>> the people here feel like essentially it's a job interview. these people come in, the candidates come in and everybody wants to talk to them and they do because they are right there. >> a lot of people want them in their living room and they do. i liked your closing argument stuff inviting the candidates. we invited the former president. so he had the opportunity to make that little elevator pitch and it was a good thing. >> give us your elevator pitch at 10:00 tonight. >> i think if it tracks the way it's going there could be early calls. martha and i will be there at 10:00 all the prime time folks. before that bill is at the billboard digging in. it should be good. >> ainsley: i'll take naps today and we'll be watching. >> brave the weather and go out and save america. this is really about saving our country. >> you get to set the direction for the country.
6:01 am
>> when we get this done can you go out there and bring it home? >> tomorrow night we caucus and win the primary and we win the general. >> bill: the stage is set. first votes in the 2024 election will be tallied hours from now. tonight in iowa voters get their first verdict on the republican presidential field when they go to caucus. we've waited a long time for this one, right? it's finally here. w welcome to a frigid iowa. i'm bill hemmer. great to kick it off with you. all right. let's go. >> dana: i'm dana perino and this is "america's newsroom." it's cold outside, warm inside. the iowans are saying what are you complaining about? we'll be fine. if they're not worried maybe we shouldn't be worried for voter turnout. the coldest in history, frigid weather and a wild card that could maybe have a major impact on turnout. the candidates will make their

final pitches today across the state to deliver last-minute bids to win over voters. all pockets of the hawkeye state could hold potential pickup opportunities. >> bill: will voters brave the cold to make their voices heard? i will bet they do. a lot to talk about. karl rove, trey gowdy, byron york sit down in a moment. rich edson is doing the reporting live in des moines and rich, let's begin with you. good morning. >> all the major candidates say it is their supporters that will get to go out tonight to brave the cold and the wind and the roads that haven't been plowed and show up to caucus sites and support them. candidates spanned out across the state campaigning across iowa up until caucus time at 7:00 p.m. this evening. former president donald trump canceled a couple of in-person rallies this weekend but he was back at it yesterday, set a pretty high bar. >> last time we did tremendously
6:03 am
in iowa. i think this time we have a great ground game. >> this is the type of state where the ground game has mattered getting volunteers and staff to persuade supporters to show up to a caucus site. desantis has invested heavily visited all 99 counties and has the endorsement of key evangelical leaders and desantis is touting that ground operation. >> going and doing how many tens of thousands have we done? all the door knocks where people are seeing. they'll tell you we're the only operation where they are hearing from people at the door. not hearing from donald trump's people, not hearing from them. >> former u.n. ambassador nikki haley has been investing in iowa and seen a bump in recent polling. >> we are going to make you proud. that's my number one goal. we are going to make you proud.
6:04 am
we're already moving up in the polls. everybody else is moving down. >> governor reynold says the plows are out and roads getting better. there are 1600 plus caucus sites across the state. in american legion posts, gyms, schools. 99 counties in iowa. 28 of them have consolidated all of their caucus sites to one super location. in those counties caucus players only have one place they have to get to. >> bill: the gang is all here now. karl rove, trey gowdy, byron york. like killer's row. the four bros and the ladies. trey, start at the 35,000 level to asset what's at stake. >> does former president trump give above 50%. in haley comes second how does
6:05 am
she beat desantis. i will listen to her speech to hear if it's a vice presidential speech or coming after you speech. why does ron stay in? if you are waiting people to catch a cold or conviction that's not a compelling reason to stay in a race to wait for somebody to get sick or go to prison. what's your reason to stay in if you are third and ron desantis? >> dana: iowa can surprise. you know that from history. could it happen tonight? >> yes, since the margin between second and third is pretty close. think about it. 187,000 people turn out to vote like there were in 2016, that means a different change of 6,000 or 7,000 people has a big impact. >> bill: byron, i remember you walking down the sidewalk chasing john kerry 20 years ago. i believe it was you and you come back year after year and
6:06 am
