now and, remember, mornings are better with friends. ♪ ♪ >> how long have we been talking about this the iowa caucuses as you look live at downtown des moines, iowa. good morning, america. this is it on this monday, january 15th it all comes down to iowa. where it all comes down to the weather as well. i am live in des moines at the river center not too far from the confluence of the des moines river and the raccoon river right here in des moines where it's all going to get started. i'm going to be at the caucuses in 14 hours, lawrence. >> lawrence: i'm here at lucky's in cedar rapids. the folks are come in. they are getting through the weather. but they want their voices to be heard. >> we will be talking with folks

all morning if you are in the local area and want the candidates to still earn your voted and want to let them know how you feel about the issues of today. come out to lucky's. we would love to have you. >> how cold is it there, guys. did you all bring boots and nice warm coats and gloves? >> steve: you have no idea. lawrence, i will start. it's pretty warm here at the river center. i'm wearing a vest. i'm wearing a wool sweater. i have got a shirt. i have got some lining under that as well. my wife bought me some boots. i don't know if you can see them. according to ll beaten i think they are good to 50 degrees below zero and today we need them because right now the current air temperature outside is 16 degrees below zero. that's not the wind capitol win. the wind chill is 35 degrees below zero. that is ultimately -- this will be the coldest iowa caucuses in history. it all comes down to are people willing to essentially, in some cases, put their life at risk,

you know, if they have got to drive 20 miles to a caucus location is it worth it to them with their personal safety to go out tonight in the middle of the dark whether it's going to be 7 degrees below zero to caucus for their favorite candidate? >> brian: 1700 caucus sites. 150,000 people. i can't believe it's going to come down to just that, 150,000 people is considered a very good turnout. so, i mean, to think about the impact of the 150,000, i mean, if trump get over 50. it's historic. if ron desantis finishes third he might be done. so governor haley if she can maybe drum some people up that haven't been voting in the past, that might be good or doing enough. she is going to new hampshire. and vivek ramaswamy says expect surprises. >> ainsley: lawrence, many there are worried about enthusiasm because it's going to be so cold. the national weather service says the wind chills could cause frost bite on exposed skin in as

little as 10 minutes. what are you hearing on the ground. i don't know if you have heard the people in the diner. are they enthusiastic? are they going to go snout. >> lawrence: such great question, ainsley. and just to demonstrate it for you later on in the show, we put a shirt outside. and it was frozen within about 10 minutes. that just shows you exactly what the people are experiencing. >> brian: did you wet it? >> lawrence: we did wet it. we did wet it. and it can dance almost. but the people we spoke to yesterday. the people that we have already today and last night traveled across the state already these diners heading to. they are fired up about their candidate. we talked with some nikki haley supporter. ron desantis, if you listen to the desantis camp, they are expecting an upset. if you are talking to the trump voters they tell you that the about the is going to win decisively. he has the majority of the people remembering the trump

years. they weren't that far ago. but, when you talk to desantis he says my ground game is the best look at the brand new iowa register poll came out, desantis' voter are the most enthusiastic. the x factor for today is and we have talked trying to get out the people i was born in iowa so i know what it looks like. flying in, it was just a sheet of snow. there are only occasional rural roads, the gravel roads that a lot of trump voters live on. not all of them are plowed. i just yelled up at governor kim reynolds. sheup stairs right now. she is going to be with us in 20 minutes.

[chanting u.s.a.] >> brian: you heard the chant at the end. that is because trump does enthusiasm. 9 for haley. and in terms of evangelicals, which i find fascinating, over 50% of evangelicals are going for trump. >> ainsley: desantis gets a left the evangelicals. nikki haley gets independents and votes from democrats. the strongest groups for trump, christians, registered republicans, first time caucus goers and likely caucus goers without college degrees. >> that's right. and speaking of evangelicals. yesterday, ron desantis picked up the endorsements for 50 new evangelical, rather pastors and

faith leaders for a total of 150 and they will caucus for him tonight. >> last week donald trump announced 300 endorse'ments so far. and bob vander plaats who is very influential here in iowa. one of the faith leaders. he has been with ron desantis. he is being bold. >> he says ron desantis will win but only with the help of iowa voters. lawrence? >> yeah, so, it's interesting we are going hotel to hotel and also seeing the campaign staff as well as the average day voter here as well. and so i was talking with some of the nikki haley crowd yesterday, before we went to bed. and they were saying when they are new yorking on doors, they are hearing democrats say that they are going to cross over and vote for them. i said how do you think so that's going to play when it comes to republican voters, too? we talked with some folks, some other republican voters and they said they don't necessarily like that. but the haley camp think that's

