desantis is about five points ahead of donald trump. comes down to weather. i showed casuth county, iowa, been talking to my cousins and i asked if the weather would keep them out. my cousin marsha said the weather was a game-changer. if you live on a gravel road, you are taking your life in your hands. however, my cousin mark said iowans are tough and can handle it. to put it in perspective, what a good caucus would be in 2015, trump and cruz were running and cruz won and there were 186,000

showed up out of 600,000 registered. when you think the number is indicative of the state, only one-third showed up for what is essentially a primary. >> brian: 100,000 more in eight years since 2016. trump learned that ground game is importance and they put together an incredible team. a lot have been in court and he would use post-game analysis as campaign stop. >> ainsley: i was talking with staff members and i'm sure you and steve can relate, they were packing warm coats, some had to buy boots, they were buying boots, gloves, hand warmers, did you pack all this?

were you prepared? >> lawrence: i got these boots for iowa. i forgot to try them on at the store. i put them on and they don't fit when i'm getting ready to put them on. on the way to the airport, i asked the driver, can i please stop at the store and try to make my flight. i tried the boots on, they kept everything, i ran out of there and made my flight in time and i'm glad, i have met some people here and they are passionate about issues. one thing donald trump has going for him, they feel there is unfinished business to do and really don't like, they feel they are not -- >> brian: especially trying to kick him off the ballot. >> lawrence: right.

identify as democrat or independent they have to show up, change their registration. will they go to that trouble? we'll see. >> brian: don't be alarmed. shannon, i will throw this to bret because steve asked him a question. bret, do you sense that there is any scenario where ron desantis does not continue? he is saying i'm going to south carolina, go to new hampshire after. do you sense the outcome is on the line for him? >> listen, i know what they are saying publicly. but if he finishes a distant third -- i'm not saying it would happen. it would be a tough thing to sell that i'll skip new hampshire and go to south carolina. they're saying publicly and he is saying he has events, he is going to do tv, a lot of things, but it would be tough.

i think the big question tonight is turnout but older folks especially in this weather. i don't think most folks are saying it is going to prevent me but for older people getting out in the middle of this does change the equation some. who does that benefit and who does it hurt? we don't know. >> ainsley: what's your sense walking around the hotel and in the town and talking to people. are they saying they'll stay at home? steve was saying when you are on the gravel roads, an older person, you are talking about putting your life on the line. >> scary. >> there are people telling us today they're undecided and they plan to show up. people here take this very seriously. you talked to pizza ranch earlier. they've met the candidates and had lunch and coffee with them in a way that doesn't happen anywhere else in the country. for them to say it's important to me i still don't know who to pick but show up tonight we're