caucus after caucus. what are you seeing now? >> they never did anything for me at the kerry white house. terrible. i think you can talk a lot about second and third but you shouldn't lose the big picture, which is there is one candidate who appears to be headed for a prohibitive victory. the reason trump wants 50 plus one so he can say to all the other republicans. look, take all the anti-trump republicans, put them together. let's end this right here. on the flip side the reason they want him under 50% is to say look for people voted for somebody other than trump that voted for trump. we need to have a big primary season. so really, if trump gets over 50, i think it will be hard for anybody to argue that he is just not going to go ahead and win. >> dana: listen to some of the candidates. call for number one what they think is going to happen. >> i'm the only one running beaten the democrats and left time and time again. we need to win again as republicans. that's how you turn this country
6:07 am
around. >> every other candidate is dancing to the tune of the biggest doaners. my buyingest donor is me and what it will take to shut down the deep state. >> a chance to reset and set the tone going forward so our kids and grandkids have a life to be proud of. >> dana: some people say they are still undecided. tonight will be determinative. a lot of members of congress here in iowa and many of them have endorsed president trump. how much does that affect voters back home when their congressman is here? >> less than 0. i know we're experiencing negative numbers right now. i don't know whether you believe the negative numbers or not. i don't think endorsements other than sununu moved the needle. donald trump's endorsement moves the needle. i don't know how many people can name their congress person back home? they're undecided about whether to go out and vote. i cannot imagine anyone is
6:08 am
undecided who they are going to vote for. >> bill: to byron's point, cal. put up call for number three. the history in iowa can change things. ted cruz 20 before the caucus, after new hampshire 28%. rick santorum at 3% before iowa and came out of new hampshire two weeks later at 30%. >> the best example is 1984 and democratic caucus in iowa. walter mondale will be the nominee of the democratic party. the last poll has him at 49. tied for second are john glenn and jesse jackson. four is rueben askew and fifth and sixth are two u.s. senator, allen cranston and gary hart of colorado. mondale nails his number on election night. gary hart at 17 and for the next eight days all we're talking about is gary hart.
6:09 am
who is this second place finisher who upsets mondale in new hampshire and the contest goes on until june 5th, the nomination for the democratic party is settled june 5th when hart wins california, south dakota and new mexico. part of the 27 states he takes. mondale wins west virginia and new jersey and clinches the nomination. it started when a guy jumped up from 3% in iowa. >> dana: one of the story lines here, of course, is joe biden, the current president. brutal abc poll yesterday. his approval at 33%. nikki haley has been making the argument if you look at polling in a general election, if she is against biden she is the one that wins. republicans aren't always persuaded by electability. how much is the idea of joe biden becoming reelected on the minds of the voters here?
6:10 am
>> first of all haley has been citing a "wall street journal" poll five weeks ago that showed her beating biden by 17%. it was an outlier. a lot of polls show that biden actually could defeat her. the other night when you had a debate between desantis and haley just the two of them together, they are both 30 points behind president trump. caucuses are coming up in a few days. they have to do something and they spend the whole time beating up on each other and that does kind of turn people off. karl was talking about this history. what we have here is something that hasn't happened in anyone's living memory, a former president running for his old job again after being out of office. it just happened once in 1888. >> dana: you don't remember that. >> i do not remember that. >> 1892.
6:11 am
>> bill: quickly lightning round. one key tonight you are watching, trey. >> margin between second and third. >> 50% for trump. >> by ron. >> evangelicals. ted cruz won them. trump is hugely ahead but we'll see how much ahead. >> bill: welcome back any time. >> dana: we'll see you all day. all right. thank you, everybody. fox news will be live in iowa all day. join martha maccallum and bret baier as the results come in starting tonight at 10:00 p.m. eastern and we will be live tomorrow morning to break it all down as the focus shifts to new hampshire and then we race to the northeast. i haven't checked the forecast there yet. >> bill: it has to be warmer. a long day today but captivating throughout the state of iowa. great reporters here and three awesome analysts with us today. thank you again. republican candidates meanwhile making a last-minute push ahead throughout the day the caucuses