their secret weapon. ramaswamy thinks there is this young vote that he has been speaking. to say actually, can you see it. you can see those young people at his event that typically don't vote in the caucus. he thinks he is going to get upset with those people. >> ainsley: how about marco rubio endorsing trump yesterday. the two senators from florida rick scott and marco rubio endorsing trump. >> brian: 100,000 republicans have gone to iowa since the last time trump ran. the question is who those 100,000 vote for it. looks like trump wants to get over 50% and go for the k.o. no incumbent republican has ever won iowa and new hampshire, ever. so, he is looking to look it clear that he is the person and nikki haley is trying to say to everybody look out for me i'm coming. and ron desantis says you'll be surprised. >> steve: right. because, if the winner of the iowa cuxes always went on to win

the primary and then become president, today we could have president buttigieg because he is the guy who would be the last time out here at iowa in fact such a mess on the democratic side last time and joe biden came in fourth, keep in mind. it took days to actually figure out who won. that is why they simply are not caucusing in the traditional way where there is a great big room and who is for martin o'malley stand over here. they're not doing that this time. it will be a regular primary. the results will be announced on super tuesday. >> ainsley: we have such super show. governor desantis, vivek ramaswamy, and nikki haley. and like steve said earlier, kim reynolds the governor of iowa is, getting ready upstairs. and she will be on in about 20 minutes. >> brian: we have a stretching room where people get to stretch out. >> steve: it's a warming room. >> ainsley: we have been talking about the warm weather. it's bitterly cold in iowa.

wit's hitting every area of the country. artic blast wind capitol hill warnings. >> brian: stay around negative 30 or below through wednesday. i would like, to ainsley, if it's all right with you steve and lawrence. >> brian: i would like to go to janice dean for more. >> janice: summed it up very well. interesting to talk about steve talk about the fact that it's hard to get on the roads. so, we have to be concerned with people trying to get there. and i worry about cars breaking down because, when you have wind chills of negative 20 to negative 30. it doesn't take long for hypothermia to set in and frost bite in some cases 10 minutes if you are outdoors and not protected. here are your high temperatures. this is air temperature, you know, below zero for most of the states across the board. and then with the wind chills, the danger factor is that your body can't deal with the wind and the cold. the heat escapes and that's why

we have the potential for frost bite in 10 minutes if you are outdoors and not dressed accordingly, this is going to be a really dangerous situation. so, not only the cold, but steve is right. you don't have pumps working at the gas station and you can't get on the roads. that's going to be very concerning and it is going to impact caucus travel. so here's the wind chill alerts. not only for the northern plains. but down south towards core tuesday christie. another huge storm we are following. storm impacting texas, mississippi, alabama. up towards tennessee. so measurable snow and ice on the roads this morning. and then the potential for measurable snow in new york city starting into tonight into tomorrow 4 inches we think. that's snow angel weather. i'm excited about that. >> brian: ainsley is the only adult excited about this. >> janice: i am too. we haven't seen measurable snow in new york city for 700 days. >> brian: see the guy in buffalo without a shirt on?

>> carley: four people are dead and one is hurt after a hot air balloon crashed in arizona yesterday. police say around 8 sky divers and five passengers were on board when the balloon took off. >> sky divers were able to exit the balloon without incident and completed their planned skydiving event and then shortly thereafter something catastrophic occurred with the balloon causing it to crash to the ground. >> carley: that is so sad. the cause of this crash still under investigation.

duty officer of any branch in the military to win the miss america pageant. congratulations to her. steve, over to you in iowa. >> steve: all right. thanks very much. here in iowa the high stakes caucuses kicking off a little less than 14 hours right now with donald trump with a gigantic lead right now. but, governor ron desantis has been covering a huge ground ahead of today's crucial hurdle in iowa where key supporters, including our next guest, are still firmly standing behind him. and very excited. joining us right now on this very busy day in this frozen state of iowa governor kim reynolds joins us. >> it is a little nippy out there. welcome to iowa. welcome back. >> steve: thank you very much, governor. we were talking about the conditions. that's the x factor. it's bitterly cold. as i mentioned a moment ago. it's just a sheet of snow out there and a lot of the rural particular areas, the gravel roads have not been grated yet. >> the good news is you know, there's no wind today. so that will help them get back on the roads and get them

cleared and that will help people get out. really the last two days we haven't had as much wind that's really helpful when you are trying to get those people in rural iowa out. >> steve: in fact, you know, your side and i'm going to say that you are on ron desantis' side because you have endorsed him, having people -- having a tough time in the last 24, 48 hours getting people out to knock on doors because of the conditions. although i read in the daily mail one guy knocked on 23,000 doors. >> they're making calls, knock on doors. we have had people from all over the country come to iowa on his behalf. it's been fun to see that and hear the stories of why they decided to come to iowa to help get people out and to support ron desantis. >> steve: okay. so, you know, donald trump could actually hit 50%. if he is above 50 it will be historic. i know the desantis camp is trying to get, you know, shooting for number one. if number one doesn't happen, what does a solid number two look like. >> look, i think it's going to be bad for president trump if he

