: a right panel great job happy new year.
