>> ainsley: go, brian, you've got it. do one hand. okay, brian. marie said she'll try it. we'll add it to your bucket list. >> brian: tell us how it's going. >> steve: marie, thank you. madison square garden. we love you guys. >> these numbers are historic.
6:01 am
there are eight rose bowls full of illegal immigrants that came across the border just since october 1st, mr. secretary. >> bret, the numbers are historic. the numbers are extraordinarily large. this is something that is not specific to the united states southern border. >> bret: but you think it is a crisis now? >> bret, it is a challenge that we have been addressing vigorously with all the tools and resources we have been provided. >> bill: a challenge, not a crisis. his hands are tied, don't blame us. those were the answers from secretary mayorkas saying there is nothing more he can do on the border. illegal migrants totally unchecked one after the other. good morning, it's friday. you've almost made it. 9:00 a.m. in new york. i'm bill hemmer. >> dana: can i say one thing
6:02 am
about that interview? peter and i watched it last night. peter is from europe. when mayorkas mayorkas said this is not a problem not unique to america. he is talking about the scope and scale. it is so different in america. these illegal crossings are reaching record levels under president biden. it made every town a border town including new york city. >> bill: we've seen it for some time. the crisis has prompted the mayor of new york, eric adams, to actually sue more than a dozen bus companies for bringing in migrants from texas. he is looking to recoup more than $7 hundred million the city is spending on housing. governor greg abbott out of texas calls the suit baseless. >> dana: abbott has sent more than 90,000 migrants to sanctuary cities. just this week human smugglers led officers on a high speed chase. the dangerous trend that has become all too common.
6:03 am
>> bill: we'll get reaction from kinney county sheriff in texas. casey stiegel reports in eagle pass today. but let's start with peter doocy at the white house with reaction to an interview that might be a preview of more to come maybe midweek next week. peter, good morning there. hello. >> big time. the line of the week at the white house continues to be they can fix the border, they just need more money. >> the president has submitted a supplemental funding request to congress for more border patrol agents, for more technology, for more immigration judges, for more detention capacity. we are seeking to enforce the laws that congress has passed. until they fix those broken laws that haven't been reformed in more than 30 years. >> but within the last hour speaker johnson's office tells us the president's supplemental request is little more than
6:04 am
misdirection and false advertising that would do little to secure the border. of the $14 billion request just over 2.3 billion would actually go to border patrol operations. of that funding, much of it falls within the parameters of managing crisis, processing tents, consumables that have little to do with actual border security. white house officials are claiming nothing has happened recently because of the calendar congress drew up for themselves. >> they left in mid- december. who was left to continue to have the conversation as it relates to the border was the senate. and we're having conversations with both republicans and democrats in the senate. >> we're told the conversations do not include the president himself. he will have his first event of the week today. it is friday. so time for a policy event. it is going to be warning about the dangers a second trump term
6:05 am
poses to american democracy. >> bill: back to pennsylvania he rides again and again. thank you, peter, preview of the election in november. >> dana: migrant crisis is overwhelming people along the border. look at this exclusive new video. smugglers bringing migrants into the u.s. through a breach in the wall and pulling out cameras to record their making it through in lukeville, arizona where we find senior correspondent casey stiegel. one of the things that a reporter from mexico said is they take the selfie to show family back home that they made it safe life across and it is encouraging others to make the trip. >> that's right. it's essentially proof that they've gotten their cargo across into the united states. as we prepare now to close out the first full week of a brand-new calendar year, things are still pretty slow right here in eagle pass, which is part of the del rio sector for the time being. a very different story, as you
6:06 am
were just saying, over in arizona. the tucson sector, lukeville, arizona is the city where you see in in exclusive video shot by fox a stream of migrants yesterday evening coming through a hole that had been cut in the steel border wall by smugglers. in fact, as the long line of migrants illegally made its way through, you can actually see at one point one of the cartel members briefly popped through the fence, clapping at the migrants to keep them moving and also shooting video on his cell phone. you can see the flashlight turned on. most likely gathering proof that his delivery had been made. meantime back here in texas this week dps releasing brand-new video of a high speed chase in web county where two juveniles led troopers on a high speed chase on wednesday. they used a pit maneuver to stop the vehicle where they essentially ram the car.
6:07 am
five migrants were discovered inside. everybody taken into custody. finally in el paso, agents apprehended a migrant who had been convicted of murder in columbia back in 2015. he had been arrested by u.s. agents and will be prosecuted for illegal entry and deported. that according to the u.s. border patrol chief. so once again, no rest for the weary for those out here on the front lines of this crisis. dana. >> dana: thank you, casey stiegel live in eagle pass. >> bill: let's bring there the kinney county sheriff. looking at your location you're south of del rio, west of uvalde. your area is largely rule. you have seen the crisis firsthand. our mayor in new york is suing for a lot of money, okay? what has this cost you and your people? >> good morning. it's costing me a fortune here. thank god for governor abbott
6:08 am
giving us additional couple million dollars to kinney county to handle the overtime and extra equipment to fight this because the federal government won't. >> dana: what about something that we talked about a little earlier and that is the other crimes that surround this. for example, the high-speed chases that put people in danger. how are you dealing with that as a sheriff especially when it is putting your citizens, taxpayers at risk? >> well, last year alone from january 1st to december 31st i've got six full-time deputies. those guys were involved in over 260 high speed pursuits just for that year. >> bill: six guys, 260. >> that's almost one a day. my residents have to be -- >> bill: how did the high speed chases turn out? what happened at the end? >> we caught 90% of them. a few times we've been outrun but it puts my school at risk.