doesn't come in over 50. s he's not meeting the expectations that the media and the polls have been putting out for the last several months. if ron can get close to that and president trump is below 50, i think he's in the game. i think he's in the best position to meet expectations. the enthusiasm, the energy i'm seeing it on the trail. even with cold weather people have been showing up. and you can feel it. i think he has in the best position for people to break away and we are actually seeing it. this brand new des moines register poll that came out we are talking a little bit about enthusiasm. you can be enthusiastic but you don't show up to caucus. a lot of people are like that. people in my family who live in the state it's too cold. their question was who will definitely caucus? and ron desantis had the number one result with 62% of desantis supporters are going to show up. 56 for trump. and 51% for haley. so they're motivated. somehow it's going to get this it sounds like.

we are hearty. we do cold weather. we do it well. and i have seen it on the trail. he had a pretty good crowd in dubuque about 200. vandz about 100 there. it's cold. they are motivated they know it's important to get this country on track. >> let's take a look at a brand i couldn't abc news poll. one of the motivating factors for a lot of republicans here in iowa is number one thing they want to could is get rid of joe biden. look at approval rating it is 33. that is historically low in the last decade and a half. and the number one reason here in iowa same as everywhere else is the economy. i'm surprised here we are in the center of the plain states upper center issue here is the border. >> the dereliction of duty from this president not to secure the

sovereignty of this country. most importantly the safety of americans and we are seeing not only the human trafficking but the illegal drugs pouring into the state, every single state is a border state when it comes to the drugs. it's intentional, it's unconscionable, and it's economy number one. it's safety on the border number two. we are all seeing the impact. we are at the intersection of 35 and 80. we are a direct route from mexico to iowa to disperse throughout the country. and it's got to stop. it's ridiculous. he is not doing his job. we need somebody on day one can step in and secure that border. >> steve: extraordinarily, one of the people do they iowa caucuses a lot of people will show up tonight on decided, believe it or not, and what happens then is there is somebody from each campaign essentially a caucus captain as the trump campaign calls them. they will speak on behalf of the campaign. that's actually what turns a lot of people. my neighbor just said nice things about such and such a

candidate. since you are endorsing ron desantis, is there anything you would like to say? we're going to have him on, all the candidates. we did invite donald trump. i don't think he is schedule -- his schedule is going to allow him to drop by. what would you like to say on behalf of desantis. >> we need somebody to step in on day one and reverse the madness we have seen and the insanity from the biden administration. look at his record. he is the one true conservative in this race. and he has got a record to back it up. i got to know him during covid. we were on an island of our own during that against immense pressure. he kept the economy open and kids in school. somebody cutting taxes and keeping spending in check and reduced the debt in florida by nearly 25%. the list is long we don't need a somebody what if. we need who has the resolve and spine to make the tough decision that has to be made to get this country back on track that's ron

>> ainsley: this is the coldest iowa caucus ever. the wind chill is expected to see around negative 30 or below through wednesday. so, let's check in with our senior meteorologist janice dean for our fox weather forecast. hey, janice. >> look at it right now some of the coldest air in years for the northern and central complaints look down south across texas. wind chills in the negative five range. and we are dealing with the potential for snow. let's take a look at the coldest wind chills across the u.s. wind chills, that's not air temperature. it's what it feels like if your skin is exposed and you are outside. negative 57 in montana. we have got negative 54 in north dakota. and, of course, we are watching iowa where the wind chills are negative 20 to negative 30 which is dangerous for people to be outside for great length of time. we have wind chill alerts as far as south as co corpus christi, texas. appalachians, the northeast

could get first measurable snow in new york city for 700 days. that's pretty amazing. look at the ice potential for pars of louisiana, mississippi, arkansas, that's very concerning and it's happening right now in terms of iowa we have been covering the coldest caucus on record here are some of the coldest wind chills right now. negative 39. negative 38. you get the picture. if you are dealing with wind chills like that. for an extended period of time. that's when it gets dangerous and that's going to be the concern. that's air temperature right now below zero for most of the big cities in iowa but, again, it's the wind chill that we are concerned with. very dangerous to be outside unprotected. we will keep you up to date. lawrence, my friend, over to you. >> lawrence: thanks, my friend, and look at this. if you look at this, this shows you. this was just outside. this was a t-shirt here at lucky's. we still got room for you though, guys, if you want to come and let your voicing be heard. do you like "fox & friends"?