6:09 am
our school sits on the main corridor through town and residents at risk keep an eye on the rearview mirror at all times so they don't get pushed off the road by the smugglers. >> dana: last night mayorkas was on with bret baier. it was frustrating to watch. mayorkas insists the border is closed, they're do what they can. a challenge, not a crisis and just because they need more money and then all of a sudden as if mayorkas will wave a magic wand. say congress gave him a ton more money, what would change if there is no policy change? >> nothing would change. there is one man that i know for sure that can stop this and he is the chief of the border patrol. i've known chief owens for a while. he has the knowledge and capability. they won't let him do his job. >> dana: what are they preventing him from doing if you picked your top two or three things. >> the authority to prosecute
6:10 am
them for illegal entry and file expedited removals on these people coming across illegally. we did it before and it worked. >> bill: this has gone round and round for the past three years. would you expect anything to change before november, if even then? >> i expect it to get worse before november. if trump is reelected as president i guarantee from the election from the time of his election we'll see a tsunami. >> dana: as a sheriff it must burn you up because of the coyotes. they have full operational control of the border. the southern border is going to suffer. >> bill: you're not entirely defenseless but close to it. thank you for your time today.
6:11 am
kinney county, texas, he is dealing with this every day. the video going through the wall again. we went to yuma about a year ago it was a big topic how cartels can cut holes in the wall in the middle of the night. so the idea was 2019, 2020 was to station large light poles with cameras underneath each light and they were 50 to 100 yards. all the cameras were installed and lights were installed. the cameras were never turned on after 2020, never used. >> dana: when you look at the video of these people. their lives were probably horrible but they are not political asylum seekers. they are economic migrants and that is not in the cards. it is just not. >> bill: that right there is the smuggler's salute we've seen before with the iphone. we have something across the

presidential primaries between iowa and new hampshire. >> look, it was a small flub but it overlooks the reality that nikki haley is doing quite well in iowa and has a real chance to overtake florida governor ron desantis in the state. that's the big battle for this presidential campaign. for her to do well she needs to beat desantis in iowa and more favorable turf in the new hampshire primary where moderates and independents can participate. look, that was a mistake. you never want to diss a state you are competing in. the fox polls, it is a dead heat for second place. desantis 18%, haley 16%. it is a real contest and why you see the punches fly. >> dana: cliff, how do you see it? >> much adieu about nothing. the insider baseball noise that voters don't like. they are worried about real

6:35 am
three months. the payroll survey was up 216, you are quite right. the household survey, which you get the unemployment rate from, that thing was down 700,000 or -- 676,000. the labor force shrunk by an enormous amount. so participation rates fell. the employment to population rate fell, and almost all the jobs after the downward revision, which was 71,000, so it is 216 minus 71 call it 170,000. again, as we've seen in recent months, it's all government, leisure and healthcare. you don't see anything much in manufacturing. in fact, manufacturing has been flat for over a year. so it's actually you will see the stock market coming back and the bond market coming back. it is not near as strong a number and a lot of the analysts are saying it's a rather soft
6:36 am
number. i hope i got all that out. >> bill: i was watching your colleagues on fox business, participation went down, not a good sign. of the government jobs, when you add 52,000 that's part of the big number here. what does it say about the private sector, larry? >> well, the private sector is pretty much been flat. that's one of the themes of this year. i will have to look, bill, when i get -- catch a breath and i will look at the 12-month changes for all of 2023. but i think what you are going to see is the leader will either be government jobs or leisure jobs. there is nothing wrong with leisure jobs, it shows post covid consumer spending with a lot of credit card borrowing thrown in and healthcare jobs, social services, which are the near cousin to government jobs.
6:37 am
to summarize, i mean, private sector manufacturing has pretty much been soft or flat for the entire year. so that's not a good thing. you have to distinguish -- it's not what anybody wants. you are not really producing. we produce to consume. you are not really producing and that is a problem. i don't think anybody likes that. i think that frankly has something to do with subsidized spending and also very heavy regulations. so, you know, look, the best thing if i were biden and he doesn't call me, by the way, just to clarify, if i were him, the number i would tout average hourly earnings were up 4/ten. they are up 4% for the year. that is above the inflation right for the past couple of
6:38 am
months. so that's a good thing. the trouble for mr. biden is going back for the three years of his presidency, there is an affordability problem. middle class wages adjusted for inflation have fallen. they've fallen by $20 or 5%. that's a long stretch for a decline in real wages. the middle class and the lower incomes have suffered. i call it the affordability crisis. even though inflation has cooled, that's a good thing, prices are still way above where they were three years ago, all right? cpi is up 17%. groceries up 20%, that sort of thing. you look at these job numbers, you have to look at it in that context. you can't look at them in isolation. i think you will see a wall street consensus -- i want to be very fair here -- that the payroll number, the top line
6:39 am
number that dana mentioned is a little misleading because of the downward revisions, point number one. point number two, the household number, small business, has been falling substantially of late. nearly 700,000 decline. and number three, this is a softer number than the headline would suggest. i don't know if that makes any sense at all. >> dana: it does. those revisions are important. good context. larry kudlow, thank you and happy new year. >> bill: thank you, larry. >> dana reads sports. >> dana: like mother, like son. eric coal wins pga tour rookie of the year. accomplishment comes 50 years after his mom did the same in the lpga. the proud mom tweeting this photo with the caption so cool. cole is the second olders winner
